Olympics are fun. Olympic village kinda like Philly but with slightly nicer people. Okay, much nicer people. Okay, I don’t think any Vancouverite has ever thrown batteries at Santa Claus ever in the history of the city. In fact, they’d probably trade pins with him. But… Olympics could be funner. The Ookies used to think hockey players were pretty cool but now they’re wondering why we don’t act more like ski assassins.

Hey. Are you guys going to watch the USA vs. Canada today? I know…it’s not NHL, but still…
Also, who throws batteries at Santa? Honestly?
Carol, no Olympic hockey for us. We’re enjoying a little break from hockey by watching all the other cool sports we never get to see otherwise. Plus, ice dancing!!! They’re might be some other people around here who are watching it, though.
I’m with Carol, picking ice dancing over Hockey is something that shouldn’t happen in North America. Well might be ok if the intent is shnarky costume observations.
I’ll be watching the game, but flipping to the ice dancing as needed. I can’t get over how much the one US dancer looks like Tony Reali from PTI.

::Shakes head sadly:: Man, the ice dancing is the best thing in the Olympics (short of the ski assassins. Man, I LOVE biathlon!). It’s got everything the regular figure skating does, but times a billion and with WAY more crazy. :P
Sorry ladies, Hub escaped from his cage. I’ll put him back in now. The man never saw Torvell & Dean do Bolero. That said, we will be switching back and forth.
Sorry ladies, Hub escaped from his cage. I’ll put him back in now. The man never saw Torvell & Dean do Bolero.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: What can you do? Some people just don’t understand true greatness (read: ice dancing) when they see it. :P
The man never saw Torvell & Dean do Bolero.
Hee! More importantly, did he see the craziness of the last two nights of ice dancing in Torino? :D
Will ice dancing start after the game? (Or at least be still going on?) That’s good.
I don’t know when the ice dancing is supposed to start, but I’ll give a holler when it does, if you want. When is the hockey game on?
I guess they have to pull Marty, now right? I mean he let up a goal to the Americans. That’s Canada’s only capital crime.
Hey, did you know Marty and Hasek had a dual shutout and sawed the puck in half? I love how the talking points don’t change for the Olympics.
Hey, did you know Marty and Hasek had a dual shutout and sawed the puck in half?
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Thanks for reminding me that I’m making the right choice by watching this skiing. :P (Related aside: this Norwegian downhill skier is TOTALLY foxy.)
Funfetti, eh?
Rafalski has scored both goals on Marty tonight. Zach and Langer also helped on the second goal.
Funfetti, eh?
Not if you’re cheering for the foxy Norwegian! :P
Jesus Christ. I really regret Lou not holding onto Rafalski.
Langer and Zack are showing no respect to Marty. There might need to be some Devils team building activities in a couple of weeks.
You really think Rafalski is worth the money Detroit threw at him?
There might need to be some Devils team building activities in a couple of weeks.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I think they need to do a ropes course! And play with tanagrams, like the Flyers did in their preseason thing in Whistler a few years ago. :P
I’m confused. Team Canada is supposed to conquer Team USA. What’s going on?
Hockey and Ice Dancing – dueling remotes here. I have a handicap as I am also quilting and the husband isn’t.
They are not prepared to get dirty to to win.
I happened to see a ski assassin as I was changing channels earlier, and his little shield over his scope eye had a big cartoon eye painted on it. I laughed.
Mike’s making Marge Simpson grunts and groans watching this hockey game.
Hockey and Ice Dancing – dueling remotes here. I have a handicap as I am also quilting and the husband isn’t.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Dare I ask which one of you is choosing hockey and which one is choosing ice dancing? :D
I have a handicap as I am also quilting and the husband isn’t.
Man, that’s rough! Tell him as the one who’s not getting anything constructive done, his vote counts for less! I really wish someone would invent a television that automatically mutes the commercials. I’m doing applique tonight and it’s really tough to hit the mute button on time when I’m focusing on the applique!

Your life is so hard, Pookie. JEEZ.
Okay, we fell behind on tivo delay here because it was mani-pedi time at the cat salon. Now we’re settled in again, and there are COWBOY ICE DANCERS. This is AWESOME!
Your life is so hard, Pookie. JEEZ.
I KNOW!!!
Ski Assassin is fun to watch. The standings can change fast after a round of shooting. If you only hit 90% of the targets, you have a real struggle to win.
I like Heather B’s idea of taking the penalty lap portion of Ski Assassin and transplanting it to hockey.
If you only hit 90% of the targets, you have a real struggle to win.
Yeah, that was nuts. And they’re such foxy badasses when they DO hit all the targets. I can’t get over that sport. It’s SO. DELICIOUS. :D (I loved finding out that the Norwegian superstar biathlete is a germaphobe. That’s like combining Jason Bourne and Monk.)
The shooting was especially cool in the mass start where you have all the guys shooting at once, watching the graphic with all the targets.
That’s like combining Jason Bourne and Monk.
Bourne-Monk: Bring my contact from Paris.
Pam Landy: What if I can’t find her?
Bourne-Monk: If I’m right — and I am — she’s standing right next to you.
Bourne-Monk: If I’m right — and I am — she’s standing right next to you.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Bourne-Monk: Also, you’ll thank me later.
2-1 USA at the first intermission. This is a fun game. I’m enjoying rooting for this US squad. And I’m a little scared of Toronto now… Brian Burke can put together a team.
I really don’t think Canada is ready to scrap and scrape to win. Everone on their team is a top five pick, it seems. Too many players who are used to being the most talented guys on the ice, not enough players who’ve made it by working ten times as hard as the next guy.
RE: Rafalski. Watching him here I keep getting reminded of all the things he does so well: clearing the zone, working the point. It raises the question: if Lou keeps Rafalski, there’d probably be no Malakov return, no Matvichuk, no Mottau. Is there really a price you wouldn’t pay to have not lived through that?
Brian Burke can put together a team.
… of all-stars. Toronto? Not all-stars. :P
Is there really a price you wouldn’t pay
Yes. 6 million a year. :D (I would have been very happy for Lou to keep Raffie for market value. What he’s making now is not market value for a guy like Rafalski.)
if Lou keeps Rafalski, there’d probably be no Malakov return, no Matvichuk, no Mottau. Is there really a price you wouldn’t pay to have not lived through that?
The Malakhov/Matvichuk situation was in response to losing Niedermayer. It goes without saying that I’d be THRILLED if Lou could have kept him… :D Raffie, though… not at the amount of the cap he’s taking up with the contract Detroit gave him. Sure, he’s better than Mottau (what isn’t?), but I like knowing that Lou was able to sign Travis and still have roster flexibility under the cap. :P
If I can ever figure out how to work the picture-in-picture thingy – the husband won’t know what hit him. We are hockey heavy right now, but when the ice dancing really starts spinnin’ – I will have to enforce my dominance. Besides, we don’t get msnbc in HD and I am totally spoiled. I cannot watch sports without my HD fix.

Aha! That’s what’s happening. I get it now. I couldn’t figure that out.
Also, Neidermyer is about a thousand years old.
It would have to be Drury with the go ahead goal, wouldn’t it?
Raflaski looks like he is worth $6MM so far tonight. I haven’t seen him play this good with the DT’s.
I haven’t seen him play this good with the DT’s.
Yeeeeeah. That’s another reason I’m glad Lou didn’t pay him the money. :D
esides, we don’t get msnbc in HD and I am totally spoiled. I cannot watch sports without my HD fix.
I am so with you there. Even with the curling I’m like, “I can’t see the rocks if it’s not HD!” :D (Just a heads up, the skating is supposed to start again in less than 11 minutes.)
Aw. Poor foxy Norwegian skier. :(
Well, bring on the ice dancing!
This might be the best hockey game I’ve seen the past two seasons. We’ll see how the last period shakes out.
Aw. Poor foxy Norwegian skier. :(
I love the Olympics. I’m so sad for this skiier I didn’t even know existed until, like, two days ago, and who I will completely forget about in, like, four days. :D
I’m so sad for this skiier I didn’t even know existed until, like, two days ago, and who I will completely forget about in, like, four days. :D
I know what you mean. I felt like that about some of the aerial /mogul skiers earlier this week.
My god — have these French people seen The Cutting Edge? This is the music Kate and Brian failed with in Calgary! That’s just ASKING for trouble!
My gods that was a great game. That empty-netter was a micrcosm of the differences between the teams. The Canadian is in position, is expecting to turn around and charge down for a goal. The American lays out and just wants it more.
Word, EJGRgunner.
Ouch. Dood. That smarts. Good game Team USA.
That was a fantastic game. Crunchy had this mix of shock, awe and exhaustion on his face postgame.
I ended up getting dressed and going out so I could watch that game and I’m glad I did because that game was seriously awesome. Go Crunchy!
(Good news, Devils fans, Brodeur might get his vacation after all following that game.)
(Good news, Devils fans, Brodeur might get his vacation after all following that game.)
I hope so! That’s all I ask of the NHL involvement in the Olympics — that Marty get a week off.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!! Crunchy!!!!
(Good news, Devils fans, Brodeur might get his vacation after all following that game.)
SNORT! People on twitter are calling for his head. So glad I got to see him when I did. I hope he goes underground for a little while.
I’m digging the Bollywood couple.
So, for those of us late to the ice dance party, what’s the difference between the original dance and the free dance?
I enjoyed the game except Erik Johnson’s penalty late in the 3rd. Still the USA team better be ready to beat Canada again.
Maybe Zack and Langer played hard just to try to convince Marty he needed to take some time off.
These guys are pretty amazing. Although I keep thinking she has a mask on every time I see them. I’m not sure why.
And I just have to add that Miller was amazing tonight. And yeah, Marty may be getting a little rest now.
I’m digging the Bollywood couple.
Yeah, I like them a lot.
Dude, cowboy boot skates? Have I died and gone to heaven?
So, for those of us late to the ice dance party, what’s the difference between the original dance and the free dance?
Original dance has a theme (in this case they had to pick a region/ethnicity, thus the cowboys, Bollywood, aboriginals, etc.)
Dude, cowboy boot skates? Have I died and gone to heaven?
No, but it’s the next best thing.
DON’T KILL THE MESSENGER:
Mike – “Brodeur had pantyhose on his skates tonight.”
Partner, that’s what all us Texans wear when we commence a skatin.
what’s the difference between the original dance and the free dance?
I have no idea. I have been assuming it’s sort of the ice dancing equivalent of the short program and long programs in the other versions of figure skating. Only, because it’s ice dancing, there are more rules. And more craziness. And more blackface.
I don’t get ice dancing. It’s like figure-skating, but minus all the cool parts. Why?
It’s like figure-skating, but minus all the cool parts. Why?
Unless you count ridiculousness as the main cool part.
Mike – “Brodeur had pantyhose on his skates tonight.”
Heh. Poor Marty.
Crikey, how did I miss a new post?
That game was crazy-go-nuts.
Mike – “Brodeur had pantyhose on his skates tonight.”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Wow. Those guys are perfectly in synch!
Unless you count ridiculousness as the main cool part.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Exactly! :D
And :^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to Marty’s pantyhose.
Why does this US dude always make faces like he’s performing a clown routine?
We are clearly lacking in our knowledge of Eastern European folk customs.
Partner, that’s what all us Texans wear when we commence a skatin.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Woah woah woah…those Japanese figure skaters, the Reids (Reeds?) Have a sister competing for Georgia. How does that work?
The figure skating nationality is a giant puzzle to me. The British ice dancers live in Princeton, though. That seems weird to me. When I was looking up local rinks last year when wondering whether we could enter the Kraft Hockeyville competition, I discovered there aren’t very many rinks around here. Which makes me wonder why elite-level ice dancers would move here to train. :P (I mean, granted, there are rinks here. So it doesn’t make no sense, but still…)
I thought you might like that one, Patty.
Any rink in Princeton is bound to be better than one in England.
I love that that Ghanian, the Snow Leopard, learned to ski at an indoor ski centre in Milton-Keynes. Exactly the wrong place to start an Olympic career.
I can already see tomorrow’s dispatch, from Martin Brodeur:
Olympics are fun. I get to see all my old friends again, all at the same time: Brian, Brian,
BrianLanger. Zach was there and Scotty N.’s been around. Patty and I don’t get to play in the same group, but it’s been pretty cool. The sad thing is, they won’t let me play everyday, just because we “don’t have a game” that night. And even though I’m a National Treasure, all the people here keep talking about this Italian dude that they really like. I guess Olympics could be funner.Does Marty usually throw his teammates under the bus after a loss? Based on what he said last night, it could be taken that not only did he throw them under the bus, he drove over them, reversed and did it again.
Have a sister competing for Georgia. How does that work?
I know this one thanks to Canadian TV. The Georgian dude needed a partner, so he advertised on the skating version of Match.com and the US chick answered. Because Georgian dude’s dad was head of the Georgian skating federation, her application for citizenship was shoved up the ladder faster than fast so she could compete at the Games.
Does Marty usually throw his teammates under the bus after a loss?
It depends entirely on how much he likes them. There was one playoff OT loss a few years ago that he went on and on about how the d-man had deflected it, or screened him, or something, and then he actually watched the replay and realized it was Paulie and not the scrub he originally thought he was blaming. His story immediately changed. So if he’s doing a lot of finger pointing today, then I think it’s safe to assume he’s not terribly impressed by his teammates. :P
And good morning, everyone! It’s the last week in February! For some reason, I’m very excited by this. Because my life is a thrill a minute, I think.

But then how are her brother and sister Japanese? I’m sooo confused.
So if he’s doing a lot of finger pointing today, then I think it’s safe to assume he’s not terribly impressed by his teammates. :P
Team Canada is just a big group of Ken Klees. Heh.
RIGHT! Klee! I totally couldn’t remember who it was. And considering how many times we’ve shouted “Klee!” as an insult, I’m shocked I forgot.
Well, the Devils d-corps has been like one big giant Klee all season long, so it’s easy to forget Klee and think “Mottau?”
Well, the Devils d-corps has been like one big giant Klee all season long, so it’s easy to forget Klee and think “Mottau?”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: So true. :D
It’s the last week in February!
And a short week for me! I have an offsite meeting tomorrow afternoon that might end my day early and then I took Friday off. Whoo!
Oooh, that’s some good planning there, Amy!
Hey everyone! Happy Monday!
Just wanted to say thanks to all for the congrats and well wishes. I wasn’t around this weekend, as per usual, but I went back and caught up in the comments. So, thanks again.
Also, what an incredible game for the US! Man! I can’t believe how fun that was.
And the ice dancing in blackface….just wow. We literally turned on the TV as those two were taking the ice. Tracie and I looked at each other with a synchronized WTF.
And even though I’m a National Treasure, all the people here keep talking about this Italian dude that they really like.
SNORT! That’s awesome. The only thing is, I’m a little hesitant about putting Luoooo in now. Everyone else seems to think he’ll save the day, but did you see him LAST year in the Stanley Cup playoffs? No? How about the year before that? Uh. I hope I’m wrong, but the serious under-pressure-stuff? Not his forte.
Just don’t tell anyone in Vancouver I said that, okay? Thanks.
Tracie and I looked at each other with a synchronized WTF.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I hope the judges rewarded you well for your synchronization!
And the ice dancing in blackface….just wow. We literally turned on the TV as those two were taking the ice. Tracie and I looked at each other with a synchronized WTF.
Andrew, those are actually the semi-fixed costumes. They “flesh-tone” part used to be much darker, the “paint” was more extensive, and they had paint on their faces. See:

Holy shit. That is incredible.
We ended up watching the whole routine, despite our mutual instinct to avoid ice dancing, just to see what country they were from. I don’t know why that matters, but we just had to find out. So it turns out Russians can be as hilariously inappropriate as the rest of us. Good to know.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Having known quite a few Russians in my day, and having been to Moscow, if I hadn’t known beforehand that they were the Russians, that would have been my first guess. Heh.

Said what? Did someone say something?

There’s an Ovechkin joke in there somewhere, I just can’t find it.
Those aboriginal costumes were AMAZING. That’s another reason why sports without uniforms are so fabulous. :D

Probably because he just elbowed you in the head. :P
So if he’s doing a lot of finger pointing today, then I think it’s safe to assume he’s not terribly impressed by his teammates. :P
True. But, I’d feel better about Marty in this case if he’d just up and admit that he wasn’t much help last night. OK, so, his defense wasn’t much help either. But, the trapezoid has done its work, nobody expects the goalie to play the puck the way Marty, Turco and Belfour used to play it, except, of course, Rafalski, which I don’t think is what Marty has in mind (hint: you aren’t passing to him anymore). If they have any sense they are going to sit him anyway. Might as well admit he was also at fault, face reality and take a seat, well, semi-graciously. Gives him more time to eat.
Someone needs to remind Zach and Jaime that they need to play like this after the Olympics end. Apparently Captain FTS decided to make an appearance now. Where’s he been for the last month and a half?
Marty seemed so excited about not having a trapezoid, he was like a puppy that’s just had it’s neuter-cone taken off.
I know this isn’t twitter, but this is the general consensus of the hockey folks out here:
RT @Kardboard: Merci. RT @AzureMoak: Ferraro just stated he would start Luongo against Germany & all of BC agrees #van2010 #luongo #tnmh

Are you glad or worried, Carol? :D
Y’all, it’s going to snow 3 more inches tomorrow! I’ve been trying to schedule the stupid tree guy and tomorrow was the day he was coming! I’m gonna be the last person in town to get their live oak trimmed after that last disaster.
And that’s my story.
Patty, that’s a terrible story! Your poor live oak! (And seriously, MORE snow? What is going ON here?) We were supposed to get a “snow event” tomorrow, too, but now they’re just calling for rain. But four more inches of snow on Friday. Like your live oak trimming, our lettuce is never going to grow at this rate! :P
Are you glad or worried, Carol? :D
Worried. :-(
And I’m very sorry about your live oak. That stinks. Also, snow in Texas? I don’t get it.

I KNOW! And this will be, like, the fourth one this winter. It’s crazy. We could have had the Winter Olympics here, if they had timed it juuuuuuuuuust right. And if they came from the future in a time machine and could tell us we’d get a foot of snow at one time.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: And if you guys had mountains. That’s all you need! That, and this paddleball game…
I get the feeling all this Texan snow is Jerry Jones doing black magick to get the Winter Classic in Dallas, but that’s a plan that will just end in tears, like most deals with the devil.

We could do like Vancouver and use nearby mountains. Big Bend is only 8 short hours away!
