Midway through the season Ryan Miller answered the burning question, “If you were an ice cream, what ice cream would you be?” His answer? Breakaway Berrier, a chocolate ice cream laced with raspberry and fudge swirls. All reviews from our Buffalo contacts were “two-thumbs up!”, “I can’t stop eating it!”, and “it’s 1:30 am on a work night; is that too late to eat some Breakaway Berrier?” We got to thinking that Buffalo shouldn’t be the only city that gets to experience Crunchy in ice-cream form. So when it came to pass that we had almost two pints of mixed berries and nothing to do with them, we saw only one course of action: create an ice cream worthy of IPB.
This beauty of a sundae features homemade chocolate ice cream and swirls of farm-share blackberries and home-grown raspberries. Topped with a Grand Marnier chocolate sauce, chantilly creme*, and a medley of berries/maraschino cherries, it was as close as we could get to the original. The taste-test proved the desert was delightful — the ice cream had a rich cocoa-y taste and the berries brightened the flavor up nicely — but we will admit, it made us a little nervous. We mean, “breakaway”? As Devils fans, can we partake of a foodstuff named for something that we haven’t seen on the ice in years (if ever)? We needed a better name, and fast.

*Full disclosure: By “chantilly cream” we actually mean “Redi-wip”. That’s what Crunchy would have wanted.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Crunchy does NOT approve of that sundae, but I certainly do. I want some whip cream, stat.
Whip cream or chantilly cream? I’m sure Crunchy would approve of this if we gave him a bowl. The intoxicating smell of Redi-whip would lure him in. It wouldn’t be until the spoon was rattling in his empty bowl that he would howl, “You ticked me! You tricked me! I’m going to get FAT!”
That sundae looks delicious and so much better than the Klondike bars in my freezer.
By “chantilly cream” we actually mean “Redi-wip”. That’s what Crunchy would have wanted.
Only you know Crunchy would’ve added an extract to it to take away the packaged taste.
Amy, I knew we were missing something! DAMMIT!
It wouldn’t be until the spoon was rattling in his empty bowl that he would howl, “You ticked me! You tricked me! I’m going to get FAT!”
Well, it is “Light cream”, which means you can eat entire cans of it without gaining an ounce, right? Crunchy’s so paranoid.
Only you know Crunchy would’ve added an extract to it to take away the packaged taste.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
I’m not allowed to buy Redi-whip anymore because when I have it I eat it directly out of the can every time I open the fridge until it’s gone two days later.
We could have put a teaspoon of some lemon or rum extract by using the cap, because you know, every cap ever on the face of the planet is exactly a teaspoon.
HA! That’s awesome, Katebits! I’m showing remarkable restraint in not having a bowl of Reddi-wip for dinner tonight.
Last time we made sundaes, I made homemade whipped cream, and you know what? Reddi-wip is better. It just tastes more like a sundae! (We ate the homemade stuff with a spoon. Reddi-wip keeps us from doing that by coming in a package that is not penetrable by spoons. I’m remarkably good at not eating directly from the can. :D)
I’m not allowed to buy Redi-whip anymore because when I have it I eat it directly out of the can every time I open the fridge until it’s gone two days later.
OMG, I have this same problem! I’ve taken 3 “swig’s” off the redi whip today alone. Stupid me bought the value pack at Sam’s club.
I would like to add that I could eat that Sundae for Breakfast, Lunch AND Dinner. mmmm..chocolate
Yeah, Redi Whip doesn’t last long in my home. Although I do resist eating it out of a can, I tend to just dump it in a bowl with berries and eat it that way.
That looks delicious by the way.
Chaz, a VALUE PACK of Reddi-wip? That’s BRILLIANT! :P
Meg, I think I would dump it in a bowl of berries, but then just eat the whipped cream and leave the berries for a second serving. Heh.
Anyone here watching the women’s gymnastics right now? This is craziness!
you are making me think seriously of running down to my local carvel and ordering either a large vanilla cone or going all out and getting a fudgie the whale (*not named for the hartford whalers) ice cream cake :D
don, I whole-heartedly endorse running out to get ice cream! Everyone should be eating ice cream! It’s August! (I especially recommend the Fudgie The Whale.) :D
Do it, don! Go out for ice cream! And when you’re at the Carvel, order the “Oduya Want Some Ice Cream”!
Yup, the value pack is a thing of beauty. Since I get three cans at a time I can make sure there is always one, uncontaminated can in case of guests. AND it comes in light, so I can eat the whole can for only a days worth of calories instead of a whole week. ahhh, I think I need more water…yeah…water that’s it. =P
OMG, Carvel…hmmm..I can only get Carvel at Topps. =(
I also forgot to vote for my favorite name.

I think there should be dual packaging for adults and children.
I’m watching the women’s gymnastics. Seriously, that girl is NOT 16 for another 8 years. I almost cried when she fell off the low bar. Although, at least she didn’t neuter herself cause that’s always my fear when they fly through the air towards those things. Did you see the American dude on the pommel (SP?) horse yesterday. Damn.
I think there should be dual packaging for adults and children.
HA! Definitely!
I was heartbroken for that six-year-old Chinese girl. That routine was just AWESOME — what a TOTAL bummer that she fell.
I missed this pommel dude. There was a neutering? And I missed it??? I’m CLEARLY off my game.
Wow!! Suddenly my Timmy Ho’s iced capp just ain’t cutting it.
The American on the Pommel kicked ass. It was like watching a kick ass routine on DWTS. It was so smooth and effortless. I was in awe.
Thankfully there was no neutering. I can’t handle when it happens to women and it’s double worse for men. You’d think being a women I would feel for the women, but no.
I’m convinced the Chinese team is not old enough to compete for the Olympics….it’s just not possible.
Is the gymnastics on still? I’m watching equestrian right now, but I might switch over later. I love those crazy gymnasts.
Yup, I’m watching Shawn Johnson. I think she’s the best American I’ve seen. Swimming comes on at 10 EST.
I was so sorry that 6-year-old fell. That routine KICKED ASS!
alix, is Button thinking he should be in Beijing?
alix, is Button thinking he should be in Beijing?
I think so! Hee.
I have to say, the music going on for the floor routines seems to always fit the emotional tone of what NBC is trying to get across. It’s so awesome!
Awwww! The little 18 year old Chinese guy fell off his horse! Poor button. He had done soooo well in the dressage portion too.
People are falling EVERYWHERE! The American gymnast Pookie likes best just fell off the bars. There must be something in the water. :P
For a second there, alix, I thought you meant that he’d fallen off in the dressage portion. I was like, “Wow, uh, how do you do that?”
Something in the water indeed.
HAHAHAHA!! This Italian guy’s name is Fabio!
And then Johnson did really well and landed on her ass. I was sitting here wondering if I seriously saw that. At least the goo goo dolls commerical brought me back to reality.
For a second there, alix, I thought you meant that he’d fallen off in the dressage portion. I was like, “Wow, uh, how do you do that?”
HA! That would be pretty pathetic! He was trying to jump a massive wooden box thing, and he flew right over the horse’s head. Luckily he was fine.
Wow, I’m dense…I thought 412 was Johnson…woops
The falling over is HILARIOUS!*
*Assuming no one gets hurt.
That pommel horse dude yesterday was CRAZY.
I enjoy Nastya Liukin so I was sad that she fell on her ass.
Sorry for the itty bitty Chinese girl though.
I actually don’t know anything about any of the gymnasts, so I can enjoy the falling-on-the-asses to the fullest! :P (Just kidding. I was sorry to see Liukin fall; like the Chinese girl, she was doing so well!)
Awwww! That was SO adorable! This chubby Brazilian guy was so happy he got through the cross country course he yelled “WOOOOOOOOOO!!!” and he almost let his horse run away he was praising him/her so much. Hee.
alix, that sounds so cute!
Morning, IPB! The ice cream looks delicious.
I just realized – I’ve missed EVERY single Olympic event so far except for ten minutes of the ending of the opening ceremony. Damn!
Good morning everyone!
Caitlin, that blows about the Olympics! I’m so sorry! I’d say you haven’t really missed anything, but that would be a bald-faced lie. The 4×100 relay last night was AMAZING, and you’ve missed gymnasts falling all over the place. The gymnastics has been like the last winter Olympics’ ice dancing!
They 4 x 100 was so, so awesome! I’m sure it’ll be put up on YouTube, Caitlin.
Caitlin, the 4 x 100 race is on NBCOlympics.com for your viewing enjoyment.
The only bad thing about that race last night is that I suspect the Olympics have peaked now. I mean, can it top that? :D
Actually, you can go here to see the race (that little box gets bigger [it took me a minute to figure that out]).
And that took me so long to type that I didn’t realize Amy had already pointed out that it was on the NBC website. Sorry, Amy!
Caitlin, the 4 x 100 race is on NBCOlympics.com for your viewing enjoyment.
Yay, thank you! I shall watch when I get home tonight. Excitement!
And thank you, Meg!
Surely, the Olympics can’t have peaked already! Plus, I WILL watch the damn gymnastics finals. Liukin is from Texas, so I really hope she does well.
Thanks for the ice cream Ookies! It kinda made my morning. We’ve had a tough go of it over here. My wife and I had to put the cat down Thursday night. The poor thing couldn’t even walk any more. My sister isn’t doing so great right now either. Nothing life threatening, but still enough to be worried about.
The Fraser post, the ice cream post and yes the AMAZING 4×100 relay have lifted my spirits this morning.
Danke Frauleins.
Morgan, I’m so sorry! That’s just so terribly sad about your cat. And more than that, I’m so sorry to hear that your sister isn’t well — I hope she makes a speedy, speedy recovery.
Morgan, I’m so sorry about your cat! That sucks. And I hope your sister gets well soon!
And yay ice cream! (I’m hungry now. Bugger)
Good morning IPB. I’ll bet that if Phelps wins all those medals he’s dreaming of, the Olympics won’t have peaked this morning. (that sentence could make more sense, but whatever)
Also bwuahahaha, American Women’s 4×100 relay team, SUCK ON THAT. Thought you were going to duke it out with Australia, eh? Ha! (I’m not bitter, nooooo)
(stuff in parenthesis)
Morgan, I hope your sister gets well pronto, and I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. Please pass my condolences on to Liz.
I shall watch when I get home tonight. Excitement!
Super excitement! Schnookie’s right — the Olympics have peaked. But this kinda sorta makes up for missing the 200m free from 2004. I still have a lot of hope that the gymnastics will have lots of drama, though.
Hey! No spoilers! Some of us only get to watch on tape-delay!
Hey! No spoilers! Some of us only get to watch on tape-delay!
What? Me? That wasn’t a spoiler, it happened 2 days ago!
It did? I wasn’t paying any attention, I guess. Sorry! @@@@ (I’m like, “What on earth is she talking about? It must not have happened yet!” :P)
It did? I wasn’t paying any attention, I guess. Sorry! @@@@
Is ok! I’m sorry for being confusing! And it did. It was Saturday morning, I think.
This is further proof that the Olympics are my junk food. I have no recollection at all about anything I’ve seen. A month from now I’m going to be like, “Huh? Olympics? Nah. I’ve never heard of ‘em.”
A month from now I’m going to be like, “Huh? Olympics? Nah. I’ve never heard of ‘em.”
He! I was talking to my dad about how the Athens Olympics seem, to me, to have happened so much longer ago than the Sydney Olympics. Also, I can barely remember the Opening Ceremonies for this Olympics. I know they were spectacular, but I can’t really recall any of it.
On a more random note: my sister just called me from Montreal, to say I had to look up directions for her on Google Maps because she was lost on her way to Grandmere’s house. A technology, you saved us again.
A technology, you saved us again.
I never stop marveling at what a fascinating modern age we live in. It’s just amazing!
It’s just amazing!
It’d be more amazing if phones/laptops/whatever would stop running out of batteries at exactly the wrong time :P
I thought the US women won the 4×100. Wasn’t that the first race Torres swam? So… what exactly is Team USA’s problem with that race? I don’t get it. Sorry!
I thought the US women won the 4×100. Wasn’t that the first race Torres swam? So… what exactly is Team USA’s problem with that race? I don’t get it. Sorry!
No, it’s ok, I forget that not everyone has been doing nothing but watching the Olympics all day. The US won the semi final heat, but the Dutch beat them by about a second in the finals. It was just a moment of glee for me because the US girls had been all “we’re expecting the heaviest competition to come from Australia, but do think we’ll win” before the race, and then came second to the Dutch squad (who swam a WR in April, so how they didn’t seem them coming I don’t know, but whatev)
see, not seem *headdesk*
I was talking to my dad about how the Athens Olympics seem, to me, to have happened so much longer ago than the Sydney Olympics.
I can’t believe Sydney was eight years ago. Where does the time go?
I was reading a blog post on Sabres Edge this weekend that basically said its not too early to be thinking about 2010. I’m like, can we enjoy these games first, please?
can we enjoy these games first, please?
Yes please. 2010 is not a long while away, but it is long enough, I think.
Random: Woah, seriously, they’re holding the cross country horse races on the a GOLF COURSE?! That’s kinda cool. (I hope you guys get this on tape delay, because it looks hilarious. All those people on the greens. Heee)
I was reading a blog post on Sabres Edge this weekend that basically said its not too early to be thinking about 2010. I’m like, can we enjoy these games first, please?
Yeesh! I’m certainly not ready to be looking ahead to 2010. Come on, people! These games have just started!
Seriously, they’re holding the cross country horse races on the a GOLF COURSE?! That’s kinda cool.
That’s really cool. Though I’m sure some poor groundskeeper is stroking out over the damage being done to his course by the horses.
I just spent the better part of my lunch hour watching the videos that accompany Entertainment Weekly’s list of the best Sesame Street songs. I’m in such a good mood right now!
Oooh, what was on the list of best Sesame Street songs?
I stand corrected. It wasn’t the songs, but the performances. Yo-Yo Ma played Beethoven with the Honkers. Feist sang 1234 with various Muppets. REM sang Furry Happy Monsters and an opera singer turned Carmen into a lullaby for Elmo.
The REM song is just so adorable.
Beethoven with the Honkers sounds awesome!
That’s really cool. Though I’m sure some poor groundskeeper is stroking out over the damage being done to his course by the horses.
It should take care of any fertilizer issues they may have had in the past. That golf course will have the best green in the world!
That golf course will have the best green in the world!
From the looks of it they weren’t allowed on the greens, but that apparently didn’t stop the spectators. Heh. But Amy is right, some poor grounds keeper (or rather, team thereof) is going to have a hell of a job fixing the damage that has been done.
The 4×100 relay last night was AMAZING, and you’ve missed gymnasts falling all over the place.
Just catching up here. First, Morgan so sorry about your cat, that’s so hard. I hope your sister gets better very quickly as well.
That Chinese gymnast is totally underage but really, really good. I’m rooting for Nastia (sp) because she is a Texas girl. We are abnoxious that way! :P The falling and landing out of bounds was crazy last night. I hope things go better for them.
The 4X100 was freaking amazing! I could not believe the way the anchor was just hurling himself through the water at the end there. So much fun to watch!
Big news flash! I have an interview on Wednesday with the owner of the company I interviewed with last week. The lady I interviewed with is acting like it is practically a done-deal. We’ll see but I am so excited/nervous!
That’s so exciting, Myra! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it goes well!
Yay, Myra! I hope it goes well!
Ah, IPB, I have just survived two hours with no internet! I made it out alive, thankfully. :p
Caitlin, congratulations on surviving! It’s the worst, life without the internet!
Congratulations on the job interview, Myra!! WOOOOO!!!
And Caitlin, congrats on surviving two hours without interwebs — that’s just impossibly brutal!
I just survived having to give an orientation tour and walk-through of the computer systems here to my new boss. Eeep! He seems nice, but so many of them do at first, don’t they? :P
What’s up, IPB? I see everyone is fully immersed in the Olympics, as promised. I’ve only seen a few minutes of competition…saw womens rowing and men’s trap shooting. I was rooting for the bald Russian guy with the pink glasses. Anyone see him? He looked like the stereotypical Russian mobster you’d see in a bad action flick. It was love at first sight.
Hey andrew! How was the vacation?
I’m sorry I missed that Russian dude! He sounds completely awesome. :D
He looked like the stereotypical Russian mobster you’d see in a bad action flick. It was love at first sight.
I don’t know, but I’m sure some Googling can solve that problem. What doesn’t Google solve?
And yay, I hope you had a good vacation, andrew!
Hey Schnookie! The vacation was fantastic. A week spent eating fantastic food, checking out the touristy spots, drinking, and generally kicking back in nice weather. Can’t ask for much more than that.
And yes, the Russian dude was damn cool. Alas, he didn’t win. Much to the chagrin of mobster look-alikes everywhere.
And yay, I hope you had a good vacation, andrew!
It was good! Thanks Caitlin! Was it a fun week around here?
I saw the Sabres signed Teppo. That is awesome.
Well OF COURSE it was a fun week around here! :P (Actually, it was for me. My summer is totally flying again now that it’s August. The last week of July was killer, though.)
Glad you had a great vacation, andrew!
Today has been so zany here I’m like “I just had a 2 1/2 day weekend but man, do I need a vacation!”
Glad you had a good vacation, Andrew! Congrats about the interview, Myra! Morgan, I’m so sorry about your cat and hope your sister recovers shortly.
One of my favorite (non-sports) blogs had a post about the Olympics bemoaning all the crappy bios and such that surround the actual athletics. It reminded me how glad I am to have a TiVo because I’ve so been fast forwarding through the vast majority of that stuff. Although it also got me thinking about all the things we could see instead of that. Damnit, NBC, you could so do better!
Hey andrew! I am totally jealous of your vacation, sounded great! I can’t say that I am a big follower of women’s rowing or men’s trap shooting. So, no I didn’t see that, but I bet Hub would prefer I watch that as opposed to men’s swimming. Hee.
bemoaning all the crappy bios and such that surround the actual athletics.
But I think that is part of the charm that is the Olympics! It just wouldn’t be the Olympics without bad bios. :)
bemoaning all the crappy bios and such that surround the actual athletics.
I don’t think its been as bad this time as in previous Olympics. The only bio that got beat into the ground was that of the US Flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies, but that was with good reason.
However, I could live without Mother Phelps being miked. My ears are still ringing from the open mic of her shrieking during Phelps’ race the other night.
Although it also got me thinking about all the things we could see instead of that. Damnit, NBC, you could so do better!
On the bright side, at least they put a lot of other events on their non-NBC proper channels. But yeah, the bios blow. Worse than that, though, are the in-studio interviews. I always feel squicky after the in-studio features. (All of that said, they have a lot more sports content now than I remember them having when I was a kid. I feel like it used to be a lot more bio heavy. But I might be making that up. :D)
However, I could live without Mother Phelps being miked. My ears are still ringing from the open mic of her shrieking during Phelps’ race the other night.
I am SO SICK of her. I couldn’t BELIEVE they made us watch a replay of a race just so we could hear what it sounds like when she cheers.
Hmm, I tend to agree that I could live without them (as evidenced by my skipping over them). Her take (<a href=”http://blogs.wnyc.org/culturist/2008/08/11/one-world-one-dream-one-giant-bore/”which you can read here since I don’t want to misrepresent it.) is that it does “a terrible disservice to athletics and to culture.” Mine is that it does a terrible disservice to me because it makes me want to bang my head into my coffee table. And because I’d rather they spend the time telling me what the rules of Water Polo are and what constitutes a foul (just as an example).
I am pretty resigned to the bad bios though.
On the bright side, at least they put a lot of other events on their non-NBC proper channels.
Yeah, I’m not sure I get those. Or I’m just an idiot who can’t find a broadcast guide covering them.
And because I suck at life: THE LINK
Mine is that it does a terrible disservice to me because it makes me want to bang my head into my coffee table.
I totally agree!
I think the bios haven’t been as bad. Plus they’ve not all been about US athletes, which I find kind of refreshing. But yes, that time could be better used to show more sports! And an interminable interview with President Bush could have been saved for some other time, I think!
I couldn’t BELIEVE they made us watch a replay of a race just so we could hear what it sounds like when she cheers.
Seriously. We get it. She’s proud of her son (and rightfully so). But we don’t need to have Mother Phelps Cam.
they have a lot more sports content now than I remember them having when I was a kid. I feel like it used to be a lot more bio heavy.
What we lost in bios, we more than made up for in ads.
Hey everybody!
I’m not even American, and I was bouncing up and down on my couch I was so excited after the 4X100! Man that last swimmer worked his ass off.
Curtis Sanford is letting Canucks fans design his goalie mask. Pretty cool, huh?
Hi alix! Sorry to have wandered off — I didn’t see you there!
That’s totally rad about Sanford. What a cool thing to do! I bet if Weekes let Devils fans design his mask, we’d vote on something exactly like what Marty wears. :P
Yeah, apparantly it was all his idea. Kind of awesome.
we’d vote on something exactly like what Marty wears. :P
Hee! Some guy was like, “Maybe people should design him(Sanford) a hat, considering he’ll only wear a mask for like 2 games.” Heh. Poor Sandman.
Some guy was like, “Maybe people should design him(Sanford) a hat, considering he’ll only wear a mask for like 2 games.”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: and, BURN! Heh.
Oh, we were watching part of the equestrian event this afternoon, alix. Does Button like to watch the Olympics and stuff like that, and dream big dreams? :P
Maybe people should design him(Sanford) a hat
Aw, that’s so sad! (But also funny.) You should submit a picture of Button to go on his mask.
Oh, we were watching part of the equestrian event this afternoon, alix. Does Button like to watch the Olympics and stuff like that, and dream big dreams? :P
The cross country stuff? Hee! I’m sure he does. :)
You should submit a picture of Button to go on his mask.
I totally should!
Have you ever ridden cross country? It looks so awesome and so, so, so scary.
Zach calls that vault “The Flying Boxworthy”.
Zach is kicking butt all over the place.
Have you ever ridden cross country? It looks so awesome and so, so, so scary.
I have a couple of times. But never anything as crazy as this course. Some of those jumps were nuts! My jumps would have been much smaller. But it’s really fun! I’ve jumped logs, and ditches, and flower pots. And up and down hills.
Zach calls that vault “The Flying Boxworthy”.
HAHAHAHA!!!
Those Chinese men gymnasts are CRRRRRRRRAZY good.
Flower pots? That rocks!
Zach (the hockey player, not the gymnast) frequently throws Boxworthy over flower pots. “I say, man, you’re a cross country horse! Bully!”
Flower pots? That rocks!
Yup. That one show had the craaaaziest jumps. There was also one shaped like a bicycle. And actually I almost fell off at the flower pots. I pictured myself landing head first in one.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to Zach throwing Boxworthy.
DUDE! Zach-a-like is AWESOME! *tosses Boxworthy confetti in the air*
YAY Zachelganger!!!
I think I’m slighty behind you guys. I just saw him do his bars routine. That was totally wicked.
That high bar routine was spine-tingling awesome! I’m sorry if I spoiled it for you! @@@@
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Zachelganger! :^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
By the way, :^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to Zachelganger!
That high bar routine was spine-tingling awesome! I’m sorry if I spoiled it for you! @@@@
Oh no worries! I was watching it as I read that.
Zachelganger is a BEAST!
that was a FOXY pommel routine!
Wasn’t that intense? It was so cool to see it live up to all that drama! He looked like a musician jamming once he hit that big move. He looked like he could pommel all night after hitting his groove. That was so unexpectedly fun!
It really was!
