As always seems to be the case, the Devils are among the league leaders in team defense and goals-against average this season. And because this is always the case, we’re sure there are a lot of casual observers out there who are thinking it’s just more of the same in New Jersey. But in a column by Rich Chere in Sunday’s Star-Ledger, we came across a quote that we feel should put to rest any misconceptions people might be having about the caliber of players the Devils are skating on their blue line this season. While praising Colin White for playing so well after returning from a catastrophic eye injury, Mike Mottau said:
“It’s hard enough to play with two eyes.”
That’s right. This is the guy we call Mike Motherfucking Mottau. Applemotherfuckingsauce. Do you think Scott Stevens ever said anything like that? Scott Niedermayer? Ken Daneyko? Okay, Dano probably did, but that’s not the point. The point is that this is not your grandfather’s Devils blue line.

Willie O’Ree would agree wholeheartedly, having played with only one good eye.
So would Doug Dorsey (aka – D.B. Sweeney) from 1992′s The Cutting Edge. He was a quitter though so feel free to ignore him.
And Bryan Berard, who appears to be doing good things for the Isles lately.
So would Doug Dorsey (aka – D.B. Sweeney) from 1992’s The Cutting Edge.
If only there’d been some place down in Mexico where they could have shot shark piss up his nose and put him in traction for six months… He woulda had an excellent pro career.
(Cutting Edge — Best. Movie. EVER.)
(Cutting Edge — Best. Movie. EVER.)
Concurred!
It’s been a little while since I’ve seen it, but didn’t Dorsey’s team refuse to let him play?
Isn’t that what drove him into the spangly, spandex-clad world of figure skating?

I think he was rejected by pretty much every single team in the league.

Your 23rd letter came today, Dougie. Detroit Red Wings! Sorry about the eye, go piss up a rope! Hey, you gonna fight me? You gonna fight the world? Huh? Well put me on the list, pal!
Oh, man, I love that movie. Caitlin, I suggest you brush up on it over All Star Weekend. It’s truly a masterpiece. And it has a quote for every hockey occassion. Schnookie’s favorite being, “This is the Olympics, Kate. Not Junior Pairs ’82.” The Devils quake in their skates whenever she brings out the old Junior Pairs ’82. I’m fond of “A button!… Where was I? I was babysitting!” CapsChick, if she’s around at all, is like the queen of Cutting Edge.
I wish I could spend all morning waxing poetic about that movie (aren’t you sorry you brought it up, Matt?) but I have a class to teach. But now I have the Cutting Edge music stuck in my head so there’s no way it’s a bad class!
I think he was rejected by pretty much every single team in the league.
And then he had to take the humiliating job at his brother’s bar in Middle of Nowhere, USA, right?
Oh, man, I love that movie. Caitlin, I suggest you brush up on it over All Star Weekend. It’s truly a masterpiece. And it has a quote for every hockey occassion.
What’s sad is I own this movie.
I should really watch it…on a night there is no hockey on.
Have fun at your class, Pookie!
What’s sad is I own this movie.
There is NOTHING sad about that! We own it in DVD and VHS format. And why do we still have our VHS tape of it? Why, because we taped the autograph we got from D.B. Sweeney at the ’97 A-S weekend onto the box! (Yes, I barged into a conversation D.B. Sweeney was having with, I think, Barry Melrose and someone else from ESPN to get his autograph and totally blow off the hockey dudes, and yes, D.B. seemed unsure of how to spell his own name, and yes, D.B. went to the same college Pookie did.)
I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of Doug Dorsey every time someone gets an eye injury from playing hockey. Of course, most eye injuries in hockey don’t happen the way his did, as he stood there, off balance and watching his own shot, until the entire German National Olympic Team lined up and took turns driving his head into the dashers. So maybe his type of eye injury was more career ending than, say, Berard’s? :P
And then he had to take the humiliating job at his brother’s bar in Middle of Nowhere, USA, right?
Right. Why do I want to say Middle of Nowhere USA was somewhere in Minnesota?
Why do I want to say Middle of Nowhere USA was somewhere in Minnesota?
Because it was! Doug wasn’t known in college as “The Minnesota Machine” for nothing, you know. :D
There is NOTHING sad about that! We own it in DVD and VHS format.
Oh, I didn’t mean it like that! I meant it’s sad that I’m stretching to remember things about the Cutting Edge when I own it. I’m a movie freak, so after a while the movies all start to bleed together…
Why, because we taped the autograph we got from D.B. Sweeney at the ‘97 A-S weekend onto the box!
Oh my goodness, that is too cook for words! How awesome!
I would be lying if I said I didn’t think of Doug Dorsey every time someone gets an eye injury from playing hockey.
When my mother watches hockey with me, any time she sees a guy do the whole, “Hey! I’m skating and here’s me randomly falling!” kind of thing, she giggles and says “Toepick!”
So I discovered the most horrible thing when I arrived at work this morning — I have to attend a meeting today! What the hell? I need AT LEAST two weeks’ warning to gird myself for meetings. Sure, it’s just a half-hour teleconference, but still. This is a travesty. I’m very troubled by this.
Sure, it’s just a half-hour teleconference, but still. This is a travesty. I’m very troubled by this.
Oh, no! That’s no good. (I personally dislike meetings so I’m glad I don’t have to take them anymore. :D)
Whew! The meeting is now behind me, so aside from my dentist appointment tomorrow morning, it should be smooth sailing the rest of this week!
This is a travesty. I’m very troubled by this.
I’m afraid for you, Schnookie.
Whew! I guess I was scared for nothing!
“It’s hard enough to play with two eyes.”
Maybe y’all just aren’t used to players with a sense of humor. :P
Hello, IPB! I’m back from teaching my class. For the first time I handed out class evaluations. I was stunned to discover, on a scale of 1-5 (one being the worst) that I was only ranking a 4 on “teacher presented material in a clear way”. STUNNED, I tells ya! I wonder if it’s because I was like, “You want to know what that tab does in Excel? Hm. I have no idea. Next question!”
The meeting is now behind me, so aside from my dentist appointment tomorrow morning, it should be smooth sailing the rest of this week!
Can I have your schedule? I had two meetings this morning. I have two more tomorrow and three on Thursday.
Its been a busy hockey morning so far. TSN’s reporting that Sidbot’s injury is worse than first thought, and he’ll be out 6-8 weeks, instead of the original 4. They’re also reporting that the Laffs have finally pulled the trigger, and are announcing their new GM today.
Maybe y’all just aren’t used to players with a sense of humor.
Heh. Seriously. :D
Honestly, I’m so delighted that Mottau said that. What a hoot! I just adore that the guy who’s been our most consistent defenseman from day one is all, “Yeesh! Playing hockey is hard!” I’m tellin’ you guys — this Devils blueline is the most ridonkulous ragtag group evah. Oduya aside, I love them to pieces. :P

Oh, no. Us Dallas fans are also waiting with bated breath for the results of Sergei Zubov’s MRI. …Okay, so that might be just me waiting with bated breath, but nonetheless.
It might be one of those depressing hockey days, I feel.
I wonder who the new GM is for the Leafs?
“You want to know what that tab does in Excel? Hm. I have no idea. Next question!”
That was the approach I took to my meeting. I’m the point of contact for these people doing resource tracking for my department, and apparently we’re a very complicated group to be trying to figure out what work we’re doing and how. So the people in the meeting kept asking me if I could help them sort out the various inner workings of the people I support, and I’m like, “Nope. Sorry, I don’t know anything about the science we do. They’re all just the people I order office supplies for. Aren’t you happy you invited me to this meeting now?”
Amy, I saw that about Sid and JFJ. I was not surprised by the former, and won’t believe the latter until I see it. :P
Amy, that sounds like a rough week! I hope the Sabres consider that and start winning a few for you.
Poor Sid. Did you see how skeevy he looked sitting with Mario last night? I think Mario clubbed him and fractured his leg because he was afraid Sid was getting too independent.
Amy, I saw that about Sid and JFJ. I was not surprised by the former, and won’t believe the latter until I see it. :P
I wish they’d cut the poor guy loose. I can’t believe I’m in agreement with Brian Burke, but for God’s sakes, if you’re going to get rid of him, get rid of him, don’t let him just be ineffective and leave him hanging.
Hockey is breaking my heart y’all.
Did you see how skeevy he looked sitting with Mario last night?
Sid totally looked like the Stella episode where the guys are posing as “successful businessmen” to try to rent back the apartment they were evicted from. He was totally chortling uproariously at all of Mario’s banal team-owner jokes and then sighing, “I haven’t laughed that hard since my last business transaction!”
Poor Sid. Did you see how skeevy he looked sitting with Mario last night? I think Mario clubbed him and fractured his leg because he was afraid Sid was getting too independent.
Eww, I missed it during the game but Pensblog had a cap up of it. His hair looked like he styled it with grease from a fryer that he collected from his local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Hockey is breaking my heart y’all.
I’m sorry, alix! What did those evil Canucks do to you now?!
His hair looked like he styled it with grease from a fryer that he collected from his local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Oh give him some credit, Caitlin. He doesn’t use KFC grease. Sid gets the grease from the steak-fry deep-fryer at the most expensive steak house or country club in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Eww, I missed it during the game but Pensblog had a cap up of it. His hair looked like he styled it with grease from a fryer that he collected from his local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He’s totally rocking Soupy’s “overstyled with way too much product” look. And that shot makes his face look all kinds of puffy.
Sid gets the grease from the steak-fry deep-fryer at the most expensive steak house or country club in the greater Pittsburgh area.
Well, when we’re talking cooking grease, I suppose you’re right: only the high-end sludge will do for Sir Sidney.
Is it weird that I like Ovie just a little bit more for having retina-burning neon skate laces? It kinda makes me hope one day, we’ll get a close-up shot where you can totally see that Ovie’s rockin’ the Strawberry Shortcake laces. Or perhaps, Care Bears.
I hope the Sabres consider that and start winning a few for you.
Well, I think they only have one game before the All-Star break so that’s only one more loss this week. That’s a plus, right?
His hair looked like he styled it with grease from a fryer that he collected from his local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Him and Louie must be hanging out.
“I’m sorry, alix! What did those evil Canucks do to you now?!”
Thanks, Caitlin. They keep losing! But the thing is, they played really, really well, so I can’t even be mad at them. 40 shots on goal, and still a loss. We’re now out of a playoff spot though. I’m stunned.
I guess on the bright side, Matty had an awesome game.
Well, I think they only have one game before the All-Star break so that’s only one more loss this week. That’s a plus, right?
If we’re speaking of the Stars game, Amy, I can tell you that the Stars make no promises on winning. I mean, they’re potentially trending towards winning that game, but they can’t give you a firm guarantee.
I’m sorry, Amy. (Buffalo fans, I really am sorry – if that was happening to my team, I’d be passed out drunk. Right now.)
Is it weird that I like Ovie just a little bit more for having retina-burning neon skate laces?
Caitlin, I love his neon skate laces. I think they’re adorable.
That’s a plus, right?
Definitely.
We’re now out of a playoff spot though. I’m stunned.
But you guys were, like, in first place not too long ago! What gives?
We’re now out of a playoff spot though. I’m stunned.
What? For reals?! I mean, normally, alix, I would dance and sing that we don’t have to have a repeat of last year’s first-round Stars exit…but, that’s so terrible.
I’m sorry. Hey, I have some Nazzy & Pyatt hockey cards if you want them! (That may not cheer you up though, considering…)
Caitlin, I love his neon skate laces. I think they’re adorable.
The man is like the most adorable crazy Russian giant freakshow ever.
Caitlin, if the Stars are planning on showing up on Thursday I’d say that gives them a definite leg up on the Sabres.
If we’re speaking of the Stars game, Amy, I can tell you that the Stars make no promises on winning. I mean, they’re potentially trending towards winning that game, but they can’t give you a firm guarantee.
Caitlin, the Sabres will hand the Stars the game. They will foist it onto you whether you want it or not. They will be most insistent. And if all else fails, Crunchy will let in undeflected, unscreened point shots all night.
On the downside, if the Stars do lose to the Sabres they should be thoroughly embarrassed.
alix, I checked the standings this morning aren’t you guys 8th? that’s still a playoff spot!
Caitlin, if the Stars are planning on showing up on Thursday I’d say that gives them a definite leg up on the Sabres.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Aww, Heather, that makes me feel bad for y’all. No one should have to feel like that about any team.
That being said, it makes me feel horrible for the Sabres, and poor Yo-Yo, who I have really come to like, when I hear Ralph & Razor talk about the upcoming Sabres game like, “Look at how many they’ve lost, Stars fans! Doesn’t that make you feel better about OUR start to ’08! Har har! They have to come play here, too!”
“But you guys were, like, in first place not too long ago! What gives?”
Dude, I know. It was so beautiful there for awhile. Louie hasn’t been his magical self lately, and we just can’t seem to catch a break goal wise.
Caitlin, the Sabres will hand the Stars the game. They will foist it onto you whether you want it or not. They will be most insistent. And if all else fails, Crunchy will let in undeflected, unscreened point shots all night.
Comforting, truly! You never know, though.
On the downside, if the Stars do lose to the Sabres they should be thoroughly embarrassed.
This is what I’m afraid of. That and someone showing me that RBK Edge commercial with Crunchy in it again, for fear I may die laughing.
“I’m sorry. Hey, I have some Nazzy & Pyatt hockey cards if you want them! (That may not cheer you up though, considering…)”
Thanks, Caitlin. Nazzy and Pie Hat would cheer me up, actually.
“alix, I checked the standings this morning aren’t you guys 8th? that’s still a playoff spot!”
Huh. I thought we were one point out of 8th. That’s a slight improvement. Thanks, Sherry.
I’m tellin’ you guys — this Devils blueline is the most ridonkulous ragtag group evah.
Bluelines are inherently adorable, if you ask me. I mean, look at us! We have 3 rookies on ours right now. And two of the “veterans” are Robidas and Trevor Daley! I picture Norstrom taking them all to Six Flags on their day off.
That being said, it makes me feel horrible for the Sabres, and poor Yo-Yo
Don’t feel sorry for the Sabres. They’re totally doing it to themselves most nights. Yo-Yo is on the short list of guys you can feel sorry for though so you’re fine there. And us. You can definitely feel sorry for us. We have to watch these guys.
alix, I watched a lot of that game last night, and I thought it was incredibly exciting! I totally forgot what hockey between two good teams looked like.
Bluelines are inherently adorable, if you ask me. I mean, look at us! We have 3 rookies on ours right now. And two of the “veterans” are Robidas and Trevor Daley! I picture Norstrom taking them all to Six Flags on their day off.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Did you see the article the DMN wrote on Robi? The only word I can think of to describe it is “sweet”. Aww, Robi.
Thanks, Caitlin. Nazzy and Pie Hat would cheer me up, actually.
Whee! I’ll e-mail you in a few.
alix, it’s true. Kate and I were emailing and each other and two or three times she said, “Whoa, this hockey looks SO GOOD! I can’t believe it!”
I picture Norstrom taking them all to Six Flags on their day off.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I imagine most of our blueline shows up for every road trip expecting to be taking a 12-hour bus ride before being reminded that, quality of teammates notwithstanding, they are actually in the NHL now. :P
Bluelines are inherently adorable, if you ask me.
I totally agree, with the notable exception of the Ducks’ blue line, which is as adorable as Darth Vader.
Don’t feel sorry for the Sabres. They’re totally doing it to themselves most nights. Yo-Yo is on the short list of guys you can feel sorry for though so you’re fine there. And us. You can definitely feel sorry for us. We have to watch these guys.
Yeah, I feel sorry for y’all. Poor Sabres fans. I’m sorry. And I read something the other day by Bucky, and I’m sorry for him too. I mean, what is going on in Buffalo? Is there a need to have that much suck going on at once?
I don’t know if any of you guys caught this already or care what Mike Brophy has to say, but he thinks the Sabres are handling the Campbell situation correctly: http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/12843-THNcom-Blog-Sabres-shouldnt-overpay-Campbell.html
I totally agree, with the notable exception of the Ducks’ blue line, which is as adorable as Darth Vader.
Darth Vader can be adorable in a…lumpy sort of way.
I totally agree, with the notable exception of the Ducks’ blue line, which is as adorable as Darth Vader.
That’s how despicable they are. They actually overcome inherent adorableness that is handed to them outright. :D
I don’t know if any of you guys caught this already or care what Mike Brophy has to say, but he thinks the Sabres are handling the Campbell situation correctly:
I read that this morning and was all, “Right on!” until I realized it was Mike Brophy, and then I narrowed my eyes meanly at my computer screen and hissed, “Asshole.” I really love Mike Brophy. He’s so great.
I’m feeling bad about hoping the Stars beat the Sabres, too. I still have to, but I feel bad about it.
So why are the Buffalo Sabres playing games where his contract extension is concerned?
Because they’re smart, that’s why.
I think I’m in love with Mike Brophy. Thanks for the link, Sherry!
I really love Mike Brophy. He’s so great.
I can tell :P
Well, with Crosby out about 6-8 weeks, does this mean Zach will have another crack at making the All-Star Team? Or am I just getting his hopes up again?
I did read that article, and it did make me feel better, Sherry.
I’m feeling bad about hoping the Stars beat the Sabres, too. I still have to, but I feel bad about it.
Patty, I didn’t feel bad about the Devils beating the Sabres. I may have paid lip service to it, but I didn’t really feel bad. :P
Well, with Crosby out about 6-8 weeks, does this mean Zach will have another crack at making the All-Star Team? Or am I just getting his hopes up again?
I think Zach’s going to have to work his way deeper down the roster to get a chance, what with Malkin still out the outside looking in, but I have faith that he and Boxworthy will find a way to get this done.
The Leaves should hire Doug Armstrong. I saw an article in a Toronto paper saying the same thing. It was really galling the guy that Army pretty much had the Stars in the running his whole time with them, yet was fired. But the Leaves have taken the opposite tack.
Sherry, I think Malkin was already put in as Crosby’s replacement, wasn’t he? Quite frankly, I can’t even believe we’re still having the game without Sid!
Patty, don’t feel bad! The Stars are your team, the Sabres are mine. That’s the way it works.
Seriously, Patty. Don’t feel bad. They deserve to be in last place. They’ve deserved every loss. I’m sure they’ll deserve this one too.
Patty, I didn’t feel bad about the Devils beating the Sabres. I may have paid lip service to it, but I didn’t really feel bad. :P
She even came to my blog to crow about it! :P
The Leaves should hire Doug Armstrong.
But that wouldn’t help me at all because the Leaves don’t have any heart-and-soul players I want for the Devils in exchange for a few of our washed-up losers. :P
She even came to my blog to crow about it!
I did! What can I say? Mike Brophy has turned me into a super-bitch.
I’m feeling bad about hoping the Stars beat the Sabres, too. I still have to, but I feel bad about it.
Patty, I didn’t feel bad about the Devils beating the Sabres. I may have paid lip service to it, but I didn’t really feel bad. :P
We wouldn’t expect either of you to feel bad. It’s not like the Sabres are innocent victims here.
Quite frankly, I can’t even believe we’re still having the game without Sid!
It’s shocking, I know. Hockey can continue on without Sidney Crosby. I, for one, am utterly amazed.
I don’t know if any of you guys caught this already or care what Mike Brophy has to say, but he thinks the Sabres are handling the Campbell situation correctly:
I completely agree with Brophy’s comments, but it’s going to do nothing more than fan the flames of the idiots who think Soupy needs to be re-signed yesterday.
I completely agree with Brophy’s comments, but it’s going to do nothing more than fan the flames of the idiots who think Soupy needs to be re-signed yesterday.
Yeah, this is true. This is definitely one of those things where you’re on one side or the other and no one’s changing your mind. And it’s kind of lonely on my side, present company aside. I was totally stoked when I heard there were people from Chicago at the game yesterday watching Soupy.
Ruh-roh. Lindy’s passively-aggressively calling out Crunchy. From the summary of WGR’s interview with Lindy this morning…
“We also know that the key person for us, most nights, will be the guy between the pipes. He’ll be the guy that will ride us out of this. I think those key saves at key times, a lot of times lead to opportunities the other way.”
But that wouldn’t help me at all because the Leaves don’t have any heart-and-soul players I want for the Devils in exchange for a few of our washed-up losers. :P
That was early! He’s learned how to pick up the heart-and-soul guys and get rid of the losers. (Well, what I assume will be a loser, since Florida picked him in the 7th round.)
Dude. this team is a total freaking disaster. I seriously think Lindy has lost his mind.
Ruh-roh. Lindy’s passively-aggressively calling out Crunchy. From the summary of WGR’s interview with Lindy this morning…
Haven’t listened yet, but I wouldn’t describe that as unjustified. I’m going to lunch, but I’ll have to listen when I get back.
“alix, I watched a lot of that game last night, and I thought it was incredibly exciting! I totally forgot what hockey between two good teams looked like.
alix, it’s true. Kate and I were emailing and each other and two or three times she said, “Whoa, this hockey looks SO GOOD! I can’t believe it!”
Thanks Katebits and Heather! It was a really good game and my boys played really well. I think that is what is breaking my heart, because they’re trying really hard.
Dammit! Don’t call Crunchy out, right before the game with the Stars! Wait until the A-S break!
It was a really good game and my boys played really well. I think that is what is breaking my heart, because they’re trying really hard.
Alix, earlier in their long slump the Sabres were having games like that. Now? Not so much. I’m sure the Canucks will do the normal and proper thing and right the boat soon.
Unless it throws off his game, then call out away.
Unless it throws off his game, then call out away.
In the past it’s been pretty effective, actually. Who knows now, though, they might be past that point.
Haven’t listened yet, but I wouldn’t describe that as unjustified. I’m going to lunch, but I’ll have to listen when I get back.
Me neither. No one on the team is playing great at any kind of consistent level but Ryan has been mostly not good this season. If the team was getting above average – or on some nights even average – goaltending, things would be better. If he wants to be The Man and he wants the big fat contract, he needs to play much better. T-Bo was terrible yesterday but I’ve been watching Ryan let in an awful lot of shots just like recently.
It was a really good game and my boys played really well. I think that is what is breaking my heart, because they’re trying really hard.
It’s hard to know whether to be optimistic. If they’re trying hard and lose, then what can you do? But if they’re trying hard and playing well, they’ll probably pull out of it.
They just need a goalie they can score on.
Really Lindy should’ve been calling out all of them a long time ago.
Wasn’t Crunchy’s GAA average less than two during the streak?
Really Lindy should’ve been calling out all of them a long time ago.
Yeeeeeesssss….
*walks away before getting into trouble*
In the past it’s been pretty effective, actually. Who knows now, though, they might be past that point.
It has. I’m hoping Lindy thinks that by calling out Miller, Miller’s going to light a fire under the other guy’s asses, using the “I’m not the only one out here screwing up, so I shoudn’t take all the heat” phenomenon.
Really Lindy should’ve been calling out all of them a long time ago.
I agree. Looking at that quote, it didn’t seem that bad to me. It’s really more “constructive criticism” than anything else, and frankly, Crunchy deserves it. As does everyone else on the team. And compared to the public singling-out Sutter’s done this season to various Devils, I would really hardly even consider that comment from Lindy a “calling out” at all.
Wasn’t Crunchy’s GAA average less than two during the streak?
I think so, during parts of it atleast. But he was still letting in shots that he should’ve been stopping at times when the team needed him to be good. And he was still getting smoked in the shootouts. Numbers don’t tell the whole story. Last season his GAA was over three but he was playing much, much better hockey. IMO.
Yeeeeeesssss….
*walks away before getting into trouble*
Please. Like we don’t all know how you feel on the matter.
*walks away before getting into trouble*
Please. Like we don’t all know how you feel on the matter.
I’m sorry. What I said was completely uncalled for. I apologize. @@@
I’m so, so, so, so sorry the Sabres are in such disarray. I really am. I was so sure they’d do fine this year.
Um, is that a Cutting Edge reference I see way back there in the early stages of this conversation??
*sniffles*
*wipes eyes*
OH IPB IRREGULARS HOW I ADORE YOU.
Ahem…carry on ;)
CC, I so hoping you’d drop by and see the Cutting Edge talk! I should have known your internal Cutting Edge sensors would pick up on it.
*lederhosen knee slap*
CC! *Does the “fist over the head and outstretched arm” move*!!!!
Does it make y’all feel any better that the Rangers are tanking so elaborately?
Even the MSM is noticing that Chris Drury has made a huge mistake.
I’m sorry. What I said was completely uncalled for. I apologize. @@@
No, no, no. Apologies and cinnamon rolls are completely uncalled for. I just meant there was no reason for you to slink away from the conversation, that’s all. We all know you would’ve fired Lindy three months ago :-)
Even the MSM is noticing that Chris Drury has made a huge mistake.
I know! Someone on the Rangers broadcast was all “it’s like the Drury of old has gone missing” and then someone made a clutch joke.
Good afternoon IPB! Yay Cutting Edge!
Heh. It really DOES make me feel better that the Rangers are tanking too.
“It’s hard to know whether to be optimistic. If they’re trying hard and lose, then what can you do? But if they’re trying hard and playing well, they’ll probably pull out of it.
I think they’re trying hard and playing well. They had TONS of scoring chances yesterday. Every game in December we won, they were called out for not getting more shots on goal. Now they’re getting more shots on goal but losing, go figure.
“They just need a goalie they can score on.”
Hopefully St.Louis will play a crappy back up goalie and they’ll light him up.
You know what that means, Ookies. Ve…are….IN!
Parlez-vous Olympics!!!
This is HORSESHIT!!! You call this a sport?
We all know you would’ve fired Lindy three months ago :-)
*in a small voice* Actually, I believe I suggested at the time that he be replaced after last year’s playoff loss. I do admire Regeir’s loyalty, I really do. And it’s sad that there’s just no place in the League for that in this day and age.
You know what’s odd about it, though? The Sabres aren’t coach killing. They’re just not playing well. I’m beginning to appreciate that when the Devils were coach killing, they were doing something cooridinated as a team… and suceeding. Huh. I’ve never thought about it that way…
Hopefully St.Louis will play a crappy back up goalie and they’ll light him up.
I was about to get mad with you or dissing Legace (Waffles goalie yo) but then I read “back up” and that’s completely ok :P Hope for his failure all the way! (and now I have to go apologize to the Goalie Gods, lest they hurt me some more)
You know what that means, Ookies. Ve…are….IN!
Parlez-vous Olympics!!!
We know about leeetle problem. Good. Now let’s move on to beeeeeg problem. Vat is beeeeg problem? Smilkoff ee Brushkin. Who? Brrruuuuuskin ee Smilkoff.
*in a small voice* Actually, I believe I suggested at the time that he be replaced after last year’s playoff loss.
Oh. Well, now you can get lost and throw me some cinnamon rolls! :-)
I can’t decide if firing Lindy would make Buffalo feel like something was being done finally OR if Buffalo would go even more ape-shit crazy.
And while I’m also on the record re: Lindy, I will say again that I’d much rather ship out every player on the roster and start from scratch than fire Lindy. That’s totally doable, right?
I’m trying not to say anything, by the way, about the Rangers tanking. I worry that if I take too much delight too publicly, they’ll go out and make an Avery-type deal that launches them into the playoffs just like last year. They’ll, like, pick up Darcy Tucker or something. And then I’ll be just like last Spring, watching the playoff positioning every day, frozen with sheer terror that we’ll end up getting them in the first round and just hating absolutely everything in the universe because of how much the Rangers make me unhappy. But just between you all and me, this current swoon they’re in is… wonderful.
I’ve never thought about it that way…
I would never have thought of coach killing as a team building activity, but if you’re going to do it, might as well do it well.
We know about leeetle problem. Good. Now let’s move on to beeeeeg problem. Vat is beeeeg problem? Smilkoff ee Brushkin. Who? Brrruuuuuskin ee Smilkoff.
Legano..Illegano, ees grey area.
I know! Someone on the Rangers broadcast was all “it’s like the Drury of old has gone missing” and then someone made a clutch joke.
On “On the Fly” the other night, the new guy (seems like a new guy every night) was saying that Drury has to be looking down the bench at Jagr and wondering if he did the right thing.
I won’t tell any Hockey Gods what you said, Schnookie.
I can’t decide if firing Lindy would make Buffalo feel like something was being done finally OR if Buffalo would go even more ape-shit crazy.
Well, maybe after looking at how Washington has turned their season around thanks to the magic of a coaching change, people would see reason and see it as something being done? Oh, who am I kidding. Everyone would probably just freak out that the team could add Lindy’s name to the list of people the Sabres have lost with nothing to show for it in return. :P
On a completely unrelated and off-topic note, I just scheduled my appointment for the 30th to go in and be put on the no smoking pills! Wheee, I’m so excited!
Next step: acupuncture appointment!
I decided to go in earlier after looking at my bank account and realizing just how much I spend on the cancersticks. Depressing!
I wonder if guys like Drury or Gomez would ever stop to think that they did the wrong thing. I mean, if guys like that did, wouldn’t Holik have talked Gomez out of signing with NY?
Congrats and good luck, Caitlin! That TiVo will be yours before you know it!
Heather, I’m inclined to agree with Schnookie that if Lindy goes, present company will be the only ones saying it was a good thing. Until the Sabres turn it around and win it all. Then everyone will be saying they knew it all along and Lindy should’ve been fired last Spring.
I worry that if I take too much delight too publicly, they’ll go out and make an Avery-type deal that launches them into the playoffs just like last year. They’ll, like, pick up Darcy Tucker or something.
Wouldn’t having Tucker and Avery on the same team throw off the league’s per-team douchebag allotment?
You want to worry about something, why not worry about Ramjet the Rookie here?
Oh, I could go on for days! I’m feeling a synchronized IPB viewing of Cutting Edge, what do you think? :)
On “On the Fly” the other night, the new guy (seems like a new guy every night) was saying that Drury has to be looking down the bench at Jagr and wondering if he did the right thing.
When concerning Jagr…it’s always the wrong thing. Drury went from being the heart and soul of a Sabres team to a team that HAS no heart or soul. That would kill any player’s urge to play well. Money-grubbing jackass.
On “On the Fly” the other night, the new guy (seems like a new guy every night) was saying that Drury has to be looking down the bench at Jagr and wondering if he did the right thing.
I said that the second Chris signed that contract. Jagr and Avery, Chris? Really?
Everyone would probably just freak out that the team could add Lindy’s name to the list of people the Sabres have lost with nothing to show for it in return. :P
I know you’re kidding but I don’t think people outside of Buffalo really understand how deeply embedded Lindy is in the hearts and minds of Buffalo. Chris and Danny were players and therefore more important to the on-ice performance of the team but Lindy’s an institution at this point. People would absolutely complain that management chased him off even though Darcy adores him.
I wonder if guys like Drury or Gomez would ever stop to think that they did the wrong thing. I mean, if guys like that did, wouldn’t Holik have talked Gomez out of signing with NY?
You know, I don’t think so. All those dollars are sure compelling.
RE:Lindy. All the Sabres folks (ok, so that’s like 3 people) on the Ravelry boards are up in arms about Lindy being all fuzzy friendly, and that he should cut it out, or be fired. I’m not sure how I feel about it (because my opinion totally matters :P) but I can see how firing Lindy/moving him into another position within the organisation, would be a good thing.
Wouldn’t having Tucker and Avery on the same team throw off the league’s per-team douchebag allotment?
It would also shift the earth off it’s axis, cause the four horsemen of the apocalypse to arrive, and make small babies cry.
Until the Sabres turn it around and win it all. Then everyone will be saying they knew it all along and Lindy should’ve been fired last Spring.
I take it back. You guys really DO understand Buffalo! :-)
I’m feeling a synchronized IPB viewing of Cutting Edge, what do you think? :)
We should DEFINITELY do that (especially since I just turned my house inside out trying to find the DVD because I.must.watch.it.now)
Oh, who am I kidding. Everyone would probably just freak out that the team could add Lindy’s name to the list of people the Sabres have lost with nothing to show for it in return. :P
You say this like a joke, but it’s totally true! I was listening to the radio last night (big mistake. It won’t happen again) and the man that is PAID MONEY to talk on the radio was absolutely losing his mind, I mean yelling and going down the list of the players, and then, he started talking about Lindy Ruff, and it was all hands off “We love Lindy Ruff”. Now, I love Lindy Ruff too, but I don’t think you can have it both ways, you either have to say, “I’m willing to watch this team suck ass for a few seasons because what Lindy brings to the table is important for our community, and he’s a good enough coach that they’ll be good again some day.” (Which is a position I happen to have little respect for) OR you have to say, “This team is top to bottom bad, and Lindy is in charge of it, and we can’t fire or trade all the players, so logically, firing Lindy is the quickest route to changing the fortunes of the Sabres.” You can’t yell for AN HOUR about how hard they suck and then be all hands off about Lindy. It’s his team for goodness sakes. I don’t care WHO they lost in the offseason. This is the team Lindy is paid to coach.
I know you’re kidding but I don’t think people outside of Buffalo really understand how deeply embedded Lindy is in the hearts and minds of Buffalo.
True. Especially since Lindy has said many, many times that he is now a Buffalonian. His wife is from here, his kids were born here, and this is home.
The fan meltdown that would happen if Lindy were ever fired would make the Briere/Drury meltdown look like a walk in the park. Also, people still haven’t forgiven the team for letting Ted Nolan go, and that was 10+ years ago. (Not that Buffalo fans hold grudges or anything.)
Good luck Caitlin!
“I was about to get mad with you or dissing Legace (Waffles goalie yo) but then I read “back up” and that’s completely ok :P”
Hee. Good. I actually really like Legace, so I would have felt bad.
Sometimes Coach V and his line matching really bugs me. Does it make sense if your trailing 2-1 to have your checking line out way more often than your Swedish trio?
Mags, I do think it’s weird how Lindy has gone all soft and coddling on this team when he used to be kind of a hard ass. Basically, if it weren’t Lindy, I’d probably be down with the idea of him being fired. But it’s Lindy and I adore him so I’d rather lose Vanek.
And Heather’s right about how much we love Lindy. Every time they showed Lindy on the big screen at the Ice Bowl, the crowd went bananas. He obvious joy and love for Buffalo that day was really moving.
Basically, Buffalo is crazy and there’s no making us all happy ever. It’s not gonna happen.
Heh. Yup. Which is why we need to disengage from the Buffalo drama, Sabres fans! We can do it!
I said that the second Chris signed that contract. Jagr and Avery, Chris? Really?
That’s what’s so funny. We all had extended discussions about how much he’s going to regret it, the day he signed, yet it takes 50 games for the media to notice.
During that Rangers game the other day, Edzo went on and on about how Jagr is emotional and committed, it’s just his personality that makes him seem lazy and pouty and uninterested.
Basically, Buffalo is crazy and there’s no making us all happy ever. It’s not gonna happen.
…you’re shitting me. ;)
I wonder if guys like Drury or Gomez would ever stop to think that they did the wrong thing. I mean, if guys like that did, wouldn’t Holik have talked Gomez out of signing with NY?
I’m sure they think it. But they wouldn’t ever admit it. Even to save the next guy.
Edzo went on and on about how Jagr is emotional and committed, it’s just his personality that makes him seem lazy and pouty and uninterested.
Bwuahahahahaha. Keep telling yourself that.
I got SO MAD with NBC (and God it was Doc too and I just wanted to KICK HIM) when they were saying “European players are just less excitable. Less invested” EXCUSE ME?!
That’s what’s so funny. We all had extended discussions about how much he’s going to regret it, the day he signed, yet it takes 50 games for the media to notice.
Patty, you’re so right! We ALL said, “Drury and Jagr? I’m not sure I see that working even if they are both talented. They don’t mesh. Also, the team has no defense.” Face it, we’re geniuses.
One other thing about Lindy and then I’ll move on. I think it’s really interested that the Buffalo News, shit-stirrers through and through, haven’t even touched the idea of replacing Lindy. That’s how much we love Lindy.
(whoops, missed the comment)
Basically, if it weren’t Lindy, I’d probably be down with the idea of him being fired.
I can see that. I’d rather end up dead last than trade Coach. He’s VERY good, even if he’s a big ole grumpy puss.
Good luck quitting, Caitlin! You’ll be so glad you did.
I got SO MAD with NBC (and God it was Doc too and I just wanted to KICK HIM) when they were saying “European players are just less excitable. Less invested” EXCUSE ME?!
Oh my GOD! Mags, I missed that but that is so insane – um, does Doc even watch guys like Malkin and Ovechkin or does he just base his assumptions on Jagr? Because if we’re supposed to be basing everything on how Jagr acts…I quit.
Man, once AGAIN I miss a conversation about one of the Greatest Movies Of All Time.
One night I was sitting in the bench during a pickup hockey game with a bunch of guys I didn’t know. My team was having some issues getting the proper number of players on the ice for a faceoff (three…six…four…how many skaters do we get again?), and the guy next to me on the bench muttered under his breath, “yes, Doug can read.”
One other thing about Lindy and then I’ll move on. I think it’s really interested that the Buffalo News, shit-stirrers through and through, haven’t even touched the idea of replacing Lindy.
Little do we know, we probably just gave Bucky the idea for his next column.
I got SO MAD with NBC (and God it was Doc too and I just wanted to KICK HIM) when they were saying “European players are just less excitable. Less invested” EXCUSE ME?!
Was Doc doing a Don Cherry impersonation?
Because if we’re supposed to be basing everything on how Jagr acts…I quit.
There’s also a difference between being undemonstrative – most of our Europeans are pretty mellow – and being disinterested or uncaring. I mean, Jochen Hecht doesn’t jump around and celebrate – he barely smiles – but he plays his ass off most nights unlike oh, perhaps Jagr.
Because if we’re supposed to be basing everything on how Jagr acts…I quit.
Crap, I KNOW! If it ever gets to that point, I’m leaving. I hand in my badge as a hockey fan, heck, as a hockey player, and I’m taking up bowls.
My team was having some issues getting the proper number of players on the ice for a faceoff (three…six…four…how many skaters do we get again?), and the guy next to me on the bench muttered under his breath, “yes, Doug can read.”
:^::::::::::::::::::: Best thing.

Grrrrrrrr!!! I read this article recently about how to fix hockey and one of them was icing an all North American roster. Dude, my team would SUCK without the Europeans.
Man, once AGAIN I miss a conversation about one of the Greatest Movies Of All Time.
I say we fire it up again, just for mara! Oh man, and when you put in that “Doug can read” thing I totally heard DB Sweeney saying it in my head.
You were in…college?
I had tutors. Excellent tutors.
I read this article recently about how to fix hockey and one of them was icing an all North American roster.
I’d hate to say it, but dude, that’s just being a big fat xenophobe.
I got SO MAD with NBC (and God it was Doc too and I just wanted to KICK HIM) when they were saying “European players are just less excitable. Less invested” EXCUSE ME?!
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
Good luck quitting, Caitlin! You’ll be so glad you did.
Oh, word! I got the appointment scheduled, but unfortunately due to some other health related issues, I’ll be in there for like, two or three hours, which should be fun, but I have to run it by my bosses. Here’s hoping they approve it!
“Doug can read”
Great Expectations?
Well, it was either that or “Curious George plays hockey.”
And while I’m also on the record re: Lindy, I will say again that I’d much rather ship out every player on the roster and start from scratch than fire Lindy. That’s totally doable, right?
Whew . . . I missed a lot while I was at lunch but I just want to say that I’m pretty much in this place as well. And beyond that, I don’t think Lindy is the primary problem right now and I don’t think firing him would bring about a satisfactory solution. I don’t know what he is or isn’t saying behind the scenes, but I don’t have a lot of problems with what he’s doing in terms of lines and ice time.
Little do we know, we probably just gave Bucky the idea for his next column.
I don’t know if even Bucky is that stupid. Although it would be nice and “controversial” so I guess I wouldn’t be surprised.
Dude, my team would SUCK without the Europeans.
Um…YOUR team would suck?? Goal scorers for the Caps last night: Fleischmann (Czech), Ovechkin (Russian), Kozlov (Russian). 4 assists by Backstrom (Swede).
Uh, yeah. They would have to create something lower than 30th place for my team if you took away our non-North American players.
Mags, what was it exactly Doc said and in what context? I’ve never heard him diss Europen players like that. Was he using “excitable” as a euphemism for fighting or something?
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
Word.
I have to run it by my bosses. Here’s hoping they approve it!
If they don’t, I will come and kick them. Think that’ll work? Perhaps not so much the kicking that will be convincing as the sitting on a plane for 9 hours to get there.
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
I’m sorry, don’t all those guys play in the Western Conference? I’m not sure they count.
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
Truer words were never spoken. Or Vinny Prospal – holy shit, I fear for his teammates lives when he scores! And what about Petr Sykora? Zubrus used to have to actually brace himself for Ovechkin’s goal celebrations.
Stupid xenophobic elitist pro-Canadian Cherry-loving idiots.
Great Expectations?
Well, it was either that or “Curious George plays hockey.”
Using it as a doorstop or a coaster?
If they don’t, I will come and kick them. Think that’ll work? Perhaps not so much the kicking that will be convincing as the sitting on a plane for 9 hours to get there.
Well, the mental image alone made me laugh! :^:::::::::::
“I came all the way from Holland on a 9 hour plane flight just to do this! *kick*” It just depends on my deadlines, really, not boss-moods. They’re very cool about allowing me time off, but I think we’ve got a lot going on right now.
I’m sorry, don’t all those guys play in the Western Conference? I’m not sure they count.
Oh, yeah, sorry Heather. I forgot about that. :D
Zubrus used to have to actually brace himself for Ovechkin’s goal celebrations.
Having seen Ovechkin rarely play (compared to EC fans) I can honestly say I’ve seen “light” goal scoring celebrations for Ovechkin and they still kind of frighten me.
what was it exactly Doc said and in what context? I’ve never heard him diss Europen players like that. Was he using “excitable” as a euphemism for fighting or something?
I’ll fire up the DVR and find the quote. I was mostly shocked because I recognized Doc’s voice and I couldn’t believe he was saying it. It was definitely not concerning fighting, it was to do with playing.
“4 assists by Backstrom (Swede).”
Yes! I’m so glad I picked that guy up for fantasy!
“I came all the way from Holland on a 9 hour plane flight just to do this! *kick*”
Believe it or not, I said something similar when I met Reekie :P “I flew 11 hours to meet Nat. And to do this *hugs*” Ah, good days.
Little Nicky’s lighting up the NHL, kids! Jump on the Backstrom bandwagon :)
Um, alix? Your team just put Beech on waivers?? What the hell is going on?
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
Or Max Afinogenov. I’m actually frequently (well, not so frequently anymore, goddammit) concerned that he’d going to injure himself with one of his goal celebrations.
For the record, I mentioned that “primarily North American roster” article on my blog and called the the worst idea in the history of ideas. And you’re right Mags, total xenophobe.
The Coyotes just signed Bryzgalov to a 3-year extension: $4 mil in Year 1, $4.25 mil in Year 2 and $4.5 mil in year 3.
Apparently, those NBC commentators have not seen Antti Miettinen, Jussi Jokinen and Niklas Hagman celebrate goals; what the hell.
Or hit, or starts scrums.
I’m sorry, don’t all those guys play in the Western Conference? I’m not sure they count.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I’m thinking there must be more to the story. Maybe Doc meant something else, like Pookie wonders. Because if you didn’t know Antti Miettinen, you might think he was pretty low-key, too.
For the record, I mentioned that “primarily North American roster” article on my blog and called the the worst idea in the history of ideas.
Good for you!
Here’s an idea. If you guys don’t want our players, we don’t want yours. TAKE BACK BELFOUR.
My DVR doesn’t want to freaking fast forward right now, so I’m going to watch this whole thing till the end. And he said it in like, the last 10 minutes. Brilliant. Ask me again in 2 hours or something.
The Coyotes just signed Bryzgalov to a 3-year extension: $4 mil in Year 1, $4.25 mil in Year 2 and $4.5 mil in year 3.
That’s a lot of toasters…
For the record, I mentioned that “primarily North American roster” article on my blog and called the the worst idea in the history of ideas.
I saw your mention of it, Gambler, but I didn’t read the actual article. They weren’t being tongue-in-cheek, were they?
Ah, Mags, don’t worry. Not a big deal at all!
Nice contract, Breezy.
I have no idea if it’s a smart move by the Coyotes in the long run or not, but good for Bryz.
“Um, alix? Your team just put Beech on waivers?? What the hell is going on?”
SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? GAH!! WTF? They gave him like all of one game and 5 minutes of ice time to show what he could do. Coach V decided he didn’t think he was a good enough skater. Ummm…he’s a first rounder!!!! You gave him like 2 seconds of ice time. Why don’t you waive Jeff fucking Cowan instead who has done dick all this year. Or Brad Invisbister. GRRRRRRRR!!! Sorry. Bit of a rage there.
Ah, Mags, don’t worry. Not a big deal at all!
Sure? I’m going to watch it now anyway because they had a bit of the Devils Leafs game at the end. Might as well.
oh my god.
Should I be happy? Peddie just said he’s sort-of letting go (“reduced role”) in hockey operations bc it was one of Fletcher’s demands and we’ll have a new hockey president and wow. I THINK I should be happy. but it sounds too good to be true. And Fletcher says we’ll be drafting well and laying the groundwork for the next GM and he’s sounding like he’s open to trading Mats and… woooow.
it sounds too good to be true. in a really high-risk kind of way. woow.
and, I really feel so bad for JFJ. I kind of want him to stay as Head of Scouting. .__.
and, I’m really happy for Bryz. The Coyotes have plenty of money to spend anyway :D
Whoa, Vinny! Big changes!
They weren’t being tongue-in-cheek, were they?
If he was, he wasn’t very good at getting that feeling across. No, I’m certain he was being totally serious. Arschloch.
By the way, another of his brilliant ideas was to give goaltenders the option of donning the 80′s style of equipment, or giving up their sticks. I bet Luongo would double-quit hockey if that policy went into effect!
another of his brilliant ideas was to give goaltenders the option of donning the 80’s style of equipment, or giving up their sticks.
Who is this guy, and what planet did he come from?
Vinny, WHOA!
Vinny, do you think the Leafs could have waited until after the home and home with the Caps to fire their GM?? Geez. No fair.
IMHO he (Fletcher) looks kind of crazy. and dead.
but hey, if he’s got MLSE to bow down and let him have “full autonomy” (which is complete crap, but Steve Simmons really put it on him… and i guess he means “more autonomy”) then I’m all for it. and plus he’s only interim, and he doesn’t want to stay longer than 19months or after there’s a full permanent replacement…
I just hope Peddie suddenly can’t stay at MLSE anymore and we get someone competent at the top not meddling into hockey affairs.
he’s sounding like he’s open to trading Mats and…
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I have a really great puck-moving defenseman I’ll give you for Mats. Please!
Seriously, sounds like big changes! That’s exciting!
Who is this guy, and what planet did he come from?
the land of make believe.
Sorry CC, if it makes you feel any better, I was full-out cheering for the Caps yesterday…and honestly, I’d feel awesome if we could somehow nab Stamkos this year. I have a feeling even if we squeak into the playoffs, we’r enot good enough to win a Cup.
I have a feeling even if we squeak into the playoffs, we’r enot good enough to win a Cup.
I don’t know what could have given you that idea, Vinny.
and, I really feel so bad for JFJ. I kind of want him to stay as Head of Scouting.
Well, I’m glad they finally did something with him instead of just doing what they were doing: hanging him out to dry, seriously.
Because if you didn’t know Antti Miettinen, you might think he was pretty low-key, too.
Well, until you saw him celebrate one of Ribeiro, Jokinen or Hagman’s goals…not one of his own, though. (Seriously, Mittens? What the hell?) Jokinen jumps ON people after he scores, it’s insane.
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I have a really great puck-moving defenseman I’ll give you for Mats. Please!
What was that Pookie was saying about Doug Armstrong trading a heart-and-soul guy for table scraps? Let’s hope he goes to TO after all!
(Sorry, Patty! @@@@@)
Vinny, that’ll be great if whoever is pulling JFJ’s strings drops them when Fletcher gets there. I only barely know the story there, but it can’t be bad.
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I have a really great puck-moving defenseman I’ll give you for Mats. Please!
his implications were, “it’s up to Mats” (bc of the NTC) but he sounds like he’ll do whatever leads to the best drafting scenario for the Leafs…. so unless you’re willing to give me your next few first rounders :P…..
……. it just sounds too good to be true. Paul Maurice is going to be on the Score now..and then JFJ after.
and i was supposed to be doing work! ahhh…Leafs.
What was that Pookie was saying about Doug Armstrong trading a heart-and-soul guy for table scraps? Let’s hope he goes to TO after all!
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It would be early in the job. That’s when he’s most likely to do it.
Do they need a Swedish defenseman? Cuz he’s the only one I’ll part with. No Tucker, though, please.
Jokinen jumps ON people after he scores, it’s insane.
Hee! Juicy so funny!
TSN’s all over this 0.0 JFJ has more supporters than I think he thinks – he’s ben treated like dirt.
What was that Pookie was saying about Doug Armstrong trading a heart-and-soul guy for table scraps? Let’s hope he goes to TO after all!
(Sorry, Patty! @@@@@)
heh. you never know :P we traded doug gilmour for mats sundin. it might turn out all right.
Hee! Juicy so funny!
I’ll have to find the video of it and send it to you, Mags. It’s hilarious.
Also, we just found out Zubov’s foot injury is not really a foot injury, it’s a groin injury. Jen just sent me an e-mail that said, “Caitlin, what are you doing to your boys this year?” (Mittens and now Zubov have/are battling groin injuries. Sigh.)
Zubov’s out for the All-Star game and Heika says Zubov is “very upset”. I’m really glad I’m not within ten square miles of Sergei Zubov today.
Mittens and now Zubov have/are battling groin injuries. Sigh.
I would make a hoke joke about them walking sideways because you used all their up and down, but you don’t sleep with hockey players.
Poor Russian.
wth, hoke? Mags, what are you on?
but you don’t sleep with hockey players.
As far as you know!
…Just kidding, I really don’t.
wth, hoke? Mags, what are you on?
…Can I have some of whatever you’re having?
As far as you know!
Lucky you! Just don’t tell, because then I’ll have to call you the P word.
…Can I have some of whatever you’re having?
These horse tranquilizers they have me on? Sure! I’m freaking woozy though.
These horse tranquilizers they have me on? Sure! I’m freaking woozy though.
Ooh, that’s no good. How’s the knee? Are you still scheduled to be back on form in a week or so?
aww Mags you okay :(?
(whatever you’re having, horse tranquilizers (not cow :P?) … sound interesting :D)
Apparently it’s not just the knee, but I have the Crosby injury (that’s what Irene called it when she told me. I never laughed and cried so hard at the same time) on top of a badly sprained knee thing. The swelling in my entire leg is still pretty bad and we’ll look at it again when it’s better. At the moment, I have no idea when I’ll be back to playing. Coach apparently ripped Guido to pieces for going that hard during practice though. Poor Guido.
Heika says Zubov is “very upset”.
Dude, I bet. That Russian is one hardcore Russian.
whatever you’re having, horse tranquilizers (not cow :P?) … sound interesting :D
It is interesting. They make me mad sleepy though. I’m scared to look on the box and find our exactly what’s in them, because then I probably won’t want to take them anymore.
So sorry about your knee, Mags! I didn’t realize it was so bad. Nothing’s torn or broken is it?
Apparently it’s not just the knee, but I have the Crosby injury
Oh no!
At the moment, I have no idea when I’ll be back to playing. Coach apparently ripped Guido to pieces for going that hard during practice though. Poor Guido.
Aww, Mags! Well, I hope you get better soon – and poor Guido, although he should have been more careful! Mags is irreplaceable, duh! If you break her…that’s bad!
Nothing’s torn or broken is it?
Not as far as they could tell at the moment. Nothing feels broken, that’s for sure. Just overstretched and badly bruised.
Poor Zubov. I think he really was looking forward to it. I was watching for clues that he might make up a reason not to go, but he seemed genuinely excited.
He waited eight years to be invited, then gets injured. I knew it wasn’t a good idea to play through the foot injury! Why didn’t they call me?
Mags is irreplaceable, duh!
Ha! I’m not Marty! Martin (rookie back up) (again, what’s with all the goalies called Martin?) hasn’t played a game all season. He’s been good in practice and I have all the faith in the world in him.
*sigh* I’m really sad for Russian now. Poor Russian.
Oh, Mags! You’re going to miss the playoffs, aren’t you?
So sorry! How long do they last? Maybe you can come in at the end.
I knew it wasn’t a good idea to play through the foot injury! Why didn’t they call me?
Why didn’t they call any of us! All of us knew that was a bad idea.
All joking aside, Russian did seem pretty excited about the All-Star game, so it makes me really sad he can’t go. The poor man would probably hate what I’ve essentially made up about him, and now he has to go and miss the All-Star game because he’s got a wicked case of crotchache, a banged up foot and a jacked up finger.
Poor man! If Ralph & Razor talk about him being old tonight, I will have a conniption fit.
I’m really sad for Russian now. Poor Russian.
Knowing Russian, he would be sad for you too, Mags, all unable to play and go win with your team!
Mags, I hope your injury heals soon! And if it doesn’t, I hope the horse tranquilizers do you good. :)
You’re going to miss the playoffs, aren’t you?
At least the start. They’re like a month, starting feb 2nd. Because we’re all college students they have a max of 3 games a week. First round is 3 games, second is 3, finals is 5. Maybe I’ll play, I don’t know. I’ll be sad if I can’t though.
But seriously, they’ll be fine. We won 5-2 on Sunday even though we were playing only 6 forwards and 4 D (we lost 4 bodies to a travel issue and already had 2 out with the flu. They’re better now though). They score an average of 8 goals a game, and get 1.3 against. They’ll manage.
I vote they postpone the ASG, just so all the injured starters can play. This is ridiculous!
wow poor russian :( he sounds so totally banged up.
._____. mags i hope you’ll be back to the championship :P
I vote they postpone the ASG, just so all the injured starters can play.
That’s a good idea. Or next time they should notify the players the day before. That way they don’t get injured in anticipation.
Or next time they should notify the players the day before. That way they don’t get injured in anticipation.
I’m totally on board with that.
Smith is in goal tonight, Mags. By the way.
Thanks for the heads up, Patty :)
Smith is in goal tonight, Mags. By the way.
Whee, Smitty, please do awesomely.
That way they don’t get injured in anticipation.
Like jumping in front of pucks to have an excuse not to go?
So I am assuming that Boxworthy strong-armed Marty into bowing out of the ASG so Zach will get further consideration so a Devil will be on the roster. Because, um, Marty so wouldn’t dream of not wanting to go to the ASG.
Marty’s not going?
Apparently not.
He probably heard about that YoungStars event and decided he wanted no part of it. The main game is bad enough for goalies.
Marty’s not going?
What the FUCK?
Marty’s not going?
Well, guess who is? Mike Ribeiro. :D
I’m glad Ribeiro is, but I’m upset that Zubov isn’t. He should have been there, like, 3 years in a row by now. He ain’t gettin’ any younger. Hotter, but not younger.
well now 0.0 the ASG just like, totally turned rosters on me 0.0.
Geez, this is gonna be the worst All-Star Game ever. Marty in the Young Stars game was one of the few things I was looking forward to. (I have no idea why since I know Marty was probably dreading it.)
Oh, I know! As soon as I heard about the stupid YoungStars format, I was like, “Well, they won’t be able to talk Marty into that one.” He never really tries very hard in the regular game (which I appreciate, because if he got hurt in an ASG, I’d kill someone), so I can just imagine him standing there, with that squinting, “are you kidding me???” look on his face while the dopey 3-on-3 crap goes on around him.
I will say this, though: I suddenly recognize the value of the league requiring a player from every team. I mean, I find this year’s rosters to be a thorougly unscintillating collection of players to start out with, but the lack of any Devils means I am well and truly not interested now. I think our game diary of it will be awesomely cranky now.
Well, guess who is? Mike Ribeiro. :D
Good for him :)
He should have been there, like, 3 years in a row by now. He ain’t gettin’ any younger. Hotter, but not younger.
Zubov is so consistently overlooked that this season has been shocking, as far as how much out-of-Dallas press he’s gotten.
I like how you tacked on that “hotter, but not younger” part, Patty. It’s like you’re reading my mind!
He probably heard about that YoungStars event and decided he wanted no part of it.
I don’t blame him! This year’s A-S Game is going to BLOW! Because, uh, previous years’ have been so good?
My ASG experience is ruined. RUINED. I was so looking forward to watching Marty fuck around during the YoungStars.
the lack of any Devils means I am well and truly not interested now
Yeah, even though there is a Sabre there this year I can’t say I’m particularly interested since I’m all, “eww, Campbell.”
I think our game diary of it will be awesomely cranky now.
I’m looking forward to your cranky game diary! I’m taking the weekend off of blogging just so I can sit around here and enjoy the -Ookie awesomeness!
I was kind of hoping that Zubov would still go, and hang out at the Superskills so we can see him joking around with the guys, then beg off the game because he “aggravated” his injury.
I think our game diary of it will be awesomely cranky now.
We should diarize me playing Super Mario Galaxy instead. No, wait, that wouldn’t be much better. OK, how about Katamari?
I was so looking forward to watching Marty fuck around during the YoungStars.
He could’ve been mic’d up. That would have been awesome.
Is there a Devil on the roster at all now?
Personally, I am SHOCKED that no other Sabres have been called on to fill all these suddenly empty spots.
I usually tune out of the game anyway. I just watch the skills stuff.
I’m looking forward to your cranky game diary!
Just for you, we’ll make it extra cranky!
We should diarize me playing Super Mario Galaxy instead.
You should do that anyway, because I want to know where you are in the game. Have you done the dumbass ghost race with the pull stars? I suck at that one.
Is there a Devil on the roster at all now?
Not yet, but there’s still a few days for Boxworthy to take out Mike Richards.
Is there a Devil on the roster at all now?
No there isn’t, which means that Zach’s diabolical plan is almost complete. Now we just need one more forward to go down, and they’ll have to pick him!
I honestly figured Marty would have found a way to beg off the YoungStars thing if he actually had gone to the game. There was no way he was going to participate in that.
Personally, I am SHOCKED that no other Sabres have been called on to fill all these suddenly empty spots.
HONK for Goose as a replacement. The teams need some steak to complement the sizzle already on the roster.
I did kind of hope Staffy would have made the Young Stars, but maybe next year.
Have you done the dumbass ghost race with the pull stars?
I’m pretty good with pull stars, actually. I needed Schnookie to do the gray sticky globby things, but pull stars I’ve got. I’m currently in the Engine Room galaxy, working on beating the Cosmic Comet on the level with the bee suit and the clouds.
I did kind of hope Staffy would have made the Young Stars, but maybe next year.
I figured Travis would be a Young Star, too. I guess there’s no love in the NHL for UND’s most famous Battle of the Bands participants.
Not yet, but there’s still a few days for Boxworthy to take out Mike Richards.
Little do we know he’s making a deal with Derian Hatcher to take out Richards and Briere.
Speaking of Boxworthy, my boss got back yesterday from a week in Mexico on business with a bunch of the other guys and she brought me a little souvenir.
It’s a tiny little brightly-colored bobblehead turtle. I think it’s Boxworthy’s cousin from Mexico, Rodrigo.
I figured Travis would be a Young Star, too. I guess there’s no love in the NHL for UND’s most famous Battle of the Bands participants.
Is this a literal Battle of the Bands or the friendly competition between Toe Drag and Red Seal Peach?
Just for you, we’ll make it extra cranky!
Aww, guys! You’re really too sweet to me!
I was kind of hoping that Zubov would still go, and hang out at the Superskills so we can see him joking around with the guys, then beg off the game because he “aggravated” his injury.
Hahahha! Yeah, he’d be joking around, but in the next instant, he’d be skating over to the cameraman to tell him, “You film me, I break your fingers, one by one.”
Little do we know he’s making a deal with Derian Hatcher to take out Richards and Briere.
Little does he know that Hatcher will accidentally take out Marty Biron, instead.
I think it’s Boxworthy’s cousin from Mexico, Rodrigo.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Rodrigo’s got a nice life of leisure on the beach while Boxworthy works his hands to the bone for Zach. It’s a bit sad.
Is this a literal Battle of the Bands or the friendly competition between Toe Drag and Red Seal Peach?
Oh, there was nothing friendly about the competition between Toe Drag and RSP! :P
(I’m kidding. I have no idea. As far as I know, there is no Battle of the Bands, but with these guys, you really never know… I’ll just say that Travis seemed very disappointingly friendly with Jordy at training camp. I had really hoped they hated each other from their days as members of rival bands. :P)
I’m currently in the Engine Room galaxy, working on beating the Cosmic Comet on the level with the bee suit and the clouds.
Yerch, I’m so bad with the pull stars. I love the bee suits though, they were cute. I loved racing my shadow there when the comet was in orbit. Maddening, but cool once you get there.
Little do we know he’s making a deal with Derian Hatcher to take out Richards and Briere.
Little does he know that Hatcher will accidentally take out Marty Biron, instead.

:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Do you think in practice they make him wear a reflective jersey or something, just so all the players know where he is at all times so if he gets too close they can respond appropriately?
“Derian, you’re too close! Too close, man!”
Yeah, he’d be joking around, but in the next instant, he’d be skating over to the cameraman to tell him, “You film me, I break your fingers, one by one.”

I did send 2 copies of that note to the Flyers’ training facility care of D. Hatcher and D. Briere. After the Lupul thing. It was tasteless, but I felt compelled.
Well, guess who is? Mike Ribeiro. :D
Yaaayy
he should’ve been on the roster in the first place.
Hey, I just realized Shane Doan is a Tally-Ho! I had no idea! So now yesterday’s loss wasn’t a TOTAL loss.
I did send 2 copies of that note to the Flyers’ training facility care of D. Hatcher and D. Briere. After the Lupul thing. It was tasteless, but I felt compelled.
Mags, I heart you.
Really and truly.
However, we have to assume that should Derian have actually received it, he had to find someone to read it to him. Sorry, Hatch.
However, we have to assume that should Derian have actually received it, he had to find someone to read it to him. Sorry, Hatch.
Not only that, but that person would have had to explain it to him too. Oh, Hatch.
Hey, I just realized Shane Doan is a Tally-Ho! I had no idea! So now yesterday’s loss wasn’t a TOTAL loss.
I have to say, Doan has been doing some very good work for the Chinchillas. He’s been a good pickup, even if I do have an absurd number of right wings.
Derian have actually received it
Yeah, hi, my grammar rocks today.
Not only that, but that person would have had to explain it to him too. Oh, Hatch.
The way I imagine Derian is like Stan’s evil clone that goes horribly awry from that one episode of South Park.
Hey, I just realized Shane Doan is a Tally-Ho! I had no idea!
JFJ could take a lesson from you, Heather! :P
How bad is that I didn’t even know he was on my team? Oh, yeah, that guy! I’m telling you, my team is good through absolutely no fault of my own.
The way I imagine Derian is like Stan’s evil clone that goes horribly awry from that one episode of South Park.
Never seen it, but knowing South Park I can probably think of where that went.
my team is good through absolutely no fault of my own.
Now I’m depressed that you handed me my ass, even though I tried so hard not to lose. I was doing so good too!
Last year I tried really hard to win and I buried my team so my new method is to just set up my line-up – if I remember – and see what happens.
Last year I tried really hard to win and I buried my team so my new method is to just set up my line-up – if I remember – and see what happens.
I’ve tried both these methods and both put at 11th. (Sorry, Meatballs.)
Last year I tried really hard to win and I buried my team so my new method is to just set up my line-up – if I remember – and see what happens.
That may be an emotionally healthier way to go.
Little does he know that Hatcher will accidentally take out Marty Biron, instead.
Marty might come out of that collision a little bit better than Danny due to all his goalie padding.
Marty might come out of that collision a little bit better than Danny due to all his goalie padding.
That’s a relief. Poor Joffrey Lupul.
Poor palindrome.
Poor palindrome.
Careful, alix. There might be some Flyers fans reading and we don’t want to confuse them. :P
I was just wondering where the -Ookies were, and here is Schnookie.
And yeah, poor Lupul
Marty might come out of that collision a little bit better than Danny due to all his goalie padding.
That’s what I thought too.
Poor palindrome.
I know what a palindrome is, but it still sounds like a name for a stadium.
I know what a palindrome is, but it still sounds like a name for a stadium.
Like the Palin Drome? Heee.
Aww, yay, they’re sending Malkin to the All-Star game! (Sorry, -Ookies.)
Aww, yay, they’re sending Malkin to the All-Star game!
And Timmy Thomas! I’m happy for him.
That’s cool about Tim Thomas, but doesn’t that leave out the Devils altogether? That’s not right!
Ya, that’s not cool that no other Devil’s are going.
doesn’t that leave out the Devils altogether?
Nope, no Devils going to the ASG at the moment.
This is turning into the “All-Stars but not really” game.
OT: Holy crap. Heath Ledger’s dead.
And Scott Niedermayer? Hasn’t he only played 17 games?
I guess when you multiply his greatness by 17, it comes out to be way more than all the other defensemen in the league.
That’s not right!
Especially because Scott Niedermeyer gets to go….seriously? People on Heika’s blog were pointing out that he’s only played 17 games this season.
OT: Holy crap. Heath Ledger’s dead.
WTF?!?!
Holy crap. Heath Ledger’s dead.
WHAT?! WHAT!? Please tell me this is a joke, as I flove Heath.
Patty: Same brain, same brain….
Oh, that’s a sad one.
WHAT?! WHAT!? Please tell me this is a joke, as I flove Heath.
No joke. Its breaking news on cnn.com
Gosh I’m pissed Scott Neidermeyer’s going! Yeah, Scotty, show everybody how to be an all star slacker.
Yay Malkin! I LOVE watching that kid, even though it does look like he rides the special bus.
“Careful, alix. There might be some Flyers fans reading and we don’t want to confuse them. :P”
Heh heh heh.
Wtf. I immediately ran to ONTD they find info.
holy shit.
“Holy crap. Heath Ledger’s dead.”
Oh my gosh! Isn’t he only like 29 or something? So sad!
No joke. Its breaking news on cnn.com
Yeah, I wish they’d tell me more about it since “found dead in a Manhattan apartment” isn’t cutting it for me. Thank you very much for the heads-up, Amy! (Sad, sad.)
Man, I was so happy that he got the part of the Joker in The Dark Knight as well. While I love Adrien Brody, I thought Heath was perfect for it, and all of the preliminary stuff coming out featuring Heath as the Joker has him nailing it.
Our local news is reporting he was found surrounded by pills.
Heath Ledger . . . so sad. Doesn’t he have a little girl?
OT: Holy crap. Heath Ledger’s dead.
o…
Ya, I don’t think the baby is too old either :( that is so sad.
Yeah, I think she’s like 1 or something.
That’s awful!
It’s going to be so sad watching the new Batman movie now :(
I was looking forward to it too.
Well at least he’ll still be in it. It’s listed as being in post-production so all the filming should be done.
Batman Begins is done but shit, that’s gonna be pretty damn depressing to watch now. Holy smokes.
Sorry, I meant The Dark Knight. I’m all rattled now!
Understandable. I have an urge to watch 10 things i hate about you and cry the entire time.
Batman Begins is done but shit, that’s gonna be pretty damn depressing to watch now. Holy smokes.
No kidding. His daughter is named Matilda, and Matilda’s mom is Michelle Williams of Dawson’s Creek/Brokeback Mountain fame.
The poor kid is 2 years old.
I feel like finding A Knight’s Tale and just watching that a hundred times. He was so pretty.
I wasn’t actually a huge fan (although I love 10 Things I Hate About You), but I was totally stoked about his Joker and it’s just a total WTF. I mean, there are plenty of people in Hollywood who I fully expect to die before they get too old, but he wasn’t on the list.
there are plenty of people in Hollywood who I fully expect to die before they get too old, but he wasn’t on the list.
Word!
I loved him in almost everything he was in. I sat through Ned Kelly (and the horror of Orlando Bloom) for Heath.
there are plenty of people in Hollywood who I fully expect to die before they get too old, but he wasn’t on the list.
So true.
the horror of Orlando Bloom
Don’t be hating Orliander now, he’s also quite pretty.
Poor guy. Such a waste.
Don’t be hating Orliander now, he’s also quite pretty.
See, I don’t see it. I also think he’s a crudtacular actor.
I’m really shocked to hear about Heath Ledger though. I’m admittedly not a big fan either but he was quite young, wasn’t he?
Sherry, I’m with you on Orlado. Not attractive and not talented.
I believe Heath was 28 or 29. I know he wasn’t 30 yet.
he’s a crudtacular actor.
Aye, that is true.
Rumor is that one of the Olsen twins was with him. Haven’t actually seen that on the real news.
Rumor is that one of the Olsen twins was with him.
…Quoi?
I’m so confused. Seriously?
Rumor is that one of the Olsen twins was with him.
We’ll see eh?
I’m going to bed. See you for the Stars game.
Rumor is that one of the Olsen twins was with him.
The report I read on IMDB said he was found in an apartment that was owned by Mary-Kate Olsen, but apparently she was out of State.
I’m going to bed. See you for the Stars game.
Awww, yay, Mags!
See you for the Stars game.
Yay!
Good night!
I heard them on the radio (sports talk) saying that it was her apartment…
First celebrity death in quite a while that I’ve had any reaction to. Man, I liked him.
I heard them on the radio (sports talk) saying that it was her apartment…
WTF.
Reports are saying now that it WASN’T MK Olsen’s apartment. I’m confused.
TMZ and Fox News say it wasn’t her apartment.
the last post I have here is at 6:36 so someone may have said it by now, but I read it was her apt. and he was subletting it. She’s supposedly in CA.
oh, now I’m seeing it wasn’t. Times like these when the internets are bad…I don’t mind waiting to get the right info about somebody’s death.
Oh, and hi.
Hey, PG!
I agree about that. TMZ was the one the radio dorks quoted as saying it was her apartment.
I’m thinking I’ll check on it tomorrow and it’ll have settled down a little.
I wonder if guys like Drury or Gomez would ever stop to think that they did the wrong thing. I mean, if guys like that did, wouldn’t Holik have talked Gomez out of signing with NY?
OK, I know I’m really late with this (that’s what having way too much work will do to you). However, Gomez actually called Holik when he was considering where to sign (this was before July 1st, so, yes, he already knew he was leaving and knew he meant to sign in NY – but since Bobby didn’t play for NY there was no tampering, at least in regard to speaking to Holik). Bobby told him to go for it. Don’t ask me. You’d think after his experience there he would think it wasn’t worth it but either Bobby is still bitter about how it ended in NJ or he just thinks the combination of the $$$ and the so-called ‘aura’ of NY was worth the lousy time he had there. Whatever. Anyway, the two of them did speak. The result was Gomez standing in front of the microphones nodding in agreement when Renney blamed NJ for Gomez’ lack of production.
It’s all moot in terms of Gomez coming back to NJ. He wasn’t coming back. But I still wonder about the advice about where to sign. Meh. I just hope Lou doesn’t trade for the washed-up unibrow at the deadline.
