Today we took the last of the tomato plants out of the garden. It’s always a pretty big day for the garden when that happens, because it goes from having beds overgrown with thickets of tall, fading tomatoes to being a bare and increasingly monastic space. In contrast to the newly empty beds, however, the peppers and basil (in the foreground) and soup beans (in the background) are still a riot of lush greenery.
