So, I go to school 3 blocks from the Rock, and I often times walk to a newsstand in the Gateway Center to get a snack. So today, around 3:00 I go and get a snack and as I walk out of the newsstand I see a familiar face getting his shoes shined. None other than Doc. I can’t resist going up and saying congratulations on getting the Foster Hewitt Award and thanking him for being awesome. I’m pretty sure I sounded like a bumbling idiot (much like I do right now) but he was the nicest guy you could ever imagine.
If that wasn’t enough… The Captain making it happen tonight!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I’m not quite sure how to go about picking up a “secondary team” prior to playoffs and considering how our teams are currently positioned in the conference, it seems a bit mean of me to do so. But I have definitely picked up an appreciation for the Devils and their dysfunctions through readership. And I didn’t realize how pretty Parise was until the All-Star game.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet him before and I’ve always shied away after a terrible experience meeting Ken Daneyko, but today for some reason I couldn’t resist. Glad I did cause it made my day…
I had been debating getting a ticket for the game all week but have been really down with the Devils since Pando hasn’t been in the line-up but I’m glad I went. Your post last night kind of inspired me to put aside my Pando fandom. It was a great game and the ceremony was awesome as was the game…

Tim, I’m so glad that you’ve commented tonight! It’s especially nice to hear that we’re not alone in struggling with the Pando Situation. It’s so hard to be genuinely unhappy with the Devils while they’re playing so well, so, like Lou, we all have to make tough decisions sometimes. :D
And more than that, I’m so glad you got to be there for such an awesome game! (Oh, and you had a bad Dano experience? What a total bummer. It’s such a drag when you end up meeting a guy when he’s not being friendly.)

Yeah, I was thinking either the Bs or the Devils, which pretty much makes me the worst fan in history. The really sad thing is, I’ve been cheering for the Devils. And then I realized they were ahead of the Caps in the standings and had a momentary panic attack as if Ovechkin was going to walk in and demand to know WTF I was doing.

He got overexposed. And it got old. I mean, it’s great to be a goofy Russian exchange student when you’re 20. Four years later, the schtick wears a bit thin. Even moreso when I’ve spent the last year being told at every turn how much he invented fun. It’s a lot like the reason so many people say they hate Sid — that they’re just tired of hearing about him. Welp, Ovechkin’s as overhyped now as Sid. Sad but true. In a vacuum I probably wouldn’t have a problem with him.
I can’t really blame AO for everyone trying to attach this ‘hip’ label to him. I guess after having Crosby shoved down their throats for so long, the general NHL viewership started searching for the anti-Sidney. Ovechkin seems to be the masses choice, and thus he gets a little too much credit for ‘having a personality’. Compared to Sidney, a woodchipper has personality.
I still genuinely like the dude as a player, and he is occasionally funny, but I don’t care how many clubs in Montreal he DJ’s at; he ain’t no rockstar.

Wooooooooo to the devils for beating the penguins! I just watched the highlights on nhl.com with the Pittsburgh announcers. I don’t think you can possibly call an OT goal in a less exciting way than they did.
I think the devils are for real. With Brodeur on the ice, I’m really hoping Montreal won’t have to face you in the first round of the playoffs. NJ is the team that scares me the most with Boston (which kind of makes sense looking at the standings!)

HA! Those guys are such insufferable homers, I can imagine an OT where their team is getting skated off the ice would probably not be their play-by-play forte. Heh. Meanwhile on our feed, it sounded like the top of Doc’s skull was going to just blow right off his head from how excited he was. :D
And Grrrreg, I have to agree with you that right now, the Devils really do look to be for real. Which is why I really wouldn’t mind if we all just pulled up stakes and started the playoffs tomorrow, but with a time-machine Marty coming back from his healthy future to take over. This wouldn’t be the first time I see the Devils peak in January. :P
The Devils have a habit of going on huge winning streaks whenever vets come back from injury. Think about when Patty came back from the hep and all of a sudden we had a 9 game winning streak. A couple of weeks later we had that crazy 12 game streak followed by the Rangers sweep (and after that…I forget what happened. We won the cup right? Right!) Same thing when Langs and Whitey came back: 9 game win streaks. This didn’t happen with Rolston or Holik because they are (relatively) recent additions to the crew and it seems that the more of a team vet you are, the more fired up the boys become when you return from injury.
Keeping this in mind, I fully expect the team to not lose a game for the rest of the season once Marty is back. There is no more tenured veteran on this team them him, and if the Patty, Whitey, Langer formula holds up, we are due for like a 50 game win streak when he comes back. Hell, maybe they will all be shutouts too :D
You know, I was kind of tempering my enthusiasm for the Devils this year, all, “Meh. They’re good, but I don’t have any really high expectations.” But that theory is unassailable. You are SO right, roshacla! If Patty missing half a season led to that better-than-a-Cup (hey, Lou and Marty admitted it!) Rangers sweep, we can only imagine the sheer, unstoppable power of the Devils on a post-Marty high. It’s going to be a whole new dynasty!
