1-2-3 Hockey: 9 of 39
It was perfect weather today — dry and little bit cool (leading into bona fide chilly in the evening), and when I left work the sky was just incredible. I stopped for corn at the farm stand and snapped a couple of pictures. –Schn.

I’m loving this chilly night!
Wasn’t it just delicious weather last night? I walked to work this morning and was shocked — shocked! — that the leaves were still green.
And good morning, everyone! Happy September! We did it! We survived the summer summer months; now all we have to do is make it through one more fake summer month and we’re home free!
Fall is definitely in the air and I like it. There’s only 12 more days until the first Sabres practice of the new season. I think I can last that long, right?
There’s only 12 more days until the first Sabres practice of the new season. I think I can last that long, right?
Oh my god! That’s, like, NOTHING! And y’all get to go to practices and stuff, right? EEEE! Hockey’s practically here again!!!
I think the rookies report in even less than 12 days…
(PS Ookies, I spent like half an hour last night going through your “cats of maple hoo” set on flickr)
I can totally survive 12 days! The next four are all about anticipating my birthday, and then it’s a 3-day weekend, so that knocks off almost half of those 12 days! Sweet!
Pam, I hope our cats were sufficiently cute models! (Other than kitten-era Favre. He was hideous.)
We were loving the cats. It’s funny, Favre was not a cute kitten, but I love him as a full grown cat! Val and I both agreed that Matsui is our favorite cat of Stately Manor.
Matsui is definitely the most photogenic. She’s also a camera hog. And yeah, Favre was a classic Ugly Duckling. I’m sure we’ve mentioned that the only reason we got him was because the guy ahead of us on the list for ragdoll kittens decided Favre was so ugly that he’d wait months until the next litter was born in the hopes of getting a less ugly kitten. His loss. (We probably would have made the same choice is we weren’t so disinterested in ever having to go back to the crazy breeder’s house. Favre was just that ugly. The pictures don’t do the ugliness justice.)
He’s a ragdoll cat? I knew there was a reason why I liked him. (I’m not well-versed enough in cat breeds to identify them very easily. I thought one of yours kind of looked like a maine coon.)
Yeah, Favre’s a ragdoll. We wanted a cat we knew would have a good personality, and that he does! As for the maine coon, Shopdog is half Russian blue, half maine coon. She got all the worst traits of each and none of the good ones! :D (Just kidding — she’s very smart like a maine coon. It just means she’s smart enough to not hang around us at all!)
Wow, you guys and your exotic cats! (I counted 7, was that right?) My mom always goes for the generic DSH that someone is giving away. I personally like persians, but they look like they are a lot of work to care for. Plus, I’m allergic to cats! I’d rather just admire other people’s cats than have one of my own.
Aww, Pam, I’ll let the cats know you were enjoying their photo gallery! Matsui really is quite the cutie-pie, isn’t she? We’re constantly marveling that someone gave her up. We adopted her as an adult, and the day we went to pick her up at Petsmart, they opened her cage, I picked her up, and she started licking my cheek. Just like, “Hi. Nice to meet you. I love you.” It was pretty hilarious because there were two older ladies who were there just to look at the cats, not really considering adopting any, and Matsui was being so cute that they were like, “Sign us up for new cats!”
And y’all get to go to practices and stuff, right? EEEE!
I know! I like that practices are open to the public, especially ones on weekends.
the guy ahead of us on the list for ragdoll kittens decided Favre was so ugly that he’d wait months until the next litter was born in the hopes of getting a less ugly kitten.
That’s just wrong on so many levels.
practices are open to the public
Those were the days! I miss South Mountain Arena in West Orange.
Yes Schnookie, we were thoroughly enjoying the cats last night! We go to PetSmart sometimes just to look at the animals, like those old ladies did!
(I counted 7, was that right?)
No, we only have 6, because Favre’s brother, Sugarfoot, died. Matsui was his replacement. (Like that? “Only” six cats? That’s… a lot of cats.)
And Boomer’s terribly allergic to cats, too, but she just perseveres! :P
As for our exotic breeds of cats, we had outdoor mutt cats for many, many years when we were kids, but after our dad died we were finally able to have indoor cats. We got the marvelous Mahmoud from a pound, and then decided to give ragdolls a spin because we thought we wanted a lap-inclined cat. So we got Roy from a breeder, and he isn’t even remotely type-y. He hates sitting in laps, hates being held, but is the most personable, wonderful cat ever. When Pookie and I moved back here from Arizona, we went back to the same breeder because we just wanted another pet as fantastic as Roy is, and that’s how we ended up with Favre. Shopdog, of the Russian Blue/Maine Coon mix, is essentially just a pound cat. So we’re not too purebred-y! :P
That’s just wrong on so many levels.
Heh. You wouldn’t think that if you’d seen how ugly Favre was. Considering how much a ragdoll kitten costs, I really don’t blame that guy for passing him up! Favre was a MONSTER. :D
I like that practices are open to the public, especially ones on weekends.
I am so, so, so, so jealous!
We go to PetSmart sometimes just to look at the animals, like those old ladies did!
We do that fairly often. Go to the “Kitty Store” as we call it. I mean, we have to go there to buy supplies! Since finding Matsui (whom we were going to adopt whether Sugarfoot recovered from his illness or not), we haven’t seen another cat there who was meant for us, thank goodness. I mean, like I said, six is a LOT of cats! :P
Wow…6 cats is insane. I would probably have to live my life in a Benadryl-induced coma!
My family history of cats goes like this:
when we were little we had Pookie and Bumple. Pookie was a 6 toed cat like Rollie, but she was a tuxedo cat like Matsui!
They were replaced by Little P (the P stands for Pookie cause she looks like her!) and the cat that we couldn’t name, so we affectionately referred to her as fatty, as she is an enormous cat.
Awww! A six-toed tuxedo kitty named Pookie? That sounds ADORABLE!
Yup. That was Val’s favorite I believe. She was very attached to that cat.
Well, with a name like that, who wouldn’t love that cat? :D
I feel like it always needs to be said — we only have 6 cats because we combined two households! Left to our own devices, we would never have more than four at a time! OK, wait, four sounds like a lot, too. I’m not helping my case here, am I? Heh.
As for open practices, what I would give! Stupid Devils, always ruining everything!
I would like more than I currently have (I have Claude and Eric) but I am actually at one more than I am allowed by the rules in my townhouse community. I am only supposed to have one (we can have two pets, but it has to be one dog and one cat, not two of each), but since I had two when they started enforcing it, I have been allowed to keep the two I have (so kind of them) for their lives.
What I am going to do once I lose one, I’m not sure. I’m supposed to be at one after that. Claudie won’t do well as an only cat.
Ooooh cats! I luff cats, but they’re such a problem for me. I love them to bits, but I like breathing. It’s so complicated, being me. I might just cave and get one eventually, but I can’t decide on the kind I’d like. I know I want a huggy kitty though (breathing, feh).
I had to put on a sweater today. A real sweater! Because it was cold! Not because I wished it was cold. It was glorious.
What I am going to do once I lose one, I’m not sure. I’m supposed to be at one after that. Claudie won’t do well as an only cat.
I’d just keep replacing cats as needed and assume that the authorities can’t really tell them apart.

They made us send in pictures as part of pet registration when they started enforcing the rules, with pet age, weight, etc. So, I think I would have to replace with a cat that looked somewhat like the one I would be theoretically replacing. No kittens, it would have to be an adult. Not that I mind that.
Either that or I have to win the lottery, move out and get a place that doesn’t have these rules.
Wow Sue that’s some hardcore rule-enforcing they have! In my apartment complex the rule is: indoor cats only. But people have outdoor cats and even dogs.
So, I think I would have to replace with a cat that looked somewhat like the one I would be theoretically replacing.
When we adopted our tabby Rollie, we were competing with some little old lady over her. It turns out the little old lady was trying to replace her recently deceased tabby, and thought Rollie looked just like it. We keep laughing that Rollie was barely spared a life like in The Simpsons after Maude Flanders dies and Ned styles his girlfriend while she’s sleeping to look just like her. That’s what you can be like! :P
I wasn’t a cat person until March 24, 2009, the day we got Oscar. I thought having a cat would be as much fun as having a pet lizard. But no! I love kitties now! Oscar is much more fun than a lizard. WAY more.
Happy September everybody. I’m all ready for the fall. And Have been reading up on Feng Shui. Time to declutter the house (apparently a good time to do so when the leaves turn colour.)
Carol, you have a pet lizard, that’s fantastic! We had bearded dragons, which I loved. But we couldn’t take care of them when we left for college, plus we hated feeding them crickets.
Oscar is much more fun than a lizard. WAY more.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Have you told him that to his face? (I’m so glad that Oscar has been such a good addition to your family!)
And wowza on the Feng Shui! Decluttering without a plan is hard enough for me — I’m impressed that you could declutter with purpose. :D
Oscar is much more fun than a lizard. WAY more.
It’s his special brand of kitty evil, warping your mind.
Wow Sue that’s some hardcore rule-enforcing they have!
The rule was on the books when I bought the place in 1997. I looked at several units before I purchased and I was told about the rule but told it was never enforced as long as you had indoor pets and didn’t go crazy (don’t get eight cats).
People with dogs weren’t keeping them inside when they weren’t walking them and failed to keep them on a leash when they walked them so they started cracking down about 3 years ago. I spoke to some of my neighbors who were selling during the height of the real estate boom and they told me they had several people who were interested decide not to even bid on units because they had more than one cat or dog and the association won’t let you move in.
Schnookie, I saw the pictures of Rollie and she has the same coloring as Eric. Not quite the same coat pattern. Eric has swirls, not stripes…but I saw the face and thought…that looks almost like Eric.
I’ve had cats off and on my whole life, but never more than one at a time. I have been thinking about getting two, later this year, but I keep chickening out. I fear they’ll like each other better than they do me. And then conspire with each other to get rid of me. :D
And then conspire with each other to get rid of me.
Only if they can figure out how to use the telephone to report you for alleged ‘misconduct’. Then, of course, they need to hire new ‘staff’. Until then, you should be fine.
Only if they can figure out how to use the telephone to report you for alleged ‘misconduct’.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::
I think my last cat could have used the phone. Thank goodness she lacked a co-conspirator.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to both of you! I’m glad now that Favre and Sugarfoot were too busy being snooty purebreds to play along with Rollie’s evil plans. She used to like to climb into plastic bags, and was probably just waiting for a co-conspirator to come along with a camera phone to report us to Kitty Services. That was a near miss for us! :P
And Sue, I love swirly tabbies! Eric sounds so cute!
Aww, I feel kinda sad now. I’m moving in October (officially! for real!) and I can’t afford to take my cat with me. The pet deposit at the new place is $350 non-refundable.
So the cat will have to wait a while at the very least.
Matsui’s still my favorite IPB Kitty though. I can’t help it! So adorable.

My cat’s smart enough to know that the humans bring the food. As long as there’s food, he realizes that we have a good exchange going on.
WOO! Moving! That’s so awesome! Are you excited (beside being sad about no cat)? Where are you moving to?

I’m kind of partial to Favre. He’s adorable. And I’m not a cat person, either!
And another sign hockey’s a’comin. Yahoo Fantasy Hockey should be up and running today, per Greg W.
That’s so awesome! Are you excited (beside being sad about no cat)? Where are you moving to?
1. Yes, so very excited you have no idea.
2. I’m moving to the suburban area north-ish of Dallas. I currently live east-ish of Dallas. :D
The homebuying thing just got infinitely stressful and became much more stress than I could handle so I’m renting an apartment. The application is going in this week and then I’ll be going probably this weekend, I hope, to look at the apartment I want and put down a deposit plus first month’s rent. :)
Nice complex. Once I realized they do door-to-door trash pickup instead of making the residents haul it to the dumpster themselves, I was totally sold.
I’m kind of partial to Favre.
Me too, but don’t tell the others I said that. :P
And Caitlin, I think that’s super-duper exciting! Especially the door-to-door trash pickup.
Yahoo Fantasy Hockey should be up and running today, per Greg W.
Really? Crap. I’m going to suck again at it, but I might as well sign up again.
Me too, but don’t tell the others I said that. :P
No kidding. They know where you sleep, Schnookie!
I think that’s super-duper exciting!
Yay! Thanks. :D
I’m kind of partial to Favre.
Me too, but don’t tell the others I said that. :P
Poor Rollie gets no love from anyone but me!
Catilin, a new apartment sounds exciting! Congratulations!
Amy, I’m formulating my list of players I want to tell Yahoo to auto-draft for me as I type!
I was just gonna say that I’m kind of partial to Rollie. I love stripey kitties.
That’s so cool, Caitlin! I once lived in an apartment northish of Dallas where you left your trash just outside the door. It was niiiiice.
Have fun moving!
Hm. I need to look up the list I’ve been saving of cool/funny/lame fantasy team names.
Can I get in y’all’s Fantasy League? (as you might say in Texas)
I need to look up the list I’ve been saving of cool/funny/lame fantasy team names.
I’m just going to stick some weird names in a jar and pick some out, see what I get.
Aww, thanks, Patty! :D
Hm. I need to look up the list I’ve been saving of cool/funny/lame fantasy team names.
My suggestion is to pick the team name that will sound best losing to the Craig Andersoxers.
My suggestion is to pick the team name that will sound best losing to the Craig Andersoxers.
I think I will decline to take that advice. It’s impossible to imagine losing to a team like that.
Have fun moving!
Heh. Yeah. Have fun with that part. :P
Can I get in y’all’s Fantasy League? (as you might say in Texas)
Only because you asked appropriately Texasly. :P
Seriously, though, we’ve put out a request to andrew to see if he wants to commish again, but if we don’t hear from him soon, we’ll go ahead and get the ball rolling on this year’s Super/AmazingLeague(s). So watch this space for announcements!
I have a name for my team but I kinda hate it. I’m short on good ideas.

Can I get in y’all’s Fantasy League? (as you might say in Texas)
Of course!
I sent an email out to our fearless commish to see if he’d be interested in setting up the leagues again. If not, we’ll figure something else out.
Have fun with that part. :P
I am dreading that part. Luckily, I have bought furniture that stays in the box (you know, the uber-cheap kind!) so that should be easier to move.
I’m short on good ideas.
The story of my life!
It’s impossible to imagine losing to a team like that.
Oh noes! Patty’s coming out swingin’!
Patty, you’ve been practicing haven’t you?
Afternoon everyone. We’re totally dull at our house, only one cat, but she has personality to go around. She literally hates everyone who sets foot in our house, expect for Tracie and I. She’ll sit there and hiss and cry at everyone while refusing to leave the room. It’s great, really.
It’s impossible to imagine losing to a team like that.
Excuse me?
Laugh all you want now. You won’t be laughing later when the Craig Andersoxers are winning it all. Oh yes, you won’t.
I sent an email out to our fearless commish to see if he’d be interested in setting up the leagues again.
Ha! I see my timing is impeccable. That’s pretty funny.
I guess I’d better go check my e-mail. When did you send it? I was on it this morning and didn’t see anything.
I guess I’d better go check my e-mail. When did you send it?
Um…. about 30 seconds after I read on PD that the Yahoo rankings are available now? Not that I’m desperate for hockey (even the fantasy equivalent) or anything. :D
Speak of the devil — it’s our fearless commish! The hookers and blow always get andrew’s attention. :P

:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I have to say, I think I’d love having a cat like that. The ones we have that hate people just go into the basement and hide under the stairs whenever strangers are in the house. That’s no fun at all.
Oh yes, you won’t.

…or totally afraid of having to learn how to commish yourself. :P
…or totally afraid of having to learn how to commish yourself. :P
Look at that hobo! He’s stealing andrew’s hookers and blow!
Um…. about 30 seconds after I read on PD that the Yahoo rankings are available now?
HA! Quick on the draw. I like that. Keeps me on my toes! Of course, I would love to commish again, if the masses will have me. Sorry I’ve been a bit of an absentee Irregular this summer, things are insane on the workfront. But not to worry, I plan on ignoring all that bullshit once hockey season starts back up.
The hookers and blow always get andrew’s attention.
You say that like it’s a bad thing!
I have to say, I think I’d love having a cat like that.
It gets old, fast. The funny thing is that everyone else seems to love it. She’ll sit on the stairs and menacingly hiss and wail and all of my friends/nephews/nieces/etc. just love petting her while she tries to scare them away.
Also, she’s a black cat, so the upside is that we’ve got a year round live-in Halloween decoration
But not to worry, I plan on ignoring all that bullshit once hockey season starts back up.
That’s what we like to hear! (And don’t apologize for being an absentee. We’ve been pretty absentee bloggers this summer. :P)
we’ve got a year round live-in Halloween decoration
HA! Nice! And with all that hissing and spitting, it sounds like she really plays the part.
We’ve been pretty absentee bloggers this summer.
My dad keeps telling me that I haven’t blogged in awhile. I keep telling him that I can’t just make stuff up to write about. I need material to work with. Of course, watch tonight there be an announcement that Staffy and C-Mac have been traded for a bag of pucks and a mop bucket.
Fantasy hockey? Whooooo the hockey season is almost here!
Look at that hobo! He’s stealing andrew’s hookers and blow!
What’s Gomez doing here? Who invited him?
I keep telling him that I can’t just make stuff up to write about.
Ain’t that the sad truth? And it’s so true that you have to be careful what you wish for. Sometimes having nothing to write about is way better than having lots of blog fodder.
I keep telling him that I can’t just make stuff up to write about.
Yeah, the Sabres have to, y’know, *do* something in order for you to write about them.
You could do a series of speculative posts on who will be the Sabres PA rep now that Petey has been shown the door. Exciting!
Um…. about 30 seconds after I read on PD that the Yahoo rankings are available now?
I saw that. Zach is ranked something like #4. Didn’t they think to adjust for the inevitable “Lemaire factor” and realize that Zach will be benched if he actually scores?
Okay, I was here ungodly early this morning, so I get to head out ridiculously early too! See y’all later!
The Ovary Calling Hot Bishes will be delightfully mediocre again but yayyyyyy fantasy hockey!
Fantasy hockey? Oh yeah, count me in again!
alix, you’d better make it the OvaryCallingHotBishes, or maybe just settle on one bish…or else your team name is gonna be too long!
Ooooh, thanks andrew!
Ooooh, thanks andrew!
No problem. Gotta earn my fake commissioner pay somehow.
So, how are you feeling about the trade w/the Sharks?
So, how are you feeling about the trade w/the Sharks?
I feel good pretty good about it. Rahimi and Patty White just weren’t going to progress enough in Vancouver to make an impact. I think Ehrhoff will improve our power play and (I assume) Lukowic will be a good mentor for the baybees on Manitoba.
How do you feel about it?
How do you feel about it?
I’m fine with it. It was a salary dump and Ehrhoff, even though valuable, had pretty much worn out his welcome in SJ. I liked Lukowich but he would have been 7th or 8th on the depth chart and there was just no room for a $1.5m healthy scratch. This deal gave the Sharks room to sign Torrey Mitchell, who will be a really crucial piece of the puzzle for the next few years.
Rahimi and White may turn out…they may not, whatever. I’m cool with ‘em. I just learned that if the Sharks never sign White (he’s the one at Minnesota, right?) then Vancouver gives SJ a 2nd round pick at a later date. Good insurance.
That’s cool you guys get to keep Torrey Mitchell. I like that kid immensely.
I didn’t know about the second rounder. That’s always good.
Yup, Patty White’s the one at Minnesota.
