I love it. You better be getting a very nice, long, and sexy interview with Travis.
I felt it in my bones tonight that our boy Travis would score, and boy did he ever!!! Fantastic game. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Travis & Zach. :D
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
That. Was. Awesome.
Almost, as awesome, Steve’s call,
Gel-o: “Shanahan, shot, SCAAAAAARR!!!!”
Silence….
Chico: “19″
Gel-o: No response.
I didn’t even hear the call! I was screaming too loudly at the time. :D
Gel-o: No response.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That is awesome! If I were Travis, I’d be walking on air for weeks knowing that I had scored an NHL playoff OT goal. That shit is so cool. I’d have a button made up that said, “I scored an NHL playoff OT goal” and I’d wear it all summer.
I’d have a button made up that said, “I scored an NHL playoff OT goal” and I’d wear it all summer.
Is that Travis’ form of a plastic star?
“I’d have a button made up that said, “I scored an NHL playoff OT goal” and I’d wear it all summer.”
HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAH!!!! That would be phenomenal!
14 to go.
Baby steps, Tim. Baby steps. Two. Two to go. :P
I’d have a button made up that said, “I scored an NHL playoff OT goal” and I’d wear it all summer.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Travis’s mum is probably already on that.
I’d have a button made up that said, “I scored an NHL playoff OT goal” and I’d wear it all summer.
I think I would too. I think that flies in the face of “act like you’ve been there before,” but who cares. It’s the playoffs.
And some of the pictures from last night’s Devils game are kind of funny. There’s one where Paulie is posing on one knee over a prone Staal like a hunter posing with the animal he just shot. And there’s another one where it looks like Marty is hugging Ruutu.
There’s one where Paulie is posing on one knee over a prone Staal like a hunter posing with the animal he just shot.
Oh, did we forget to mention that happened in the game? It was pretty crazy. We were sure Paulie would get a penalty, but the officials were just like, “Meh. It’s Hooters. We can’t blame Paulie.” :P
Good morning, everyone! Happy Monday!
I enjoyed watching Zach try and squash Travis after the OT goal.
Hi,
My favorite part of that OT goal was Chico saying that Zach would get a penalty for leaving his feet.
I’ve been lurking for a while and just wanted to add that IPB has the best game threads.
Zach’s flying goal celebration was just fantastic! And yeah, that was so funny that Chico was so giddy about it that he cracked about him leaving his feet. What a satisfying, surprising OT! I’m still kind of in shock!
And hi, Anita! Thanks so much for the kind words — the folks around here really do make for great game threads, don’t they? Y’all are the bestest! :D
Val and I declared the game over when it went to OT. We quit. Finally, we were wrong to shut it off, and it felt good!
Val was checking online and was like “Oh dear…” and I knew they won!
You guys turned the game off, Pam? That’s hardcore! I was convinced the OT was merely a formality, but I was grudgingly watching it. And they showed me! :P
Yea, we couldn’t take it. We decided late in the 3rd that if they couldn’t win in regulation, then they couldn’t win. I could not bear to see Erik Cole’s butt ugly mug celebrating, so we didn’t watch. We were just saying recently how everytime we declare a game “over”, we’re always right. Well, not last night!
Val’s like “It says 3-2 Devils…” Which led to some awkward high fiving and woo-hooing, then the TV went back onso we could bask in the postgame for a little.
Chico was so giddy
Does it really take all that much to make Chico giddy? Basically, he hyperventitales at, well, almost everything.
Does it really take all that much to make Chico giddy? Basically, he hyperventitales at, well, almost everything.
True, true. Heh.
Which led to some awkward high fiving and woo-hooing, then the TV went back onso we could bask in the postgame for a little.
See, if we’d turned the game off, seeing the final would have led to all kinds of screaming and recriminations, as we all pointed fingers at which one of us made the “let’s turn the game off” call.
The decision was mutual, so there were no hard feelings!
Because secretly both of us were praying that we would be pleasantly surprised.
Because secretly both of us were praying that we would be pleasantly surprised.
Sneaky! I’m impressed the Hockey Gods didn’t see through that!
That Down Goes Brown guy (Leafs blog) said, “I would marry a man made of playoff OT.”
Playoff OT is the most tense and exciting thing about hockey. Even when it’s not your team, it’s almost too hard to watch. That one goal means about 20 different things.
Oh I know. Especially in person. I almost swallowed a ThunderStick back in 2003 before Grant Marshall sent the Lightning home.
“I would marry a man made of playoff OT.”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s so true! Playoff OT is basically the coolest thing around. And yeah, it’s brutal even when you don’t care… Fortunately, the Devils are historically TERRIBLE in OT, so I’m not normally wrapped up in OT hopes and dreams for my primary team. Heh.
Val and I declared the game over when it went to OT. We quit. Finally, we were wrong to shut it off, and it felt good!
If you had DirecTV, the choice to shut the game off in OT would have been made for you. Thanks to the ongoing no MSG HD, I was forced to watch on Carolina’s HD channel that apparently came to life due to demand from Canes fans (who knew they existed :P). OT starts, the game goes to a DirecTV logo and I miss what was actually a good end to an OT playoff game for once.
My game summary: I’m still not sold on Rolston, Holik apparently learned nothing about not taking stupid penalties, Zach and Travis are great and Brodeur was good. Also, Oduya was good and Havelid is not.
I got that DirecTV logo, too! I had to switch to Carolina’s standard feed. After I panicked for a few minutes first, of course.
OT starts, the game goes to a DirecTV logo and I miss what was actually a good end to an OT playoff game for once.
Dude, I can NOT believe that happened. We had a game we were watching on Center Ice flip off a few days ago, but it was being picked up on Versus, so it wasn’t a problem. I am HORRIFIED that DirecTV turned our game off!
And I agree 100% with your game summery, Mike. I was especially annoyed about the Holik situation when Sutter wouldn’t admit he’d benched him for the most part after that penalty, and instead was all, “Uh, the other team was rolling three lines, so that’s what we did too.” GAH! JUST BENCH HIM!!!
Mike, I have DirecTV, and we happily watched in glorious high def last night.
I hate Blobby so much.
PS – Travisnation, what’s the ruling on his facial hair? I’m kinda digging it!
*Except for OT…we didn’t watch, but I have no reason to believe the feed was off
Travisnation, what’s the ruling on his facial hair? I’m kinda digging it!
I dunno. It looks like early-round facial hair. It’s awfully hard to judge anyone a week in.
That Down Goes Brown guy (Leafs blog) said, “I would marry a man made of playoff OT.”
Well, yes, until you think of some of the guys who have actually scored in playoff OT, and who you would be hitching yourself TO. Then, it becomes much, much, less appealing. I mean, we’ve already determined that Patty was the only sane one of the former A-Line and yet, for example, it would mean Jason Arnott, who scored the OT goal to win the Cup for NJ in 2000. Not that I’m not grateful, but, he’s clearly not quite sane and, with that facial structure, won’t age well.
You have to consider these things. For Ranger fans, it might mean….Matteau. I know we aren’t fond of them, but would you do that to them?
Playoff OT is basically the coolest thing around.
I especially love (and hate) the multi-OT game. Love it! (And hate it!)
*Except for OT…we didn’t watch, but I have no reason to believe the feed was off
That’s when it happened. Just after OT started. Fortunately it was just the HD feed that bailed.
Bummer about the feed.
I dunno, I guess I kinda like scrubby, stubbly Travis
until you think of some of the guys who have actually scored in playoff OT and who you would be hitching yourself TO
Hmm….looking at the Sabres last two playoff seasons and their OT games, I’d be hitched to Drury, Briere, Max and Pommers. Can I divorce them all but keep Pommers as a pet?
I wasn’t going to marry an actual OT goal-scorer. I would marry the playoff OT itself. :D
I wasn’t going to marry an actual OT goal-scorer. I would marry the playoff OT itself.
Well, that’s a small misunderstanding. :)
My brain is fried right now.
I agree Chico is a hyperventilator, but that ‘Canes crowd could’ve used a big ass little brown bag to breathe into last night. What a rowdy loud winded bunch. They whooped at everything- line changes, commercial breaks, frozen lemonade vendors. Is hockey too stimulating for the Carolinas (the citizens of not a collective of women so named) ?

Heh. I was saying to Pookie at one point as the fans were in full, aggrieved roar over a perceived slight of some kind, I really admire Carolina fans for their enthusiasm, but the sophistication level of the crowd is… well… a bit lacking. Of course, Montreal fans are just as bad, so maybe that’s something Hurricanes fans should be proud of?
My brain is fried right now.
Mine too. I should know better than to come to work on Mondays.
I should know better than to come to work on Mondays.
Nothing good ever comes of it.
Nothing good ever comes of it.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::: No, it really doesn’t. And especially not during the playoffs. I mean, I’m sleep-deprived, emotionally wrung out, running out of stuff to read on the interwebs, and generally distracted. We can’t be expected to WORK this time of year, can we?
Good point. I like Habs games b/c the collective cheer/ groan/ sigh of so many Canadian fans is a unique part of those Centre Bell games. At times it is like one voice. It’s impressive how 15000+ become so connected to the on ice action.
The ‘Cane’s fans do not lack in volume but do lack the collective organization of thier general crowd noise. It’s a rolling undulating cheer. Almost as if they seem to be under the spell of a few snoots of white lightening- not that I grudge their enthusiasm or the benefits of a home distillery. Maybe the subdued enthusiasm of the Devil’s crowds makes me sensitive to these things (as if cheering were flourescent light bulbs, causing me headaches and mild psychosis…)
You make a great distinction, Stalky. Habs fans are delusional, but as one. Canes fans are definitely much more scattershot in their approach.
Maybe the subdued enthusiasm of the Devil’s crowds makes me sensitive to these things (as if cheering were flourescent light bulbs, causing me headaches and mild psychosis…)
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: And yeah, I guess I’m a Devils fan through-and-through. I find excessive cheering totally unseemly. It just makes you look needy, fans! You have to play a little hard to get, otherwise your team will think they don’t have to work hard to keep your love. :P
I would marry the playoff OT itself. :D
Right.
HAHAHA! That’s it. The drunken lurch and teeter of the constantly cheering fan will only lead to the short term unsatisfying relationship. There needs to be some tension, some sort of open eyed pragmatism that the regular season and first round are enjoyable, but it’s not the time for wearing a lampshade and dropping your pants. Save the exposure of your cash and prizes until Motts is openly weeping on the ice with his lips pressed to side of that trophy…
One unique thing has been noticed about Canes games, apparently, it’s about the only place in the state where you will find the following sitting next to each other, semi-politely for any amount of time: Duke, Carolina and NC State fans.
So, it serves a purpose other than keeping Cam Ward and a Staal brother off the streets.
Save the exposure of your cash and prizes until Motts is openly weeping on the ice with his lips pressed to side of that trophy…
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Exactly! If other fans want to be cheap and easy, that’s their choice. I’m not going to judge them. Too harshly.
The insane amazingness of that picture is beyond description! I love it! TravisNation is in a state of uproarious exultation!
Oh, and do you remember the hockey fan over at Japer’s Rink that capriciously angered the Hockey Gods by claiming the Caps had their favour? He’s written another post:
http://www.japersrink.com/2009/4/20/844444/an-emotional-defensive-lockdown
I should know better than to come to work on Mondays.
Not to gloat or anything, but my new class schedule has Mondays free. I should have Communication Science at 13:45, but I’m clearly far too Machiavellian for my own good. (“But please Timetable Lady, I have 3 hrs of field hockey practice on Monday morning! I can’t possibly be expected to be even remotely cognisant after that! Please put me in the Tuesday class instead *puppy eyes*”)
I agree with your sentiments about the Carolina crowd. At least they were very into it though, I think I prefer that over a mausoleum.
Mags, you’re a scheduling MASTERMIND! I’m so impressed!
And Kellyn, I saw that post on Japer’s. I love that somewhere in there, he wonders what on earth Caps fans did to deserve this awful fate. I’m like, “Have you bothered going back and re-reading your last post?” :P
I love that somewhere in there, he wonders what on earth Caps fans did to deserve this awful fate. I’m like, “Have you bothered going back and re-reading your last post?” :P
Along with his last post, most of the posts Caps fans have made on Twitter. They were warned from all sides, but they wouldn’t listen. Almost sad. Almost.
I just looked at that Japer’s Rink post and I think I’m still stuck on the whole Caps-proved-they-were-legit-cup-condenders thing. Dude, your starting goaltender this year was Jose Theodore. On what planet does a legit cup contender have goaltending that bad?
Also, is it just me or is this collapse not all that “shocking” or “stupendous”? I mean, I expected the Caps to win but I’m not surprised to see the Rangers ahead.
Dude, your starting goaltender this year was Jose Theodore. On what planet does a legit cup contender have goaltending that bad?
Seriously! I’ve seen so many series previews from Caps bloggers where they were like, “Since when do the Rangers have the edge in goal? Jose’s a PROVEN WINNER!” And I’m like, “I don’t think ‘proven winner’ means what you think it does.”
I agree that it’s really not all that surprising. I mean, I would never have picked the Rangers to win, but I’m hardly going to be stunned if they do. It’s really a terrible match-up for the Caps — they couldn’t have invented a better team for exposing each and every chink in their armor.
Almost sad. Almost.
Heh. Yeah, I don’t have a lot of sympathy. There seems to be a prevalent mentality in the Capsogosphere that just believing your team is going to win the Cup is the same as actually winning it. The Hockey Gods don’t like that kind of thinking. :D
Jose’s a PROVEN WINNER!”
A proven winner at what? The race to fail a drug test via use of Propecia?

If the Rangers do win, it’s going to do very interesting things to the standings in a lot of fantasy pools.

Yeah, I think that one might do a bit of damage to my Frisby Bowl picks, but if the Sharks can’t figure Hiller out, it’ll all be moot for me anyway.

Eek. I’ve missed these because I mostly avoid the Caps blogosphere. Did they miss the whole thing where Lundqvist usually spends part of the season being a disaster and the rest of the year being awesome (which is weird in and of itself, but still…) while Jose has just spent most of the time post-lockout being a disaster? Dude had a .900 save percentage this year.
if the Sharks can’t figure Hiller out, it’ll all be moot for me anyway.
Yeah, I have the Sharks winning the Cup in FrisbyBowl. That might be a big old oops for me.
“A proven winner at what? The race to fail a drug test via use of Propecia?”
The race to be the first NHLer to disgrace the sport of hockey by puplicly cavorting with ‘celebutante’ Paris Hilton? The pictures (there are picture!) of that are burned indelibly in my poor, wasted little mind.
but the sophistication level of the crowd is… well… a bit lacking
Keep in that they’re probably NASCAR fans too. That should explain everything.
That might be a big old oops for me.
Hee! You can sit over here with me if that happens. In the Oops Corner. Sigh. :P
Hi!
I have a vital question for Mags, if she’s still here. How do you keep up with the playoffs games? Do you stay up to watch them, do you go to bed early and wake up in the middle of the night? I never know what to do, and I often end up watching at least the beginning of the game before going to sleep. Which means I stay up until at least 2 or 2.30 AM. My mornings are tough after that.
The playoffs are killing me. Literally. It’s a good things the habs won’t last 3 rounds, because I don’t know how my body could keep up with so many sleepless nights. Maybe cocaine is the way to go.
Maybe cocaine is the way to go.
I don’t think there’s any question that that’s the right solution. And one this year’s Habs roster would probably whole-heartedly approve of! :P
Maybe cocaine is the way to go.

Just say yes to drugs!
I don’t think there’s any question that that’s the right solution. And one this year’s Habs roster would probably whole-heartedly approve of! :P
Oh my god you’re so right! The habs should give away drugs to their fans, instead of towels, shirts or thundersticks this year! That’s the only way to get everyone to forget how shitty the centennial season has been.
Do you stay up to watch them, do you go to bed early and wake up in the middle of the night?
That one. I’ve not been so good at it this year though, I keep falling asleep in the middle of the games. I’ve missed both of the Devils OTs, for example. I haven’t really solved that problem yet. I used to shift my sleep schedule up 6 hours to EC time, but I have morning classes this year which makes that impossible.
Maybe cocaine is the way to go.
Isn’t cocaine a downer as opposed to an upper though? XTC might be better. There’d be a lot of “OMG I want to DO that play”… Not that that’s out of the ordinary here ;)
Isn’t cocaine a downer as opposed to an upper though?
Nope, it’s a stimulant. That’s why so many hard-partying celebrities are all over it.
Nope, it’s a stimulant. That’s why so many hard-partying celebrities are all over it.
Aha! Well, that makes sense.
That’s why so many hard-partying celebrities are all over it.
And also Bob Probert.
Habs fans are delusional, but as one.
Completely unrelated, I feel the fucking Habs are winning tonight!
Hey there, Andrew. How about them Sharks?
How about them Sharks?
Hmmm…not cool Meg.
I feel the fucking Habs are winning tonight!
They’re due for one!
Also unrelated, I’m going to have to become a Vancouver/Chicago fan for the remainder of the playoffs. It’s unfortunate, but necessary.
And also Bob Probert.
I saw someone wrote a “Probie the Coke-Nosed Player” to the tune of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” I don’t remember the words, so this story sucks now.
How about them Sharks?
I’m sorry the Sharks lost last night, andrew. But how cool was it that the three Ducks goals were all scored by players scoring their first ever playoff goal (including Baby Crunchy).
Hmmm…not cool Meg.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. I actually am cheering for the Sharks this year, now that they’ve been de-Soupyed. They can still come back!
(Although I was happy that Baby Crunchy scored.)
But how cool was it that the three Ducks goals were all scored by players scoring their first ever playoff goal (including Baby Crunchy).
Haha, from where I was sitting…not cool. Not cool at all.
I got no love for Drew Miller! He plays for the Ducks! And he won a cup before Ryan!
Andrew, you can help Patty and I out. We were trying to decide the origin of the streamers we saw after the first Sharks goal. Do some of the fans bring streamer guns? Or is that a stadium thing?
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
I figured as much. It’s cool!
They can still come back!
Yeah, no. The Ducks were a tough opponent before Hiller decided to make like the second coming of Terry Sawchuk. Pair that with an 0 for 12 powerplay and I think it might be too much to come back from.
Do some of the fans bring streamer guns? Or is that a stadium thing?
I think it’s the fans. I’ve never seen streamers at a game there, playoff or otherwise.
I think it’s the fans. I’ve never seen streamers at a game there, playoff or otherwise.
That’s what we figured. Don’t worry, I’m not judging. I’m in no position to judge.
That’s what we figured. Don’t worry, I’m not judging. I’m in no position to judge.
Hey it’s cool. Before last night, they hadn’t scored an even strength goal in almost 5 games. I would have had champagne to go with my streamers.
andrew, I am so, so, so sorry. There’s still plenty of Brahms left, though!
The EmperorGod was on NHL Live today. I am watching the replay on NHL.com right now. Unfortunately, so far, he’s following NJ protocol and not saying anything interesting.
I am so, so, so sorry. There’s still plenty of Brahms left, though!
Hey! It’s all good! Like I said, I’m hitching my wagon to the Canucks and Blackhawks! It’s gonna be awesome! (of course I’ll still be at game 5…hoping, praying.)
And how about those Devils? Congrats on the win! I don’t want to jinx it or anything, plus it’s still early, but I told you they were primed for a bit of a playoff run! (and I almost called it for game 2! I just had my 2-1 prediction backwards)
Before last night, they hadn’t scored an even strength goal in almost 5 games. I would have had champagne to go with my streamers.
If the Habs win tonight, I might have to break out whores and blow. Lord knows they will.

Haha! Yes, the hookers and blow cupboard has been sadly underused this playoff season so far.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Hookers and blow? Soldering iron. Hookers and blow? Soldering iron. Decisions, decisions..
Well, I have to say, based on that interview, Travis is a boring Emperor-God. He refuses to go to the movies with Marty and thinks the Rangers are playing well. Other than that, it was practically, “Just got to play ‘em one at a time”.
Hookers and blow? Soldering iron. Hookers and blow? Soldering iron. Decisions, decisions…
The soldering iron is working overtime! I think I burned the motor out on mine.
Can anybody spare an eyejab? I just need one more…
Yes, the hookers and blow cupboard has been sadly underused this playoff season so far.
I’ve had to go back to the store for more hookers and blow.
But Travis is an adorable prairie boy boring Emporer God.
Can anybody spare an eyejab? I just need one more…
Pencils to the eardrum. That’s what gets me through a day at work sometimes.
I’ve had to go back to the store for more hookers and blow.
Wow. Weren’t we just discussing how you can’t even buy beer at the store in PA?
The Rangers might be giving their fans Tunderstix for tonight’s game. Oh, joy. Oh, bliss.
This just became my favorite picture of Zach.
