Tonight, in honor of our boys facing off with the favorite team of so many of our buddies in the hockey blogosphere, we’re shaking things up. Instead of doing an IPB-style game diary, we’re tipping our toques in homage to The Willful Caboose in the form of a TWC-style game diary. We’ve long admired Katebits’s effortless, breezy, and illustrative diarizing style; we strongly suspect the end result of this exercise will be a little like Ken Daneyko trying to emulate Niklas Lidstrom, so, uh, bear with us.
PREGAME
Schnookie’s Mood: Resignation. Hockey seasons are like the tides, and I think that Rangers game was a high-water mark, and now we’re in an ebb. It’s the cycle of life.
Pookie’s Mood: Cautiously optimistic that the Devils are on enough of a downswing that this game will not go into a shootout, unlike every single other Devils-Sabres game post-lockout.
Schnookie’s Favorite Devil: I was going to say Rupper, because he’s just such a friendly giant, but then I remembered that Zubrus is also a friendly giant AND he’s the reason Patty’s playing well lately. And as Patty goes, so go the Devils.
Pookie’s Favorite Devil: Bryce “Iron Boar” Salvador. Last season, not a game went by when I didn’t bemoan that the Devils “defense” was barely AHL-quality. This season, when Marty went down, I thought, “Good grief, with our defense, we’ve got less than zero chance of succeeding at all!” Then, a month later, I realized that I hadn’t once worried about the D; I chalk this up to the steadying prescence of the Iron Boar. Paulie’s steadying prescence was obviously wasn’t enough, but between him and the Iron Boar? It’s magic.
Schnookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Bobby Holik.
Pookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Bobby Holik.
Schnookie’s Prediction: Based on our recent history with the Sabres, this game is going to be a total snoozer in which the Devils completely suck ass and I question my motivation as a hockey fan.
Pookie’s Prediction: 500-0 Sabres. In a shootout. Don’t ask how, just know it will happen.
Item Representing Our Hopes That The Devils Win This Game: An Egyptian mummy.
Mummies are educational; we’re interested, in an academic way, in how the Devils handle this possible ebb in the season. Mummies are also gross. Potentially, so are the Devils.
AFTER THE FIRST PERIOD
Schnookie’s Mood: Pleasantly surprised! That was a dynamic period, all things considered. Except for Holik. And Clemmer.
Pookie’s Mood: Giddiness tempered with caution. The first was much more uptempo for the Devils than I was expecting, but the second will, by nature, be the second period. That’s never good.
Schnookie’s Favorite Devil: Paulie. He was playing some seriously dreamy defense.
Pookie’s Favorite Devil: Just as I announced that Zach was unquestionably my favorite Devil this period, Paulie Martin started showing off, making awesome plays in all three zones. Sorry, Paulie, I may be a Devils fan but I’m also human — score a goal, then we’ll talk.
Schnookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Still Holik. Always and forever.
Pookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Bobby “Stupid Penalty” Holik.
Schnookie’s Summary of Events: Other than that stupid goal by Staffy, the Devils looked sassy and fiesty and not at all like they were in some kind of letdown-game funk or post-Marty’s-injury gloom. The Sabres must be really confused, and thinking, “That’s funny. The Devils don’t do that at home.”
Pookie’s Summary of Events: The Devils shockingly capitalized on poor rebound control; the Sabres predictably capitalized on lazy back-checking by Elias.
Item Representing Our Hopes That The Devils Win This Game: Queen Nefertiti.
Offense is the sexiest defense.
AFTER THE SECOND PERIOD
Schnookie’s Mood: I’m not saying. The hockey gods might be listening.
Pookie’s Mood: Shocked! Did Sutter finally make the mad-scientist coaching move of convincing the players that there were playing the 1st period over again rather than the 2nd?
Schnookie’s Favorite Devil: Iron Boar!!! He’s an iron goal-scoring machine!
Pookie’s Favorite Devil: Paulie Martin. (If the Iron Boar can score after I declare him my favorite at the top of the game, maybe Pauile can find that missing finish in the 3rd.)
Schnookie’s Least Favorite Devil: I have not seen anything to make me reconsider my heretofore unshakable belief that it is impossible to be a less favorite Devil than Holik.
Pookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Bobby Holik. I’m sorry Chico, but Holik playing as if he’s never been made aware of the post-lockout rule book is not compelling in any way shape or for
Schnookie’s Summary of Events: That might very well be the first time since Sutter started coaching the Devils that they scored in the second period. Into the other team’s net. Granted, they made up for it by giving one up to the Sabres about three seconds later, but still. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Pookie’s Summary of Events: It’s like both teams realized uptempo hockey is fun.
Best News We’ve Heard In A While: Stanta Claus will not be coming to Devilstown this year!
Item Representing Our Hopes That The Devils Win This Game: The Great Sphinx of Giza.
Answer me these riddles three… Who will win this game? When will Clemmer realize he’s just not that good? Who on the team can swim?
AFTER THE THIRD PERIOD
Schnookie’s Mood: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Elated! That didn’t look like an ebb AT ALL!
Pookie’s Mood: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Now that’s a hockey game!
Schnookie’s Favorite Devil: It’s a toss-up. Clarkson was foxy with all the goal scoring and Crunchy-flattening, but Paulie! Going berserk! Getting payback at that dirty, cheap-shotting punk Goose! They were all dreamy.
Pookie’s Favorite Devil: Paulie didn’t score like I’d hoped I’d tricked him into doing, but I’ve never seen him get into a tussle like that before! In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him open his mouth to speak on the ice, let alone yell. He put the “sexy”, the “passionate”, and the “warrior” in “sexy, passionate warrior” tonight.
Schnookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Sigh. I realize he contributed to Clarkson’s goal with that big hit. But he’s still Holik.
Pookie’s Least Favorite Devil: Bobby Holik. He’s probably borrowing Stan’s Santa costume right now so he can tape a 2-hour “Holikta Claus Holiday Special”. I don’t care if his old-school hitting set up Clarkson’s goal; I’m sure Clarkson could have scored it anyway.
Schnookie’s Summary of Events: I have been told more than once that the Sabres are not very good at hockey, but I don’t want to believe it. I want to believe the high-flying, big-swaggering Devils were just awesome tonight, other than the quick goals they gave up. They were dreamy! DREAMY! I loved this game.
Pookie’s Summary of Events: Lots of goals, lots of hitting, few whistles, and a Devils win? Sweet.
Item Representing Our Feelings Now That The Devils Won This Game: King Tut.
Some mummies are gross, but some are glamorous, sexy, solid-gold winners.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Travis!
Who is this team, and what have they done to the Devils?
Poop. Stupid Sabres. Yeah, I said it!
Staffy really doesn’t like Zach anymore does he?
And yay Travis. :) He’s so adorable.
Look, Bobby Holik was already my least favorite Devil before this game started. He didn’t have to do anything to make it worse.
And as for wondering who this team is and what they did with the Devils, I’m no longer thinking that. This is CLEARLY the regular-old Devils.
I bet Staffy already got his Christmas present from Zach so now he’s like, “Great, I don’t have to pretend I like that punk until June at the earliest!”
Ooooh, that was pretty by Zach!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! Zach says, “THERE’S your Christmas present, Stafford!” (He just saved Patty’s bacon. I was about to fire Patty like he’s never been fired before.)
HAHAHAHAHA! Doc’s making fun of the PA announcer! Meow!
Yay I love Zach and Travis goals. And we have one from each. :)
Oooh, you’re right KG! It’s like an early Christmas present!
Hmm I think an even better Christmas present would be to get an interview with both of them at the same time.
I’m taking baby steps tonight — I’ll start with a win. A super-duper Christmas present would be interviews. :D
Boomer: “Clemmensen really dodged a bullet there. Certainly not with skill.” It is HILARIOUS how virulently she hates him.
So I just popped in to say hi and to say go team go (…whatever team :P) and to let you know that Tom Poti gave you guys a shoutout today. Isn’t that nice of him?
He said: “The biggest thing, the reason why we’re still on top, is because of our system and interchangeable parts. It doesn’t really make a difference if you’re missing one or two guys here or there.”
Anyways…thought you’d get a kick out of that :)
*slinks off into reviled fan world again*
I think a ultra super duper Christmas present would be an interview of Zach and Travis without shirts, showing off their gorgeous muscles. I’ll take that over a win. :)
Okay I officially love Travis and his red forehead more than any other Devil…including Zach. And he’s taken lessons from Zach on how to get his hair perfect, except for the little chunk that was like sticking straight up.
Heather and I are predicting a 2-1 final tonight.
I just knew Tom Poti loved us! :P
Travis has been growing exponentially in cuteness this year, KG. And he’s especially good at rocking that cowlick.
Katebits, I won’t dispute that final score. The only thing I find questionable about it is that it would mean the Devils win.
I thought the injury part of our season was over. What’s uo with Madden getting hurt?
Okay, so Madden’s not hurt? The hell?
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope that booing I’m hearing is Katebits and Heather.
That booing I’m hearing now? Is me.
That period was surprisingly entertaining. I mean, I hate the Sabres and all, but at least they weren’t scored on by Patrick Kaleta!. :P. (Okay, taunting over. The Devils have this one in the bag.)
Hey, if you guys want to cheer for a d-bag like Kaleta, go right ahead. At least MY team wasn’t scored on by Bryce Salvador. :PPPP
Hurry uo! I want to know what ancient Egyptian represents this game so far! (This format is way harder when your team is winning. )
The Iron Boar is unstoppable. There’s no legal way to stop a rocket shot like that.
Yeah, we had some good stuff on tap for a boring game where we would be losing. We had no reason to prepare for being happy at this point! (I’m pretty sure that happiness is about to have its brains ripped out and its body parts embalmed.)
Katebits, I’m humbled, by the way. This format is SO hard!
(And apparently the Sabres found some nefarious way to stop the Iron Boar — now he’s the guy who’s not on the bench. Hmph.)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Crunchy is hideous. And fired.
That was… not good by Crunchy. I missed the replay and asked Pookie what happened. As we rewound the tivo, she said, “Big slow five-holes is what happened.” Heh.
Crunchy just realized he’s wearing a cage and that must make him a hideous monster like Lydman. It threw him off his game.
No, Crunchy! You’re NOT a monster!
That counts?
I would be ten thousand kinds of pissed if that counted against us.
That’s fair.
You know, we rag on Stan Fischler plenty, but that 3-goal lead shit is depressingly true.
That’s fair.
Yup. Hockey justice and all that.
Ooooh! Paulie and Goose! HOTT! (Goose was being a total snot-nosed punk. I may never forgive him for that. :P)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hot damn! What a game!
Sorry, Sabres fans.
So sorry, Sabres fans. But at least it was a good game? (I say that as a question, since I thought the last Devils/Sabres game bit, but some Sabres fans around here thought it rawked. I guess it’s all kind of relative… :P)
Great diary! I’ve always been jealous of Katebits for thinking up that format. It’s so adorable!
Sorry, Sabres fans! And congratulations, Devils fans!
And I have a bone to pick with andrew. His Sharks couldn’t beat the Blue Jackets? What the HELL?! Gah! Can’t they do anything right?? :P
I’ve always been jealous of Katebits for thinking up that format.
Me too! It was so much fun, too! Thanks, Katebits, for letting us borrow your schtick!
His Sharks couldn’t beat the Blue Jackets? What the HELL?!
What the HELL indeed!
*Blubber, blubber, blubber*
YAY Devils.
And I have a bone to pick with andrew. His Sharks couldn’t beat the Blue Jackets? What the HELL?! Gah! Can’t they do anything right?? :P
You ask them to perform the SIMPLEST task, and they blow it. Stupid Sharks.
*Blubber, blubber, blubber*
I take it the number raising was wonderful? :D
I take it the number raising was wonderful? :D
I can’t say that I’ve seen more than one of these, but I thought it was quite fantastic.
*Sniff* Trev’s speech was lovely and there was a lot of nice touches.
It’s always nice when the guy manages to give a nice speech, too. I remember there wasn’t a dry eye in the house after Scotty Stevens’s speech. (It’s also nice when the team throws in a lot of nice touches. It’s a fine line, I think. Sometimes the ceremonies seem strangely over-the-top.)
(It’s also nice when the team throws in a lot of nice touches. It’s a fine line, I think. Sometimes the ceremonies seem strangely over-the-top.)
Yeah, I was a little worried about that too. But it was nice. It was like Trev if that makes sense.
Aww! That does make sense! What a nice way to describe it!
Aw, alix! That’s so cool that they had such a nice ceremony.
I watched the clip of his last game yesterday and got all misty again — and I barely know the guy! :D
Oh man. When they brought out kids wearing all the different sweaters he had worn over the years with his number, I lost it. I was blubbering like a baby.
His last game was pretty incredible, Patty. I (grudgingly) have a TON of respect for Iginla after that.
Congratulations Devils fans! Pardon me, I have to go stick my head in the oven now. I’m actually a little surprised to hear you call that a good game! (I mean, I understand why it was enjoyable for you guys [and actually the 2nd period was fairly entertaining], but the Sabres were at no point competitive.) The Sabres are freaking DOGS.
Great job with the format, by the way! I’m sorry you didn’t get a disasterous Devils game (for many reasons) because I’m curious how this would have gone if the mummy had gotten progressively yuckier. Heh. But I commend you for your mummy choice. It left you you with a lot of glorious growing room.
How about a little praise for Brian Rolston? He kept the puck in that led to Clarkson mugging Paetsch and powering through for the goal; and he not only chased down the puck later to negate an icing, but put home the loosepuck when Clarkson collected and drove to the net. Rolston had a good game.
And how can you hate on Bobby Holik when he’s throwing big hits on a regular basis?
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be a brat! The Devils were good tonight, I even said so to Heather on the way out. :D
Aww, Katebits, don’t put your head in the oven! Tomorrow’s going to be a GLORIOUS day! The Sabres are only going to get better! (But yeah, you’re right — they weren’t ever really in this one. It was a strange turnaround from the last two games our teams have played against each other this year.)
And thanks again for letting us use your format! We are SUCH chickens about copyright issues that we weren’t able to explore mummies in popular culture, so this was nowhere near as funny as it could have been. We had some great ideas about doom-and-gloom hieroglyphics and the Book of the Dead and stuff like that. And some sculptures we hated from our Art History 101 years. :P
John, you’re so right that Rollie was awesome tonight. It was really encouraging to see, too, because Pookie and I were discussing him at lunch today and figured we’d have to give him 9-12 months to get back fully from the ankle thing, like it took Sid.
As for Blobby, I will ALWAYS hate on him, no matter what he does. I’m not a huge fan of hitting for hitting’s sake, and I’m REALLY not a huge fan of his neanderthal pre-lockout style that Chico keeps chortling about. I’ve never liked him, not even when it was before the lockout! I will not be swayed! I’ll take whatever good he can bring to the table, but I will never let up!!! :D
Pardon me, I have to go stick my head in the oven now.
I’m so sorry! It’s not that bad! The Sabres responded to goals quickly! They threw big hits! They were moving their feet! No one was taking dumb penalties! There’s lots to build on there! They were just rusty from not playing for a few days. Or something. I’m so sorry.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be a brat! The Devils were good tonight, I even said so to Heather on the way out. :D
I would have been a brat if I’d been in your shoes! In fact, I was, just last week when we last played the Sabres. :D
But yeah, Kate, you did see the Devils at their finest tonight. That’s a very special treat, and something you don’t see every day. Show some appreciation! :P (Just kidding.)
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be a brat!
A) I didn’t think you were being bratty and
B) If you were (which you weren’t) if we can’t be brats after our teams lose, what’s the point?!
I didn’t think you were being bratty
Okay, good!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
After all of the stupid penalties and failed wraparounds, ClarksonNation is once again rejoicing!
ClarksonNation should be out dancing in the streets!
All we need is music, sweet, sweet music…
It’s been a while for ClarksonNation, hasn’t it? He was in fine form tonight!
Yes he was! A had a bad feeling when the game started and my DVD recorder wouldn’t read a blank disc that either it was going to be a terrible game in which I would be thankful I didn’t waste a blank disc or something good was going to to happen which I would want to post to youtube. Thankfully, it was the latter.
I think if you have to sacrifice by having the DVD recorder not work in order for Clarkson to be that effective, that’s a price I’m certainly willing to pay. :P
Iron though, that you are singing the Iron Boars’ praises, considering who the Tin Tats are facing this week. I guess with all but one player off of the IR now, it’s time to decide on who I should to drop.
Notice it was Pookie mostly praising the Iron Boar. I mean, I praised him a little, but it was tempered with high suspicion. I’m hoping the guys coming off the IR will really shake up the Soldering Iron Boars’ chemistry and throw them all off their games.
Ahem, that last comment should start off with, “Ironic though…”
But yes, that DVD recorder/Clarkson thing is a sacrifice that I’m willing to make also. ;)
You know, the iron/ironic typo made that comment a bit more poetic. :D
The Ironic Boar is a whole other beast.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Why yes, yes it is.
Hee hee hee. Ironic Boar.
That was maybe the UGLIEST Canucks goal I’ve ever seen. But they all count, right?
The Ironic Boar is my kind of d-man.
alix, I think I’ve gone entire seasons without seeing a single pretty Devils goal. They all count the same! :D
(I am LOVING the commercials on this Canucks/Oilers game. Dude, Canada is on FIRE tonight with the commercials!)
(I am LOVING the commercials on this Canucks/Oilers game. Dude, Canada is on FIRE tonight with the commercials!)
Hee! What ones in particular are blowing your mind?
I did love that Roloson was whining for goalie interference on that ugly goal when it was his own d-man’s fault. HAHAHAHA.
Roloson is the biggest fucking whiner. I’ve hated him since he whined his way to the SCF in ’06, and I was SO delighted when he finally ACTUALLY got hurt after faking injuries to get whistles the entire way through the first three rounds.
And I can’t even pick out just one commercial. We’re finding we’re cracking up after almost every one. The one where the guy is hypnotized by the car salesman especially kills me.
WOOOOO! That one certainly wasn’t ugly!
Roloson is the biggest fucking whiner. I’ve hated him since he whined his way to the SCF in ‘06, and I was SO delighted when he finally ACTUALLY got hurt after faking injuries to get whistles the entire way through the first three rounds.
Ugh. He’s probably my least favouite goalie. Such a flippin drama queen.
And I love that hypnotizing car salesmam one too.
hey i’m like 6 hours late but:
His last game was pretty incredible, Patty. I (grudgingly) have a TON of respect for Iginla after that.
I already loved Iggy (sorry Alix) and I got seriously choked up when they all shook hands and Trev skated around and waved at everyone and the whole crowd was on their feet and the announcer was like “He hasn’t said it officially, but I think we all know that this is the end of a long career for Trevor Linden.”
I’ve never watched a ceremony where I got wicked emotional. I wasn’t that emotionally invested in the team until like 1999, and the only number from these past few years that might be retired is Hasek’s. Ahem, no comment. Its too early to say if anyone since then will one day reach that level but this “core” has really just entrenched themselves in Buffalo and if great things happen in the next few seasons and any of them have their number in the rafters in 20 years, I know I’ll be a complete wreck.
I’m getting the feeling that you really don’t like Bobby Holik.
I missed most of this game due to the need for sleep winning out over the need for to watch hockey. Sounds like I didn’t miss much from a Sabres fan perspective.
Good morning, everyone!
Amy, I’m under the impression it was NOT a good game from the Sabre angle. But I’m thinking, “You missed a GEM! It was AWESOME! Best game EVAH!” :P
“I’m sure Clarkson could have scored it anyway.” Clarkson. Really? I am so over hating Bobby Holik. I can’t hate a player that is hitting opponents so hard that they disappear from the screen.
I totally agree about Paulie! I saw on the replay how Paulie looked to the ref, saw the penalty was called, and then drilled the Sabre. Paulie is so considerate in his vengeance.
I can’t hate a player that is hitting opponents so hard that they disappear from the screen.
Heh. Still, I stand by my hatred. He doesn’t like Devils fans, so I don’t like him. :P (Also, Chico keeps singing his praises for his “pre-lockout” style. Considering having a “pre-lockout” style made, say, Derian Hatcher a laughingstock, I’m just trying to be consistent. :P)
I am so over hating Bobby Holik.
NEVER! NEVER EVER EVER!
Good morning IPB! Sorry I’ve been so remiss in my crowd-sourced blogging duties, but I’ve got this new job that actually makes me work during work hours. The NERVE of some employers…geez.
I’m in a bit of a bind here, and I hope the -Ookies don’t mind me posting this here…I have a ticket for Sunday’s game with no taker yet. Is anyone here interested? I’m not scary. I promise. And I’m married. My better half needs to go to work, leaving the ticket unused. Even if your a [dramatic pause] Flyers fan, you’d be welcome.
If anyone’s interested, feel free to drop me an electronic line at ron.redank@yahoo.com.
I’m in a bit of a bind here, and I hope the -Ookies don’t mind me posting this here
Not at all! I hope you find someone to take the ticket; it should be a good game. I’m very impressed you’d be willing to go with a Flyers fan! That sucks about having to work at a new job! That blows. Employers should know better. :D
Well, I took a Rangers [spits] fan to the full moon game last week, and that worked out pretty well. I was fully expecting the Devils to be realigned under the Western Conference the following day.
redank, I can’t BELIEVE your new employer expects you to work. That’s AWFUL!
And I think if you need to be taking rival fans with you to games in order for the Devils to win, so be it. Frisby has to give up his DVD recorder, and you have to give up going to games with people you actually get along with… We all have to make sacrifices, right? :P
I’m under the impression it was NOT a good game from the Sabre angle.
Hee. It’s been more than made up for this morning via the amazing Crunchy photo that Anne posted on her blog. I’m seeing him (and Baby Crunchy) in an entirely new and awesome light.
Hee hee! I’d seen that picture somewhere before! Be careful, Crunchys — alcohol and boating are a terrible combination! :P
Morning, IPB! Woooo Devils! Sorry, Sabres fans. :( I know how you feel, I guess. Hmph.
Maaaaan…Sabres and Sharks lose on the same night?! What the hell?!?! Effing weak dude. Sorry Ookies, but I was hoping to see Goose wail on Paulie after that cross check to the back. I know that’s blasphemy around these parts. Please don’t ban me!
And I have a bone to pick with andrew. His Sharks couldn’t beat the Blue Jackets? What the HELL?! Gah! Can’t they do anything right?? :P
Sorry Patty! Stupid Mason was playing out of his mind! He let one goal in on 48 shots. Really? Mason? Ellis did that to us back in November too. It’s like they get all psyched up and play the game of their life when the Sharks are in town.
Sorry Ookies, but I was hoping to see Goose wail on Paulie after that cross check to the back.
Goose started it! What was Paulie supposed to do? He’s a guy with a bad back getting cheap-shotted at the end of a game! Goose got what was coming to him! :PPPPP
Goose started it!
Nuh uh!!! Paulie did!!!
Just kidding. I was just pissed that the Sabres were losing. Plus I love it when Goose gets angry.
Plus I love it when Goose gets angry.
Me too. His whole demeanor changes, and I suspect that he has quite the potty mouth while on the ice.
Sorry Ookies, but I was hoping to see Goose wail on Paulie after that cross check to the back. I know that’s blasphemy around these parts.
Hey, I’d let that go if not for the fact that Goose cross-checked Paulie first. What, the Sabres feed didn’t show that part? Stay classy, Buffalo feed! :P
I suspect that he has quite the potty mouth while on the ice.
I hope Crunchy gives him a stern talking-to about that. We know how he feels about coarse language!
I hope Crunchy gives him a stern talking-to about that. We know how he feels about coarse language!
:^::::::::::::::::::::
Crunchy’s like, “I walked right into that one, didn’t I? And I’ll continue to do so for the rest of my career, won’t I? If I could do that differently…”
What, the Sabres feed didn’t show that part? Stay classy, Buffalo feed! :P
Woo! Looks like I touched a nerve! Sorry, Ookies. Of course I’m only messing around!
So, I am hemming and hawing over a fantasy trade that I can’t seem to pull the trigger on. It’s a three-team swap. Lemme know what you guys think:
Team 1 to team 2: Kopitar and Ersberg
Team 2 to my team: Lupul, Kesler, and Vokoun
My team to team 1: D. Sedin and Dumont
Also, I get team 1′s 3rd round draft pick next year.
I don’t like the trade at all, but I need a goalie like nobody’s business. Really bad. What do you guys think?
Woo! Looks like I touched a nerve! Sorry, Ookies. Of course I’m only messing around!
Hee hee! Me too! I mean, yeah, I’m going to carry a grudge against Goose forever, but I’m not, like, going to take it out on anyone but him. :P (He’s just been added to my ever-expanding mental list of players who have cheap-shotted Paulie. He’s in select company with, um, pretty much just Marc Staal.)
As for your proposed trade, I have no idea what Vokoun’s been up to this year, nor can I speak for Kesler, but Lupul seems to be vaguely figuring his shit out these days. I still think he’s a pile of puke, though, and I hate his name. I’m not sure that’s a price I’d be willing to pay, having to have him on my team. But no one ever accused me of being a good fantasy GM. :P
Wait, you actually trade draft picks in future drafts? That’s AWESOME! And intense. Anyway, where was I? I think it’s a trade that makes sense, but up until yesterday I had Mike Commodore on my team, so you might not want to listen to me. Still, you can’t go wrong with a Flyer this season, Kesler’s not chopped liver, and if you need a goalie, you need a goalie. Go for it!
Lupul seems to be vaguely figuring his shit out these days. I still think he’s a pile of puke, though, and I hate his name.
That’s what I love about this place. Right there.
Still, you can’t go wrong with a Flyer this season, Kesler’s not chopped liver, and if you need a goalie, you need a goalie. Go for it!
I know, I know. I just don’t think Lupul is ever going to amount to much. Kesler has great potential. The real problem is that Vokoun has all but lost his starting job in the past week or so. So, until he wins it back, I’m getting another backup.
Also, I have to give up two of my top five scorers. That’s tough.
That’s what I love about this place. Right there.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::: Glad to hear it! :D
So really, how badly are you being beaten up by your lack of goaltending? Is it hamstringing you so badly that you’ll give up two of your top five scorers? That’s REALLY grim. You’ve got to think Vokoun will eventually get his job back, but… ouch. (Lupul really isn’t going to amount to much. I think I can say that with no small authority. I mean, LOOK AT HIS NAME!)
So really, how badly are you being beaten up by your lack of goaltending?
Dan Ellis, Mathieu Garon, Brian Boucher, and Johan Hedberg. Those are my goalies. I (obviously) didn’t plan on Ellis and Garon both losing their jobs when I drafted them. So, long story short, I’ve lost all goaltending stats on at least two or three different weeks because I couldn’t reach the minimum of 3 starts.
You’ve got to think Vokoun will eventually get his job back, but… ouch.
Exactly, but it’s a keeper league, so his future value is worth taking into consideration, as is Keslers. The draft pick is cool, but the guy giving it up is in first place, so it’s going to be a low 3rd rounder. Oh well, whateva!
Lupul really isn’t going to amount to much. I think I can say that with no small authority. I mean, LOOK AT HIS NAME!
Schnookie, are you a rare sufferer of aibohphobia? Because your hatred of Lupul’s name, while admirable in it’s tenacity, is borderline hilarious.
Andrew, Kesler has really been picking it up lately. He will probably do some good things. That sucks you have to give up Danny Sedin though. He has 14 goals now. Booo yeah.
He has 14 goals now. Booo yeah.
I know! Don’t remind me!
Yeah, I don’t know if I wanna do it.
Schnookie, are you a rare sufferer of aibohphobia? Because your hatred of Lupul’s name, while admirable in it’s tenacity, is borderline hilarious.
It’s not the palindrome that bugs me. It’s the aesthetic of “Joffrey Lupul”. Just the whole thing gives me the creeps. :P
Y’all, I’m sorry, but I can’t even remember what Lupul looks like because everytime I hear his name, I just imagine a werewolf in hockey gear.
LUPUL. It just sounds like a drooling, howling werewolf, doesn’t it? And when the moon is not full, he transforms into a drooling, howling human named Joffrey.
Egads.
Schnookie’s been hung up on the name “Joffrey Lupul” for YEARS. And “Jon Sim”. If you ever want to drive her batty, act like Billy Crystal’s wife in the “Princess Bride” and shout “Jon Sim! Jon Sim! Jon Sim!”
AIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Shut up, you witch!
Oh big fucking surprise. Sundin is pushing back his decision until next week. GOD! I mean it’s so obvious he’s going to the Rangers. Why he can’t just say so?!?! I yearn for the day I can open my newspaper and not see his stupid bald head every day!
AIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Shut up, you witch!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I yearn for the day I can open my newspaper and not see his stupid bald head every day!
Dude, I do not blame you in the SLIGHTEST. That is ridiculous! Sundin is so stupid. He’s milking this decision thing for all it’s worth – goodness.
I’m sick of hearing about Mats Sundin and I don’t even have a team that’s competing for Mats Sundin. Or rather, “competing”.
Shut up, you witch!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I love that Forsberg is talking about coming back so now we can all suffer through not just Sundin talk, but also Forsberg talk. Barf.
Alls I can say is that Mars better not improve the Rangers.
I mean I don’t even WANT Sundin. But I just don’t want to talk about him anymore. Can you imagine if Sundin ever has to save someone’s life by making a decision? “Oh no! Do I pull you up from this glacier with my own Swedish arm or with this ice pick? Uhhhhhh…geee…I don’t know….Oh I guess you froze to death while you were waiting for me. Oooops”
I love that Forsberg is talking about coming back so now we can all suffer through not just Sundin talk, but also Forsberg talk. Barf.
Dude, the Forsberg talk has become as much of a joke as Forsberg himself.
I’m going to watch Trev’s sweater raising thing again to mellow out. Bebeh Trev was soooo cute!
I love that Forsberg is talking about coming back so now we can all suffer through not just Sundin talk, but also Forsberg talk. Barf.
I saw that yesterday, and when I woke up this morning I was sure I had dreamt it. More like a nightmare actually. Bah.
Hey IPB, how’re we all doing today? Good, I hope!
I’m tired and want to go home.
That is all.
(Aren’t y’all glad I shared?)
Aren’t y’all glad I shared?
At least you’re honest. So yeah, I’m totally glad you shared :P
(Aren’t y’all glad I shared?)
Yes. I feel not alone now. :D
Hey great article on Zach on espn.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=lebrun_pierre&id=3777992
Aw, Zach, so hard-working. Heh. (I wish it wasn’t a requirement to talk to JP when writing an article about Zach.)
Awww, Zach is awesome.
I wish it wasn’t a requirement to talk to JP when writing an article about Zach.
Agreed.
Wow, some thread death we’ve got going here.
Ummm, look at that hobo!
Hi, Mags! I’m only slightly dead.
Sorry, I was just trying not to bawl my eyes out again watching Trev’s retirement footage.
Shorty (our radio/TV guy) mentioned that Matty’s been like a lost puppy on the road ever since Trev his roommate retired. Awwwww.
Uh oh. Caitlin have you checked Kukla? You might wanna have some Stoli ready.
Aw, fuck! This is the second one he’s had this season. The guys on the Stars news blog are saying that Zubov must be talking retirement at this point. I am really unamused. Poor Russian.
You might wanna have some Stoli ready.
There’s a liquor store on the way home, no worries. I certainly feel like drinking, that is for damn sure.
I’m only slightly dead.
That’s not completely dead. That’s actually mostly alive. No problem.
This is the second one he’s had this season
Oof. That’s no good. Sucks.
I certainly feel like drinking, that is for damn sure.
I can imagine. Poor Caitlin *hugs*
That’s not completely dead. That’s actually mostly alive. No problem.
:^:::::::::::::::: Heh.
Oof. That’s no good. Sucks.
I hate to say it, but I think he’s done for. He keeps having all kinds of lower body issues and I think it would be better for him if he went out on top. Two Stanley Cups and being the highest scoring Russian-born defenseman in NHL history isn’t anything to sneeze at.
He had hip surgery over the summer, came back for like five games, reinjured it, and will repeat the process again…
He had hip surgery over the summer, came back for like five games, reinjured it, and will repeat the process again…
Perhaps he should just take the year off to deal with the health issues… Maybe. I don’t know. And maybe he should retire. I know it’s kind of ironic for me to be saying this, but sometimes you need to listen to your body. Right now, it sounds like Corps de Zubov is trying to make it pretty clear that this is not the way to go.
Well, it’s official…Sundin is a Canuck.
Sorry alix.
Damn, alix! I’m so sorry. I really do understand how you feel. Would you like some vodka?
Would you like some vodka?
mmmm…vodka.
It seems like a good night for drinking.
It seems like a good night for drinking.
Of course as soon as I wrote that, I look over at Working the Corners and see that Michalek is out tonight against the Wings. 2 of our top 6 forwards out….now it really seems like a good night for drinking.
alix, Caitlin, I am SO SORRY! What a bad day for IPB Irregulars!
I was going to complain about the fact that I turned on NHL Live only to hear “an exciting announcement about the Winter Classic (TM) — it’s being sponsored by Bridgestone! It is now the NHL Winter Classic (TM) Sponsored by Bridgestone!” Uh… This is news, WHY!?!? And why are they trying to make the Winter Retread (TM) that much more annoying?!? Don LaGreco and the Bridgestone guys are all, “Hockey fans are tough and so it only makes sense for Bridgestone, makers of fine Blizzak tires, to partner with the NHL!” Boomer’s all, “Excuse me, I have to go buy some tires! Yeeee-haw!” I’m all for more transparency in this new age of advertising gods and monsters, but honestly.
Anyway, I was going to complain, but then I realized it could be worse — Sundin could be coming to my team or my favorite player could be injured again. Sorry guys!
OK, I was just walking the dog. WHAT the HECK? I was really thinking he was going to the Rangers. Ummm…I know I probably SHOULD be excited, but yeah. Huh.
What if I lose Matty because of Mats?!? I’ll cut a bitch. And what the hell are we going to sign the Sedins with? Huh.
Ok, but if Lui gets healthy… And we have THAT much depth at center? *Drool*
I don’t know! I’m confused.
Sorry for spamming the comments. Heh.
It’s not that bad alix. Vancouver didn’t have to give up anything (other than money of course) to get him. Imagine what the rangers would have had to do. And Sundin is just signed for this season right? If that’s the case, there’s no reason not to be happy I think.
Montreal 3
Philly 1
Wooooooooooooo! They’re finally playing like they actually care. Great first period. (Sorry for the Tranny Brides by the way. Hmm, no, not at all actually)
Yeah, you’re right, Grrreg. Just the one season. Ok, it’s pretty cool! I’ll be happy! Now Lui just needs to get healthy!
alix, it’ll all be okay! Grrrreg is right! But still, I’m so sorry! I’m sure it’ll turn out awesome, though. He might be indecisive and bald, but he’s still a good hockey player. (And now I’m ducking out of the comments, because we’re on tivo delay! No more Tranny Bride spoilers! :D)
Oops… sorry about the spoiler. I’m off to bed anyway. Good night!
Thanks, Schnookie. It is cool! I’m just a cautious Canucks fan ya know. I’m sure I’ll come around. I’m already more excited.
Aww, thanks, Pookie! He is Soviet Soldier Zubov, so I’m sure he’ll be terrorizing the team in no time.
Tee hee hee. How amusing it is going to be listening to announcers trying to call Sedin, Sedin, Sundin on the PP?
Hello!!!
Anybody home?
Oh hey Myra. Just putting my order in for a Sundin sweater… :D
I saw, alix. I can tell you are thrilled. It could be worse. It could have been Avery.
Oh I’m coming around quite a bit. In Gillis I trust.
And it is kind of awesome we screwed the Rangers.
And it is kind of awesome we screwed the Rangers.
That is always a good thing! Maybe since the Rangers didn’t get Sundin, they’ll decide to take Avery back. I’d love to see that contract gone.
Poor Zubie. I hope he doesn’t have to retire this way. Maybe this surgery will get him back for this season, then he can announce it when he’s healthy. I was really hoping for another couple of years.
And congrats, alix! If you’re happy about it! :D I don’t know anything about Sundin, except that if he was going to take that deal, why didn’t he take it in the summer? Sheesh!
Don’t forget! The Rangers won more games when Avery was playing than they did when he was injured!
And Zetterberg was drafted in the 7th round!
And the Staals are brothers!
I know, Patty, on both counts. Poor Zubie and what was Sundin waiting for. I guess he finally had to realize he weren’t going to get any better offers.
Oh, gees, we are going on a 5-3. It’s a bad sign that I am not excited about this.
HAT TRICK FOR LOUI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOUI LOUI LOUI!!! LOU_EYE!
“he weren’t” sorry, I got distracted!
WOOOOO!!!
(Loui had 5 goals in a row over two games, y’all.)
Myra, :^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Can’t see why I was so distracted. :P
Richards just made a blind backhand pass INTO THE NET!
WOOOO!!!
He’s got 4 points!!! Yay! B-rad!!!
My head is spinning!
And congrats, alix! If you’re happy about it! :D I don’t know anything about Sundin, except that if he was going to take that deal, why didn’t he take it in the summer? Sheesh!
I’m pretty sure I’m happy. Yeah, much happier that it’s only 1 year. Hee. We can get all that money back and sign Matty and the Sedins. Apparently Mats liked the offer, but he wanted to know a little bit more about the Canucks before he fully decided. And he wanted to make sure he wouldn’t disrupt anyone coming into the dressing room. Gillis also said Mats told him he is in the best physical/mental shape he has been in in 10 years, so yeah. We’ll see. I’m optimistic but not totally sold yet.
Good for Louie. I’ve always liked that kid.
Barch has an ice bag. That’s what Otter looked like when he broke his hand.
And hands off Nisky!!!!
I’m glad you’re okay with it, alix! Maybe that’s Gillis’ way of banking Matty’s cap room for next season.
What is wrong with these people. Leave our little Nisky alone!!!!
I think you’re right, Patty. And Gillis better resign Matty. Matty was the Canuck that called Mats up and said how rad Vancouver is. Looooove him. :)
Ok, Patty, Dave just got his new SI and they picked as the best NHL broadcasters for 2008, Jim Hughson and Brian Hayward. Isn’t Hayward that awful guy who subbed for Razor last year?
EEEEE! Jimmy Hughson is da bomb though!
Jim Hughson I can understand, but Brian Hayward???? Even DUCKS FANS DON’T LIKE HIM!
(Yes, he’s the guy that subbed for Razor. With the 1979 parted-in-the-middle haircut? And wall-to-wall talking?)
Yikes, that guy is awful. Hey, did you see that Boucher got a goal? And Halpie is back and scored one for TB.
Brian Hayward is an ATROCITY. Are we sure it wasn’t opposite day when SI printed that?
I’ll have to go back and read it. You know that Hub can be easily confused. :P
How are the Tranny Brides doing? My TB TB’s did not fair too well. Poor Smitty.
Yay Bouche! I saw that! And I just saw that Halpie got a goal. I’m so glad he’s back. I miss him. Maybe they can re-sign him when he’s a free agent!
Did they misspell Emrick “Hayward”?
Did they misspell Emrick “Hayward”?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::
Or Strangis or Reaugh?
Gah!
Crap. They do not need to lose this or to even give up one point in a tie. Dangit. Dangit. Dangit.
Sorry, that was me stating the OBVIOUS.
The Tranny Brides, alas, did not win tonight. That’s okay. I’m too brain dead to really feel one way or the other about anything today. :D
I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS.
CRAP.
If it were Morrow, it would be no goal.
Man, I hate this season. Poor Lui gets a hat trick and now they’re going to lose! They need the points!
Banana phone!
OH MY GOSH!!!!
NO GOAL!!!!!!
I was just about to say “Banana Phone” when we got the call. Hee.
I don’t like this, not one bit.
Have I mentioned how glad I am to be a fan of a team that wears black pants? Those red ones are awful! So icky.
Oh wow. Sundin actually left money on the table. WOOOO. He’s a classy bald man.
WOW.
WOOOOO!!! Go Ribs! Yours was nice, too, Brad!
I’d say Brad had a pretty good night. Glad to see it.
Congrats, Stars fans!
And alix, that’s MADNESS!!!! He left money on the table? I never would have expected that!
I mean a million or so, so it’s not a shit load. But still. That’s pretty awesome. He wanted Gillis to have some money to do something at the trade deadline.
And apparently Gillis knew all along he would decide close to Dec 15, and it was just the media saying he was missing all those deadlines.
YAY for you Stars fans!
What do you mean, alix?
I’m really loving the locker-room look after the wins, where we get to see Tipp hand out the Game Puck. “Way to work, men! Way to work!”
Dude. I love Razor’s tie.
where we get to see Tipp hand out the Game Puck. “Way to work, men! Way to work!”
I have the biggest old-man crush on Tippett. Myra can attest, I’m sure, to my mild swooniness when he signed my Whalers yearbook from when Tipp played for them.
I have no cable this evening (Foiled again by Blime Blarner! Drats) but Jen kept me updated on the game score. It sounds like it was an exciting one! And we won! Huzzah!
Dude, I here you on the Tipp crush. He is really nice to look at in person. TV does not do him justice. :P
I love the locker room shots too! If they only lasted longer. Hee.
I have a same-age-as-I-am crush on Tipp! :P
I’m so impressed that you had a Whalers’ yearbook, Caitlin! Let alone that you got him to sign it. Was he surprised to see it?
What do you mean, alix?
Patty, that was just about Mats leaving money on the table.
Patty, Jen got the Whalers’ yearbook on eBay for Caitlin for Christmas. She had him sign it when we went to the Euless practice. Yes, he was a little surprised and had a good chuckle over it.
I’m so impressed that you had a Whalers’ yearbook, Caitlin! Let alone that you got him to sign it. Was he surprised to see it?
Jen got it for me for Christmas! He seemed surprised but said, “Another old picture of me?” or something along those lines – I think someone else in line had Whalers pics of him too. He was kind of self-deprecating about it. It was thoroughly adorable.
I got a kick out of reading his player profile from 88-89. Career objective? “Dave would like to stay involved in hockey when his playing days are over, and maintain his house renovation business.”
He also shared some sort of community service award with Joel Quenneville, of all people.
Whoops, sorry Caitlin, I thought you had left!
Patty, that was just about Mats leaving money on the table.
That’s what I thought. I was just wondering what money he left. (You answered later.)
It was thoroughly adorable.
That’s a perfect description of him! (I’m sure his players would disagree.)
Oh no, Myra, it’s okay! I’m just late to the party as usual! ;)
That’s what I thought. I was just wondering what money he left. (You answered later.)
Ahh gotcha. Sorry about that.
No prob!! @@@@
On the Fly said it was an “undisclosed” contract. I assume it’s the original 10 million, right? And I’m with you, alix. If Matty wants him to come to town, then we should be all for it.
I assume it’s the original 10 million, right? And I’m with you, alix. If Matty wants him to come to town, then we should be all for it.
I think it’s the original 10 minus a million so 9 or so, and then it’s pro rated to be a cap hit of 5.6. That’s what I heard.
Matty called Mats this morning and basically convinced him to come because he and Vancouver are so rad. Hee. So yeah, if Matty likes him I suppose I can too. :)
Good morning, everyone! I hope we’re all doing well on this fine, snowy day!
I hope we’re all doing well on this fine, snowy day!
Today is my company’s moving day. All of my stuff is packed and my department is pretty much chilling out here until the end of the day when we can move our computers to the new building. The rest of Dewey, Addem and Howe is a complete clusterfuck, however.
Oooh! Way to play your cards right, Amy! It’s always great to be the chillaxing one in the middle of a clusterfuck!
We’re getting a pretty nasty combination of sleet (my boss described it as a margarita without the salt), snow and rain right now. So it looks like my department’s holiday lunch has been pushed up to 11:30 so we can all go home earlier. I’m not going to complain!
So it looks like my department’s holiday lunch has been pushed up to 11:30 so we can all go home earlier. I’m not going to complain!
I wouldn’t complain either!
That said, I don’t think it’s even snowing here at the moment.
We’re getting a pretty nasty combination of sleet (my boss described it as a margarita without the salt), snow and rain right now.
We’ve got snow. Lots of snow. And no end to the snow in sight.
We’ve got snow. Lots of snow. And no end to the snow in sight.
Well, wouldn’t want moving day to be boring.

Exactly. It’s pretty comical.

Well, wouldn’t want moving day to be boring.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And no, it’s not snowing here anymore either. Rain. Lots of rain. With no end to the rain in sight. :D
It’s hella snowy here! If it snows like this literally all day, I MIGHT not have to play Holiday Pops…but it won’t. It has to be full blown snopocolypse for our concerts to be canceled. Amy, are you guys going forward with the move?! That seems wonky.
It’s hella snowy here! If it snows like this literally all day, I MIGHT not have to play Holiday Pops…but it won’t.
Should we be keeping our fingers crossed for you? :p
Um, off the record? Yes, please cross all your fingers and toes. Heh.
Amy, are you guys going forward with the move?! That seems wonky.
All systems are still go for the move. They just wheeled out the pop machine and the candy machine…not a good thing to have happen at lunchtime.
Katebits, here’s hoping the BPO cancels tonight. You deserve a night in to watch hockey.
Um, off the record? Yes, please cross all your fingers and toes. Heh.
Will do. We may have been talking about whether they’ll let us out early at my office. Despite the fact that it’s not really snowing. So, you know, dedicated employees all over the damn place…
They just wheeled out the pop machine and the candy machine…
They’re even moving the candy machines?! Those seem like the kind of things you leave behind in a move. Live the oven.
You deserve a night in to watch hockey.
You take that back , Amy. No ONE deserves to have to sit and watch the Sabres. :P
Meg, I’m glad to know the publishing industry is run by such dedicated folks. :D
They’re even moving the candy machines?! Those seem like the kind of things you leave behind in a move. Live the oven.
I think the oven is coming with us, too.
Meg, I’m glad to know the publishing industry is run by such dedicated folks. :D
Hee! I think most of the office took all of next week off since it was only a 2 1/2 day week so people are anxious to get their vacations started. Particularly since we don’t reopen until Jan. 5th.
It’s actually started snowing now here too, but it’s not actually sticking yet. Everyone’s got their umbrellas out though. When I first moved here I thought that was the weirdest thing, but it actually works quite well.
I think the oven is coming with us, too.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::
That must be kinda fun — starting out the new year in a new space!
I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed for everyone to get to go home early and/or not have to play Holiday Pops! My branch had a holiday breakfast this morning and it was surprisingly lovely. The manager brought in a local jazz guitarist who played jazzy carols while we eat delicious homemade home fries and sweet biscuits and bacon and other wonderful things. It was lovely! Less lovely? The cookie exchange spread which was easily 2/3 store-bought. Sandra would have been proud but I was a little disappointed.
Ooh, what did you make for the cookie exchange spread?
I made peanut butter cookies with red and green M&Ms in them. It was only after I made them that I freaked out that I probably shouldn’t bring peanut products into the public meeting room that’s used for an after school program. But I cleared it with the director of the program this morning, so I guess there must not be any peanut allergy kids in the after school session. And there weren’t any left when I went to retrieve the cookie plate, so that’s a good sign, right?
Ooh, they sound delicious. It would never have occured to think that you shouldn’t make peanut butter cookies. It’s a good thing I don’t work near kids!
Less lovely? The cookie exchange spread which was easily 2/3 store-bought.
Bummer, Pookie! That’s such a disappointing thing to have happen. :(
And there weren’t any left when I went to retrieve the cookie plate, so that’s a good sign, right?
I think that’s an excellent sign!
It is not snowing here in the slightest – it actually feels nice and balmy outside – but I am crossing my fingers for you, Katebits, that there’s not a lot of Holiday Pops left to be played…er…or something like that!
that there’s not a lot of Holiday Pops left to be played…er…or something like that!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It would never have occured to think that you shouldn’t make peanut butter cookies.
The only reason I thought of it is because my cousin’s daughter has peanut allergies. Otherwise, I’d be bringing big piles of peanuts into the meeting room everyday! Heh.
Ahoy hoy, everyone! We just got back from the holiday lunch. My boss told me not to stay long here, though… I’m not sure whether I should leave. Heh. There is NO ONE here, so I’m wondering if they closed the site while we were out.
Mmmmmm cookie exchange…
Hey guys! I just got back from getting my Mats tattoo. :D
There is NO ONE here, so I’m wondering if they closed the site while we were out.
You should probably just slip out and when questioned, say that you were afraid a biocontaminant had leaked out of the lab and everyone save you had evacuated!
Hey guys! I just got back from getting my Mats tattoo. :D
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Schnookie, I was thinking as I watched the sleet turn to rain that you probably missed your window to close early while you were at lunch, which totally blows. But I think “don’t stay here long” means “you should be here when the clock strikes 2:30″. Heh.
alix, does your Mats tattoo ponder difficult life decisions when you flex your bicep? Mats thinks suit and tie — *flex* — Mats thinks t-shirt and jeans…

Oh man, y’all, I’m beat! I’m so glad it’s Friday. I don’t know what I’d do if I had to work another day this week. Thank GOODNESS Christmas is right around the corner!
AHAHAHAHA. Larry Brooks called Mats a money grabbing mercenary. Gotta love it coming from him considering he covers the RANGERS.
Larry Brooks would be the expert on money grubbing mercenaries!
Larry Brooks called Mats a money grabbing mercenary.
Yup. Because if he’d signed with the Rangers we all know it would have been a move motivated by his deep ties to the organization and area, and his belief that bringing the Stanley Cup to New York is his higher spiritual calling. :P
And on that note, I’m outta here!!! WOOO!!! See y’all later!
See, there are many things I would accuse Mats Sundin of, but being a money-grubbing mercenary is really not on the list.
Hee!
See ya Schnookie! Have a good afternoon off!
Meg, yeah. I don’t really get the money grabbing thing. If he was money grabbing he would have taken the 2 year deal no questions asked on July 1. He wouldn’t have called up Matty because he was concerned about how he would fit in with the guys. He wouldn’t have left Gillis some money on the table. He wouldn’t have made sure he wasn’t putting any guys out of a job. It’s still a crap shoot whether he’ll be able to put the Canucks over the top, but I think it’s unfair to say he was only in it for the money.
Alix, he wasn’t saying that Mats was any different than almost anyone who has played for the Rangers recently, in fact, he used the Gomez and Drury signings as two examples of guys who said they always wanted to play for the Rangers, but it took some huge contracts to get them there. He wasn’t saying Mats was a bad guy.
He blamed Sather for some stupid signings over the summer that didn’t allow any room to make this signing, although he also felt that Sundin will have less of an impact on the Canucks than would have had on the Rangers – I not sure I agree, the Rangers need a scoring winger and, quite frankly, a coach who doesn’t change line combinations every 5 minutes. They don’t need another center.
Have fun, Schnookie! Wooooo for getting out early!
All that’s true, Sue, but I still think that if he were a mercenary, money-grubbing or otherwise, he would have left Toronto rather than staying with them, frittering away his career playing with worthless wingers, until they decided they didn’t want him anymore. I think there’s lots to dislike about Sundin, but I don’t really think there’s an argument for him being particularly mercenary.
Sue, yeah he was bashing Rangers management too. I just found it funny.
And I agree, to me Sundin was always a better fit with Vancouver. He just slides in on that second line and helps out the Sedins. He improves the power play. the Canucks have had balanced scoring all season so he doesn’t have to “be that guy” he just hopefully puts up his regular point a game. They simply use up the cap space that was sitting there and don’t have to give any young guys up.
The Rangers would have had to shuffle players out and their team would have probably become worse by the time they squeezed Sundin in there.
Good point, Meg.
Meg, you have to remember something. To Larry Brooks, Sundin is a name. A big one. And, in some ways, he’s right. To a city that really values hockey, like Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, (insert your Canadian city here) or yes, even Philly, or Minneapolis, where it isn’t the 16th sport behind high-school pick-up basketball, this is a huge signing. And that’s what Brooks sees. He sees the celebrity impact.
Otherwise he’d see that in order to actually make Sundin fit, they needed to trade a center, first or second line. Gomez (limited NTC) since Drury has a full no-movement clause that he would have had to be asked to waive. For basically a half-year of Mats. Or, they needed to move Drury to the wing, where he isn’t nearly as effective, and they need a scoring winger. So, were they going to trade Gomez for a scoring winger and half a year of Mats and hope it worked? I don’t think so. They were probably going to move Drury to wing and pray. If I were Mats, I would have gone to Vancouver, too. But that’s not what Brooks sees.
Well, of course it’s a huge signing. Sundin may be old (and overpaid, yes) but he’s also pretty much the most consistent NHL player this side of Lidstrom. And for all the knocks his competitiveness got last year, he’s always been plenty competitive during games. All the Sabres he’s punched in the back of the head over the years could attest to that. I don’t like him, but I think if you’re going to overpay someone, it’s not a bad idea to overpay someone who always does the same thing year in and year out. And, if you’re the Canucks and don’t have fantabulous wingers waiting for your second-line center, it’s probably a good idea to sign a guy whose spent his whole career proving he doesn’t need them.
That doesn’t really change my opinion of Brooks. Which is that he’s an idiot who’s wrong about Sundin. :p
Oh Brooks is definitely an idiot :)
That doesn’t really change my opinion of Brooks. Which is that he’s an idiot who’s wrong about Sundin.
HA! That really is the bottom line here, isn’t it?
Did the combination of Sundin/Larry Brooks kill it?
Sorry about that.
Did the combination of Sundin/Larry Brooks kill it?
Larry Brooks strikes again!
Hey guys, what’s shakin’? Anything exciting other than all of the wonderful snowfall?
Anything exciting other than all of the wonderful snowfall?
I’m excited it’s the weekend! And excited that Lou issued a gag order to Clemmer, so we’ll hear a bit less from him going forward.
Hey andrew, if you’re still around! Not much goin’ on here, not even snow anymore. Just a full, long day of it being 34 degrees and raining. Or alternating between rain and sleet. It’s an ugly, ugly scene. There is NOTHING more depressing than 34-degree rain. :P
I just had the most marvelous nap! This horrible week is behind me! WOOOOOOOOO!!! I have nothing but a half day of work on MOnday between me and Christmas!!!!!!! Maybe we should open presents tonight… :P

That’s like an Ookie Christmas miracle!
Vancouver was Mats first choice. He loves us! He really loves us!
The Canucks are sending me a present! Fingers crossed for a cab voucher with Matty dressed in a bow.

Yikes! Sounds rough. We have been getting spotty rainfall for the past few days, but nothing crazy. It is butt cold here though. It’s getting down to, like 25 degrees at night! I know you guys scoff at that, but for us, that’s like doomsday weather.
And excited that Lou issued a gag order to Clemmer, so we’ll hear a bit less from him going forward.
I bet Boomer is stoked about that one. Nabokov issued a gag order last night. And by that I mean his play made SJ fans everywhere gag uncontrollably.

alix, I’m glad you’re happy about Sundin coming to play for the Nucks! I bet the travel schedule is going to be a bitch for him. He’s gonna get a rude awakening!
Fingers crossed for a cab voucher with Matty dressed in a bow.

Ooof. Sorry about that game. It’s just setting Detroit up for thinking they’re better which will only come back to bite them in May. Or something.

:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Well, it’s about time Sharks fans had to remember what it’s like for the rest of us! :P

I don’t ever scoff at anything below 30! That’s just effin’ cold, man!

Yeah! I wasn’t sure at first, but Sundin’s conference call really impressed me. And I was worried he would mess up the chemistry, but the Swedes sound absolutely estatic about him coming, and the other guys too. So, I’m good with it.
And luckily we’re done almost half our road games already. But it should still be quite a shock for the guy! Heh.
Ooof. Sorry about that game.
It’s cool. The Sharks needed to get their asses whooped, if for no other reason, to remind them that they’re not invincible. I just wish it wasn’t at the hands of the Wings.
Well, it’s about time Sharks fans had to remember what it’s like for the rest of us! :P
I know! I hope they’ll learn from it. It was an ugly game. I mean bad, like Steve Buscemi ugly.

For real! Luckily the days aren’t so bad (like 45-50), but the nights are coooold.
I mean bad, like Steve Buscemi ugly.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That is SOME KIND of ugly! :D

No kidding. Dude, Toronto always has such a cushy travel schedule. I mean, most of the teams in the EST zone do, but it seems like Toronto never has to go anywhere. I think last year, when they came out to SJ, it was the first time in something like 7 or 8 years. Special treatment!
And doesn’t Vancouver usually come in around the top 3 in terms of miles travelled by NHL teams in a season? It’s gonna be rough on him!
I mean, most of the teams in the EST zone do
Hey, things are just better out here! :PPPP
Hey, things are just better out here! :PPPP
Hey, how’s that freezing rain treatin’ ya?
Just kidding! I wasn’t trying to knock the EC teams. It’s just a fact of life, they’re all close together!
Hey, how’s that freezing rain treatin’ ya?
*sniff* Just fine, thank you!
Heh. I’m just kidding, too.
Heh. I’m just kidding, too.
I hear ya.
So…I turned down the fantasy trade I was telling you guys about the other day. I just couldn’t give up 2 of my top 5 scorers. Oh well, I’ll just float along with mediocre goalies for a while.
Yo, Ookies. Watching Satan’s minions steal the souls of the Sens on this fine 12/19/08 eve. TV is good.
Turning down the trade was probably for the best, andrew.
TV is good.
Isn’t it, though? :D (There is a new thread for that game; there’s a diary in process.)
Turning down the trade was probably for the best, andrew.
We shall see!
Anyways, I’m outta here. Have a great weekend you guys.

Right back at ‘cha!

Ok, The First Picture Is In My School Book We Are Writing Reports, So I Searched Up Egyptian Mummies And This As Far As I Can See, This Article Or Whatever This Is, Is Pure Non-Sense By The Way In The First Picture They Are Preparing The Mummy So It Can Stay There And Live What They Believed Is Considered “Afterlife” Which Is The Life After Death. They Rap Up The Body And Remove All Organs And Put Them In Special Containers And Only Leave The Heart. The One Preparing The Mummy Is A God (They Worship Many Gods) I Forget His Name Though And By The Way I Am Only Eleven Years Old And I Can Tell By Reading The First Sentence This Is Wrong.
