This is the 14th in our summer series where we are drawing hockey cards at random from a box and then writing about them.
There is a scant handful of Maple Leafs that we can stomach — namely, that Stajan guy and that Newberry guy, because we once misheard the play-by-play on CBC and thought they were talking about a player named Blueberry Stajan. Who wouldn’t cheer for Blueberry Stajan? Anyway, Alex Steen is borderline likable to us, but for the same hockey-centric sort of reason we like Blueberry. You see, Gentle Reader, there was a marvelous interview with Travis this past season that went a bit like this:
Interviewer: You grew up in Winnipeg, a fan of the Jets.
Travis: Yeah.
Interviewer: Are you excited tonight to be playing the Leafs, so you can talk to Alex Steen and tell him how much of a fan of his father’s you were when you were growing up?
Travis: [Thinking] The fuck? [Aloud] I played youth hockey with Alex. I used to talk to him all the time when we were growing up.
Interviewer: But have you talked to him recently?
Travis: Uhhh… no. No I haven’t.
Interviewer: So you must be really excited to be playing the Leafs tonight, so you can tell Alex how much his dad meant to you.
Travis: Look, I’m not a very smart guy, but I’m starting to think I’m not as dumb as you are…

Hahahaha!!! Awww Travis! Please don’t suck this year, so I can put you back on my fantasy roster. What a dense interviewer.
wait. what?
I’m still not sure I believe Travis is over six feet tall.
My head says Cangelosi gives this interview, but my heart pins it on Sherry Ross.
alix, Travis is SO excited to be Captain Acorns for your team next year. He promises he’ll be so much better! :D
Kristin, :^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Heather, believe it! You clearly need to watch more Devils games — he towers over every other guy on the team!
And I think it was Cangelosi, but don’t quote me on that.
OH.
MY.
GOD.
We just watched an episode of Semi-Homemade in which Sandra made “beignets” by rolling Pillsbury biscuit dough into balls and deep-frying them. I swear. I’m just… stunned.

My mom used to deep-fry canned biscuit dough and sprinkle them with powdered sugar. But we pretty much just called them deep-fried biscuits or sometimes donuts. Little did we know we could have become a cooking show mega star if we had only called them “beignets”. :P
Side note: My mom deep-fried everything! Could be why both she and my dad had bypass surgeries when they were in their sixties. Ya think?

Ummmmm. Ewwwww? My arteries hurt just thinking about those. She could have just made beaver tails and been Yason’s soul mate.
Could be why both she and my dad had bypass surgeries when they were in their sixties. Ya think?
No way! It’s just coincidence. :D (Was the fried biscuit dough okay? We figured it was probably really gooey on the inside. And flavored like Pillsbury biscuits. Heh.
alix, Sandra better keep her skanky mitts off Yayson!

This has been close to 30 years ago, so I’m having to “think back a ways” but I don’t remember them being gooey or soggy. She would use a donut cutter to cut out the center and fry them separate. And she always said to fry at really high heat to keep things from soaking up the oil. They still tasted like like biscuit dough but deepfry anything and sprinkle powder sugar on it and it tasted pretty good! You have to remember my mom used the holy trinity of white trash cooking: Velveeta, Miracle Whip and Crisco. :)
(I strongly suspect that Sandra’s Semi-homemade is really White Trash cooking repackaged.)
I think the “cutting the center out” part of your mom’s fried biscuits is kind of key. Sandra rolled the biscuits into tight, fat balls. And fried them at a relatively low heat. NASTY!
the holy trinity of white trash cooking: Velveeta, Miracle Whip and Crisco.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
We grew up with plenty of Velveeta, but not the other two. I guess that means we were just raised by parents who grew up in the Midwest in the ’50s, rather than white trash. :P
The “parents who grew up in the Midwest in the ’50s” holy trinity was mayonnaise, Cream of Mushroom soup, and Ritz crackers.
alix, Sandra better keep her skanky mitts off Yayson!
Yason wouldn’t even look at her twice.
People keep telling me we’re front runners for Hossa. This scares me. I don’t want to shackeled with his gigantor of a contract.
The “parents who grew up in the Midwest in the ’50s” holy trinity was mayonnaise, Cream of Mushroom soup, and Ritz crackers.
Wow. That would have been way to fancy for us! :D
Mom always used really really high heat and I must say nothing she made ever tasted greasy. Her fried chicken was the absolute best. Never had anything to come close.
I can’t believe Sandra Lee’s three shot, splash of cream, half a banana cocktail.
One of the most read posts in Sabreland is about Soupy’s current freakout over UFAdom. Its really quite entertaining.
Hee. Is that the freak out with his quote talking about it not being ALL about the money?
Some Canucks fan suggested to me that Gillis looooooves Soupy yesterday and I almost puked in my mouth. Would we have use for a talented puck moving defenceman? Yes. Would Soupy drive Lui insane? Yes. Does Vancouver have enough jail bait blondes for Soupy? Probably yes. Do we want to pay him more than Lidstrom? Hell no.
alix, that’s part of it. The Nosy Nellie in me really wants to know what “family issue” is drawing him back to the Northeast. I hope its nothing bad for Soupy’s family, but at the same time, why is he publicizing it if he doesn’t want to talk about it?
And the Lightning traded for Malone and Robert’s UFA rights? What the heck?
I can’t believe Sandra Lee’s three shot, splash of cream, half a banana cocktail.
I KNOW! That was ASTONISHING. That was some SERIOUS rocket fuel. And the banana garnish was… unattractive. Heh.
I can’t believe Soupy’s freaking out about free agency! Hee hee!
And the Lightning traded for Malone and Robert’s UFA rights? What the heck?
The hell?
What are the Lightning doing?!
Even crazier? We’re watching more MacGyver (KtG is here on vacation so we’re doing the traditional family “sit and stitch”) and guess what? We’ve seen two genuinely good episodes in a row! INSANITY!
What are the Lightning doing?!
They’re doing this whole “whackadoo franchise” way too early! At least wait until half way summer, so we have something to do!
Oh yeah. I forgot about that family thing. Interesting…
Oh Lightning. Please stop acting crazy. Malone I could kind of see…but Roberts? That’s a little nutso. He’s 42 and he made over 2 million last season.
I’m so glad MacGyver is quitting with the suck for y’all!
I just finished watching about 5 episodes of Weeds in a row. (What else would I be watching? Heh.) It’s a pretty great show.
I’ll say one thing the for the Lightning’s new management, they are not sitting around tweedling their thumbs. I hope it turns out well, for our misplaced Stars sakes.
We are heading over to my sister’s to celebrate with grilled pork chops! Have fun with MacGyver and hey to KtG!
Mmmmm grilled pork…
alix, you’re so predictable, Little Miss Marijuana Party! :D
I just finished watching about 5 episodes of Weeds in a row. (What else would I be watching? Heh.)
You are incorrigible, alix ;P
I’m going to go nurse my wounds after 3 days of hockey tourney (our team for the win!). Just wanted to check in and say hi. Hi KtG! Glad to see you made it out of Holland alive! See y’all Monday :)
HA! alix, I’m so surprised to hear you like Weeds! :P
I don’t get why the Lightning can’t wait three days like everyone else to try to sign Malone and Roberts. I mean, are the next 72 hours really going to make THAT big a difference?
Hi Mags! Glad to hear your team won!
I hope it turns out well, for our misplaced Stars sakes.
It will turn out well. It will! In 2-3 years they are going to be totally sane and totally rad.
Have fun celebrating, Myra!
Yay for your team, Mags!
Yeah, I really don’t understand the whole trading rights thing. The dudes are still going to go for the best offer, and if it’s not yours then you also lose out on a draft pick if I’m not mistaken.
The trading rights thing for Malone makes even less sense when you consider that the Blue Jackets were allegedly thisclose to signing him, too. Why give up a pick when you can get the guy for nothing in three days? Gah! People are so stupid! (I’ll stand by my thinking they’re stupid even if they sign him. I mean, if he wanted to go there, he’d go there without them giving up a pick.)
I totally agree, Schnookie.
We spoke too soon about MacGyver, by the way. We’re watching the worst “flashback” clip-show right now. :P
I’ve always been told I would love Weeds, but I tend to go towards the Ookies rule of “Things we’ve been told we’d love” when I hear that.
I think the Malone/Roberts thing is more of a PR move, if they’re going to sign them anyway, this gives the whole “I’m like, serious about this” vibe for Koules and Barrie.
I feel for Jay Feaster, however.
Also, I think Koules and Barrie mentioned this years Flyers team being an example to them like 450,000 times during their introductory speech. Looks as if they’ve swiped the blueprint.
Where is everybody?
Hey Patty, I’ve been lurking to see if anyone showed up! :)
So, how was the Roadshow!?!?!
It was pretty fun! My legs and back are still stiff from standing around on the concrete convention center floor, but it was fun.
How long did you have to wait in line? Did you learn anything interesting about your stuff? Most importantly, did you get to see the Keno twins!? ;)
I saw the Keno twins from afar! I didn’t learn anything very interesting. My stuff wasn’t valuable at all. My mom had a cameo of my grandmother’s that was about $200, but not surprising. She was pretty disappointed that her Indian pottery bowl wasn’t worth more than about $100.
Darn, no six figures, huh.
Ok, here’s the really big question. Was it worth it for the experience?
Hidely-hodely! We’ve been decompressing after KtG leaving, and watching Olympic swimming trials. Mmmmmmm… Olympic swimming trials. Of course, they just swam about three races in the one-hour presentation. Thanks for nothing, NBC.
Patty, I am SO EXCITED that you went to Antiques Roadshow, but SO BUMMED that those LOSERS didn’t think your priceless valuables weren’t worth much.
Oh man, I missed the swimming trials! :( And Hub & Kid are gone so I could have drooled all I wanted. Bummer.
Hope ya’ll had a great visit with KtG. My sister and I are so releaved to still only be 20 minutes from each other!
It WAS worth it, Myra! I basically just brought what I brought just so I had something in my hands. So I wasn’t too disappointed.
We became BFFs with the couple in front of us in line, and looked at everybody else’s stuff and just generally had fun.
Our ticket was for the 5pm slot so we weren’t allowed to get there more than 30 minutes early. It was their way of managing the day and it worked pretty well. We only had to stand in line for about 2 hours, then we had to move around and go through 2 other lines each. By the time we were up at the appraisers’ desks, there weren’t many left to go.
Of course, they just swam about three races in the one-hour presentation. Thanks for nothing, NBC.
That was just a taste. A teaser.
NBC knows which side their bread’s buttered on.
There’s more swimming on USA tomorrow night, and then more on NBC on Friday!
See? If it had been all the swimming, you probably wouldn’t even watch NBC on Friday!
There’s more swimming on USA tomorrow night, and then more on NBC on Friday!
Thanks for the head’s up!
It was their way of managing the day and it worked pretty well.
Cool, sounds like they know how to get things done. But of course, they’ve been doing this for over ten years, so I guess they should!
Patty, I’m glad you had a good time, but I’m sorry you didn’t have some priceless antique (at least, that you brought with you then!).
I still think those Antiques Roadshow people proved how IGNORANT they are! How could they not know that Patty’s stuff is priceless?
It’s so true. Maybe they were tired. Their eyes couldn’t focus so they thought it was just cheap 1900 German transferware instead of a priceless miniature pitcher presented by the German king to the 8-year-old daughter of the Russian czar.
Cool, sounds like they know how to get things done.
True. Sounds like it’s the result of a lot of trial and error. They went from a few stragglers to lines that snaked around the block and eventually adjusted.
If they ever come to a town near where you’re going to be, you should put in for tickets. It was fun.
I’ll let you know when the episode airs. Probably January. A girl in front of us in the jewelry line was asked to be on TV, but she still hadn’t been at a table when we left. And I was right behind a table that was being filmed when I was at the Porcelain table so we might get a glimpse of my ass on TV.
I can’t wait to see your ass on TV!!! It’ll be like seeing Katebits winking at Crunchy!
Well, not exactly. :P
I’ll let you know when the episode airs.
Definitely, although we are such geeks, we hardly ever miss a show. Unless it’s on at the same time as a Stars game! :P
What, your ass wasn’t winking?
