Midway through the season Ryan Miller answered the burning question, “If you were an ice cream, what ice cream would you be?” His answer? Breakaway Berrier, a chocolate ice cream laced with raspberry and fudge swirls. All reviews from our Buffalo contacts were “two-thumbs up!”, “I can’t stop eating it!”, and “it’s 1:30 am on a work night; is that too late to eat some Breakaway Berrier?” We got to thinking that Buffalo shouldn’t be the only city that gets to experience Crunchy in ice-cream form. So when it came to pass that we had almost two pints of mixed berries and nothing to do with them, we saw only one course of action: create an ice cream worthy of IPB.
This beauty of a sundae features homemade chocolate ice cream and swirls of farm-share blackberries and home-grown raspberries. Topped with a Grand Marnier chocolate sauce, chantilly creme*, and a medley of berries/maraschino cherries, it was as close as we could get to the original. The taste-test proved the desert was delightful — the ice cream had a rich cocoa-y taste and the berries brightened the flavor up nicely — but we will admit, it made us a little nervous. We mean, “breakaway”? As Devils fans, can we partake of a foodstuff named for something that we haven’t seen on the ice in years (if ever)? We needed a better name, and fast.

*Full disclosure: By “chantilly cream” we actually mean “Redi-wip”. That’s what Crunchy would have wanted.
