You know what we’re avoiding tonight? Pens/Caps.
Ew.

Ha! We don’t seem to have that option on our TV for some reason. Instead I’m watching Toronto and Tampa Bay. Ah boo! Stink VS. Stunk. And Stink is winning somehow.
For a Bully Pulpit, it’s very succinct. :D
Wow, Carol, you’re telling me Canada doesn’t have Pens/Caps on? That’s crazy! :D
Stink VS. Stunk. And Stink is winning somehow.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And thanks, Patty. Sometimes, short and sweet is the best kind of bully pulpit. :P
We don’t have NHL Network so we don’t have to worry about Pens v Caps.
The Stars better play well because today has been really really crappy. Our manufacturer is wanting to buy us, which would mean, bye-bye to my job.
Just shoot me now.
Oh, no, Myra! That’s terrible! If my experience is any indication, it will take a LONG time for something like that to come to fruition.
Oh my god, are you serious, Myra? That’s awful!
Oh no, Myra, that’s terrible! I’ll keep my fingers and toes crossed it doesn’t come to that.
I got laid off myself, as some of you may have heard. It’s kind of scary. I KNEW I shouldn’t have bought a new car. :P
I am so sorry, Patty. I didn’t know what to say when Dave got laid off, or what to say when Frisby got laid off, and I still don’t know what to say now. Well, except that your former employers are stupid assholes who are going to regret letting you go.
I’m in shock. My guys keep saying it won’t happen but I’m stunned that it has gotten this far. I work directly for our CFO and she was majorly pissed today. So that didn’t make me feel any better.
Well, except that your former employers are stupid assholes who are going to regret letting you go.
That’s the perfect thing to say. Because it’s true. :D
Man, Myra, I’m so, so sorry. With shit like that, it’s especially maddening to not get a straight story. Like, the guys tell you it’s all going to be fine… right up until they’re saying it’s not. I’ve gone a few rounds with my employer where we’ve all gotten hints that we were maybe on thin ice, and then HR would be all, “No, no, it’s all fine!” Then there would be a round of layoffs. It’s just like, couldn’t you at least give those people some warning so they can start lining stuff up? Must it be all, “NO WORRIES!” when, well, there ARE worries? It sucks so, so bad. But I really, really, really, REALLY hope your guys are right, and you’ll be fine. (For all that I’m like, “Oh yeah, I’ve been there,” the fact is that for me, HR’s always been right, and there weren’t worries. Heh. :P)
Poop. That goal is not making me feel better.
And if an HR lady tells you after the fact that you can call her any time with questions, don’t believe her.
And if an HR lady tells you after the fact that you can call her any time with questions, don’t believe her.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Dude, with my fucking HR lady, I can’t call her with questions about anything BEFORE the fact. Any fact. I used to think that HR people were just people who happened to have shitty jobs, but since meeting her, I’m realizing HR people are shitty people who have shitty jobs.
I’m so sorry you got laid off, Patty. And I’m sorry that your job is in turmoil, Myra.
“Raymond Burr” beat Grossman for the goal. Grossman almost never gets beat. Bad vibes all around.
And thank you for all the kind words and commiserations.
And Ya! Loui scores! That’s better.
Thanks, Meg. If you hear of any dream jobs, send them my way. :D
I used to think that HR people were just people who happened to have shitty jobs, but since meeting her, I’m realizing HR people are shitty people who have shitty jobs.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The head of HR at my company has the incredible ability to not only remember everyone’s name but also make you feel like she actually remembers something about you. It’s like a superpower! I think she’s just one of those rare people who actually enjoys working in HR and is therefore capable of actually being pleasant though.
Loui was telling us that Dave and I will get great new yobs. And that Myra’s yob won’t be affected.
Ooh, yikes. Jamie Benn has a NASTY row of stitches under his nose.
I think she’s just one of those rare people who actually enjoys working in HR and is therefore capable of actually being pleasant though.
Our HR lady’s predecessor used to be like that. She was too competent and genuinely good to stay in that job, though, so she got promoted away from my department. I still see her occasionally, and even though she’s super-mega high-powered now, and I’m super-mega not, she still knows my name and all kinds of stuff about me. Those people rawk. And just throw into sharper relief how awful the normal HR people are. :P
Loui was telling us that Dave and I will get great new yobs. And that Myra’s yob won’t be affected.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Awww! That’s so reassuring of him!
I’m realizing HR people are shitty people who have shitty jobs.
Our HR people that were local were very nice and helpful, but the Dutch people’s HR lady just sent all my questions to the poor local lady to answer. I thought that was kind of shitty. Especially after she made the I’m-so-sorry face and told me I could call any time.
I’m fine, though! I’ve always wanted to be a performer in Cirque de Soleil so I’m gonna take this opportunity to do it! WOO!
Loui was telling us that Dave and I will get great new yobs. And that Myra’s yob won’t be affected.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I was hoping I was sending everyone good yob vibes this week because I got to hire my first person. I mean, for the first time I got to call someone and tell them they were hired. It took me three messages to remember to tell her everything I meant to in the first message. Oops. (It’s no one’s dream yob, though.)
I’m fine, though! I’ve always wanted to be a performer in Cirque de Soleil so I’m gonna take this opportunity to do it! WOO!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: And you’re gonna be AWESOME at it! Your old employer’s loss is Cirque de Soleil’s gain!
I can’t wait to get comped tickets to Cirque de Soleil (in Dallas)!
I’m fine, though! I’ve always wanted to be a performer in Cirque de Soleil so I’m gonna take this opportunity to do it! WOO!
I think you’ll be the star of Cirque in NO time!
(It’s no one’s dream yob, though.)
Hey, maybe Dave, Myra or Patty would love to be a $7/hr part-time lab assistant in your totally depressing library!
That Loui, he’s such a nice boy.
That Loui, he’s such a nice boy.
It’s because he’s a Star and a ‘Soxer!
Hey, maybe Dave, Myra or Patty would love to be a $7/hr part-time lab assistant in your totally depressing library!
That actually sounds pretty good, considering I’d be living with y’all rent-free.
And that’s so cool that you got to hire somebody, Pookie! From now on, you’ll follow that person’s career the way you follow the players in the first draft you ever saw on TV. (That might just be me that does that.)
That actually sounds pretty good, considering I’d be living with y’all rent-free.
Heh. You’d have to become a Devils fan, though. That might be too steep a price to pay. :P
Knowledge of HTML tags isn’t required, is it?
That actually sounds pretty good, considering I’d be living with y’all rent-free.
Good point! You could carpool with me and just hang out in the depressing library until your shift starts. I might even be able to drum up a chair for you to sit in that hasn’t been peed on by customers! (Kidding. Sort of.)
From now on, you’ll follow that person’s career the way you follow the players in the first draft you ever saw on TV.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: (This isn’t really a job that lends itself to job advancement. :( )
I’m with Patty, does that yob include free room and board at Maple Hoo? (Did I spell that right. I’m too tired to remember.)
Yup, that’s how it’s spelled! You can also spell it F-U-N. (No “fetti”.)
Knowledge of HTML tags isn’t required, is it?
Um, yes it is. Unfortunately, you’ve lost the yob to Myra.
Unfortunately, you’ve lost the yob to Myra.
Dammit!
I mean, congratulations, Myra. *glare*
I might even be able to drum up a chair for you to sit in that hasn’t been peed on by customers!
Maybe Myra will need a chair.
Whoa, Patty, Fistric just put the whammy on Bernier. Is that Big Bear? I think he broke him.
Ruh-Roh, break out the smelling salts for Patty (and me), Fistric has stripped down to his ArmorAll to fix his pads.
Ruh-Roh, break out the smelling salts for Patty (and me), Fistric has stripped down to his ArmorAll to fix his pads.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Love the garter-fastening.
Maybe Myra will need a chair.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And that’s so nice of Fistric to give you ladies a treat!
WOO! Tobeeeeeeeeeeee!
Was that a shortie? (The goal, not Petersen. Heh.)
It’s been nice over the last several games to hear Razor speak so glowingly of Fistric.
A Toby shorty. They really are trying to cheer me up.
Hockey is sooo sexy.
Geez. What the hell. I hate the last minute of periods.
Auld has been hanging around with Turco too long.
Hockey is sooo sexy.
That is so true. That’s a Bully Pulpit post for you right there!
And on that note, good night, everyone!
AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Sorry Stars fans and I love Auld (He’s such a sweetie)
But that was SOOO funny.
Myra, Patty, I’m so sorry about your jobs :( I’m sure you ladies will find something kick ass whatever happens. Maybe the Stars need a UnderArmour putter onner/taker offer?
Night Pookie!
Night-Night Pookie.
Yeah, it’s nighty-night time at stately IPB Manor. And we’re both in NYC tomorrow, so don’t freak out if you’re looking for us! :P (We hope to be back in time for the Devils game…)
G’night, everyone! Good luck to all your teams!
Poor Auld. It’s got to be tough, you want to make it an easier transition for your d between you and that puck handling goalie but you aren’t used to it and you get a brain freeze. I’m glad he has time to refocus now.
Good night Schnookie.
Have fun storming the castle tomorrow!
Maybe the Stars need a UnderArmour putter onner/taker offer?
I think I’d be really good at that.
‘Night Pookie and Schnookie!
Maybe the Stars need a UnderArmour putter onner/taker offer?
I think I’d be really good at that.
Or at least half of it.
Night, ladies!
Well, except that your former employers are stupid assholes who are going to regret letting you go.
That’s the perfect thing to say. Because it’s true. :D
Damn straight!
Sorry to hear that though. Best of luck to you. Try not to let it get you down.
There are some positives to being laid off though. You don’t get the “gosh darn, I don’t won’t to go to work today” feeling as soon as you wake up. You have time to finish some of the little projects around the house. Time to think of new excuses not to finish the other ones. Getting some of the money that you’ve been giving to uncle Sam all these years back. Time to delete your Burnout Paradise game save data and start over from scratch.
But then again, I had to switch from 1040EZ to 1040A last year so I could claim the interest on my mortgage and that messed me all up. I can’t wait to see how big the wrench is that having collected unemployment throws into the works. Er, I mean, look at that hobo!
And in strange but true news, last month I actually received a bonus check from the company that laid me off. It was only $168.50 but still, that’s just weird. Of course I cashed it right away just in case.
Knowledge of HTML tags isn’t required, is it?
Um, yes it is. Unfortunately, you’ve lost the yob to Myra.
Crap, looks like Myra doesn’t have to worry about me either. :(
Heh. Last night I was going to get all creative and write a comment using every type of tag that I knew. Then the game went south and I got distracted. Now, I’m just too tired. So pretend like you are really impressed with all the strike-outs and bolds and what-not in this comment, that aren’t really there.
Also, after skimming through the comments from last night, I realized I wrote ArmorAll instead of UnderArmour. Gah. Oh well, I kinda like the way it sounds. Maybe I’ll just call it that anyway. :)
Patty, I am desperately sorry you got laid off. That’s rough, and you really didn’t deserve it. I hope you get a new job soon (but not before you’re quite ready to have a new job)
So pretend like you are really impressed with all the strike-outs and bolds and what-not in this comment, that aren’t really there.
SHOCK! AWE! Myra, I can’t believe your HTML knowledge, it’s astounding!
I wonder what the -Ookies are up to in Ze Cité. Probably taking lots of wonderful pictures.
I am so sorry about the job situation Patty and Myra. My company is about to be acquired, so I am in for the “Am I Being Kept On” ride myself pretty soon.
The Ookies are in NYC?!?!?
*looks out window*
I don’t see them yet.
Thank you, thank you very much, Mags! I’m amazing, aren’t I!
I was just wandering how the Ookies were doing in the Big Apple as well. I hope they are taking lots of pics so I can live vicariously through them. :)
So sorry, Morgan. It isn’t a fun ride.
And what? You don’t see them? NYC can’t be that big….
Spoken by someone who grew up in a town of 2500. :)
I realized I wrote ArmorAll instead of UnderArmour. Gah. Oh well, I kinda like the way it sounds. Maybe I’ll just call it that anyway
And with how some of the guys have the padding built onto their UnderArmour, ArmorAll might be kind of appropriate.
I’m amazing, aren’t I!
You are a wonder, as always.
I’m sorry about the job roller-coasters. It’s just stupid, methinks. Y’all should just have nice, well-paying jobs, and that’s that.
I have no idea what I’ll do when I get out of school. I know what I want to do, it’s just that nobody seems to be able to tell me how I’d go about getting there, primarily because I don’t want to do it here. When I told our Careers Advisor that, he just goggled at me. *sigh*
I have no idea what I’ll do when I get out of school. I know what I want to do, it’s just that nobody seems to be able to tell me how I’d go about getting there, primarily because I don’t want to do it here.
Does “here” reference the Netherlands specifically or Europe as a whole? If you have to move to follow your bliss, then go for it. Career counselors be damned.
Does “here” reference the Netherlands specifically or Europe as a whole?
Mostly Holland. I have no idea about the corporate culture in the rest of Europe. But I’ve done enough internships here to know that Holland’s way of doing things really, really doesn’t appeal to me. I’ve never intended to stay here. I want to go home, but I really don’t know to what extent that is even possible. I want to go into accounting, and those laws are so different everywhere that I don’t know whether my degree here will be applicable elsewhere.
You mean debits and credits aren’t the same everywhere, Mags? :P
Mags, do you have any idea what kind of corporate culture you think would suit you – then maybe you need to start looking for individual companies, not a particular country, per se. I understand that Holland may be out, but perhaps if you know how you like to work, you can find some companies that would suit you and you ould see then which country in Europe they operate in. Where is home, btw?
You mean debits and credits aren’t the same everywhere, Mags? :P
You’d think so, but apparently not!
do you have any idea what kind of corporate culture you think would suit you
Anything that doesn’t encourage mediocrity.
Where is home, btw?
I’m from Montreal, so I suppose that is home. But I’m not picky about where in the general NE US/Canada I end up. Most of my family live around Toronto, with a few outliers in Buffalo and Rochester.
There are some positives to being laid off though.
Thanks, Frisby! I’m encouraged by the fact that you came out of it okay.
And thanks Morgan and Mags. Hopefully, I’ll find something fun soon. Or just soon. :D
And Morgan, my company was acquired TWICE, right in a row, so I know how you feel. It’s no fun to wonder if the ax is behind the door. Hopefully, the new company will be smart and keep you around.
Mags, I think it’s fun to be able to consider such a wide area for your big job. You can pick and choose that way, right? And if you move to the US/Canada, you can come to the next draft we go to! (Probably not L.A.)
Anything that doesn’t encourage mediocrity.
OK, that makes sense, but I think you need to put together a story about what you think it is about the places you have worked that encouraged mediocrity and find companies that you feel don’t do that – and be able to say why.
Regarding where you could work, what passports do you have?
If you have a background in accounting, even if the rules are not all the same, you should be able to study where you end up and take the certification test. You may not work as an accountant originally, but be able to do that after a few years. In my first job after college (as an economist) I worked with someone who decided to go back to school to become an accountant, it should take you much less time than it did her.
And if you move to the US/Canada, you can come to the next draft we go to!
#1 reason I want to move back. Wee hockey players!
Sue, you are a fountain of good advice! Thank you!
what passports do you have?
Dutch and Canadian.
The way it looks right now, it’d be best to finish my bachelor, get a masters in accounting and control here, then get a job and work on getting my certification while I’m doing that, and then move. If I still want to by then, of course.
Sue, you are a fountain of good advice! Thank you!
You’re welcome. I’ve been through the job search e few times and it hasn’t been easy and for me, corporate culture was a big one.
I remember doing a phone interview with one company (when I would have had to move for the job) and they said, our biggest competitor is about 20 miles from you and they were one of your clients, why don’t you just apply there? I told them, I am very familiar with their corporate culture and I wouldn’t be happy working there for reasons a, b and c but I believe I would be happy working for you for these reasons. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get me the job because they didn’t believe a single woman who was living outside of NYC would be happy moving to rural PA. And nothing I could say would change their minds.
No game thread?
WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone here? I’m just back home, and I see it’s 1-0 devils. Please, be honest: as a habs fan, should I just go to bed right now, or is there a tiny chance it might be worthwile to stay up?
Well, it’s been so long since the Devs had a lead in the first period that I don’t know what to expect. On the other hand you missed a great quote from Gionta – asked about what sort of reception he expected to get tonight he said something along the lines of “Oh, they probably won’t even notice me. They’ll be too busy booing Gomez.”
There ya go, Grrreg. Although I’m pretty confused by the large number of Habs fans in residence this evening.
Ahahahaha! I have to say, I really like Gio. He has a great attitude. Sure he’s expensive, but compared to Gomez, he really looks cheap! I’m really glad Gainey signed him.
Pouliot can’t stop scoring. That Latendresse-Pouliot trade between the habs and the wild really looks more and more like a rare win-win trade.
Zach’s starting to talk more and more like Jacques. If he starts chewing gum, we might have to get him some therapy.
Hey everyone! We’re back at stately IPB Manor and settled in front of the tv, but we’re on a bit of tivo delay, so carry on without us. If we catch up, we’ll be back. :D
Hey Schnookie! I was about to tell EJGRunner to say hi when you would be back. It’s time to go to bed. Good luck, I hope the rest of the game will be exciting (as for the outcome, well, we’ll see!)
Good night!
Any chance for a fresh thread? This one smells a little over-ripe.
You got it, Gunner — give me a few secs and we’ll toss up a new thread!
There’s a fresh, fluffy, sweet-smelling new thread now. :D
