Devils @ Penguins, 11/12/07

Today’s the day Scott Stevens is inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and we feel kind of bad for not having put up a post about him. The fact is, though, that we don’t really feel qualified to write about him. His HOF credentials had already been established by the time we came to the Devils, so we have no real perspective on what he was before he became the face and heart of our beloved organization. And as for the eight seasons we were lucky enough to see him play, what can we even say? He is, as far as we are concerned, simply the greatest player at anything ever of all time. Seriously. Some people might want to boil the essence of his career down to a few highlight-reel hits or points-and-PIM stats, and for those people we’ll mention this: Scott Stevens taught us, as fans, about the single most important objective in sports: winning. And he played in more wins than any other player in the history of the NHL. But that’s just a stat. The fact is that Scott Stevens was there when we came to the Devils, the unflappable, relentless, stalwart, awesome, steady, inspiring, fierce cornerstone of the franchise, and we don’t have the words to even begin to describe his greatness. He meant everything to the team that means everything to us. (For a more eloquent look at Scotty, hop on over to In Lou We Trust.)

So in the spirit of Scotty’s accomplishments, we’re trying something new this week at IPB: we’re going to be happy for a change. Or at least happier. We’re aiming to find no fewer than three positive things in every game we watch this week, starting with tonight’s Penguins-Devils matchup:

FIRST PERIOD

PRO: Steve Cangialosi segues from his intro to Doc’s call with a chirpy “It’s hockeytime!” It’s so sweet and sincere. Henceforth, every evening should start with a chipper “It’s hockeytime!” It’s like a Muppet version of “It’s a beautiful day for hockey!”

RANDOM ASIDE: After Zach’s shot bounces over the net and fails to ricochet in off Sabourin, Pookie says, “More plays like that and I’ll start to believe the Devils aren’t getting any puck luck.” Schnookie responds, “You make your own luck.” Pookie: “Right. Puck luck is the residue of puck design.”

CON: In a discussion of whether the boys were getting any more offensive pressure, Schnookie points out they’ve not gotten any shots.

PRO: Immediately after — nay, as she is speaking — about the Devils not getting any shots, Schnookie is proven very wrong when Travis rips a shot past Sabourin. (On a night less Pollyanna-ish, we might describe that shot as being “trickled in” rather than “ripped in”. But tonight is not that night.)

PRO: Does it need to be said? A goal by Zach? On the power play? That’s a happy, happy thing!

CON: Something Chico says encourages us to begin singing songs from “OKlahoma!” quite exuberantly. We’re pretty sure our neighbors do not appreciate this.

PRO: We haven’t laughed so heartily during a Devils game in… well, a while. “I say, Boxworthy! My goal total is as high as a elephant’s eye!”

PRO: Steve interviews Travis going to intermission. When Steve asks him why he scores so much against the Pens in Pittsburgh, Travis shows off how professional he is when he says, “There’s something about this rink” instead of “There’s something about this goaltending.”

PRO: It’s 2-0 Devils after one!

SECOND PERIOD

CON: The period kicks off with Sid proving he is a far better offensive player than Pauile is a defensive player. 2-1 Devils.

PRO: After eating 1/3 of a block of Hudson Valley Camembert cheese each, our Diet Cokes still miraculously taste okay!

CON: The Devils don’t score on about 400 consecutive minutes of power play.

PRO: The Pens didn’t score shorthanded on same 400 minutes.

PRO: Other than that goal, we didn’t notice Sid once in that period. (Yes, we know how lame that sounds, but we’re being positive.)

CON: Pookie has that song about inchworms measuring marigolds stuck in her head.

PRO: She has the words, “Acorns, Acorns/Menacing the neutral zone…” stuck in her head to the tune of that inchworm song.

PRO: Gio cracks us up by all but calling the second period “perfectly adequate”. (He actually says it was “average”. How much would we give to hear him call it “perfectly cromulent”? Quite a bit.)

SECOND INTERMISSION

PRO: During intermission, we’re treated to an interview between Steve and Scotty Stevens. When asked what was the most intense game he played in, Scotty replies, “Game 7 against Anaheim.” This leads to lots of heart-warming shots of our boys hoisting the Cup (and we’re somewhere in the crowd in those shots, back in the last row of the upper deck).

CON: Steve’s follow-up comment is a chuckling, “Well, of course you’d pick that Game 7. The one with a happy ending.” Scotty merely returns the chuckle. Ha fucking ha. Stupid Devils.

THIRD PERIOD

CON: The Devils start this period acting like they think a 2-1 lead is insurmountable. After five minutes play the Devils have been out of their zone for maybe 15 seconds.

PRO: (About five minutes into the period) Patty was thinking all shot when he got the chance.

CON: Patty’s shot isn’t what it used to be and goes about 8 feet wide.

CON: What did the Devils think was going to happen if they kept taking penalties? Thanks, Acorns.

PRO: We’re big enough to admit that Malkin is an incredible hockey player. And he’s playing at a level about a million miles above every one of his teammates tonight.

PRO: Rod Pelley has been a beast tonight. Pookie: “I’ve taken a real shine to him.”

PRO: When things get down to the nitty-gritty, with under five minutes in a tie game, the Devils shut the Pens down. They spend the first three quarters of the period pinned in their own zone, but with the game on the line, they show off that they can be a dominating team if they put their minds to it.

PRO: Patrik. Fucking. Elias. (When was the last time we’ve been happy about anything he’s done?)

PRO: Brian. Fucking. Gionta. (Ditto.)

PRO: This team could not look cuter celebrating a win than they did tonight. So much snuggly helmet-nuzzling!

CON: It wasn’t 60 minutes of good Devils hockey.

PRO: It was 45 minutes of good Devils hockey, which is 45 minutes more than they played on the Island on Saturday.

We’re aiming to find no fewer than three positive things in every game we watch this week, starting with tonight’s Penguins-Devils matchup.

This game should ease you in, considering it’s your primary and secondary teams playing. Every negative for one will (hopefully) be a positive for the other.

  2. on November 12, 2007 at 7:35 pm DS

Oh wow, I’m so glad we get the chance to give Marty’s 500th to Kevin Weekes.

  3. on November 12, 2007 at 7:36 pm DS

whoo-hoo! Malkin and Staal back together!

  4. on November 12, 2007 at 7:38 pm Pensgirl

Here’s one positive, Ookies: Jeff Jimerson. Anthems don’t get any better than that.

  5. on November 12, 2007 at 7:39 pm DS

Another one? Kerry Fraser not officiating!

  6. on November 12, 2007 at 7:45 pm Mags

I just woke up. Have we lost yet?

  7. on November 12, 2007 at 7:48 pm Mags

    ACORNS!

  8. on November 12, 2007 at 7:49 pm DS

Johnny Oduya’s black? And from Sweden? I did not know this.
You learn something new every hockey game.

  9. on November 12, 2007 at 7:53 pm Pookie

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Oduya’s black? And from Sweden? I did not know this.

Yup! His dad’s from Africa. Schnookie thinks Nigeria. But she could be wrong.

  10. on November 12, 2007 at 7:53 pm CapsChick

    ZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACH! :P

  11. on November 12, 2007 at 7:55 pm CapsChick

I actually have no idea who scored but I looked up and Zach was smiling so I felt the need to type that excitedly. Clearly it was my presence at IPB manor that was bringing him down…

  12. on November 12, 2007 at 7:55 pm Pensgirl

Dude. MacInnis is the first person from Nova Scotia to be inducted into the Hall. Considering hockey was invented there, that’s total bullshit. Though, considering that little fact is not generally acknowledged, it’s not really surprising either.

Sorry to rain on the “happy” post with negativity.

  13. on November 12, 2007 at 7:58 pm DS

Maaaaaaaaaaaan. If crowd noise could score goals…

  14. on November 12, 2007 at 7:58 pm Pookie

Sorry to rain on the “happy” post with negativity.

The enforced happy zone does not extend to anyone but us. Be as negative as you’d like!

For example, you may now complain you’re down by 2! :)

  15. on November 12, 2007 at 7:59 pm Mags

    :O

  16. on November 12, 2007 at 8:00 pm DS

Hey, we’re better at deficits than we are with leads. :P

Having said this I’m of course now sure we’re screwed.

  17. on November 12, 2007 at 8:01 pm CapsChick

Okay, I KNOW that one was Zach - YAY!

  18. on November 12, 2007 at 8:01 pm Mags

Knitted!Boxworthy posits Zach couldn’t stand being tied with Travis at 4 goals :P

  19. on November 12, 2007 at 8:03 pm MOPG

Bibbs just said the “Devils power play is off the schneid.” Congratulations ‘Ookies!

  20. on November 12, 2007 at 8:05 pm Pensgirl

DS, I was about to say that very thing. Being down 2-0 is actually better than being up 2-0…as ever it was. That sort of thing seems to come with the logo…very Pens of Yore.

It’s not like I came in expecting them to even try to win, so just seeing a bunch of black shirts in the slot earlier brightened my mood.

Besides, having watched both The Bourne Identity AND a recap of the Pens-Hawks 92 SCF today, I’ve had a good dose of happy.

If we win it’ll be icing. If we lose…par for the course.

  21. on November 12, 2007 at 8:08 pm Pookie

Oooh! The Bourne Identity There is nothing on Earth happier than that! Except The Bourne Supremacy. You know what I just realized? I still haven’t seen the 3rd one. And I just disconnected my DVD player. Huh. This makes me sad. Come on, Zach! I need cheering up! Score more! Score more!

  22. on November 12, 2007 at 8:08 pm DS

Still wish we could learn to score off rebounds a la Fleury….(/evil)

    *whistles*

  23. on November 12, 2007 at 8:14 pm Mags

DS, you shouldn’t zing your own team :P Poor MAF (did you know that means “crazy” in Dutch? Well now you do)

  24. on November 12, 2007 at 8:14 pm Pookie

Sid and Andy Greene — FIGHT! FIGHT! Aw, come on, Sid. We’d LOVE to see that fight. In fact, in discussing how much we’d pay for that, we’ve decided we’d buy a $65 seat for a discount ($35? $30?) to see that fight.

  25. on November 12, 2007 at 8:16 pm Pensgirl

Oooh! The Bourne Identity There is nothing on Earth happier than that! Except The Bourne Supremacy. You know what I just realized? I still haven’t seen the 3rd one. And I just disconnected my DVD player. Huh. This makes me sad.

I saw Ultimatum the day it came out in the theater. And then again two days later. Best. Series. EVER.

Jason Bourne is my imaginary husband, dontcha know! :P

In the whole “be happy” vein, tonight’s “Subway Sandwich of the Game” was waaaaaaaaay better than Saturdays. It’s the small victories.

  26. on November 12, 2007 at 8:18 pm DS

Mags, I thought “crazy” and “goalie” were redundant. :P

  27. on November 12, 2007 at 8:25 pm DS

So does anyone else read the paper edition of the Hockey News? I was at the library today and their 60th anniversary issue had the top 10 players for each team. There were a bunch of people listed twice but I kept trying to see if anyone made three teams. I still don’t know. :P Thoughts? (and Ookies, I’m sorry, I didn’t memorize the Devils’ list, but I know Marty was top two. :P)

  28. on November 12, 2007 at 8:25 pm Mr Frisby

David who? There is this this Kevin guy who seems to be wanting somebody to buy his jersey (you know how I have a weakness for goalies).

  29. on November 12, 2007 at 8:25 pm Mags

DS, oh I know, but it amuses me when it’s reinforced :D

  30. on November 12, 2007 at 8:25 pm Pookie

Jason Bourne is my imaginary husband, dontcha know!

Hands off, bitch! He’s mine! :P (Schnookie here, by the way…)

  31. on November 12, 2007 at 8:27 pm alix

You’ll both have to fight me for Jason Bourne :p

  32. on November 12, 2007 at 8:28 pm Pookie

There is this this Kevin guy who seems to be wanting somebody to buy his jersey (you know how I have a weakness for goalies).

Everything Weekesie has said and done in his tenure with the Devils just screams True Devil. I love him so much. He might leave after one year, and maybe my standards have been lowered after cranky-selfish-pants Clemmer, but I just love Weekesie more with everything I hear from him. (Schnookie still here, by the way…)

  33. on November 12, 2007 at 8:29 pm Pookie

You’ll both have to fight me for Jason Bourne

Have you ever watched Supremacy, Indentity, Supremacy back-to-back-to-back? Because we have. Twice, I think.

  34. on November 12, 2007 at 8:29 pm Pensgirl

You’ll both have to fight me for Jason Bourne :p

Well you should know that I’m just as determined and just as able to kick ass with a hand towel as he is.

    BRING IT!!

  35. on November 12, 2007 at 8:31 pm Pookie

Well you should know that I’m just as determined and just as able to kick ass with a hand towel as he is.

Hmm… We’re both a bit more Quaker about our approach to hand-to-hand combat…

  36. on November 12, 2007 at 8:33 pm Mr Frisby

Everything Weekesie has said and done in his tenure with the Devils just screams True Devil. I love him so much. He might leave after one year,…

I thought he signed for two years. And after looking it up, <a href=”http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=212831&hubname=nhl”he did.

  37. on November 12, 2007 at 8:33 pm alix

And I can barely fight a baby haha.

  38. on November 12, 2007 at 8:33 pm Pookie

Happiness! That XM radio commercial never, ever fails to bring a grin to my face! This positives thing isn’t so hard!

  39. on November 12, 2007 at 8:34 pm Mr Frisby

    oops

    …he did.

  40. on November 12, 2007 at 8:34 pm alix

    Did Zach and Acorns score?

  41. on November 12, 2007 at 8:35 pm DS

Ah, that goal horn sounds so goood.

  42. on November 12, 2007 at 8:35 pm Mags

    Damn Crosby.

  43. on November 12, 2007 at 8:37 pm Pensgirl

    Damn Crosby.

Or Praise Him On High! :P

  44. on November 12, 2007 at 8:39 pm Pookie

Yes, alix, Zach and Acorns totally scored. As Pookie said during Travis’s interview, he’s probably thinking now, “I got my acorn. I don’t need to bother trying for another one for at least 20 games.” (Oh, and Schnookie here, in case you were wondering…)

  45. on November 12, 2007 at 8:41 pm Mags

In an attempt to look on the bright side, I’ve decided that at least Weekes isn’t getting a shutout. I never thought I’d be happy to say a goalie didn’t keep the zero.

  46. on November 12, 2007 at 8:41 pm Pookie

Was Laraque just grabbing at Clarkson’s Clarkie-doo?

  47. on November 12, 2007 at 8:42 pm Pookie

In an attempt to look on the bright side, I’ve decided that at least Weekes isn’t getting a shutout.

Explain? What would be wrong about the Devils getting a shutout tonight?

  48. on November 12, 2007 at 8:44 pm Pensgirl

Travis shows off how professional he is when he says, “There’s something about this rink” instead of “There’s something about this goaltending.”

Actually, what you really mean is “there’s something about this defense.” I have been a Pens fan for 17 years, and not once - not when our blueline featured Ulf Samuelsson and Larry Murphy, not even when our biggest offensive talent was Alexei Morozov - were we known for having a good defense.

Playing in Pittsburgh = You’re On Your Own, Goalie!

  49. on November 12, 2007 at 8:46 pm alix

“Yes, alix, Zach and Acorns totally scored.”

Yay! I was this close to benching him, so glad I decided not too.

  50. on November 12, 2007 at 8:46 pm Pookie

Schnookie here: I’m supposed to be thinking positive here, but would it have killed the Devils to look shot on this PP?

  51. on November 12, 2007 at 8:47 pm DS

Randy Carlyle, last Penguin to win the Norris!….and we traded him for offense. :P

  52. on November 12, 2007 at 8:47 pm Pensgirl

You know what I hate? Assholes at Pens games wearing Steeler gear. YOUR STUPID STEELER SHIRT DOES NOT COUNT AS PENGUIN SUPPORT, FUCKER!

  53. on November 12, 2007 at 8:48 pm Mags

Pookie, I don’t know. I’m grasping at straws.

  54. on November 12, 2007 at 8:50 pm Pensgirl

OK, they’re inducting Ronnie now, and they lead off by showing close-up clips of him in games along with a voiceover of superlatives…when the narrator says “class,” the clip they show is of Ronnie basically snorting as he skates around during a stoppage. Thaaaat’s nice.

    What moron put that together?

  55. on November 12, 2007 at 8:54 pm Pensgirl

In an attempt to look on the bright side, I’ve decided that at least Weekes isn’t getting a shutout.

The Pens’ fantastic radio team went into this game talking about the fact that Monday is basically Weekes’ weakest day to play. One example they gave of this is that it’s his only day without a shutout.

I don’t remember hearing them do that type of stat before, so I’m wondering if they went with “days of the week” just because of his name. :P

  56. on November 12, 2007 at 8:57 pm Pookie

So what would Gary Roberts do? Take a goaltender interference penalty. Nice one, Gary! (That said, I smell shortie.)

  57. on November 12, 2007 at 9:00 pm Pensgirl

So what would Gary Roberts do?

    He shouldn’t even be playing.

I’m VERY happy right now, watching Ronnie give his speech.

  58. on November 12, 2007 at 9:14 pm Mags

    He shouldn’t even be playing.

I dunno, I don’t mind him. I somehow miss Colby though.

  59. on November 12, 2007 at 9:14 pm DS

    ….Army’s scratched again tonight?

  60. on November 12, 2007 at 9:16 pm Mags

    Yup.

  61. on November 12, 2007 at 9:19 pm Pensgirl

    I dunno, I don’t mind him.

When we got him last year, he was amazing. But this “respiratory illness,” or something, has made him all but disappear this year. He hasn’t done anything except take penalties. So, if he’s sick (which they say he is), and he’s not contributing (which I say he’s not), then he should not be playing. Let him rest and get better, and then we can get the guy back that my brother dubbed “the Dread Penguin Roberts.”

    ….Army’s scratched again tonight?

Yes. He really didn’t respond to being scratched by playing with the fire I thought he’d have, but it really should have been someone else’s turn tonight (see above).

  62. on November 12, 2007 at 9:22 pm DS

Shows you how much I notice.

So Sid was #4 on the Pens’ list.
“Didn’t take long to become the world’s best player.”
(The annoying thing is I can’t remember who #3 was!)

…I think Ovie was #10 for the Caps. What this means, I don’t know. *hides from CC*

  63. on November 12, 2007 at 9:24 pm Icing

Am I allowed to talk about highlights of the HOF stuff? Stevens?

  64. on November 12, 2007 at 9:24 pm MrFrisby

I dunno, I don’t mind him. I somehow miss Colby though.

That dirty SOB? Wtf, Mags, are you just going for shock value tonight?

  65. on November 12, 2007 at 9:25 pm Pookie

…I think Ovie was #10 for the Caps. What this means, I don’t know. *hides from CC*

Schnookie and I are currently trying, and failing, to name 10 Caps who would be considered good (let alone better than Ovie). *hides behind DS so CC can’t see us*

  66. on November 12, 2007 at 9:26 pm Pookie

Am I allowed to talk about highlights of the HOF stuff? Stevens?

    NO SPOILERS, ICING!

Just kidding. We’re not tivoing it or anything. Please do tell all! (If Scotty’s speech is at all like his number-retirement one was, there won’t be a dry eye in the house. The moment where he tried to thank his wife and just stopped being able to speak was SO ADORABLE.)

  67. on November 12, 2007 at 9:27 pm Pensgirl

…I think Ovie was #10 for the Caps. What this means, I don’t know

Bondra, Iafrate, Hunter…..OK, who else? I can think of one more but I refuse to utter his evil, hateful name.

  68. on November 12, 2007 at 9:28 pm DS

Bondra was #1 and Langway was #2. The Caps did used to make the playoffs, y’know. :P

  69. on November 12, 2007 at 9:28 pm Mags

That dirty SOB? Wtf, Mags, are you just going for shock value tonight?

No! I think he’s sorta funny! That and he’s my sister’s favourite player, so I prefer it when he’s out on the ice because then she won’t screech my ear off about him not playing.

  70. on November 12, 2007 at 9:30 pm Pookie

I can’t believe we forgot Hunter! I got one of those weird mental blocks where all I could think of was Steve Emminger. That… wasn’t really helping.

  71. on November 12, 2007 at 9:33 pm MrFrisby

Jesus H Crhist on a bicycle, put it on net! Elias, drop and give me twenty.

  72. on November 12, 2007 at 9:34 pm Pensgirl

I can’t believe we forgot Hunter!

You haven’t been around as long as I have, dears. :)

I’m assuming Jagr’s not on the Caps’ list given that his years there were his quietest, but maybe I’m wrong.

    Who else? Beaupre? Olie?

  73. on November 12, 2007 at 9:34 pm DS

In case you’re wondering, PG, the only list Double J made was the Pens’. (SHOCK, I know!)(I’m pretty sure he was #2.)

  74. on November 12, 2007 at 9:37 pm Pookie

Elias, drop and give me twenty.

We’ve decided the Devils figured out immediately in that practice that if they just didn’t bother trying to get it on net, they’d never miss, and thus never have to do push-ups. Larry probably looked over at Sutter and was like, “I told you so.”

You haven’t been around as long as I have, dears. :)

No, but Hunter was most definitely playing when we started watching so we have no excuse.

  75. on November 12, 2007 at 9:40 pm Pensgirl

I’m pretty sure he was #2.

I was figuring you could more or less run down the Cup teams. Mario, Jaro, Ronnie, Tommy, Kevin, Murphy, Ulf, Coffey…then maybe a couple of guys from before…Kehoe and Syl Apps?

  76. on November 12, 2007 at 9:42 pm Mags

    *sigh*

  77. on November 12, 2007 at 9:46 pm DS

Artie was #9, you’ll be happy to know; I’m not sure about Kehoe, but Carlyle was on there, and Pronovost. No Apps! (and I think his dad was, like, #1 for Toronto.)

  78. on November 12, 2007 at 9:46 pm Pensgirl

    *sigh*

    Or, rather: YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!

Except, tomorrow is my first day of my new job, and I have to get up at 6am when I am used to getting up at 8am, and therefore this MUST end in regulation.

  79. on November 12, 2007 at 9:47 pm Pensgirl

Artie was #9, you’ll be happy to know

    He’s #1 to me!!!!

I’m not sure about Kehoe, but Carlyle was on there, and Pronovost.

Oh, shame on me for six weeks. How did I forget about Carlyle and Pronovost?! Granted they were before my time, but STILL.

  80. on November 12, 2007 at 9:49 pm Mags

    Or, rather: YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!

    Lies.

As for getting up early, I reckon I got you beat :P I’m not sure I’m going to sleep today. It’s nearly 4am and I have to be up again by 7.

  81. on November 12, 2007 at 9:49 pm DS

HA!! Weekes used to wear #80 for Jerry Rice (he’s not Canadian, is he.) Lou took it off all his stuff!

  82. on November 12, 2007 at 9:49 pm MrFrisby

    YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. on November 12, 2007 at 9:49 pm Pensgirl

    See, Ookies? NO DEFENSE.

  84. on November 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm Pookie

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  85. on November 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm DS

I didn’t wanna say “careful what you wish for”, PG…..

  86. on November 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm MrFrisby

I just scared the cat with that.

  87. on November 12, 2007 at 9:50 pm Mags

I was just saying to Vinny how much the Devils were making me cry, and then Elias goes out and scores. Contrary bastard.

  88. on November 12, 2007 at 9:51 pm Katebits

Of all of the things I have learned in this, my first season of hockey, the fact that I am hot for Patrick Elias might be the most startling. That weirdo is hot.

  89. on November 12, 2007 at 9:51 pm Pensgirl

I didn’t wanna say “careful what you wish for”, PG…..

I knew exactly what I was saying. One way or another, I need that extra time to shower.

  90. on November 12, 2007 at 9:51 pm Pookie

    See, Ookies? NO DEFENSE.

Yes, that was the D. But Travis goal? All Sabourin.

  91. on November 12, 2007 at 9:52 pm DS

Mags, do you wake up early just to watch/listen to the games?

  92. on November 12, 2007 at 9:52 pm Pookie

I just scared the cat with that.

We sent cats scurrying in all directions!

    That weirdo is hot.

Yes. Yes he is. And that goal “celebration” was really adorable. But don’t tell him we said that.

  93. on November 12, 2007 at 9:53 pm MrFrisby

Patty scored but yet he still throws his head back and rolls his eyes.

  94. on November 12, 2007 at 9:53 pm Pensgirl

Yes, that was the D. But Travis goal? All Sabourin.

I was watching the Hall ceremony for NJ’s other goals. I am perfectly happy to point first to bad defense on ALL goals against, even if the goalie decides to stand behind the net for the whole game.

  95. on November 12, 2007 at 9:54 pm Mags

DS, depends on my schedule. Sometimes I go to sleep early in the afternoon and wake up for it, other times I stay awake and go to sleep afterwards.

  96. on November 12, 2007 at 9:55 pm Meg

Of all of the things I have learned in this, my first season of hockey, the fact that I am hot for Patrick Elias might be the most startling. That weirdo is hot.

Sometimes I think he is, and then there are other times I think he’s not. Hmm…I’m very indecisive about Elias.

  97. on November 12, 2007 at 9:56 pm Mags

I am hot for Patrick Elias

That’s going to be a fun search term.

  98. on November 12, 2007 at 9:57 pm Pookie

…even if the goalie decides to stand behind the net for the whole game.

That’s pretty much what happened on Travis’ goal. Except Sabourin picked up the puck, skated behind the net, then reached over the top of the net and tossed the puck in. :P

Patty scored but yet he still throws his head back and rolls his eyes.

It’s been so long since he’s done that after missing a shot that I was beginning to wonder if he still cared enough to do the eye roll. It was good to see he still has it.

  99. on November 12, 2007 at 9:57 pm DS

wait, wait, wait….which player on the Devils is 5′7″?? :D

  100. on November 12, 2007 at 9:58 pm Pensgirl

Sometimes I think he is, and then there are other times I think he’s not.

    Uhhhh…you guys can have him.

The Pens’ theme song should be “Give It Away.”

  101. on November 12, 2007 at 9:59 pm DS

why the hell doesn’t MT use his timeout??

  102. on November 12, 2007 at 10:00 pm DS

    ^earlier, I mean.

  103. on November 12, 2007 at 10:01 pm Pookie

wait, wait, wait….which player on the Devils is 5′7″?? :D

Zubrus is like, “It’s not me!” Then he looks at all his teammates and they’re like, “5′7″? No, I’m not quite that tall.”

Good thing I expected a loss tonight, eh?

  108. on November 12, 2007 at 10:02 pm Pookie

    Was Zubie just licking Weekesie?

  109. on November 12, 2007 at 10:02 pm DS

Lou thinks masochistic midgets play the best NHL hockey, eh? :D

  112. on November 12, 2007 at 10:05 pm MrFrisby

Ok, now be honest, Johnny Oduya had a fairly good game tonight, didn’t he?

Oh, fyi, my Langenbrunner sweater arived last week.

  113. on November 12, 2007 at 10:05 pm alix

stupid NHL.com is slow to update their box scores. Is it 3-1 Devils?

  114. on November 12, 2007 at 10:07 pm Mags

G’night Pensgirl! Good luck at your new job!

  115. on November 12, 2007 at 10:07 pm Meg

    3-2

  116. on November 12, 2007 at 10:09 pm alix

Thanks Meg. Wooooohooooo! Hmm…apparantly Sid and ex Canuck Sabby don’t win out over the Devils. Interesting.

  117. on November 12, 2007 at 10:09 pm Pookie

    ‘Night, Pensgirl!

Oh, fyi, my Langenbrunner sweater arived last week.

Just in time for the real Langer!

my Langenbrunner sweater arived last week.

    Yay!

I’m going to catch some sleep as well. Y’all have a good night :)

    Yay Devils :D

  119. on November 12, 2007 at 10:10 pm Pookie

Oh, and Frisby, you’re right — Oduya was not AT ALL a disaster tonight. I almost don’t recognize these guys.

  120. on November 12, 2007 at 10:10 pm Pookie

    ‘Night Mags!

  121. on November 12, 2007 at 10:11 pm Schnookie

Have I ever mentioned how adorable Patty’s accent is? I think he’s required to wear this hideous sweatshirt to keep us from being totally overwhelmed by the hottitude of his accent. Oh, and don’t tell him I said that.

  122. on November 12, 2007 at 10:11 pm Meg

Yikes, Cole stretchered off the ice.

  123. on November 12, 2007 at 10:13 pm alix

    Night Mags!

  124. on November 12, 2007 at 10:13 pm Schnookie

Hilarious Patty quote of the night, when asked by Steve what the fans should do on Wednesday when Gomer makes his return to Jersey: “I hope they’ll boo him a little.” Then he adds, “Of course, it’s not about him.” HEE!

  125. on November 12, 2007 at 10:14 pm Schnookie

Yikes, Cole stretchered off the ice.

    What happened?

  126. on November 12, 2007 at 10:14 pm Meg

    That is a funny quote.

  127. on November 12, 2007 at 10:16 pm Meg

Yikes, Cole stretchered off the ice.

    What happened?

Well I didn’t see it, but apparently he went head first into Vokoun’s pads.

  128. on November 12, 2007 at 10:18 pm MrFrisby

    G’night, Mags.

I think I may have to put an Oduya highlight reel from tonight’s game together to show that Oduya is not as bad as he gets a rap for.

Congrats to Weekes and Elias (proud members of the Kentucky Cruisers, a non-IPBLeague team).

  129. on November 12, 2007 at 10:18 pm Meg

Wait, they’re saying on HFBoards that it looks like he hit his head on the ice, then went into Vokoun’s bads. Either way, never a good thing. Hopefully they were just being extra careful because of his history.

  130. on November 12, 2007 at 10:25 pm Icing

Yeah, I read that Cole incident on the scroll on the NHL network and I just felt ill.

  131. on November 12, 2007 at 10:27 pm Meg

Apparently he can move all his extremeties and was conscious, so fingers crossed.

  132. on November 12, 2007 at 10:29 pm Icing

    Yay!

And PS - the Stevens speech sounds like what you described ookies.

  133. on November 12, 2007 at 10:39 pm Schnookie

That’s good to hear about Cole. (We’re watching that game now on tivo delay… in HD. Hope it’s not too gruesome.)

Icing, I’m glad to hear Scotty was his usual cute self. (Yeah, I just called Scott Stevens “cute”.)

  134. on November 12, 2007 at 10:58 pm Patty (in Dallas)

I missed Pensgirl, but I wanted to say that I agree about the anthem singer. Very nice.

  135. on November 12, 2007 at 11:00 pm Patty (in Dallas)

I’m watching the game on TiVo, so now that I know how it ends, maybe I’ll just fast-forward to the goals. I thought Sidney’s goal was highly underrated.

The way he skated around front and then just faced the goalie… clever!

  136. on November 12, 2007 at 11:02 pm Schnookie

The way he skated around front and then just faced the goalie… clever!

That kind of play is very much enhanced by the, uh, passive physical response by Paulie as the defender. (I say “passive” because it’s the kindest word I can think of.)

  137. on November 12, 2007 at 11:06 pm Patty (in Dallas)

Still, it’s a move that would fool a goalie, because it’s just so odd. The goalie would assume he’s going to try to reach around past him.

  138. on November 12, 2007 at 11:08 pm Patty (in Dallas)

Mind if I ask y’all a DirecTV HD question? For some reason all my local channels in HD are blank (searching for signal). All my other channels, both HD and otherwise are working. Ever heard of such a thing?

  139. on November 12, 2007 at 11:12 pm Schnookie

We have never gotten our local HD channels on DirecTV. The party line from a year ago was that they were going to be on a different satellite that wasn’t available yet. It could very well be that they’ve since launched that satellite (if you actually believe that in the first place) and that you’re either not getting it or haven’t had that package added to your programming (I think you’re supposed to have to pay extra for it). Or they might not be available? I don’t know. Our maple tree blocks us from almost all the HD programming, so it’s neither here nor there for us. Good luck with that!

  140. on November 12, 2007 at 11:16 pm Patty (in Dallas)

Yeah, I got my new box and a new giant satellite and I’ve had those channels for a while. They just stopped working.

They didn’t know what it was, either. I was hoping it was going to be a bug. I hope it’s not my box because I have a ton of stuff on there that I haven’t watched yet.

    Oh, well.

All the new HD channels have just been in the last few months. And you have to get a new dish. They did launch some new satellites. It’s cool because there are a bunch of extra CI channels just for HD games.

  141. on November 12, 2007 at 11:23 pm alix

I think we’ve been over this already, but is the NHL channel worth ordering?

  142. on November 12, 2007 at 11:37 pm Schnookie

It’s cool because there are a bunch of extra CI channels just for HD games.

Sigh. We’re probably not going to get them, thanks to our stupid tree. We’ll have to see about that…

alix, I’ve enjoyed the NHL Channel, but I’m not sure how much it would cost you. I haven’t watched a ton on it yet, though.

  143. on November 12, 2007 at 11:43 pm alix

Apparantly my Grandma’s new hobby is ordering TV channels, so I might just highlight that channel in that little guidebook thing :p

  144. on November 13, 2007 at 12:04 am Genna

PRO: This team could not look cuter celebrating a win than they did tonight. So much snuggly helmet-nuzzling!

Wasn’t that the cutest!? I love how Zubie, Patty, etc. were so affectionate towards Weekesie. I also love how Patty seemed to embrace everyone after the game ending with Larry embracing him with a smile on his face.

I think our PP needs a slogan, like “The Devils’ Power Play, making your PK look better this season” or something like that.

  145. on November 13, 2007 at 1:12 am Patty (in Dallas)

I was just watching the highlights from the Carolina game. Have y’all watched it yet, Ookies?

  146. on November 13, 2007 at 1:12 am Cat

We’re aiming to find no fewer than three positive things in every game we watch this week

I try to do that with every game I watch, but it’s becoming harder and harder to do. Best of luck to you!

  147. on November 13, 2007 at 1:13 am Patty (in Dallas)

I am guessing they went to bed…

Voukoun had some wild stuff happen, eh?

  148. on November 13, 2007 at 6:51 am Tricia

So Travis is officially going to be referred on as Acorns? Any-who, he is a Penguins killer isn’t he? Makes me love him even more. Also, as I am limited to highlight reels, I noticed an adorable moment of a helmet-less Zach after he got his goal. Adorable. The Zubrus hit from Ruutu was pretty entertaining too I have to say.

I know I’m a day late but those are my semi “puck-bunny” observations. ^_^

  149. on November 13, 2007 at 9:45 am Schnookie

I think our PP needs a slogan, like “The Devils’ Power Play, making your PK look better this season” or something like that.

No opposing team’s fans would ever complain about having to go watch their guys play the Devils if we started playing up the angle that we’ll make anyone look good! That’s a great idea!

We were remarking during the celebrations at the end of the game that for all that Patty might be the world’s biggest flake, the guys clearly all really like him, since they were all, to a man, wrapping him up in huge, happy hugs and generally just looking delighted for him. That hug with Larry, though, could not have been more adorable. Larry and his “nurturing assistant coach” dynamic just crack me up.

Tricia, it is never too late for “puckbunny” observations! It goes without saying that stately IPB Manor was all abuzz when Zach lost his helmet on that goal. Our favorite part about the Ruutu-on-Zubrus hit was the way Oduya and Paulie looked so pissy pushing Zubrus back off the bench. It was like they were all cranky he’d crashed into their little clique-y conversation or something: “Get out of here, loser! Only underachieving offensive defensemen are allowed in our club!” (And alix called Travis “Acorns” at the start of the game; it made me laugh too hard not to keep running with it!)

  150. on November 13, 2007 at 9:48 am Schnookie

I try to do that with every game I watch, but it’s becoming harder and harder to do. Best of luck to you!

Oh, and thanks, Cat! It seemed so easy last night, but our next stop with the Devils is a Rangers game… I think it’s going to test the very outer limits of my positivity.

  151. on November 13, 2007 at 9:49 am Pam/Shorty

Good morning all. I laughed when Zubrus was dumped over the boards. I was thinking, I hope he stays there.

I watched the post game interview with Patty, and as soon as Cango (steve cangalosi) was like “I’ll be joined by Chico with some analysis…” I was like, thanks, but no thanks, this is where I will turn this shit off…

  152. on November 13, 2007 at 9:54 am Schnookie

I was like, thanks, but no thanks, this is where I will turn this shit off…

Aw… poor Chico! He gets no respect! :D (We don’t listen to him either. But it’s always a good idea to wait out the entire postgame because they sometimes include multiple player soundbites from the dressing room. Why, just on Saturday we got to see how Zach is incapable of putting on his own shirt without Boxworthy’s assistance! Anyway, I know Chico was talking on our TV after the game last night, but I have no idea what he was saying…)

  153. on November 13, 2007 at 10:09 am Morgan

    Hey All-

Just a quick howdy and a quick I may not be posting much this week. The Broadway stagehands are on strike, 27 shows are shut down, and I work for a company that sells tickets to Broadway shows!

    Not good times.

    So Quick Shifts:

The Devils will be fine this year. We’ll struggle until we get some help on the blueline, but we have cap space, bodies to trade, and Colin White can still come back.

Johnny Oduya is a great 5th defenseman on the road, 4th at home, and he gets introuble when Sutter puts him on the first pair.

I can’t hate Patty Elias. He is just too earnest. I am going to treat him as I did when we had Joey Newendyck (somebody correct that spelling for me).

Gotta go, piles of paperwork will be washing my way soon.

  154. on November 13, 2007 at 10:30 am Schnookie

I can’t hate Patty Elias. He is just too earnest.

I’m beginning to come to that same conclusion. And after he scored last night it was pretty evident that, while it might not look like he’s trying on the ice, they guy ties himself into mental knots when he’s not playing well. Poor Patty. (That said, I have to at least pay lip service to never letting up on him, or he’ll never score.)

I never understood why Sutter put Oduya on the top pair in the first place. I agree that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him as a 4th/5th d-man — I daresay he’s perfectly adequate in that role. But when he’s skating Paulie Martin minutes against the top guys? Not so much.

Good luck with all that work, Morgan!

  155. on November 13, 2007 at 10:39 am Earl Sleek

Joey Newendyck (somebody correct that spelling for me).

Nieuwendyk. Give me a gold star.

  156. on November 13, 2007 at 10:49 am Gabby

Hey, did anybody else think the shot of Marty B. on the bench with a sulking pout on his face, just as Chico was burbling on about how Marty loves the chance to work on skills on a day off, totally hilarious? Or did I just imagine this moment?

  157. on November 13, 2007 at 10:57 am Elly

Well ladies, there’s a positive for ya: you’re no longer sleeping in the basement of the Atlantic. Oh, what’s this? The Penguins sleeping bag? Oh! And their old beer fridge from 2002-2006. Aww, they even kept up the stock of ramen to make on the ol’ cook stove. How nice.

Anyone want to join me in a nice round of ‘Flyers suck’?

-Elly, who is not bitter at all. Not…at…all. Nope.

  158. on November 13, 2007 at 10:58 am Schnookie

Gabby, how did I miss that moment? I don’t think you imagined it, because it sounds exactly like something that would have happened. I love how pouty Marty always looks when he’s not playing! And again — poor, oblivious Chico. Always sounding so kind, yet vapid. :D

Earl, your gold star is in the mail.

  159. on November 13, 2007 at 11:00 am Schnookie

It was only a one-point “leap-frogging”, so don’t get too comfortable down there, Elly!

I’m always up for a hearty round of “Flyers suck”, though.

  160. on November 13, 2007 at 11:00 am Amy

I really like the Pro / Con format, though it was a little difficult to follow at first, since I hadn’t seen the game.

And their old beer fridge from 2002-2006.

I hope they at least get new beer. Skunky beer is the worst.

  161. on November 13, 2007 at 11:01 am Patty (in Dallas)

    Nieuwendyk is my favorite.

  162. on November 13, 2007 at 11:04 am Schnookie

I really like the Pro / Con format, though it was a little difficult to follow at first, since I hadn’t seen the game.

We really only went with this because I was feeling lazy and wasn’t up to writing a game diary. I have to scarf my dinner before gametime when we do diaries, and we were having a pretty swanky cheese platter last night, so it was nice to be able to take my meal at a leisurely pace. So yeah, in short — we phoned it in last night. (Why we didn’t just go with a post-game recap, I don’t know. I always feel like we’re coming off as goofuses when we do that. This post today! So fraught with anxiety and self-doubt!)

  163. on November 13, 2007 at 11:14 am Patty (in Dallas)

This post today! So fraught with anxiety and self-doubt!)

Oh my non-hockey blog, I am doing NaBloPoMo, and let me tell you, it is making me want to kill myself. I think that we should be kind to ourselves about our blogs because we are just doing this for fun……except for the Ookies who are doing this to obtain world domination.

I guess I wouldn’t kick world domination out of bed either, now that I think about it.

  165. on November 13, 2007 at 11:21 am Elly

Yes…and really, the Atlantic is fairly close, and I think a pretty hard division…but man, just Wednesday we were battling with the Flyers for the top and now….how far we have fallen! Man, the Flyers suck.

I hope they at least get new beer. Skunky beer is the worst.

I’m sure King Shero can spring for a new case of Molsen.

Yup! IPB’s secret motto is “World Domination, one mailed-in blog post at a time.” Oh, crap. Now it’s not a secret.

but man, just Wednesday we were battling with the Flyers for the top and now….how far we have fallen!

    It’s still so early! Seriousl
