Way back on December 18 the brilliant and talented Gentle Reader Jarhead_SGT blew our minds with this homemade Chuck the Duck. After we recovered from the staggering sense of awe, we wondered, “How did we not think of that?” Really, how could we not have our own Chuck the Duck? Especially when we already knew exactly how to make a felt duck. All we would need is the felt duck, a hockey sweater for it, a hockey helmet, and a cigar. It would be a piece of cake!
We started with a prototype, just to hammer out the logistics. Using craft-store felt, we constructed a shockingly cute little duck, then draped him for his Reebok slim-fit-style sweater. There was no small sense of thrilling accomplishment when we realized it was going to work.
Our prototype was so cute, we hated just to think of it as a mere step in the construction process. But when we talked about it, we couldn’t call it “Chuck” because “Chuck” was going to be the real duck. Chuck proper was going to made out of fancier materials, and dressed, and his beak was going to be stuffed the way the pattern called for (a step we forgot to do on the prototype). We named the model MiniChuck. And MiniChuck has been a boon companion lo these weeks while awaiting the arrival in the mail of the fancy wool felt we ordered online.
Yesterday, though, the pieces were all in place. The duck-making factory swung into action. And after hours of trimming and sewing and stuffing and fluffing, our masterpiece was complete.
Behold, Gentle Reader: MAXIMUM CHUCK!
None! None more Chuck!
Chuck likes to bask in the glory of our free giveaway Stanley Cup banners.
Chuck wears the very cutting edge of concussion-proof ping pong ball helmets.
Chuck is a brawny manly-man, whose chest measures a whopping entire inch across.
Because we’re very proud of cutting out such a small felt Devils logo, here’s another picture of it!
Chuck smokes only the finest hand-rolled construction-paper cigars.
A Canada goose can break a human’s shinbone with the force of its wings. For Chuck, that kind of damage is child’s play.
Chuck can fight with the best of them, but he’s also got soft hands. He’s everything a hockey fan could ask for.
This Chuck might not have the glamorous lifestyle of the real Chuck, with his speedboats and his exotic travels and his poutine, but he has one decided advantage over his namesake: no Stan.
Fischler-free since February 2010.

Nice handy-craftery, but what is this Chuck the Duck you speak of?
CHUCK! CHUCK! CHUCK! CHUCK! CHUCK! (Dave’s response.)
OHHHHHHH HE’S SOOOOO ADORABLE!!!! (Grace’s response.)
AHAHAHAH!!! I knew it! I’m such a Sherlock Holmes!
but what is this Chuck the Duck you speak of?
Chuck is the informal mascot of the Devils broadcasts on MSG. He periodically makes appearances soaking up the sights on road trips. I’m not lying when I say that Chuck was the best thing about watching the Devils on TV over the last two seasons (which, admittedly, is not saying a lot). Anyway, we were shocked and horrified to discover that the best screen shots we have of him are this one of him speedboating on a trip in Florida, and this one of him at Christmastime. (Chuck’s a stuffed animal duck wearing a Devils sweater and helmet and cigar, perhaps needless to say. :D)
AHAHAHAH!!! I knew it! I’m such a Sherlock Holmes!
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: We were DYING laughing when we finished MiniChuck, just because putting a picture of his feet on IPB Living got Amy to say, “Is that what I think it is?” Heh. The Devils don’t give us much, but what they do, we run with. :P
And thanks for the enthusiastic response, Myra Household! :D
A few years ago Stan and Matt Laughlin did an intermission segment where they’d answer view emails. The person who wrote the email that Stan liked the best would win a prize. After a while, Stan introduced “Chuck the Duck” — a stuffed duck who would fly in from the top of the frame when the winning email was read. Then after a few weeks, Chuck got a cigar. Then a helmet, and finally a sweater. When the segment got retired, Chuck started appearing in flavoring shots of the visiting city. He’s the greatest thing ever.
Chuck’s origins were as a spoof on the Groucho Marx duck on “You Bet Your Life”.
Thanks, Dave, Grace, and Myra! When we were planning this and then constructing it, I had hoped it would turn out okay. I had no idea it was going to turn out this cute! (Although, from the other profile, his ping pong ball helmet looks a little like a Gloria Swanson turban crossed with a milkmaid bonnet. :D)
Gloria Swanson turban crossed with a milkmaid bonnet.
Ha. I can see where you could get that but it really isn’t that far off from those new helmets they switching over to.
This duck sounds intriguing and amazing. I wish there was video of him somewhere.
True, true. MaximumChuck is just modeling the new salad-spinner turban.
I can see where you could get that but it really isn’t that far off from those new helmets they switching over to.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It was either a ping pong ball or we were going to have to make a helmet out of felt. In discussing the possible approaches to designing a felt helmet, the words “Amish prayer bonnet” got thrown around, so I think the ping pong ball was probably the way to go. :P
Tim, I’m scouring YouTube for Chuck right now!
Ok, this is so not right. Ovechkin get the hat trick. Poopie.
This is so symbolic of my life right now.
And yes, I am being a big whiny poopie pants today.
Aw, I’m sorry, Myra! Stupid fucking Ovechkin.
Tim, here’s some glorious Chuck the Duck in action! (Watch to immediately after the first question in the segment.)
Well, now I’m DOUBLY glad I’m not watching that game today! :P
Good gravy, Chuck is amazing!
I can’t believe you’ve been living a life bereft of Chuck all this time, Tim! I take him so for granted…
Chuck has the life.
He really does. Chuck lives on easy street.
Chuck is amazing. Absolutely bloody amazing.
Ladies, you definitely made the right choice today.
Stupid Caps/Ovechkin. Bleh.
Chuck is fantastic!
Mags, we were thinking that someday Chuck is going to have to meet Boxworthy. Imagine the photoshoots we could have! :D
And thanks so much, Mags and Meg!
And thanks to us, for having the fortitude and foresight not to watch today’s game. :P
someday Chuck is going to have to meet Boxworthy.
Hee! That would be completely fantastic. One day *sigh*
And thanks to us, for having the fortitude and foresight not to watch today’s game. :P
I wish I’d been clever enough. I sat and watched Wales lose to England, and then Scotland lose to bloody France in the 6 Nations too. That, and the Devils shoulda told me wasn’t going to be a good sports weekend. *mumblegrumble*
That, and the Devils shoulda told me wasn’t going to be a good sports weekend. *mumblegrumble*
Some weeks, it’s just like the universe is conspiring against us, isn’t it? (I’m actually going through a lot of my photo folders from last March, April and May. Whenever I look at our photostream, I’m like, “Ugh. That time of year SUCKED,” because we seemed only to have uploaded pictures that matched our sports-induced lousy moods. It turns out the sun DID shine at the end of last year’s hockey season [some of the time]. WHO KNEW?)
I sat and watched Wales lose to England, and then Scotland lose to bloody France in the 6 Nations too.
At least the second half of the Wales game was exciting. Alun Wyn Jones was a moron though. Can’t say I was expecting France to lose today, but I couldn’t find the game online so I didn’t watch.
Some weeks, it’s just like the universe is conspiring against us, isn’t it?
Absolutely. Uni was interminable this week. But next week will be better! Only 4 days till the Olympics and 6 days to snowboarding :D
WHO KNEW?
Not I. I can’t even go back to my pictures of that time, because the CD I burned them on is missing. I suppose I’ll find it in the middle of the summer, when I least need it :P
Alun Wyn Jones was a moron though.
I wanted.to.kick.him.
But yeah, I’ll give you that France wasn’t likely to lose. But that doesn’t change that it was disappointing. Scotland made so many stupid mistakes and paid for them. France messed up too, but they didn’t get bitten for it. And the French scrum was crazy good.
Chuck (the real Chuck and your Chuck(s)) are totallyy awesome! Well done, Ookies. :)
The Welsh lineouts were atrocious. Hopefully all the teams will have their shit together for next week.
Thanks, Sam!
I suppose I’ll find it in the middle of the summer, when I least need it :P
Seriously! They’re no use to anyone then! Gah! I’m sorry. But 6 days to snowboarding is good! :D
Yeah, they lost what, five of their lineouts? Not a good stat.
Chuck is amazing. Well done!
Oh! I would love to see a photoshoot of Boxworthy and Max Chuck! That would be awesome!
Thanks Amy! :D
So, anyone watching the big game? Go Colts!
Go anyone, just get this anthem over with!
Go Saints!
No Indiana pride for you, Tim?
If you had to spend 4 years here, you’d have no Indiana pride either.
Also, Peyton’s an insufferable douchenozzle, Nawlins deserves the win so much more, and I want to see how hard the party all this week.
I have too much of a personal history with New Orleans to be able to cheer for the Saints. ::Shudder:: :P
I have to admit, I’d love to see how Jim Caldwell handles a gatorade shower, seeing as he’s incapable of expression.
Oooooh, Chuck the Duck and some rugby talk! You just saved my evening! Congrats on the wonderful homemade Chuck. And WOOOOOOOOOO for France beating Scotland! ;P
(And just because this is a hockey blog, man that Habs/Bruins game was atrocious…)
Thanks, Grrrreg! About Chuck, not about the Habs/Bruins game. I’d say it really sucked, but I’m being slowly beaten down by the commercials during this football game. What I’ve learned REALLY sucks is women. Women are the worst.
What I’ve learned REALLY sucks is women. Women are the worst.
That we are.
And CBS’s ad scheduling department is committing a major fail by scheduling similar themed commercials together. There’s no reason for two no-pants and two little people ads to run in succession.
I couldn’t be bothered to go out to a bar, and I have no cable, so I’m watching a choppy stream of the BBC’s coverage. All I’ve learned is Rod Woodson’s still working for the Beeb and the Olympics are coming. There are no ads for anything and for once I’m sad about that.
Maximum Chuck is the most adorable thing! I love his little logo!
And CBS’s ad scheduling department is committing a major fail by scheduling similar themed commercials together.
They’re probably like, “Have you SEEN what we’re stuck working with?” Maybe we should admire them for grouping the similar themed commercials as some kind of statement about the creative bankruptcy we’re seeing tonight from the advertisers? :P
What I’ve learned REALLY sucks is women. Women are the worst.
Fortunately, women don’t watch the Super Bowl, so they don’t have to worry about insulting them. Wait…what?
I know some women who really suck. Wink wink nudge nudge.

Fortunately, women don’t watch the Super Bowl, so they don’t have to worry about insulting them. Wait…what?
Heh. Fortunately, there have only been about four companies advertising this year, so my list of products I need to boycott is pretty short. :P
“Have you SEEN what we’re stuck working with?”
I’ve liked the Doritos and the violin playing beaver ads. The rest have been meh. Though I was relieved that Mark Sanchez’s PSA was only for heart disease and not cervical cancer. Because the NY Jets version of Timmy encouraging me to get my hoo-ha checked would have been a little much.
What is this “beaver” and how do the violins play it?
I’m frankly amazed Daltrey can still manage that scream.
I know some women who really suck. Wink wink nudge nudge.
Because the NY Jets version of Timmy encouraging me to get my hoo-ha checked would have been a little much.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Timmy’s like, “No, really get it checked. And in advance? YOU’RE WELLLLLLCOME!”
Totally forgot to watch this first, even though it’s obligatory:

What is this “beaver” and how do the violins play it?
Let’s try “violin playing beavers.” :P
Ugh, I did it again. How about “animals that eat wood and build dams have the potential to play stringed instruments.”
This is why I can’t type and hold a conversation.
This is why I can’t type and hold a conversation.

Violin-playing beavers>
WOOOOOOOOOO
Hey, I haven’t been too impressed with the commercials either. Bummer. That’s the only reason why I watch anymore.
The half time stage, however, was awesome. Not the performers, the stage and light show.
And this is Myra. Hub has my computer. We are trying to confuse ourselves.

I’ll concede that the stage was pretty cool. We muted the performance, but stage was nifty.
I miss hockey.
Eh. I’ve heard worse but you definitely didn’t miss anything by muting it.
And that was still Myra. Sorry, I really should make him give me back my computer.
That’s good to hear, because it’s too late now for me to rewind if it was great. :P
So…when NBC shows hockey, they assume nobody’s ever heard of it, and broadcast it as if it’s some bizarre, exotic game from the windswept steppes of Mongolia.
When BBC shows the Super Bowl? They assume you’re enough of a grown-up to have looked up the rules and get down to discussing the damn game.
What is wrong with American tv?
It’s called the Idiocrasy of America, Tim. And I think everyone of today’s commercials supports that statement.
(Still Myra, not Hub.)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Tracy Porter’s from my school! WOOOOO!!!!
Today’s commercials make me embarrassed that I majored in marketing.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo
Most lasting impression from the Super Bowl: The Green Police
I’m going to have nightmares now.
Myra
I’m watching the Devils – Leafs game on Hulu!
Well, A Devils-Leafs game. From 1982. But Chico’s there! He’s just in net.
The Devils had a player named Carol Vadnais, that’s amazing.
Just wanted to say I am honored with such a mention on my favorite blog site :)
Glad to see the legion of Ducks is growing. Perhaps someday the stands will be filled with all different variations of Chucks!
Thanks again – and congrats on your new friend!
-Jarhead_SGT
Perhaps someday the stands will be filled with all different variations of Chucks!
That’s a great idea! An army of Chucks!
Good morning, everyone! I’m so bitter and angry today. Twice now this Winter I’ve traded Saturday shifts with co-workers only to have the days I traded away turn into snow days. So if only I hadn’t traded with my colleague, I could have had Saturday off and still gotten a comped day today! D’oh! Stupid snow. I think it’s only fair that I actually get a snow day this Wednesday with the next storm that’s heading our way. I mean, it’s only fair, right? Right?
Good morning, everyone! I am SO excited about this idea of an army of Chucks! That’s gonna be SO RAD!
And Pookie, I’m so sorry about the injustices of not getting comped snow days. I just came from a town hall meeting explaining why I’m not getting a raise this year. FUN!
Good morning, everyone! I am SO excited about this idea of an army of Chucks! That’s gonna be SO RAD!
Great idea, but why put them in the stands? I’d just replace significant portions of the line-up with them, now. I mean, it is before the trading deadline. It can be done. I think it would be an upgrade.
Sue, :^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
You know, I’d mail Boxworthy to you for a photoshoot, but I have no faith in the postal system. No faith at all. Bloody buggers keep losing my local post, let alone the international post.
Soooo Gainey’s apparently quit his job.
Great idea, Sue! Surely a line-up of 4″ felt ducks would shore up the blueline over what it’s like now!
Soooo Gainey’s apparently quit his job.
About time. He should have been fired for the Gomez trade.
Surely a line-up of 4″ felt ducks would shore up the blueline over what it’s like now!
You’d also have no excuse not to use the Flying V as an offensive formation.
About time. He should have been fired for the Gomez trade.
I don’t even like the habs but I would have fired him a couple of years ago when they had a pretty good team and he traded Huet to Montreal for basically free. His misguided faith in Carey Price has hurt them badly (and taking Gomez’s contract certainly didn’t help either :D ).
he traded Huet to Montreal
Oops, I meant traded Huet to the Caps. Although I trust in Gainey’s ability to come out on the short end of a trade he conducts with himself.
Although I trust in Gainey’s ability to come out on the short end of a trade he conducts with himself.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s funny cause it’s true.
Sigh. I know the results were not really there, and he did made some blunders (the biggest one being Gomez), but I will miss him. I loved how he behaves, how he loves his club, how he treats people, how he addresses the media. I will miss him, because he really fits with the idea I have of a GM. And also, I became a habs fan roughly at the time he became GM, so he’s the only GM I’ve had so far. It’ll feel weird not to have him around anymore.
About Huet, yeah, it was probably a mistake to trade him at that precise moment, but it was clear the habs wouldn’t resign him. He was an impending UFA, and some teams (cough cough chicago) were ready to pay him a contract the habs couldn’t afford at the time.
I’m just surprised at the timing of this. Right before the trade deadline, that’s a little weird.
Grrreg and Gainey, sittin’ in a tree…
Sigh. I know the results were not really there, and he did made some blunders (the biggest one being Gomez), but I will miss him.
Stars fans are with you. He got the Stars/ North Stars to the Stanley Cup finals 3 times in 10 years as coach and GM. He brought to Dallas Zubov, Nieuwendyk, Caronneau, Hull, and Belfour. He also wasn’t the one the shipped Niewy and Langenbrunner to—- well you know, for Arnott. He didn’t sign Guerin, etc.
Spray on bedliners finish the seems of a pickup truck’s bed most likely far better than any other bed layer alternative. Specially now that the bed liner coating coloration can match the paint of your pickup. However, bed liners appear with a number of problems. If you’re thinking of obtaining a spray liner or currently have a single, here are a couple of tips to think about.
Permanent may well not always be finest. Positive, it’s a plus to get a liner that lasts as extended as the truck, specially with a existence-time warranty. But that in no approaches indicates you get a liner that can’t be ruined. See, the ensure just implies the liner will be repaired.
Repair signifies a respray with all the accompanying hassles and time spent. And in the meantime you drive a pickup with a broken liner and maybe probabilities of a damaged bed very. The true essential to spray liner durability is the thickness of the coating. That implies liner materials can be torn apart and worn away and nevertheless the damage may not get to the bed itself.
An additional imagined you may not want to feel about is how that liner receives on the truck. The only way the liner paint will remain on is with suitable floor preparation. That signifies the paint will get sanded very aggressively. It all but receives destroyed prior to the liner coat goes on. Picture this. You get this new truck with the very carefully utilized factory paint coating and then you shell out this guy to acquire an air sander and sand the paint nearly off. Then you spray a paint finish on more than that.
That’s not essentially a negative thing, it’s just a painful considered. That’s what it will take to get that “permanent” liner.
Harm to truck beds comes as far more than just scratches very. Dents may possibly do far more harm than scrapes can genuinely. Dents definitely consider more to restoration than a few scratches. Dent defense is an additional way that liners spend for themselves. Spray coatings usually add virtually a full quarter inch to the truck’s bed thickness. That coat consists of rubber texture materials as effectively as quickly hardening paint as properly. That thickness absorbs bumps although warding off harm.
For seems a sprayed liner may be unbeatable, but for safety a low cost alternative avoids some of the problems developed in with spray.
Low cost rubber mats shield from impact much better and are quickly eliminated. With permanent liners, really nasty hauling tends to make a mess of the base and you have no choice but to both clean it out or go away it a mess. But with short-term liners, it’s an easy process to slip the mat in or out when you have to have it or when you don’t.
Yet another consideration with spray on truck’s bed liners arises when you get the value tag. A expert coating charges you large. That’s a genuine explanation to appear at other possibilities or at least to very carefully shield the liner if you already have 1.
Check out a bedliner today and see what you’re missing!
