We were born with the gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad. Thus, l’affair Tranny Bride.
Oh, Gentle Reader, it’s been such a topsy-turvy Spring for us. There are two givens in the life of a Devils fan: the Rangers are vile and the Flyers are vile. The viler of the two varies with the ebbing and flowing of the NHL tides, but the fact that the vileness of both remains constant. So what could possibly possess us during these playoffs to make it so, at this late a date, we can honestly say our favorite non-Devils team of this post season was Philadelphia? Clearly, the only explanation is that we are too quick to laugh (at ourselves) and the world has gone completely mad. But the time for merriment and mirth has passed — it is with a twinkle in our eyes but bile in our throats that we are wiping off our orange face paint and writing an open letter to the Philadelphia Flyers:
It was a wonderful run, Flyers. When the matchups were set in April and you drew the Caps, we knew a marriage of convenience would follow. But it was like some crazy screwball Hollywood comedy, where the opposites who have become surprise spouses discover through madcap adventures that they truly do love each other. You were a Vegas tranny bride, to be sure, but while the playoffs kept us sloppy drunk, you remained one smokin’ hot Vegas tranny bride. You beat the strangely hatable Caps in a thrilling seven games, then mopped the ice with a surprisingly unappealing Habs, and with every passing day we were further convinced that our Vegas tranny marriage would be the one that beats the odds.
Alas, we couldn’t run far enough or fast enough to outrace your true identity. Under all that foxy Vegas tranny get-up, you’re still the Flyers. And you still suck. (Seriously, Biron? Really? Her?) We wanted you to beat the Pens, and we wanted this wild ride of ours to last forever, but it wasn’t meant to be. It shouldn’t be. We’re Devils fans. You’re the Flyers . Our illicit love was a fun way to pass a few weeks, but it’s over. So, um… please stop calling us, okay? And let’s just pretend this never happened.

Go Stars go! Go Stars go!
I feel like I’m going to throw up. Hockey stresses me out too much.
Is it wrong that in the CBC opening I couldn’t stop staring at Lidstrom’s arms as he tied his skates? They were mesmerizing.
I HATE YOU, RED WINGS.
Booooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
“Awkward angle”? Yeah, I think you could call scoring off Kris Draper’s face as “scoring from an awkward angle”.
Ha, Draper, literally taking one for the team
Um, what the hell was that, Russian?
Dear Ookies,
You can’t just throw us away like a used up thunderstix. We’re coming over to stand underneath your window with a boombox playing “In Your Eyes”. We are never going to let you forget that you love the Flyers. Never. Ever.
Love,
The Flyers
PS- Downie loves you most of all.
Dear Flyers,
The attraction was based 100% on your post-season selves. The post-season is over. Take your boom box and shove it where the sun don’t shine!
Love,
The Ookies
P.S. Downie was never part of the equation.
Dear Ookies,
We shoved the boom box where the sun don’t shine, and we find we still love you.
Love,
The Flyers
PS- Downie is crying his eyes out. Thanks a lot. He’s impossible to calm down once he gets started.
Dear Flyers,
We TOLD YOU that Downie was never part of our arrangement. Seriously. You never listen. You never care about OUR needs. And you wonder why things didn’t work out between us.
It’s over.
Regards,
The Ookies
Dear Ookies,
It’s never over. Not with us. (Meep)
Love and wet kisses,
The Flyers

Erm, I’m supposing the Stars aren’t doing so hot now?
Dear Flyers,
I believe you’ll find that the paperwork you just received from our lawyers stipulates you can’t come within 200 yards of us. Don’t make us call the police.
Not making empty threats,
The Ookies
No, Caitlin, they’re not. I’m so sorry! There’s still lots of Brahms left to be played, though!
Yeah, Caitlin, I think it’s safe for you to watch now. :(
Caitlin, it’s totally safe for you to watch. Like, WAY safe.
Caitlin, it’s totally safe for you to watch. Like, WAY safe.
Er…after the day I had, I think I will um, pass.
Holy shit, 3-0?
Yeah, 3-0. After about five minutes of pouting, I’ve decided to sit tall and proud, and stubbornly proclaim that my team can still do it. It doesn’t help me to stab my own eyes out, after all.
*whimper*
I’m so sorry, Stars fans!
Dude, what the hell? I walk away for ten minutes and when I come back it’s 3-0? Come on, Stars! Go, go, go!
While I am still sitting tall and proud of my team (because really, no matter the outcome of this game, I’m proud of my team), I will admit…
I have started drinking.
I think you’re allowed, Cat. And you should be proud of your team–whatever else they’ve made a series of it.
(because really, no matter the outcome of this game, I’m proud of my team)
As you should be! They’ve been valiant warriors this Spring! (And there’s still plenty of
Brahmshockey to be played here.…Still sitting tall. Proud of my team. Sit tall. Proud. Must repeat mantra.
…And drink more Strongbow.
Either I killed the thread, or the Stars did.
Yeah, Cat, we’ve all gone somewhere else so we don’t have to talk to the crazy sittin’ tall chick. :P
Seriously, though, this has been a very quiet-inducing game, hasn’t it?
I changed the channel in hopes that it would help…so far not so much
Yeah, I have a pretty severe case of The Mondays; I blame that and the Stars.
Seriously, though, this has been a very quiet-inducing game, hasn’t it?
I haven’t been paying too much attention to the crowd noise at the AAC on the television, but I bet it’s rather quiet there.
Yeah, that’s got to be a huge bummer to be at the game tonight, and have paid so much to see this. Of course, they get to cheer the team and thank them for a great season, but still. This is the kind of game that reminds a fan how nice it is to be able to watch on the TV, while wearing pajamas.
That was just Morrow saying, “Hey guy? There’s still Brahms left to be played!”
WOOOOOOOOO!!!!! ROBI!!!
Eeeek. Come on Starsies!
The Stars have upped the toughness factor just now because they don’t want to be called “Starsies”! :D
Yeah, I think “Starsies” made them angry. :P
HA HA! That’s what I was hoping for :D
I am so sorry, Stars fans. So sorry.
The crowd sounds AWESOME, though! This was a magical team that accomplished a ton. You wheaty fans should be proud of your team tonight!
Aw, Stars fans, I’m so sorry. They really were a lovable, valiant lot, though. What a great run here in the playoffs. I’m so, so, so, so sorry it had to be the Wings.
The SCF doesn’t start until fucking SATURDAY? What the fucking fuck? What is WRONG with the NHL???
That schedule sucks! Why are they dragging it out so much?! And why is it scheduled for two Wednesday nights? Do the schedulers not read IPB?! :P
You know what, I’m way less disappointed than I thought I’d be. I’m so proud of my team for what they did this season.
I’m so, so, so, so sorry it had to be the Wings.
Yeah, that’s the part that sucks.
The SCF doesn’t start until fucking SATURDAY? What the fucking fuck? What is WRONG with the NHL???
OH MY GOD, I KNOW. That’s what I yelled at the TV. I already had to watch my team lose, now I have to wait almost a FULL WEEK for more hockey?!
I’m so proud of my team for what they did this season.
As you should be! That was an awesome and well-deserved ovation the fans gave them in the final minute of the game tonight. I think the Stars are a really great example of how winning the Cup isn’t the only way to have a successful season, you know?
I already had to watch my team lose, now I have to wait almost a FULL WEEK for more hockey?!
I just can’t even FATHOM this. You want to know how dire it is? We’ve checked National Treasure out of the library, and now we’re going to have to watch it because there is no fucking hockey on! NATIONAL TREASURE, people! Hey, NHL schedulers — have you no shame?
That was an awesome and well-deserved ovation the fans gave them in the final minute of the game tonight.
I was SO AFRAID that the fans there would boo. I think the ovation was another reason I felt that whole pride thing. Aww, Stars. I love you so much!
We’ve checked National Treasure out of the library, and now we’re going to have to watch it because there is no fucking hockey on!
Dear God, that IS dire! I’m going to have to send my two Netflix movies that I’ve actually watched back ASAP, to get more to watch before SATURDAY (fucking NHL).
You want to know how dire it is? We’ve checked National Treasure out of the library, and now we’re going to have to watch it
That really is bad.
Fortunately my roommate and I are moving on to season 3 of The Wire so at least I have agood viewing option. You’re just in a bad situation.
Cat, you should be super-proud of the Stars! And yeah, you should definitely send those Netflix movies back. Saturday feels like ages away!
SATURDAY?!?! That’s REDONK! Sugarplums! What the fuck am I supposed to blog about?
My family finally found out I have a blog this weekend. It’s kind of weird.
Sugarplums! What the fuck am I supposed to blog about?
I love the juxtaposition between “sugarplums!” and “what the fuck”. :D And that’s hilarious about your family finding out about your blog. What did they think of it?
Meg, I wish I had Season 3 of “The Wire” to watch for the first time this week. (I realize I have Season 5 on our DVR, though, so I don’t know what I’m planning on watching National Treasure for…)
Meg, you and your roommate are zipping through “The Wire”! It’s really hard not to watch just one more episode, isn’t it? Now that you’ve watched 2 seasons, I hope you’ll find this funny:
Our older sister prides herself on being too smart for TV and movies. A few Christmases ago we gave her the DVDs. We popped in the first episode and after an hour asked her what she thought. “Oh,” she sniffed, “it’s okay. I mean, I can see exactly what’s going to happen. The good guys will prevail, the bad guys will lose. Whatever.” The rest of us couldn’t help but crack up at that! (One episode later she was thoroughly hooked on it.)
(I realize I have Season 5 on our DVR, though, so I don’t know what I’m planning on watching National Treasure for…)
I’m impressed that you have Season 5 just sitting there. My roommate and I have no self control. The new DVDs arrive from Netflix and we’re like, “Great! We can watch 5 episodes tonight!”
(Ok, actually, we always stop at one disc a night, but still.)
I realize I have Season 5 on our DVR, though, so I don’t know what I’m planning on watching National Treasure for…
I would say “because National Treasure won’t make me want to kill myself” but… It might. It just might. :D
The new DVDs arrive from Netflix and we’re like, “Great! We can watch 5 episodes tonight!”
We think we would aim for 3 but then the music would start up at the end of the 3rd and it was always, “Uno mas! Uno mas!”
“Oh,” she sniffed, “it’s okay. I mean, I can see exactly what’s going to happen. The good guys will prevail, the bad guys will lose. Whatever.” The rest of us couldn’t help but crack up at that!
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I’m impressed that you have Season 5 just sitting there. My roommate and I have no self control.
Yeah, we absolutely TORE through the first three seasons on DVD (but yeah, also limited to one disc a night…), and then watched Season 4 in real time. It was… difficult. Season 4 was just SO much more emotionally grueling than the first three seasons, so it was really, REALLY hard to watch it on Sunday nights in the middle of the hockey season. We decided if we saved Season 5 we wouldn’t have to downshift from hockey to “The Wire” and we also wouldn’t have to wait full weeks between episodes. It wasn’t an easy choice to make, but we learned the hard way that it’s better to watch in big blocks.
I love the juxtaposition between “sugarplums!” and “what the fuck”. :D
Hee. Yeah. I was trying a no swearing kick today. But it comes and goes. :D
And that’s hilarious about your family finding out about your blog. What did they think of it?
They loved it, and think it’s “awesome”. And I think they said something about my “voice”. My mother said something about my double life. It’s just kind of funny if I go on about Matty being a hot bitch now, I know they might be reading it. Although it’s not like I’ve written about us having threesomes…heh.
At least I have season finales of good shows to look forward to. In fact, Bones and House are currently waiting for me.
Although it’s not like I’ve written about us having threesomes…heh.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
That’s cool that they’ve enjoyed it, though!
In fact, Bones and House are currently waiting for me.
And House is a double-episode! He might risk a patient’s life or go too far twice!
I’m so glad your family likes THG, alix! Of course, they’d be stupid not to… :D
Season 4 was just SO much more emotionally grueling than the first three seasons
I told my roommate that you said that (I remember you mentioning it earlier) so we’re bracing ourselves.
That’s cool that they’ve enjoyed it, though!
It is. They were really sweet about it.
I’m so glad your family likes THG, alix! Of course, they’d be stupid not to… :D
Awww. Thanks, Schnookie.
And House is a double-episode! He might risk a patient’s life or go too far twice!
HA HA HA!!
Well, I think it’s time for me to call it a night. Once again, I’m sorry, Stars fans! Good night, everyone!
I told my roommate that you said that (I remember you mentioning it earlier) so we’re bracing ourselves.
It’s also as good as Season 1, which Seasons 2 and 3 weren’t (3 is better than 2, in case you’re thinking, “Well that was a precipitous drop-off…”), so it still has a lot going for it! :D I really am so glad that you and your roommate are enjoying it.
And I’m going to take advantage of this henceforth hockeyless night and turn in early. G’night everyone, and yay Stars, just for being so cool!
Woops. Missed everybody.
I’m a little teary-eyed from the cheering they got. I was hoping they’d do a wave to the crowd, but the trophy thing got in the way.
alix, I saw your cousin on On the Fly on the NHL Network last night!
It’s also as good as Season 1, which Seasons 2 and 3 weren’t (3 is better than 2, in case you’re thinking, “Well that was a precipitous drop-off…”)
I might have been, so I’m glad to hear it.
Good night everyone!
Thanks, everybody, for turning into Stars fans and cheering them along. It makes me feel all warm inside.
Good morning, IPB! That sound you hear is me hopping on fully to the Pens bandwagon.
Good morning, Caitlin! I suspect the Pens are very happy to have you on their bandwagon! :D (I also suspect it’s sunny and wonderful and bright in CaitlinLand, because it’s cold and rainy here and I have a terrible headache from the humidity. It’s killing me from the inside!)
I also suspect it’s sunny and wonderful and bright in CaitlinLand, because it’s cold and rainy here and I have a terrible headache from the humidity.
Schnookie, that’s terrible! I am so sorry about your headache, but yes, it is sunny and rather warm here. If you’re like me and you’re always cold, I live for warm weather.
I’m actually not a huge fan of warm weather, although I’d be happy for this plong, drawn-out Spring to start rumbling its way toward Summer any day now…
We set records yesterday. It was officially 99 degrees at the airport yesterday afternoon. It was 102 in Wichita Falls (up near the OK state line).
I’m not looking foreward to the heat ONE BIT. But, the sooner summer gets here, the sooner it will be over.
But, the sooner summer gets here, the sooner it will be over.
That’s the spirit! :D (I remember Doc mentioning during last night’s game that the temps were over 100 in your neck of the woods. I felt SO BAD for y’all. Why can’t summer just be, like, 85 degrees all the time?)
Help me up, Caitlin! I’m climbing on the Pens bandwagon, too! :D
See y’all this evening (probably be too busy at work today). Tell andrew I said hey. And tell alix I saw her cousin on TV! :D
Why can’t summer just be, like, 85 degrees all the time?
Really! Is that too much to ask?!
Have a good day, Patty!
Help me up, Caitlin! I’m climbing on the Pens bandwagon, too! :D
::extends arm:: Quickly, Patty! Get up! :D
I’m trying to pick a Pens favorite, but I can’t decide. Damn!
I felt SO BAD for y’all.
Don’t feel bad for me! I love it! Seriously, when I see the thermometer hit triple digits, I get sooo excited. I’m a freak, I know.
::extends arm:: Quickly, Patty! Get up!
Oh, there’s no reason to rush — the SCF doesn’t start for another MONTH or so… :P
And you are SUCH a freak, Caitlin! Who likes triple-digit weather in Dallas? I mean, it’s one thing if it’s 105 in Arizona and bone dry, so it doesn’t feel that bad, but 100 and humid? No thank you!
I used to think I was happiest with weather in the 50s. Since it seems hell-bent on staying in the 50s around here, I’m beginning to see the error of my ways. The 70s would be nice.
Good morning IPB.
Well, I’m sad but feel like a very proud mom this morning. The Stars did so much more than I expected and have meant so much to our family and helping us rebuild emotionally after some tough times. Hockey is really great therapy!
Also, I won $10 at Bunco last night by having the most “losses”. I stayed at the loser table all the way through the 1st period. I found that some what ironic. :)
I hate hot weather but that’s part of living in Texas.
Who likes triple-digit weather in Dallas?
You have to understand, I feel about 10 to 15 degrees colder than everyone else. The people in my office mock me because I always have a jacket on. So summer is nice, because I’m warm but still feeling cooler than everyone else! Heh!
And Myra, I was proud of them too. I didn’t watch, but they’ve done a very good job this year. Yay Stars!
I’m hot all the time. I don’t know what is going to happen to me when I reach menopause. I’m afraid I might be one of those people who spontaneously combust. :(
and have meant so much to our family and helping us rebuild emotionally after some tough times. Hockey is really great therapy!
It really is! That’s so great that your family was able to find so much happiness in hockey this season — the getting to the WCF is just gravy in the face of something like that!
And congrats on being the big winner loser at Bunco, Myra! :P
I feel about 10 to 15 degrees colder than everyone else.
Okay, well… I guess that makes sense… :PPP
That’s so great that your family was able to find so much happiness in hockey this season
Seconded!
I’m trying to pick a Pens favorite, but I can’t decide. Damn!
May I suggest Sid? He seems like a bad choice becuase he’s too obvious, but give him a fair shake, you might be surprised. :D
That’s so great that your family was able to find so much happiness in hockey this season — the getting to the WCF is just gravy in the face of something like that!
Indeed! Yay, hockey, for making Myra feel better!
Seriously, I really am proud of the Stars. They fought really hard. Now I can focus on worrying whether or not they’ll resign Mittens. Woo!
Oh, the worrying about re-signing. Good times! *Runs to check whether the Devils have re-signed Pando yet*
May I suggest Sid? He seems like a bad choice becuase he’s too obvious, but give him a fair shake, you might be surprised. :D
I think I shall give them all a fair shake, especially Sid! :D Penguins, Game 1 is when you need to impress me.
Oh, the worrying about re-signing. Good times! *Runs to check whether the Devils have re-signed Pando yet*
Oh, Schnookie, I’m sorry. :/ We have something crazy like 12 UFAs this season. Nuts.
I mean, it’s one thing if it’s 105 in Arizona and bone dry, so it doesn’t feel that bad, but 100 and humid? No thank you!
You know I think 105 is pretty unbearable even when it’s bone dry. I always pretty much bought the whole, dry heat isn’t bad thing because I’d never in my life been anywhere where the heat got up to the triple digits. Then I went somewhere that hot, and my sister and I were like, “this whole dry heat thing is bullshit! Hot weather sucks no matter what.”
It’s, uh, probably best that I live in the northeast (even though NYC is thoroughly icky in the summer also).
We have something crazy like 12 UFAs this season. Nuts.
Dude, that BLOWS. We’ve pretty much got just the one that matters to me. So while this SHOULD be a really mellow off-season for Devils fans, I’m schvitzing. I hope that in a few weeks I’ll look back on this time and laugh and laugh. :D
Then I went somewhere that hot, and my sister and I were like, “this whole dry heat thing is bullshit! Hot weather sucks no matter what.”
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s true — 110 degrees is just fucking insufferably hot, whether it’s dry or humid. That said, we used to visit Arizona every summer when we were kids, and it was often a respite to go where it was 110 and dry to get away from the NJ “97 and humid” thing in August. It was just a nice difference, breaking up the monotony of sticky, heavy summer heat, I guess. Living there year-round, though, I can say that it got very tired very fast. :D
It was just a nice difference, breaking up the monotony of sticky, heavy summer heat, I guess.
I can definitely understand that. I didn’t have much experience with the 90s and humid thing either until I started living in New York fulltime and it certainly is miserable as well.
I didn’t have much experience with the 90s and humid thing either until I started living in New York fulltime
Yeah, I keep hearing about how idyllic and not-that-insufferably-hot the Buffalo-area summers are… I have to remind myself that not everyone in the East is in the Philly region of murderously swampy summers! :D
Oh, and I am TOTALLY pommerdoodling right now — I just got an email from my Farm, and my first pick-up of lettuce and pick-your-own strawberries is THIS COMING MONDAY! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
my first pick-up of lettuce and pick-your-own strawberries is THIS COMING MONDAY! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Wooo! That’s so exciting! I got my green beans planted, so I’m excited! :D
EEEEEEEEE!!!!!! Yay green beans! I’m quite jealous of the green beans, actually. We’ve shied away from beans for a variety of kind of dippy reasons, not least that I get TONS of beans from our farm and Pookie doesn’t eat them, but the plants are SO beautiful, and I think they’d be a lot of fun to grow. I can’t wait to see how yours turn out!
Still room on the Pens bandwagon? I’m so bandwagony, I wore my Crosby jersey to school today (and boy did I pay for it. Eff you Rangers fans)
On the whole heat thing, I think I agree with Meg. I’ve never been in a place where it was triple digit temps and dry, but I know it’s freaking unbearable when it is humid, so I imagine it must be pretty awful when it isn’t too.
Still room on the Pens bandwagon?
I think there’s plenty of room, Mags!
I’m really sorry about the Stars btw. There is always next season!
I’m really sorry about the Stars btw. There is always next season!
I have good feelings for next season! I feel pretty positive about this season, too. It would’ve been nice to go all the way to the SCF, but it’s a lot further than we got last year…that’s for sure.
Howdy, IPB.
Stars fans: keep your chin up. Your team had a hell of a run. Next season is just around the corner.
And there’s no hockey until Saturday? Seriously?!
Hey Amy! And yeah… SATURDAY. Maybe we’ll be reduced to diarizing National Treasure between now and then. :P
I feel pretty positive about this season, too.
Good! Excellent, even :)
Omg, Saturday? Doesn’t the NHL know I have no idea what am I going to do with all the time?!
I loved National Treasure! It warmed my history geek heart!
Maybe we’ll be reduced to diarizing National Treasure between now and then
Opening Credits: much laughter.
1:52: Pookie leaves the room saying she can’t handle Nic Cage’s toupee for one more second.
Maybe we’ll be reduced to diarizing National Treasure between now and then. :P
Two words: Bad Movie Marathon.
I think I’m gonna go full bore this week. I already watched ‘Return of the Living Dead’ last night. After the game, of course.
Sorry Dallas fans. Well….y’know…not that sorry, but you understand. On the bright side I am 100% against the Wings in the SCF!
andrew, Return of the Living Dead is awesome! I love that movie. Nothing like gratuitous Linnea Quigley scenes….
Maybe we’ll be reduced to diarizing National Treasure between now and then.
Heh. Speaking of bad movies, I have The Cutting Edge 3 to diarize.
I also loved National Treasure from a history geek perspective. I loved how the characters were just supposed to be nerds. Of course, that concept was all the movie had going for it, since the history was TOTALLY specious, and the execution of the nerdlinger-ness was… lacking. But I still loved every minute of it. We’re watching it now because Boomer hasn’t seen it, and I wanted to borrow the sequel when it comes in to the library. As I recall, we spent most of our time watching it the first time around (side note: we were reduced to watching it thanks to there being a lockout. See what no hockey does to me???) taking increasingly lazy jabs at the quality of Nic Cage’s toupee.
Speaking of bad movies, I have The Cutting Edge 3 to diarize.
Whoa. That is SO intense.
Return of the Living Dead is awesome! I love that movie. Nothing like gratuitous Linnea Quigley scenes…
It is so awesome. One of my absolute favorites.
Linnea Quigley…mmmm…hottest.zombie.evar. (oxymoron?)
Heh. Speaking of bad movies, I have The Cutting Edge 3 to diarize.
Having never seen it (or part 2 for that matter), I can say that I am very much looking forward to your diarized version, Amy!
Whoa. That is SO intense.
I watched the first segment, and was like “this…is crap. Must share it with the world.”
I watched the first segment, and was like “this…is crap. Must share it with the world.”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I really can’t WAIT to read it!!!
Schnookie, I am so excited to see the sequel. Really, Nic Cage should be mocked, as it’s easy to do. If you think his hair is bad there, you should see him in Next or in these posters for this new movie he’s got coming out. It’s awful.
I know exactly how I’m gping to fill my time between now and the first SCF game – watching movies. I probably have six or seven to plow through right now.
I watched the first segment, and was like “this…is crap. Must share it with the world.”
Amy, I am on tenterhooks to read this!
I watched the first segment, and was like “this…is crap. Must share it with the world.”
*gigglesnort*
I don’t really have any movies to watch, so suspect I’m going to spend a lot of time baking stuff or making stuff, and trying to talk Tom into buying Maarten a waffle iron that makes heart shaped waffles for his birthday (not so much because Maarten wants a waffle iron that makes heart shaped waffles, but because I do)
Amy, I am on tenterhooks to read this!
I’ve tentatively scheduled it for Friday, since that’s the only time I can get near the DVR without my mother complaining about missing American Idol / Dancing With the Stars / Greys Anatomy / Who Knows What.
Damn! So I have to wait until Saturday for hockey, and Friday for “Cutting Edge 3″? Life is so hard!
I’ve tentatively scheduled it for Friday
FRIDAY?! I’ll be dead by then. I kid. I’m glad you’re doing it at all :)
I am gonna catch H-E- Double Hockey Sticks for this from the IPB faithful, but I am pulling for the Wings in the Finals. I just can’t go for the Pens after spending so many years wearing the horns and the tail over my heart.
Plus, Raffi is so cute as a Red Wing. Like a living Hummel figure.
Morgan, I’m also cheering for the Wings. I liked the Pens plenty last year, but they’re not doing anything for me this year. Sure, there are a few reasons I won’t mind if they win, but my heart’s siding with the Wings in this series.
And Raffie TOTALLY looks like a Hummel figure! I’ve also totally divorced him from the Devils Raffie, so whenever they talk about him on the TV, we’re all like, “Is he related to that Rafalski we used to have?”
Morgan, I know you totally don’t need my opinion, but I’m going to give it to you anyway. Good for you. I think if the Red Wings were playing anyone else, I would get square behind them and cheer on Raffi and the rest of them like my life depended on it.
Morgan, you cheer for who you cheer. I get that not everyone has the pure, unadulterated hate for the Wings like I do. The Wings are my Rangers, man.
Oh man, the Wings/Stars rerun is on now, but I have to go to practice. Eff this timing!
Morgan, I’m with you on the Wings front. And the Raffie=Hummel front. He’s looking more and more Hummel-y every day. He’s like a walking QVC Daily Special. I will be very glad to see Sid and Malkin with the Stanley Cup, but I’m not really into any of the rest of the team. The Wings, on the other hand, are a team I haven’t paid any attention to since they had the Russian 5. They’re like a whole new team to me and that’s refreshing this time of year.
Unrelated aside: Boomer just emailed to say that the kitchen guys are at our house right now putting in the last three cabinet fronts we were missing! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! OUR KITCHEN MIGHT BE DONE TODAY!
OUR KITCHEN MIGHT BE DONE TODAY!
!!!!!
Boomer just emailed to say that the kitchen guys are at our house right now putting in the last three cabinet fronts we were missing! I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! OUR KITCHEN MIGHT BE DONE TODAY!
What?! WHAT? It’s only been what…over a year? And they finally got those cabinet fronts done? Hooray, that’s so exciting for you!
I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! OUR KITCHEN MIGHT BE DONE TODAY!
Yay!
The Kitchen is done is the real life equivalent of winning the four overtime game! Congrats Ookies!
And thanks to everyone for the lack of H-E- hockey sticks squared on the Wings thing.
1:52: Pookie leaves the room saying she can’t handle Nic Cage’s toupee for one more second.
Haha! I had the same reaction :05 into the trailer.
His toupee is awful, and his fake teeth are WORSE.
He was genius in Raising Arizona, and I haven’t liked him anything else.
It’s been since November 2005! Such a quick process, the IPB Manor kitchen remodel. :D
Oh, Pookie, if you’re around, I don’t know why this just jogged my memory but it did: I’m so excited that you’re working on MFB By The Sea! I saw that online, totally didn’t associate it with MFB or your MFB post, and thought, “Wow, if I can be not sucky at this whole counted cross stitch thing, I want to do that thingy!”
The Kitchen is done is the real life equivalent of winning the four overtime game!
Totally! I’m not getting excited until I see it with my own eyes, though. I’ve been disappointed by “the kitchen’s done!” lies before! :D
And thanks to everyone for the lack of H-E- hockey sticks squared on the Wings thing.
I just read your post about pulling for the Wings. If you were over on my blog, I might freak out, but since y’all are all naive EC-ers, I’ll let it slide. :P
GO PENS!
He was genius in Raising Arizona, and I haven’t liked him anything else.
Not even Honeymoon In Vegas? My irrational love for Honeymoon in Vegas knows no bounds. (I tried to abbreviate that to HIV, then realized…that looked a little odd.)
The Kitchen is done is the real life equivalent of winning the four overtime game!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You are so right, Morgan!
I had the same reaction :05 into the trailer.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s absolutely amazing to me that there isn’t someone in Hollywood who can pull Nic aside and tell him how awful his hair (and teeth) look. How does he not see this?
I’ve been disappointed by “the kitchen’s done!” lies before! :D
Don’t fall for it! (Except, WOO!!)
I’m so excited that you’re working on MFB By The Sea!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Yeah, when it’s advertized online without it’s proper name (hee!) it’s hard to put two and two together! It’s a totally fun project, though! I just started the second square this weekend. They’re actually relatively easy projects despite being so large. They have a lot of big color blocks and each section is like it’s own little piece.
The best part, though, by far, is calling it “MFB By The Sea”. I’m going to replace whatever text is on it with that title!
How does he not see this?
Because he’s an egotistical jerkface? Seriously, I love bad Nic Cage movies, but there are some screws loose in the man’s head. He seems to have really gone batshit crazy in the past couple of years, when he married the sushi waitress, started showing up to every premiere in leather and decided to his face needed to look more like Skeletor’s.
For the love of all that’s pure, the man named his son Kal-El. As in Superman’s Krypton name. WTF?
The best part, though, by far, is calling it “MFB By The Sea”.
It’s true. I crack up every time I get to say “MFB By The Sea”.
For the love of all that’s pure, the man named his son Kal-El. As in Superman’s Krypton name. WTF?
He’s just following the trend of wacky celebrity baby names.
He was genius in Raising Arizona, and I haven’t liked him anything else.
Honeymoon in Vegas for sure. And Moonstruck. Can’t forget Moonsrtuck!
Hey Patty! I saw you came by the thread last night after I wasn’t around. Sorry about your Stars. Bummer.
The best part, though, by far, is calling it “MFB By The Sea”. I’m going to replace whatever text is on it with that title!
That is so awesome! I love the MFB series. Do they just have those two in the series, or do they have more?
I personally feel that “MFB at Christmas” would be a great one! :D
I love the MFB series. Do they just have those two in the series, or do they have more?
There is a third one, but I seem to recall Pookie opted not to work it because it was basically exactly the same as MFB. I think it was called “A MFB Repetition”. I think “A Very MFB Noel” would be SO INCREDIBLE. The designers need to get on that. :D
I agree, by the way, that “Moonstruck” is another good Nic Cage movie.
Honeymoon in Vegas for sure. And Moonstruck. Can’t forget Moonsrtuck!
He won his Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas but I can’t stand LLV. And I liked Moonstruck. But then again, I love bad Nic Cage movies, so I have no room to talk.
Wait, I thought Kiss of Death was terrible. :p
There’s one more in the series, Caitlin. It’s called “The Village of [MFB]“. Here’s a picture of some random stanger’s finished piece:
LINK
The first time I saw the chart I was like, “Meh, too cutesy/country.” But then every time I’ve seen it since I’ve been like, “Waaait… it’s actually kind of fun looking…” And this person’s finished project is stunning. So… food for thought for me when I finish MFB By The Sea!
Dude! MFB Village is AWESOME! Why did we not like it when the design first came out? Is that picture just a seriously kick-ass linen choice? Were all the models on something crappy? Because I don’t know why you’re not planning on making that NEXT, Pookie.
MFB Village is awesome. I don’t know what my problem was the first time around! And yes, that picture features some seriously kick-ass linen and a very talented stitcher! I think I might have to consider making it next. The little graveyard is adorable.
As for “An MFB Noel” I’m all over that! Imagine the little houses with weaths on them! And snowy trees! Snowmen and cardinals everywhere!
MFB Village is kickin’ rad! I love the burial ground square at the end. So morbidly delicious!
The first time I saw the chart I was like, “Meh, too cutesy/country.”
Do you guys have problems with this too? 85% of needlework is too “cutesy” or flowery for me.
I’m odd. That’s why I like all the sites y’all referred me to, because they have older, more classic stuff! :D

When we were brainstorming of places to suggest you look, Boomer kept piping up with designers that do really cutesy stuff. I was like, “Yeah, I don’t think that’s Caitlin’s style…” Do you remember that Volkswagen commercial where the gimmick was everyone had a “Fast” and the car would make your “Fast” happy? Boomer has an “Ugly”. We like to joke when she shows off new charts she’s picked that “her Ugly went shopping for her”. She was suggesting lots of sites her Ugly loves. :D (For the most part she does stunning, stunning stuff. But every now and then… :D)
Do you guys have problems with this too? 85% of needlework is too “cutesy” or flowery for me.
TOTALLY. For a very long time I opted for knitting/crocheting over needlework because so much of the stuff I could find for cross stitch was all, like, fairies and dragons or grandmotherly flowery stuff. (Mind you, I’ve seen some of that stuff worked by AMAZING needlecrafters, and it can be really good, but it’s just not my aesthetic… [/diplomatic]) Then we moved near the sampler-crazy shop in Mesa, and discovered the wide, wide world of reproduction samplers, and other designs drawing on those traditions. I do like some more “country-ish” designers, too, but for the most part, we’re all about the samplers.
Pookie actually recently made a birth sampler for our friends’ daughter, and we took it to a local framer in the hopes that he’d have it finished faster than our super-slow framer in AZ. It was a pretty contemporary design with a country-ish aesthetic, but she’d worked it on a hand-dyed linen. The guy ended up taking FOREVER, after promising it would be done in a couple of weeks, so we finally called to get the piece back. He said the delay was because the piece was so fragile and old that it was difficult for them to stretch it. We were like, “WTF? There’s even a DATE on it. A birth date in 2008. WHAT IN THE HELL?” Oh, the travails of using reproduction sampler materials!
Boomer kept piping up with designers that do really cutesy stuff.
Aww, Boomer!
For the most part she does stunning, stunning stuff. But every now and then… :D
I had a family member that was remarkably crafty with a needle and thread, but all I remember her really doing is about 8,000 cat pillows.
I’m just picky about my aesthetics, and probably worse off for it. :D
I do like some more “country-ish” designers, too, but for the most part, we’re all about the samplers.
I like the samplers. And, given the design, I can get behind some of the bellpulls, too.
He said the delay was because the piece was so fragile and old that it was difficult for them to stretch it.
What in the hell? Is the man illiterate? Can he not read?
I think this is why my mother doesn’t have someone professionally finish her quilts. I think the terror of letting someone potentially lose/screw up/take forever on a piece is what drives her bananas.
I think the terror of letting someone potentially lose/screw up/take forever on a piece is what drives her bananas.
Yeah, that is tough. The framer we use in AZ is affiliated with the shop we love so well, so we trust her implicitly. She’s just REALLY slow. So it’s always a surprise when they send us a box with, like, six pieces all finished up in them, because we’ll have forgotten all about them. We just got a box last week and it was like, “Wait, I stitched that?”
I don’t think I could frame my own stuff, though. KtG sometimes does her own little pieces, and it always looks a bit… amateurish. [/diplomatic] :P
I forgot about Moonstruck. I liked Cage in that, I guess. (Although the star of that movie was Olympia Dukakis’ tiled kitchen.)

If you’re having to hand-stretch linen over a frame, I would imagine so. I’d definitely send it off to be done!

:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I started a stamped cross-stitch lap quilt for my mother that is only going to take approximately ten years and eight days, and I can tell by the time I finish and back it, my mother will have forgotten that I ever got it.

That was how I was able to “surprise” Boomer with her Christmas stocking. She’d totally forgotten all about it by the time I finished it. :D

Now that the summer is stretching out in front of me, I’m kind of getting into your stitching talk. I know I’ll never sit down and do a cross-stitch again, just because I just can’t stick to it. But who knows. Maybe I’ll start one, at least.
The last kit I bought was a pretty fancy one that was a picture of a cottage in the evening. I was in Houston visiting my parents and my friend was with me, so we went with my Mom to the Hobby Lobby and had a great time. We each picked out a pattern and went home to Mom’s and sat around talking and pulling out all our thread and stuff. Then my friend and I drove back home and I never picked it up again.
Back in the day I did a ton of cutesy ones.
I know I’ll never sit down and do a cross-stitch again, just because I just can’t stick to it.
The more I do it, the more I think it’s about the process about stitching rather than finishing anything. It’s nice to have something to do while watching TV or movies, you know?
Patty, I am the QUEEN of spending a fun day pulling charts, picking threads, selecting linens, buying all the supplies, then getting home, setting everything up for the stitching… and then not doing anything. The opening up a new kit and separating all the threads is the BEST PART.
After many years of grappling with my lameness (I never finish ANYTHING), it has finally been drilled into my head that it’s a hobby. The process is supposed to be fun. As long as I’m enjoying it, and I’m not, like spending my mortgage money on it, then who cares if I never finish anything? :D
It’s nice to have something to do while watching TV or movies, you know?
Exactly! It keeps my hands busy, and I feel more productive making something while I’m watching TV or something like that. I got roped into watching “Verminators” last night on Discovery and got a lot of stitching work done!
She’d totally forgotten all about it by the time I finished it. :D
I’m struggling to find a Christmas project for my mother that I can actually handle. She always wants crafty stuff for the house, but never gets around to it/buys it for the holidays. Heh.
The trick to Christmas stuff is that you have to be working on it now to have it done in time for the Holidays. I have a hard time with that, because I’m still working on the stuff I started in January when I wanted more Springtime pieces!
The trick to Christmas stuff is that you have to be working on it now to have it done in time for the Holidays.
Exactly! …Which is why I’m putting off the search until Christmas, when everything comes out, and making it for next year, I guess.
Goddamned Christmas.
Pookie was right — the kitchen celebrations were premature. They still have the wrong cabinet front for one of the drawers. But now we’re 99.75% done!
Goddamned Christmas.
Heh. I’m trying to think of where to steer you for good Christmas designs, because actually a lot of designers are putting them out in the next couple of months, just because they’re no good to anyone if they come out in December…

True, true, true.
Hmm. I love IPB! It’s my one stop shop for everything, man. ;)
But now we’re 99.75% done!
Yay! You’re only .25% away from being complete! Huzzah!
It’s my one stop shop for everything, man. ;)
I’m so glad that there’s someone here who wants to hear about all this stuff! :D
I’m so glad that there’s someone here who wants to hear about all this stuff! :D
Well, I’m glad that you guys talk about this with me, or I’d be hopelessly lost!
Why in the world is it only 2:30?
Why in the world is it only 2:30?
And why do I have to spend the last 30 minutes of my day working in the children’s section?! Little kids SCARE me!
Why in the world is it only 2:30?
This day is totally dragging.
And why do I have to spend the last 30 minutes of my day working in the children’s section?! Little kids SCARE me!
Oh my god. I am so sorry, Pookie. So sorry. Children are the DEVIL. I’m convinced I was never a child.
And why do I have to spend the last 30 minutes of my day working in the children’s section?!
To remind you of the incredible awesomeness of children’s books? I’ve spent way too much time geeking out over kids books in putting together a gift for my cousin’s baby shower.
Wow, making this afternoon even worse, my internet is going so slowly I thought for a moment that I’d never see IPB again!
Pookie was right — the kitchen celebrations were premature.
I told you not to fall for it! :P
I should always listen to you, Patty! You’re so much wiser than I am! (Although I’m impressed they managed to remember the 12 inches of tiny crown molding detail that was missing. I figured that would be the piece we were still looking for at this time next year, not the huge drawer front under the microwave…)
Schnookie, here’s hoping they finish your kitchen before 2010! Sheesh!
HAHA! Thanks, Caitlin! I’m not going to wait for that while hanging from a rope ’round my neck. :P
Ookies, you may need to put your Gregbunny ears on again. You’re linked in his Yahoo blog in a post about winning a Parise of your very own.
Oh, my Gregbunny ears are FIRMLY in place. :D
I just saw that, Amy! Pommerdoodling! Although I am a little sad that Zach won’t be coming over to do a little cleaning. I wonder if that means Boxworthy also won’t be coming over…
Ooh! A Greg W. link! Yahoo’s NHL section is the hockey news of record, if you ask me. And Greg’s blog is great! Congratulations!!!
Yahoo’s NHL section is the hockey news of record
Oh, you’re just being modest, Ms. NYT blogger. :D
I’m SO over the NYT blog. I told all my friends about how I was being published in the New York Times before I came to the horrifying realization that it’s a frickin’ Rangers blog!
I’ve felt a little dirty ever since! :D
I have to say that your experience with the NYT helped me GREATLY in my efforts to get over being disappointed that we were snubbed. :D
alix, I saw your cousin on On the Fly on the NHL Network last night!
This is going WAY back, stupid work grumble grumble, but YAY! That’s so cool, Patty! Was it an interview? Or just him skating?
If you’re still around, alix, apparently the On the Fly show has a little blurb at the end of each night’s episode where they spotlight a draft prospect. That night was James Wright. I hesitate to say what they said about him because I might get him mixed up with somebody else. They were complimentary, though. He talked a little about growing up playing hockey and stuff. Is he an offensive defenseman?
Awww. That’s cute! He learned to skate on a rink in his backyard. Nope. He’s a center.
