Goal-mouth scrambles

You know how idiots like to say the penalty shot is “the most exciting play in hockey”? Well, they’re idiots. Because really, what’s more exciting than those wild scrambles in front of the net? The times where it seems like every guy on the ice is in the blue paint, and no one knows where the puck is, and you’re in the stands or in front of your TV just screaming uncontrollably and incoherently, whichever side of the puck your team is on? Whether the replay eventually shows that the puck was never in any danger of creeping over the goal line, or whether somehow in the crazy melee someone managed to punch it past the goalie, those few frenzied seconds of anarchic madness are, in our opinion, the most thrilling, heart-pounding, get-you-up-out-of-your-seat part of any hockey game.

Scoring in the Final Minute of a Game with an Extra Attacker

Part of the joy of watching live sports is that you never know what could happen. If you watch long enough you’ll end up seeing just about anything happen, including that fantastic-when-your-team-does-it goal in the final 60 seconds. When your team is down by a goal and it looks like they’re down and out, there’s always a little voice saying, “But there’s still time!” Fortunately for Devils fans, we’ve got Brian Gionta, Sergei Brylin and Zach Parise, all unexpected masters of the final-minute goal scoring. When the clock is winding down, and the scoreboard is tipped to the opponent’s favor, we can expect to see tiny whirlwinds zipping around the net in a last ditch effort to square things up. And those tiny whirlwinds come through often enough that we’ll never stop believing in them. As long as the Devils have Gio, Sarge and Zach (whose propensity for scoring that useless goal that gets the team within one in the final seconds has earned the coining here at IPB of the term “Parise Special”) that last goal never seems out of reach.

While she really needs no introduction around here, we should mention that you can get even more of a taste of the world as she sees it at her LiveJournal. Since you all know the drill should you want to see your own reason you love hockey in this space (email us at interchangeablepartsblog [at] gmail [dot] com), lets just get right to it, and give it up for Mags!

The reason the Nijmegen Saints and Bloemendaal’s first womens’ team (but mostly Mags) love hockey:

Bandy, field hockey, ice hockey, shinty, street hockey, polo, hurling.

All incarnations of the game. We love hockey, because of the seemingly endless variety within a set of principles and rules.

Hockey is variety.
