This week Pookie worked the late shift at the reference desk on Monday instead of Wednesday. And so it was that Boomer and Schnookie found themselves sitting in the living room at stately IPB Manor for hours on end this evening, bored out of their gourds. Why, oh why, can’t it be the hockey season yet!?
How Much Longer Can We Go On Like This?

What happened to gardening? Is summer the season for Living??
The gardening is great! We’ve had quite the bounty so far of potatoes and garlic, with onions coming along soon, and we’ve picked our first few tomatoes just in the last couple of days. Of course, the garden is totally self-sufficient this summer, what with all the rain, so it’s been a very passive hobby for us. Summer seems to be the season for sitting around and wishing Living involved a bit more hands-on work. :P
Hmm…so all the fun and excitement lies with Pookie!
Oh, the garden is going fabulously! But with all the rain we had, we didn’t spend a lot of time in it in June and the first-half of July. I think we all felt very disconnected from it. But this past weekend we discovered that if you went out there every four hours, you could actually see a difference in how big the beans were growing and in how ripe the tomatoes are getting. So that was cool! We you able to plant anything this year, Liz? (Oh, and sorry about IPB Living not getting updated more often, but there are plenty of pictures of the garden in our Flickr page!)
Hmm…so all the fun and excitement lies with Pookie!
Damn straight!
Hmm…so all the fun and excitement lies with Pookie!
Well, yes. We don’t engage in any of our regular tv plans (or other social ventures) without Pookie, so her late work nights during the off-season are always a case of Boomer and me just sitting around waiting for her to get home. When there’s hockey on we at least have something to watch! It’s so terrible!
I see…Pookie you’re torturing them!
PS – has anyone watched Sandra’s new show, Money Saving Meals? It totally sucks!
The garden photos look great!
has anyone watched Sandra’s new show, Money Saving Meals? It totally sucks!
I’d buy the Money Saving Meal concept a lot more if Miss Thang wasn’t wearing a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace that cost more than what her target audience probably makes in a month.
When there’s hockey on we at least have something to watch! It’s so terrible!
I have been catching up on my reading (mostly history). I just finished one book and I wanted to read more about one of the other people in the book. I was about to go online and order a biography of him. Then I decided to check the stack of books and see if I had already bought it. Sure enough, there it was. Saved myself about $20.
Who are you reading about, Sue?
And yeah, this summer has definitely hit the tedious point. I’ve been reading, watched all of Generation Kill, took up watching Better off Ted, and am still totally bored. Although True Blood is totally the home entertainment highlight of my summer.
I love Money Saving Meals! I mean, it’s no Semi-Homemade, but what is? Semi-Homemade is, like, Rococo in its overwhelming, complete commitment to an all-encompassing aesthetic. You can’t expect Sandra to be able to create an entire second version of that, can you? Heh. What I love about Money Saving Meals is that it’s a total refutation of everything Semi-Homemade stands for. Sandra blithely advises against all of the central tenets of Semi-Homemade every week, as she lays bare exactly now not cheap it is to cook the way she’s been exhorting her fans to all these years (under the guise of Semi-Homemade being less expensive than cooking from scratch). The only thing that makes me sad about Money Saving Meals is that booze is expensive, so all the “cocktails” are virgin. Pfft. Who wants that?
It is funny, but Sandra out of her element just freaks me out! I nearly fell off the couch when she actually whipped her own cream, and she was like “store bought whipped topping is expensive!”
The only thing that makes me sad about Money Saving Meals is that booze is expensive, so all the “cocktails” are virgin. Pfft. Who wants that?
That is a real downer.
Maybe she’ll do us proud and have a “Money Saving” Holiday party hour-long special this winter!
I’ve been reading, watched all of Generation Kill, took up watching Better off Ted, and am still totally bored.
You know it’s a bad summer when it’s actually full of entertainment but still boring. We’re having that problem with Rockford Files. We spent a good hour this past weekend ordering DVDs of other ’70s and ’80s TV shows from the library to see if anything will stick. We’re running out of Columbo! And it’s not even August! (Is this what we get for wishing hockey would go away during the playoffs? Heh.)
Is this what we get for wishing hockey would go away during the playoffs? Heh.
Yes, yes it is.
Maybe she’ll do us proud and have a “Money Saving” Holiday party hour-long special this winter!
Ooh, I hope so! And I’d love to see her do a Halloween special with downscale costume changes.
Yes, yes it is.
Rats. I was hoping you’d say it wasn’t our own damn fault that we’re so bored now. :P
And I’d love to see her do a Halloween special with downscale costume changes.
But at least four or five of these downscale costume changes!
But at least four or five of these downscale costume changes!
It wouldn’t be Halloween without Aunt Sandy having four or five costume changes!
Meg, I was reading “4 Queens, The Provencal Sisters Who Ruled Europe”, it is about Marguerite, wife of Louis IX (France), Eleanor, wife of Henry III (England), Sanchia, wife of Richard of Cornwall, who became “King of the Romans”, which really meant Germany, and Beatrice, who married Charles of Anjou who became King of Sicily.
I have a degree in this stuff but I realized as I was reading the book that I had not read a biography of one of the main people in the narrative – or if I had it had completely been wiped fom my memory – and that was Simon de Montfort, who fought against Henry III and brought the idea of direct election of Parlaiment into being.
After I finish that I move onto “Brotherhood of the Bomb” about the three main developers of the Manhattan Project.
Whoa Sue, that’s quite a summer reading list!
Sounds like interesting stuff, Sue. I’ve been on a fiction kick but thinking of switching to nonfiction for awhile shortly. :)
I was on a breif reading kick but I ran out of thing to read. The last thing I read was C. Vivian Stringer’s biography.
I used to be much more of a reader (mostly nonfiction), but now I’m like, “What are these ‘books’ of which you speak?” I think Patty put it best when she said that she’d read more books, but she’s not done with the interwebs yet. :D
Schnookie, Marty’s bio was the first book I’ve EVER read that wasn’t for a school assignment. And that was what, a few years ago that it came out. As an engineering student, I’m not much of a reader.
My “reading kick” was four more books since that one!
I was a pretty solid reader (52 books a year was my average [but that included romance novels]) back in the day, but then I discovered spending my lunch hour on the computer reading blogs meant I didn’t have to sit in the staff room listening to other people’s conversations and the television while trying to read a book. So goodbye books!
Not reading books has done wonders for my job as a librarian, believe you me. When ever people ask for reading recommendations based on what I read, I’m like, “Um… Puck Daddy? Look at that hobo!”
When ever people ask for reading recommendations based on what I read, I’m like, “Um… Puck Daddy? Look at that hobo!”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::
That’s great!
I had a stack of books that I wanted to read sitting there so I decided to take advantage of the sad time of the year – no hockey, no free-agent drama, etc., to read them.
After I finish that I move onto “Brotherhood of the Bomb” about the three main developers of the Manhattan Project.
That sounds really interesting. I kind of want to read “The Right Stuff” about the first astronauts. And “Moneyball” is on the list, especially after I heard that Aaron Sorkin is tweaking the script for the movie version.
Amy, “Brotherhood of the Bomb” was supposed to be next, until Simon sidetracked me.
My Dad enjoyed it, he’s the one who gave me the book. Apparently, they are all slightly nuts.
I haven’t read “Brotherhood of the Bomb” but if you’re interested in that kind of stuff, you might like “Tuxedo Park”, which is about Alfred Loomis. Ack! Look at that! I remembered a book I read and was able to properly recommend it based on subject matter! If only my boss could see me now! I recommended something other than “The Three Musketeers” and “King Leopold’s Ghost”! :D
I just read that Sandra Lee is going to have 4(!) holiday specials airing this year on HGTV. This could either be amazing or a trainwreck of epic proportions.
Good morning IPB. Glad to see that hockey withdrawls are reaching critical mass. Same here.
Just finished reading Food, Inc. We went and saw the movie a few weeks back, so I thought I would check out the book as well. It’s a big collection of essays, very good stuff. Just started “Stranger from Paradise: A Biography of William Blake”. I love William Blake, the crazy bastard.
This could either be amazing or a trainwreck of epic proportions.
Or both! Amy…that’s the most exciting news I’ve heard all summer! Sandra, crossing over to HGTV? Move over, Candace Olson!
I haven’t read “Brotherhood of the Bomb” but if you’re interested in that kind of stuff, you might like “Tuxedo Park”, which is about Alfred Loomis.
Wow, books on science military history and our library has both. I may have to check them out. I am found of science/engineering history. One of my favorite books is the history of the pencil. Guess its an engineering thing.
OK can’t spell. That would be fond of science/ engineering history.
Hey Myra’s Hub, engineers are the best! I want to read Timoshenko’s History of Strength of Materials, but I can’t get myself to give up $22 for it. Plus, Val would inevitably make fun of me.
I haven’t read “Brotherhood of the Bomb” but if you’re interested in that kind of stuff, you might like “Tuxedo Park”
Thanks, Pookie, I will recommend it to my Dad and get him started on it, since he’s probably got a few other things to read, by the time we go to Maine in mid-September, I should inherit it from him!
You know what else is a good book? “Heat” by Bill Buford. It’s the story of him working in the kitchen at one of Mario Batali’s NYC restaurants. It’s a very entertaining read.
Pam,
I understand, I gave the pencil book to my cousin the PhD NASA engineer and Myra still makes fun of me for that.
One of my favorite books is the history of the pencil.
That sounds awesome! (Also, the “science/engineering” bit excuses you from the spelling errors, I think! Me? I have no excuse.)
Glad to see that hockey withdrawls are reaching critical mass. Same here.
I really thought I was going to do okay based on how much I enjoyed last summer and how much I didn’t enjoy the last Devils season. But… Not so much.
I just read that Sandra Lee is going to have 4(!) holiday specials airing this year on HGTV.
EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! I’m with Pam — that’s the best news I’ve heard all summer! I can’t wait!!! I hope one is a Semi-Homemade Thanksgiving in which she tells her viewers to use pre-made mashed potatoes because they’re so cheap and easy, and then another is a Money Saving Meals Christmas in which she says to mash your own potatoes because the pre-made stuff is too expensive and making your own tastes better, too. Heh.
Myra’s Hub, Val (my sis) says I’m dork whenever I do something like order a plate theory book from Dover! But she’s just as bad! She’s a molecular biology dork, and I’m a mechanical engineering dork, so we have conflicting dorkisms!
Pookie, I’m hoping for “Tablescapes with Sandy” or “Kitchens by Sandy” where she teaches you to buy a Kitchen Aid artsian stand mixer in ever color to match the window treatments!
Hmmm…my father and brother are both engineers. They may both get the pencil book.
“Heat” may be something I recommend to my family. they are all gourmet cooks as well and enjoy stuff like that.
I am looking forward to the upcoming movie with the dual track themes: Julia Child going to cooking school and the woman decades later who cooks her way through Julia’s entire first book and blogs about it.
She’s a molecular biology dork, and I’m a mechanical engineering dork, so we have conflicting dorkisms!
You two are a couple of smart gals! I myself am what you would refer to as a “movie and music dork”. It’s far less impressive.
I really thought I was going to do okay based on how much I enjoyed last summer and how much I didn’t enjoy the last Devils season.
You know, I have to take back what I said in my last comment. I don’t think I’ll really reach critical mass until preseason starts. Suppose it’s been a mostly calm off season. Keeping busy…a distracted mind is a non-hockey obsessed mind.
Keeping busy…a distracted mind is a non-hockey obsessed mind.
Hmmm. That’s the problem — there just isn’t enough distraction! I need, like, an Olympics or a World Cup. I can’t manufacture my own distractions! :P
Andrew, I forgot “hockey dork”! Val and I see eye to eye on that one!
I need, like, an Olympics or a World Cup.
I would love to take in some olympic diving right now! “Oh no, it’s a tidal wave!”
the woman decades later who cooks her way through Julia’s entire first book and blogs about it.
That was a great book. Just from seeing the previews, I can’t get over how much of Julia Child’s mannerisms and speech that Meryl Streep has down.
I would love to take in some olympic diving right now! “Oh no, it’s a tidal wave!”
How about hockey players doing their best Olympic diving? That would answer the question of who can and can’t swim very quickly.
That’s the problem — there just isn’t enough distraction! I need, like, an Olympics or a World Cup. I can’t manufacture my own distractions!
That’s why I do my summer movie project every year. I get so steeped in cinematic nonsense that I don’t have time to worry about much else. I want to open a Netflix account, but I fear I would never see the light of day again.
I forgot “hockey dork”! Val and I see eye to eye on that one!
For sure. I think everyone here can identify with that one, Pam!
I want to open a Netflix account, but I fear I would never see the light of day again.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I can see how that would be a problem for the likes of you, andrew!
How about hockey players doing their best Olympic diving? That would answer the question of who can and can’t swim very quickly.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! And depending on who it is who can’t swim, it could either be a tragedy or a comedy. :P
I need, like, an Olympics or a World Cup.
I would love to take in some olympic diving right now! “Oh no, it’s a tidal wave!”
Ooh, an Olympics would make this summer pass so much faster.
Hi, IPB! I’m way late!
And so it was that Boomer and Schnookie found themselves sitting in the living room at stately IPB Manor for hours on end this evening, bored out of their gourds.
Bummer! (Are y’all out of Columbo yet?) I’ve ACTUALLY BEEN WATCHING TV. Isn’t that amazing? I haven’t actually watched a full season of TV in years! So I watched True Blood Season 1 and now I’m ripping through Battlestar Galactica one disc at a time.
You two are a couple of smart gals! I myself am what you would refer to as a “movie and music dork”. It’s far less impressive.
:^:::::::::::::::::: It’s okay, andrew, I have a hug for you. I’m in the same boat. I have a stack of Russian history books to be read. Instead, I’m reading comic books. Me so smrt.
I want to open a Netflix account, but I fear I would never see the light of day again.
Er… if you ever want to start that up, I can get you a month free! (And not to be an enabler, but you can totally get the two at a time, limited to four rentals per month option so you don’t go bananas.)
It’s okay, andrew, I have a hug for you. I’m in the same boat. I have a stack of Russian history books to be read. Instead, I’m reading comic books.
Hahaha…yeah, I know the feeling. Although, I did kick my comic book habit to the curb years and years ago. Pretty much around the same time that I discovered girls. Huh…what a strange coincidence! ( I still have all of my old books, in a trunk in a closet. Never getting rid of ‘em!)
Er… if you ever want to start that up, I can get you a month free!
Oh man, I just got my DVR down to a managble 70% full this past weekend. I can barely stay on top of it. If I were to throw a Netflix account in the mix….could be trouble. But if it has to happen, you’ll be the first person to know! Because I’ll be bugging you about that free month.
Excessive 100 degree days have caused me to already reach hockey withdrawal peak mass. I’ve been avoiding doing an actual count of days, but I don’t know if I can put it off much longer.
Hub’s choice of reading material is always interesting but usually way to much work for me. The one on the history of colors (as in pigments) was pretty interesting. I’ll read over his shoulder sometimes but then I end up asking way too many questions. And some of them I’m just completely clueless on and don’t even try. (Marketing/Accounting major/minor here.)
That said, the one of the History of the Pencil still cracks me up.
I’ve been avoiding doing an actual count of days, but I don’t know if I can put it off much longer.
We’re at 57 days until our first pre-season game, but I only know that off-hand because I happened to just read the pre-season dates for the first time, like, ten minutes ago. I’m not sure I’m in full-on countdown mode. Yet. Heh.
I’ll read over his shoulder sometimes but then I end up asking way too many questions.
That reminds me that back in the day, Boomer used to read aloud to the cats. She very slowly slogged her way through a book about the trial of Dr. Mudd (the Lincoln assassination conspirator), making sure the cats were keeping up with her. :P
I hate the preseason so much! I’m sure you Ookies remember the days of being charged full price for those horrendous games.
I love the idea of reading aloud to cats!
I hate the preseason so much! I’m sure you Ookies remember the days of being charged full price for those horrendous games.
Yup! And I remember all too well actually going to all of them. Now that I don’t have to see them in person or pay for them, I gaze wistfully at the preseason schedule and wonder whether MSG will have mercy on us and televise them, though. I mean, by mid-September, I’ll take whatever hockey I can get! (Oooh… I wonder if our cable will have our Flyers game[s?] on it…)
Pretty much around the same time that I discovered girls. Huh…what a strange coincidence!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeah, some girls don’t mind it but I hear most don’t like the comics-thing. :P
Also, if you save all those, they *might* be worth something someday. (You never know. :D)
(I knew I was in trouble when I was watching The Big Bang Theory the other night with friends and Sheldon was talking about his favorite X-Men, so one of my friends looked over and said, “That’s how you put yourself to sleep at night, isn’t it? Ranking your favorite X-Men?”)
That being said, since most comic book guys have not actually discovered girls, I don’t step foot in comic stores. The internet is magic!
Oh man, I just got my DVR down to a managble 70% full this past weekend.
See, and I don’t have a DVR. If I did, my brain would fry from all the stuff I had in line to watch! So it works out. But yeah, Netflix lets me send out free invites to friends to try so anytime you get the urge to try it, just shoot me an e-mail.
That said, the one of the History of the Pencil still cracks me up.
Actually, I’d totally read the History of the Pencil! I’d never really thought about it, but that strikes my fancy!
I look at preseason games as a “sunk cost”. But we’ll try to see our tix at a discount on ticketexchange. No one’s taking those suckers though. That was awesome in the Fall of ’07 when the Rock wasn’t ready so there were no preseason home games.
That was awesome in the Fall of ‘07 when the Rock wasn’t ready so there were no preseason home games.
I liked that too, because they played in Trenton, so we were able to go to a Devils game completely on a whim. Man, I’d go to SO many more games if I could be home within 20 minutes of the final buzzer. :D
Yea, back forth to the Rock can be brutal sometimes. Especially on back to back nights. Now that Val’s going to be working in Newark, we have to devise a new plan for how to manage game nights!
Yeah, some girls don’t mind it but I hear most don’t like the comics-thing. :P
Haha…yeah, I suppose so. I was out of comics waaaay before I met my wife. Although, she’s into most of the comic book movies that we watch. So that’s cool.
See, and I don’t have a DVR. If I did, my brain would fry from all the stuff I had in line to watch!
Oh man, it’s great. I pretty much stick to IFC and Sundance, but I get the craziest stuff. Having Fridays off helps keep the queue managable, but it’s still tough.
So excited, I’m marathoning this Friday…wacthing Chan-wook Park’s Revenge Trilogy in one sitting. That ought to knock out a good 6% of Tivo space.
I look at preseason games as a “sunk cost”.
The nice thing about the Stars is a lot of times they’ll give them away. I don’t know about NOW, per se, but they used to. And even then, pre-season tickets were relatively cheap.
The Devils should, you know, lower prices.

Me too! Boo.
wacthing Chan-wook Park’s Revenge Trilogy in one sitting. That ought to knock out a good 6% of Tivo space.
And totally warp your brain! I have yet to see any of them. I KNOW, I’m terrible. (The trailers for Thirst, have you seen them? Amazing stuff.)
The Devils should, you know, lower prices.
They did!!!!!! Except of course, in my section, where the prices have increased. I wish I were kidding.
Except of course, in my section, where the prices have increased. I wish I were kidding.
Ooh, that happened to Stars ticket holders too and they raised such a fuss that the team president cut them a deal that season – everyone else’s prices lowered but theirs.
And totally warp your brain! I have yet to see any of them. I KNOW, I’m terrible.
I know! I love brain warp! I’ve only seen Oldboy. So the other two should be fun. Trailer for Thirst looks wonderfully messed up.
Except of course, in my section, where the prices have increased. I wish I were kidding.
That is lame! Sorry Pam. I don’t even know what’s going on with Sharks ticket prices. We’ve taken a 15% paycut here, so hockey tickets (and the gas/food/etc that comes along with tem) are fast becoming a luxury.
What they did was change the designation of the areas. Now, all upper bowl seats (except for the very end sections) cost $35 at the box office, or $29 for season tix. So whether you sit center ice or in the corner, it’s the same price, which means the richer people who sat at center ice got a break, and the poorer people in the corner got a hike. Life sucks sometimes. We contemplated moving to center ice, but we have the two of the “best kept secret” seats in the building!
Well, now I’m getting my reading list rounded out…
Myra – what’s the name of the book on the history of colors. THAT sounds fascinating!
Tram

Last time I looked at Sabres pre-season prices, they were pretty cheap compared to regular season tickets. As to lowering prices occasionally, when Mr. G. took over the team, he lowered prices across the board. My uncle was able to move from the nosebleed seats down into the lower bowl for less money than what he was paying in the nosebleeds.
My uncle was able to move from the nosebleed seats down into the lower bowl for less money than what he was paying in the nosebleeds.
How nice! Were the great citizens of Buffalo singing praises to Mr. G for this?
I will say that I do not mind paying the ticket prices for Stars games primarily just because the AAC is so freakin’ nice, especially if you’ve ever been to other facilities in Dallas. The AAC is clean and pretty, plus they have good food.
Now, all upper bowl seats (except for the very end sections) cost $35 at the box office
Those prices are amazing. Not much in the upper bowl seats at GM Place for that kinda cashola. The cheapest nosebleeders are $55.
Well, seriously. maybe I should try being grateful instead!
Were the great citizens of Buffalo singing praises to Mr. G for this?
Yup. It was all fun and games until the day Briere and Drury left. Then, the gloves came off.
It was all fun and games until the day Briere and Drury left. Then, the gloves came off.
That’s a nice way of putting it. I’d say more than just the gloves came off. The wheels completely fell off of the glove delivery truck. And I don’t even know what that means. That’s how bad it was.
Myra – what’s the name of the book on the history of colors. THAT sounds fascinating!
Tram, um, are you serious? If so, I’ll check with Hub to see what it was called.
(Hub, can you remember the name?)
Unfortunately – absolutely serious. Don’t bother though – I went to Amazon and found it – and several others. Yep, I’m a hockey geek and a color and design geek.
Just got back from a client meeting (lovely drive there and back in the pouring rain) and I just wanted to say, great to discuss what to read with you guys today and thanks for the book suggestions.
This is weird. I’m really enjoying this summer without hockey. I barely feel the need to check hockey blogs anymore. Everything is peaceful, I have time for myself, I don’t have to stay awake to watch games in the middle of the night again, and most importantly, the habs are not there to drive me crazy. I am absolutely not missing hockey right now, and I am NOT looking forward to october. It feels great.
Tram,
I think it was “Color: a natural history of the palette” by Victoria Finlay. If I remember correctly is talked about how early painters made their paints.
That’s a nice way of putting it. I’d say more than just the gloves came off. The wheels completely fell off of the glove delivery truck. And I don’t even know what that means. That’s how bad it was.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I just watched a show about cuttlefish. Should I admit that?
Patty, we’re watching “Quincy, M.E.”, so I’m not sure how much better than cuttlefish that is.
And I think “watching a show about cuttlefish” is DEFINITELY a sign that you need hockey RIGHTNOW.
Unless the cuttlefish were playing hockey?
I’d like to see a hockey player do what the cuttlefish do. Start changing colors like mad and waving tentacles at the goalie… The goalie would freeze in confusion and the cuttlefish could score at will!
Yeah, I can’t recommend Quincey. I was there when it was on, and I never watched it. And I watched a LOT of stuff.
Unless the cuttlefish were playing hockey?
The very thought of hockey playing cuttlefish makes my morning better. Hiya, IPB!
we’re watching “Quincy, M.E.”,
I have vague memories of this show and I can tell you I would much rather watch Diagnosis: Murder than that. Ouuuuuuch.
Mornin’ ladies.
first off, the photos are wonderful, hard to believe we have the same camera yet my pics are so much worse.
i used to be a big reader when commuting to nyc. 2 hours a day and i could rack up the books, and working a few blocks from the Strand and i was in heaven. I cant ride the train now without the sounds and smells reminding me of some book i was reading.
i just finished Things the Grandchildren Should Know by Mark Oliver Everett, also known as E from the Eels band. Not the most challenging read, but a great “sunday morning on the porch with a cup of coffee” book. His father was a genius who came up the theory of multiple universes, nice to know that in some parallel universe the Devils won the cup this year.
i had done some history reading, The Founding Fathers and such, but usually stick to the dark humor like Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins, Joseph Heller.
my favorite books though were by early 20th century German authors, Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse – Steppenwolf is in my top 5 and changed my life. Ayn Rand is my other favorite author.
always makes me sad to think most of my favorite authors are dead and wont be writing for me anymore.
and Versus is showing the Devils/Carolina series the past couple days, game 1 was great background noise, game 2 not so much.
Hooray for resigning Travis! Yay!
as far as TV viewing, i highly recommend Mad Men, Season 2 just came out on DVD, great show. and i think we discussed this before, but Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies are also great entertainment.
WOOOOOOOO!!! Acorns for everyone! I knew he wouldn’t go to arbitration! I knew it!
and as far as things to do, theres a make you’re own wine place down the road from me, not too far from IPB, that does some interesting things now and then. Bottle your own balsamic, olive oil, make your own mozzarela, open houses with apps from different restaurants, etc.
If anyone is interested, let me know and i’ll meet you there. as long as my sched fits.
8/13/2009 – Open House – Chocolate Fondue Tasting with Robinson’s Candies
9/19/2009 – Make Your Own Mozzarella
9/19/2009 – Bottle Your Own Premium Olive Oil
9/19/2009 – Bottle Your Own Balsamic Vinegar
http://www.thegrapeescape.net/tge-newsevents.aspx
I wonder how long the deal is. I hope it’s long term.
*Of course in two or three years when he totally bites I’m going to hate them for signing him long term.
KenF, that’s cool. I’d love to do “make your own mozzarella”, but I can’t afford $85! I checked the directions, and that place is 15 minutes from where I live! (7.7 miles)
For some reason i picture Travis, clutching his time-worn blankee, sobbing uncontrollably in arbitration. he just always seems so close to tears.
Last night I had cops on my street. That provided some drama and entertainment until Deadliest Catch came on.
WOO HOOO!!! *Tosses acorns in the air, then immediately regrets it, wishing to have tossed acorn-colored confetti instead*
And Ken, that wine place sounds pretty interesting! Making mozzarella is something I’ve kind of been meaning to do for a while — apparently it’s really easy to do at home. (And thanks about our pictures! :D)
Caitlin, “Quincy, M.E.” is awesome! It’s just hilarious! You should check it out! :P (We’ve got “Diagnosis: Murder” on our list, by the way. I’m really looking forward to it.)
Congrats, Devils fans, on Travis re-signing!
We’ve got “Diagnosis: Murder” on our list, by the way. I’m really looking forward to it.)

Might I also, then, suggest you add some Walker, Texas Ranger to your show watching? I hear that’s a rollicking good time. (I’ve seen precisely one episode.)
Amy, what were the cops doing on your street??? Were they after you? I’m sure that’s it… :P
Might I also, then, suggest you add some Walker, Texas Ranger to your show watching?
Dude, we used to watch that during dinner when I was a kid — or rather, more like a teenager. Our father loved laughing at it.
Zajac has been signed to a multi-year deal. Acorns and block crayons for everyone!
Walker Texas Ranger is ridiculously campy. If you are looking for mindless fun, it’s the ticket. We watched it when it was on to see all the locations and we knew some of the extras. They shot a lot of stuff in our area. In one episode, they blow up a whole neighborhood where one of friends used to live. The airport had bought it out to build a new runway and the show got them to use it for their season ender. That was bizarre to watch.
And that is my story, good morning all!
I didnt check the prices for mozzarella, thats kinda steep for 4-5 balls of cheese. unless you plan on taking that newfound knowledge home to make your own. i’m about 3 miles from there myself.
i’ve made wine there a couple times, and it came out very good. its a nice place, not too big, the owners are very friendly and will take time answering any questions you have. i had expected more of a teaching process, i didnt have enough knowledge to even ask questions, so it was in and out for me. you can bring your own food and make a night out of it. smoke some cigars.
and how about watching Greatest American Hero?
Myra, that’s crazy about your friend’s neighborhood! Now I feel like we should watch Walker, Texas Ranger just to see it! :D
Dude, we used to watch that during dinner when I was a kid — or rather, more like a teenager. Our father loved laughing at it.
My brother-in-law’s mother, who still lives back in France, is a typical French lady — except she IS IN LOVE WITH WALKER, TEXAS RANGER. No lie! I didn’t even know they got it in France! But I can’t believe you’ve seen more episodes of WTR than I have. Heh.
They shot a lot of stuff in our area.
They used to shoot out in the next town over a lot too, so I’d see them fairly regularly on my way to/from school and a lot of kids I went to school with ended up as extras.
The airport had bought it out to build a new runway and the show got them to use it for their season ender. That was bizarre to watch.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Seriously? I never watched the show so I have no knowledge of that. But that sounds awesome!
Ooh, here’s another show suggestion: AMERICAN GLADIATORS. No, I’m not trying to kill you, -Ookies.
what were the cops doing on your street???
We think it was execution of a search warrant. We heard a boom, a thud and lots of yelling. When we looked out the door, the street was crawling with cops. They were taking photos and reviewing the lawn furniture on the one porch.
and how about watching Greatest American Hero?
At least is has a catchy theme song.
What about Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?
Ooh, here’s another show suggestion: AMERICAN GLADIATORS. No, I’m not trying to kill you, -Ookies.
Hey! That’s what we were watching last summer! I knew something was missing this time around. That, and the Olympics. :(
What about Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?
We watched that one during dinner, too. My family? Is pretty dorky. :P
And that is CRAZINESS about the cops, Amy! I hope they kept that lawn furniture in line. I’ve heard some baaaaaad stories about that lawn furniture.
Man you guys watched TV during dinner? We had the TV on as background noise, but we had to sit at the dining room table.
Nowadays, in our apartment, we use our dining room table as a “catch all” and we eat dinner at the coffee table while watching TV!
We did indeed watch TV during dinner, but the flipside was we all always had to eat as a family, no exceptions. The TV basically just served as conversation starter. Dad was big into talking to the TV. Dinnerhour in front of Jeopardy and Entertainment Tonight was where we learned the fine art of snark. :D
I hope they kept that lawn furniture in line. I’ve heard some baaaaaad stories about that lawn furniture.
Heh. I understand why they had to look at the lawn furniture, but I can’t understand why one would keep their illegal elements outside in the elements. If you know what I mean.
We think it was execution of a search warrant. We heard a boom, a thud and lots of yelling. When we looked out the door, the street was crawling with cops.
That happened once at my old house. I was in the backyard working and this helicopter kept circling directly over my head. I looked over the fence out into the street and saw about ten cops, guns drawn, heading for my next door neighbors front door. I waved and promptly headed inside. Turns out they were drug dealers. Didn’t see much of them after that.
Didn’t see much of them after that.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Our neighborhood is so boring! All we get is animal control shooting rabid raccoons next door at midnight on weeknights.
but I can’t understand why one would keep their illegal elements outside in the elements. If you know what I mean.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
When we lived in downtown Princeton we had the “why the hell is that helicopter hovering over our house?” situation, too. Boomer and I were watching hockey and noticed that we’d had to turn the volume way up, because there was so damn much helicopter noise. Finally we got up to look out the window and discovered the police chopper was was basically at the level of our roof, beaming giant searchlights all over our street. Turns out there had been an armed bank robbery two blocks away, and there was an all-out manhunt going on. They were using heat sensors over the graveyard across the street! Pookie was at NYU at the time, so when we called her to tell her our exciting news, she was like, “Wait, no, I’m the one who’s supposed to be living in the dangerous neighborhood…”
Zajac!
All we get is animal control shooting rabid raccoons next door at midnight on weeknights.
Hey, that’s pretty exciting. My neighborhood now is so bland, we don’t even have that.
Turns out there had been an armed bank robbery two blocks away, and there was an all-out manhunt going on.
That’s crazy! Something similar happened when we lived in an apartment downtown years ago. We were going out to dinner and a bunch streets were blocked off, all these unmarked SUVs were flying up and down each block. Found out when we got home that some convicted killer had escaped custody while being transported and they were trying to “reaquire” him.
Found out when we got home that some convicted killer had escaped custody while being transported and they were trying to “reaquire” him.
Dude, that is wild! And awesome. And a bit scary, but still. Ahhh, those were the good old days, too, weren’t they? Back before settling into the sleepy suburbs… :D
one of the most exciting unexpected happenings when i was a kid, was the balloon races used to fly over my father’s house and a balloon had to make an emergency landing in the field.
well, that, and an occassional horse getting loose from the boarders up the road.
and we didnt have a tv growing up, broke when i was 5 and my father believed they were a waste of time. didnt get another till i was 16, did lots of reading back then. read Roots in a week so i could keep up with the kids talking about it at school, not bad for being 11.
We definitely had a tv, but my mother was pretty strict about what we could and couldn’t watch. Looney Toons was on her bad list, and later so was the Simpsons.
Our reading really wasn’t restricted though. We could pretty much read whatever we liked.
We weren’t allowed to watch the Simpsons either! Or read Berenstein Bears (obviously when we were younger…), for the same reason — our dad hated the “bumbling father” character. Of course, the moral of the story is that you should never ban a TV show for your family until you actually watch it; when I started watching Simpsons in college (I felt like such a rebel) I was shocked to discover that Dad would probably have found it hilarious. (I can’t say the same for Berenstein Bears…)
My supervisor here at work won’t watch the Simpsons because she doesn’t like the attitude of the kids on the show. Yet there she is, every week extolling the virtues of American Idol. No attitude on that show. Nosiree.
Yeah, we had the old school rabbit ear antennae on our t.v. as kids. So we had one, but it got 3 or 4 channels till I was probably 13 or 14. Looking back, that was definitely a good thing.
Yet there she is, every week extolling the virtues of American Idol.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I feel like we watched TONS of TV as kids, but looking back, we almost never watched TV alone. It was always family time, piled up in front of the boob tube, learning from our parents how to talk back to the screen. Heh. (I still remember how uncomfortable the rug in our family room was, and the way it left the impression of the pattern of the pile on your arms and legs. Huh. I’m suddenly so glad I’m a grown-up and don’t have to cede the TV-watching chairs to my parents anymore. :P)
I can’t think of anything offhand that I was allowed to watch…As for books, I never wanted to read anything anyway!
I can’t imagine not having a TV!
I remember briefly having that wood paneled box thing with the buttons that was connected to the TV by a wire. It was like an ancient remote.
PS I meant “wasn’t” allowed to watch!
we almost never watched TV alone
On the rare occasions that I’m alone in the house during a time when I want the tv on (I can’t stand having non-sports tv on during the daytime unless it’s Sandra Lee), watching shows by myself feels weird and exotic. And lonely. And very, very different. It’s like watching tv alone and watching tv with friends are completely different activities or something.
As for the Simpsons, it cracks me up when people object to it on moral grounds because at it’s core, it’s really sweet and often (at least in it’s glory days) showed a really gentle, family-friendly look at how kids and parents interact. The episodes where Lisa and Homer find common ground and bond are some of my favoritest episodes ever. And anyone who objects to how Bart acts should be forced to watch the episode where he sells his soul.
My supervisor here at work won’t watch the Simpsons because she doesn’t like the attitude of the kids on the show.
Yeah, we weren’t allowed to watch that because the kids were disrespectful to grown ups. I don’t think my mother would much enjoy it even now though. Looney Tunes was the cavalier attitude toward death and violence (and that the characters weren’t nice to each other).
A lot of our tv time was family time as well. I distinctly remember watching Life Goes On when I was little. My brother had just been born so of course my family was watching the show where a main character had Down Syndrome. Of course it’s a bit funny that we weren’t allowed to watch Looney Tunes but did get to watch a show that featured a high school character who had gotten HIV from a one night stand.
I can’t think of anything offhand that I was allowed to watch
Same here. I think I just had to leave the room if “controversial” content came on the show.
Pookie, daytime TV bites doesn’t it? Like when you stay home sick, there’s nothing to watch except Robin Miller making a week’s worth of nasty food.
People don’t like the Simpsons because the family dynamics can be awkwardly true. Moreso than your average lame ass sitcom, which are never even close to reality.
Amy, I meant “wasn’t”. But I think I was too sheltered and dorky to watch anything too bad, so my parents didnt worry about it!
Like when you stay home sick, there’s nothing to watch except Robin Miller making a week’s worth of nasty food.
It’s not just the content of daytime tv. I just feel weird when the television is on during day light hours, even if I’m watching a movie I love. I can’t really explain it.
I know what you mean about watching TV alone. It’s just…weird.
Okay, so 4 yrs for Travis
I love watching t.v. by myself! If only because I can put on my choice of any nasty, scary, gory movie that Tracie won’t watch with me.
I don’t remember being too censored on t.v. as a kid. But then again, we were usually outside playing. We watched t.v. as a family in the evenings quite a bit.
center Travis Zajac can now look forward to the 2009-10 season — and his wedding coming up next month in Winnipeg rather than worry about an arbitration hearing on Friday.
Wait, what?
Four years?! Sweet! Nicely done, Lou and Travis!
WOO HOO! I like the sound of a four-year deal for Travis!
Max gets to watch all of the hockey he wants on tv.
Seriously, he likes to watch Sesame Street, the Weather Channel, and some sports, but his attention span is still too short for even a half hour show. Max will get up in the middle of whatever he’s watching and say, “I turn off the tv.” and do so.
I meant “wasn’t”. But I think I was too sheltered and dorky to watch anything too bad, so my parents didnt worry about it!
I think I read your statement as “wasn’t” so I got what you meant.

Does anyone else feel like their favorite players have gone into hibernation?
Hey, my favorite player just signed a 4-year extension! WOO HOOOO!
great, now we get to watch Sophmore Travis for 3 years and Third Year Travis in year 4. heheh.
good signing, glad Lamoriello did it.
my favorite player just signed a 4-year extension! WOO HOOOO!
Maybe he can shame his UND teammate into signing an extension with the Sabres. Heh.
It just seems like this year is exceedingly quiet in terms of hearing about what fun and frolic the players are having during their summer vacations.

It just seems like this year is exceedingly quiet in terms of hearing about what fun and frolic the players are having during their summer vacations.
This is definitely true, but I do have to admit, I don’t think any of the Devils earned fun and frolic. If I find out any of them are funning and frolicking when they SHOULD be either working out furiously with the intent of making themselves strong enough to play for an ENTIRE season instead of just 5/6ths of one, or hanging their heads in shame while wearing sackcloth and ashes, there will be hell to pay!
Yeah, I’m pretty sure the Sabres are actually enjoying fun and frolic but want us to believe they’re working hard.
Yeah wait what? Travis is getting married?
the soon-to-be Mrs Travis

KenF, :^:::::::::::
I had no idea Travis had signed. This is what happens when you have to deal with business partners and clients. Damn.
So, Travis is getting married. I wonder if the fiancee told him, “We have wedding plans and this is interfering. The constant calls from your agent are not in the list I have (looks at it, reads) flowers, caterers, music, guest list, gift registry, rehersal dinner, chapel, do you see what I’m saying? Time for dealing with your agent isn’t on here. Sign the contract!”

You may want to avoid today’s Puck Headlines post on Puck Daddy. Marty’s going golfing.
*Through gritted teeth* I saw that. There will be hell to pay!
Marty’s going golfing.
But, leaving out the occasional weirdness in Marty’s personal life, isn’t this (OK, forgive me for this…) par for the course with Marty?
Think about Marty’s general schedule, in and out of season:
Eat, practice, eat, play, eat, reproduce, eat, golf, eat, practice, eat, practice, eat, play, eat, golf, eat, reproduce, etc…
OK, he had to sleep in there somewhere. But, he was golfing before, good times and bad.
I just had a thought that Matty can have open air taxi threesomes now he’s in Tampa. Lols.
I’m so distraught Travis is getting married. I thought that adorable prairie dullard was waiting for me to decide I actually want to get married. *Sigh* Oh well. Is Paulie single? We can live happily ever after and have a bunch of pot brownie babies.
I just had a thought that Matty can have open air taxi threesomes now he’s in Tampa.
Well that certainly explains why he signed so quickly with them!
And I don’t really know much about the marital availability of the Devils. I figure it doesn’t much matter, because they would all happily cast aside whatever romantic companions they might already have as soon as they met me. :P

Two more, and Garth Snow can field an entire forward line and defensive pairing of all goalies. Maybe that’s his new strategy for the Isles this year? Of course, it will all fall apart when DiPietro tears his Achilles tripping over the blue line.
Wow, Islanders just signed Biron. One year. Guess you can never have too many goalies.
Or, we can expect a Pretty Ricky retirement annoucement soon. Apparently, the owner is going to be on WFAN tomorow afternoon. I thought it was because they had just fired their radio broadcast team, or just because he felt like blathering for a few minutes with one of the many hosts who know nothing about hockey and won’t ask him difficult questions.
Now, I really wonder, is Pretty Ricky out for the year, again? Is he done?
I’m way late to the party, but I have a spider-silk connection to Walker, Texas Ranger, too! When I worked for Blockbuster, we were in a warehouse area and across the back-door parking lot was the back door of another one and inside were offices for the show in it’s first couple of years. They filmed in there occasionally. Once they had a “garage sale” of sorts when they moved and the sold off a room full of props and such. I bought a floor lamp! So I have a ratty vintage floor lamp that was used in an episode. I never watched the show, though, so I don’t know which episode. And that’s my story.
its. not it’s. This lack of hockey is making me LOSE it!
Wow, 162 (now 163) comments on a blog post about why you’re bored. Awesome. No gardening for me this year. Impending roof repairs (which are now put off ’til next year) kept me from spending any time planting, since I expected it would just be trampled by workers. Thinking about a fall crop or two in our pots, though.
