A Tasty Tribute To A Hero
February 22, 2008 by Schnookie
We realize a major milestone was passed this week without much fanfare from the NHL. No, we can’t understand why it wasn’t headline news on NHL.com, but since when has the NHL been smart about realizing who its most important players are? Yeah, what we’re talking about is Pando’s 200th career point, which he notched with an assist on the day that shall live in, well, not infamy… Is “famy” a word? No? Wait, where were we? Oh, right. Pando’s 200th point. It came on February 20th, against the Sharks, thanks to Thomas Greiss giving up a soft goal to Sergei Brylin. We expect the video to be played on an endless loop forevermore at the Hall of Fame. We also expect standing ovations and video tributes from 29 other teams over the next season.
To commemorate the joyous event at stately IPB Manor, we did what every citizen of PandoNation should have done: baked a cake.
Yeah, yeah, the cake ended up baking on a tilt because somebody didn’t slide the oven rack correctly onto the runners on the oven walls (*cough*Pookie*cough*), and the “red” frosting was more more “coral” than anything else because somebody isn’t very good at making frosting (*cough*Schnookie*cough*), but really, would Pando want it any other way? It didn’t look perfect, it had flaws, and piping the too-thick chocolate frosting on the number outlines was a laborious, slow-moving, herky-jerky process that recalled Pando’s skating style, but in the end, it all turned out divinely.
Mmm… Pando cake.
And what’s the best part about 200 points? It has a built-in tribute:

Herky-jerky is a freakin great word. Or two words…or a hyphenated word.
Anyways. Hooray for Pando!!!!!! What a great milestone. And that cake looks delicious. When Paulie hits a milestone, will you be having pot cake?
Now I feel a little bad because I didn’t make an 84 cake for Matty O when he hit 84 goals and became the franchise leading goal scoring defenceman. But a belated cake would still work, right?
It is never too late for an 84 cake! I’m sure Matty would love it. I know for a fact that somewhere wherever Pando is, he’s feeling great knowing his subject/serfs are properly sacrificing flour, eggs, sugar, cocoa and buttermilk to their emperor/god.
alix, we celebrate Paulie with a pot cake EVERY day. :P
I will make an 84 cake then! Tomorrow! Before I go to the game. Surely all that cake sacrificing will give us enough good karma to beat the Wings.
I`m so glad to hear that, Schnookie :D I will let up on the Paulie pot jokes eventually…maybe…

NEVER! It’s never not funny! The day I let up on the Paulie pot jokes is the day you should take me out behind the barn and shoot me! :P
You should send us pictures of the 84 cake! We want to see the sacrificial cake that inspires Matty to greatness tomorrow.

Never!
Well in that case…Paulie brought pot brownies to Mason Raymond and Vern Fiddler`s bake sale, and everyone got really stoned and rocked out to Toe Drag and Red Seal Peach songs. While wearing fake moustaches.
I will try to send you pictures, but it won`t be as pretty as IPB bake wares.
alix, :^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It’s not how pretty the bake wares look, it’s the spirit of the heartfelt sacrifice to your emperor/god. :)
but it won`t be as pretty as IPB bake wares.
Dude, that blobby picture of the piece of cake? That was the best of all the pictures we took. We are not very gifted food stylists. :P
Paulie must have gotten HUGELY stoned to be wearing a fake mustache! I mean, that’s a UND thing, and he’s a Gopher! He probably woke up the next morning, felt the mustache glue on his upper lip, and, unable to remember what he’d done the night before, vowed to clean up his act and never eat pot brownies again. Of course, he then got out of bed and started his day with a tasty slice of pot coffee cake, just like he always does. It’s the breakfast of gopher champions.
Man, Paulie must be happy 24/7. The world would be such a mellow place if everyone ate Paulie`s breakfast.
I trust you’re willing to send some of that out to those bloggers who have singled out Pandolfo as the quintessential Devil??
Excellent…I’ll keep my eye on the mailbox :)
I’ll keep my eye on the mailbox :)
Sure thing! I’ll just squish a piece of cake into an evelope, address it “To Mike” and send that Blersus mail. You should see it… um… never. I knew I should have sent it FedEx!
Pando cake! Yummy! It looks delicious.
If you’d seen the first attempt at black frosting you might think otherwise. We tried mixing blue and brown food coloring and got this weird aqua color. We added more brown and some purple and ended up with an algae-like color. I decided we were too aware that it had been blue and it was effecting our decision-making abilities. So I showed it to Boomer and said, “What color is this?” She thought long and hard and said, “Lush Spring mud.”
Hmmmmm cake. Me wanty toooooo.
Black frosting works best if you start with chocolate frosting. But I’m sure you knew that :)
Black frosting works best if you start with chocolate frosting.
Or the kind that comes in a tube already black. But it doesn’t taste nearly as good. :D
Beautiful cake! I was amazed at the numbers and the outline until I read the description and now they seem kinda cheezy. Just kidding! It looks awesome!
How did you get the numbers so well-shaped? Did you pipe the red and fill it in? Or just spread it all around in the shape of a 200? If it had been me, I’d have piped the black/brown outline first and then been all mad that it got all in my red.
I piped the red outline, then filled it in by piping enough to smear around inside it, and then piped the outline (which was, as we said in the post, ridonkulously difficult because our chocolate frosting was super-thick and didn’t want to pipe nicely through our fine tip).
We also forgot to cover the cake up last night, so I’m fairly confident it would arrive in Mike’s mailbox in a shape that’s pretty similar to how it is now, since it’s now all crusty and hard. :P

It’s just like store-bought! :D But probably still tastes much better.

Hmmm yummy :P
I should have done something like this for Marty’s 500th win. I feel bad now.
It’s just like store-bought!
Exactly! But lumpier, more misshapen, and a bit more Pandoriffic. :P
since it’s now all crusty and hard. :P
Also, that’s what she said.

*grin* Nice.
I’m glad someone else likes to make cakes and draw on them for sports occasions. Only I have a tendency to attempt to draw people which has turned out very interesting.
Eeee! I’m in Vancouver. 3 hours to go until I get to stare at Matty!
Yay, alix! You stare at Matty! :D
