Olympics could not have been funner! My season-long plan to pretend to have a broken arm worked to perfection. No one knows that I’ve been spending the year as my alter-ego, “Charlie White”. Sure, “Charlie” didn’t win gold, but I got to fulfill my dream of being a world class ice dancer. Sure, my coaches and partner nixed my suggestion to perform my original choreography, “Arise Young Gophers”, and sure, I had to pretend to go to Michigan for a year, but it was so worth it. Did you see me rocking the Bollywood stuff? I KNOW! I rock. But, Olympics could have been funner, I suppose. They could keep going on until summertime, so I wouldn’t have to spend the next few months continuing to pretend my arm is broken.

Paulie Martin has the brokenest broken arm in history, doesn’t he? I guess it’s kind of nice that he puts his all into everything he does…
I guess it’s kind of nice that he puts his all into everything he does…
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I suppose that’s a silver lining… But yeah, there has NEVER been a brokener arm than Paulie’s. I wonder if it fell completely off and they’re just not telling us?
When you were telling me you were sure that was Paulie, I was just not getting it. All I could see was the hair. But when they were on the podium, I became convinced it’s Paulie, too. It would not be hard to grow his hair out that much while he’s been waiting for his arm to heal. I think Bone Up makes your hair grow faster anyway.
I wonder if it fell completely off and they’re just not telling us?
What they didn’t tell you was that it fell off the first time, but that the reattachment with spit, duct tape and bubble gum didn’t work, thus necessitating a second reattachment.
And Blime Warner just ran a commercial for another made-for-TV sequel to The Cutting Edge. How are they going to rip off the movie this time?
He’s definitely afraid of Meryl Davis. Hell, she frightens me.
Amy, ever see the Cutting Edge 2 with Christy Carlson Romano? So unintentionally funny.
Good morning, everybody! WOO HOOOO!!!! It’s a snow day for me!!!! (It’s only a delayed opening for Pookie.)
We’ve been seeing the commercials for Cutting Edge 4 during “Make It Or Break It”, and it’s kind of hard to believe they’ve managed to find another set-up for the Cutting Edge convention. I mean, how many more winter sports can the fish-out-of-water character have come from before they just run out completely and go back to the hockey player conceit? :D
I think Bone Up makes your hair grow faster anyway.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Paulie didn’t need the help growing the fluffiest, puffiest head of hair imaginable, so the Bone Up created a monster!
I mean, how many more winter sports can the fish-out-of-water character have come from before they just run out completely and go back to the hockey player conceit?
Apparently, this time it’s a speedskater teamed up with a hockey player. Not that I went and looked it up or anything.
Ugh. That should be speedskater teamed up with figure skater. This is what happens when you’re distracted by your father talking about the Canadian women’s hockey team running afoul of the IOC.
I’m glad to see that the Ookies didn’t lose power during the Snowicane. And Yeah for the snow day!
Poor Paulie, I’m starting to forget what he looks like. But that is probably more my old age senility.
I have to admit I have never seen any of the Cutting Edge movies or the Rob Lowe one or Slap Shot. I am a terrible hockey fan when it comes to hockey movies. I do actually own Miracle and the ESPN special on Miracle on Ice.
I’m such an old lady that I fell asleep before the women’s figure skating came on and slept right through it. I don’t know when I have missed the long program for the Olympics. Getting old stinks.
And Dave as a phone interview with HR for another job today at 9am. So keep fingers crossed.
the Canadian women’s hockey team running afoul of the IOC.
After my sister’s experiences with the NOCNSF (Holland’s branch of the IOC) I’m inclined to treat the IOC with marked contempt. What a bunch of pencil pushing douche rockets.
Myra, even if you do nothing else hockey related ever again you MUST see Cutting Ege. MUST! But meh Slapshot. *whispers* I didn’t think it was that funny. I’ve never actually watched the whole movie in one sitting.
So keep fingers crossed.
On it!
Women’s Canadian Hockey team went back out on the ice in full uniform drinking champagne and beer and smoking cigars. The pictures are kinda comical but I don’t think the IOC thought so. I guess pics of drunken cigar smoking women in Canadian unis on IOC ice with at least one underage member, is probably not real good for their image.
Oooh, good luck to Dave! I have a very good feeling about this interview!
Myra, I stayed awake for the figure skating last night, but I might as well have been asleep. It was nowhere NEAR as interesting as the stuff that preceded it. Stupid “ladies” being totally boring compared to the men and pairs. Grumble grumble grumble.
And I’ve seen the real Cutting Edge, the second one (it was unwatchably bad), and Slapshot, and can only recommend the first of that list. I do NOT get the Slapshot thing AT ALL. It does absolutely nothing for me, and I’m not afraid to admit it as a hockey fan!
probably not real good for their image.
Meh, if they were so concerned for their image, they shouldn’t be trying to suck all the fun and spontaneity out of sports. You can’t regulate human celebration. Trying to do so undermines the very essence of the act. It cheapens winning, when you have to keep the brakes on the happiness that comes from doing so.
Good luck, Dave! ::crosses fingers::
I agree about “Slap Shot”. I just don’t really get it at all. But “The Cutting Edge” is the greatest movie of all time.
Hee. Mags, this is the IOC we are talking about, I don’t think fun, spontaneity or happiness are part of their vocabulary.
I’m guessing it’s that they came back out on the ice is what they have a problem with. Since we know that and more goes on in the dressing rooms.
I’m guessing it’s that they came back out on the ice is what they have a problem with.
Heh. Yeah. :D
Mags, this is the IOC we are talking about, I don’t think fun, spontaneity or happiness are part of their vocabulary.
Tell me about it *mumblegrumblehavetobe5ft10tobeselectedjezuswhatnormalwomanisthattallmumblegrumble*
I’m guessing it’s that they came back out on the ice is what they have a problem with.
The IOC clearly didn’t listen to their Mama’s lessons about “Sharing is caring”.
Women’s Canadian Hockey team went back out on the ice in full uniform drinking champagne and beer and smoking cigars.
Good for them.
I generally don’t get Slapshot. But I love the bit where the goalie explains the penalties. That 30 seconds? Genius. The rest of the movie? Not so much.
Also, I have a jury-duty snow day but not an actual employment snow day. I’m not sure what this means for my second day of jury duty though.
Jury duty is totally wimpy! That, or your regular office is way hardcore, Meg. :D
Hey, I liked Slap Shot! I’m terrified of the re-make though, that’s going to be evil.
I’ve never seen Cutting Edge. Something tells me the enjoyment of these two movies might have something to do with gender, judging by the Cutting Edge poster.
I don’t think the Canadian women took their celebrating far enough, if anything. Where are the roman candle fights?
Hah, my office wishes!
I think it’s just that my office is allowed to say “come in if it’s feasible for you” while for jury duty it’s an all or nothing proposition. The sidewalks are pretty bad here today. I slipped and fell right on my butt this morning just outside my building and while that’s totally fine for me it would be a lot less fine for an elderly lady with osteoporosis.
I enjoy Slap Shot quite a bit. But then again, it’s one of those movies that I kind of grew up with. So I know that changes ones perception. My best friend and I quote it all the time. I’m a firm believer in the fact that the more you quote a movie the funnier it gets.
I haven’t seen the Cutting Edge in a long time. Since way before I was a hockey fan. I remember it being okay. I laugh now days in retrospect at the guy who tells D.B. Sweeney that no team in the NHL, not even the Red Wings, want him. The Red Wings…the lowest of the low. Awesome.
I slipped and fell right on my butt this morning just outside my building
Ouch! You okay? What a way to start a Friday.
Ouch! You okay? What a way to start a Friday.
Oh, absolutely fine. Hurt nothing but my ego. Actually it was pretty funny…probably looked like a pratfall.
Dave Update! His interview was with the Plant Manager instead of HR and about an hour after their phone interview the guy called back and asked Dave to come in on Monday for a personal interview! YEAH!!!
That’s great, Myra! I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
GO DAVE! That’s great news :D
Oh, absolutely fine. Hurt nothing but my ego.
Gotcha. Well, glad to hear everything’s okay.
the guy called back and asked Dave to come in on Monday for a personal interview! YEAH!!!
Go Dave! Woo! Kick that interview’s ass!
Go Dave!
no team in the NHL, not even the Red Wings, want him
I can’t think of what that team would be today: the Thrashers? The Bolts? The Oilers? All have good cases to be considered the doldrums of the NHL.
I can’t think of what that team would be today: the Thrashers? The Bolts? The Oilers?
If there’s a God in comedy heaven, it’d be the Maple Leafs.
WOOOOOOO! Congratulations to Dave! I have a GREAT feeling about this interview now!! :D
I can’t think of what that team would be today: the Thrashers? The Bolts? The Oilers?
If there’s a God in comedy heaven, it’d be the Maple Leafs.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: And yeah, we’ve tittered every time we’ve seen the Cutting Edge (and that’s A LOT of times) at the suggestion that if the Wings won’t take you, you’re completely worthless. Heh. (You’re absolutely right, andrew, that the more times you quote a movie, the funnier it gets.)
If there’s a God in comedy heaven, it’d be the Maple Leafs.
So true. But I think once Burke straightens them out, they’ll be a force to reckon with.
WOOO, GO DAVE!
Sorry about your fall, Meg!
So my library had a delayed opening until 1, but after considering that it mean me driving two hours just to work four (only one of which I was even remotely needed for) I decided to take vacation instead. I was still feeling really, really guilty about it… until my friend from work emailed to say that she’d driven all the way over there at 12:50 only to discover the parking lot wasn’t plowed. 5 minutes later HQ called to say the library wasn’t going to open. Can I just tell you I am so glad I didn’t spend two hours in the car to discover the office was closed!
This hockey game is completely insane!
This hockey game is completely insane!
It is! Absolutely completely mental.
But I think once Burke straightens them out, they’ll be a force to reckon with.
Amy, are you saying that with a straight face? Not…sure…if…serious….
Amy, are you saying that with a straight face? Not…sure…if…serious….
I never said how long it would take.
I know this is going to do damage to my status as a proponent of NHL participation in the Olympics but…
CAN WE HAVE OUR HOCKEY BACK NOW?!
Mags, I’m kinda with you. But I’m too nervous about today’s Gold Medal game to know for sure. :D
I’d better be able to find a feed for the game, or someone gonna get a hurt real bad.
I think the NHL is back tomorrow. Nearly…there….
CAN WE HAVE OUR HOCKEY BACK NOW?!
Tomorrow!
Safety tip of the day: Don’t let a cat sit in your lap while watching a tense game. Because when Parise scores in the final seconds of the third to tie it up, jumping and shouting can lead to bloody legs.
Holy crap. I’m pretty sure if a Canadian were to make a cheesy sports movie, that’s exactly what it would have been.
CAN WE HAVE OUR HOCKEY BACK NOW?!
Yes we can! WOOOOO!!! I am so ready for it now, but I did thoroughly enjoy the 2-week break of ski assassins. That marathon today was freakin’ awesome. And I’m glad those of you who were watching the hockey got to see a great tournament! Everyone wins!*
*Except Ovechkin. Heh heh heh.
Woah. Rafalski’s head is tiny.
The ski marathon today was awesome. I did like the skating exhibition last night where the Canadian ice dance pair skated to both classical music and C&C Music Factory. That was made of win.
Zach’s body language at the medal ceremony reminded me of a five-year-old who didn’t get his way. It was kind of adorable.
And I think I have to stop picking on Crunchy for a bit. He about did me in post-game.
That marathon today was freakin’ awesome.
It was fantastic. I love cross-country skiing. Who knew? Certainly not me. Also, that classic stuff looks way harder than the freestyle. I don’t think I could a hundred meters of that.
And I think I have to stop picking on Crunchy for a bit. He about did me in post-game.
Seriously. Buck up, Crunchy. It’s not like anyone was expecting you to wind up with a silver going into it.
I was about to say, hopefully this will give Crunchy the motivation he needs to get us a Stanley Cup, but if I remember correctly, he was one of the only Sabres who was consistently motivated. *sigh* Bring on March hockey…
I don’t think I could a hundred meters of that.
I don’t think I could get past the starting line! I love the shots that show how steep the hills are. I’m going to miss the cross country skiing and biathalon so much!
I’m going to miss the cross country skiing and biathalon so much!
I’m going to miss down hill skiing. 1. Because I like it and 2. because Julia Mancuso didn’t get smacked across the face with a gate like I had hoped.
I love the shots that show how steep the hills are.
Yeah, it would definitely have to be a flat 100 meters. Or maybe downhill (except then I’d fall on those skinny little things).
I’m so with you about Mancuso, mcguffers. That stupid tiara shit is shit. Heh. I’m going to miss the downhill because Aksel Lund Svindal is hot.
I won’t miss seeing Lindsay Vonn all over my TV set. Can you say “overexposure?” I will miss Apollo Ohno for sure.
And how did I miss Getzi’s bald spot before? Instead of his shirt falling off, he should be worried about his hair falling off.
I’m going to miss Norwegian hockey players.
Tore Vikingstadt and the Hobbit Wizard will always be in my hearts.
That stupid tiara shit is shit.
Word. I hate her celebrations too. I’m always like, “Aaaaand that’s why everyone hates Americans.”
I’m always like, “Aaaaand that’s why everyone hates Americans.”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeeeeeeeah.
Hi guys!
Ready for hockey tomorrow?
Well, now I know who Crunchy is and, man, I’m a huge Rick Nash, Shea Webber and Getzi fan! W00T!
Good game, USA. And I have to say, I don’t enjoy watching the home team playing against Kesler. He’s BRUTAL. And a little mean.
*Except Ovechkin. Heh heh heh.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: MWA HAHAHA!
And I have to say, I don’t enjoy watching the home team playing against Kesler. He’s BRUTAL. And a little mean.
He’s the CLASSIC guy you hate when he’s the opposition and love when he’s on your team. Because before he was on my team I hated him and now I think I love him. :D
*Except Ovechkin. Heh heh heh.
Which means I win twice!
Dear Ookies,
Can we borrow Zach and maybe keep him forever?
Love,
Sabres
I like the idea of Canada’s sweaters, but the boob moose really don’t help matters.
And I’m glad to see Crunchy walking in the ceremonies and being happy and smiley.
Poor, poor Crunchy killed me. But as much as I wished that Goose had made the team so he’d be there to cheer him up… I think I love Chris Drury again. Whoops.
Dear Ookies,
Can we borrow Zach and maybe keep him forever?
Love,
Sabres
Dear Sabres,
You had your chance but took Vanek instead. Live with it.
Love,
Ookies
the boob moose really don’t help matters.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Is the Russian national anthem really 34 minutes long?
I get that the closing ceremonies aren’t very interesting but cutting into them to premier a stupid reality show is really annoying. NBC is the stupidest broadcast network ever.
I get that the closing ceremonies aren’t very interesting but cutting into them to premier a stupid reality show is really annoying.
Especially because they cut back to Nickelback and Avril Lavigne. We could have skipped that and just replayed the 20 ft beavers dancing with the 35 ft mounties.
Is it just me or is Getzi’s bald spot conquering new territory by the hour?
Especially because they cut back to Nickelback and Avril Lavigne. We could have skipped that and just replayed the 20 ft beavers dancing with the 35 ft mounties.
Yeah…I did not realize that’s what was coming up. Oh, Canada, surely you could have done better than that.
I get that the closing ceremonies aren’t very interesting but cutting into them to premier a stupid reality show is really annoying.
And especially since it was such a clunky hand off to Seinfeld’s show. Although, from what I’ve read this morning, the inflatable beavers might have been better TV than the Marriage Ref.
And are we all ready for March hockey and trades and all that fun stuff?
Hey friends,
Please be thinking of Dave today. He was supposed to be going to his big exciting interview today but instead he is going to the doctor with what we hope is only Bell’s Palsy. The whole left side of his face has gone numb. His eye won’t close and he is slurring pretty badly. We spoke to our nurse practitioner last night (personal friend) and she assured us it’s not a stroke. Dave is so upset. Poor guy.
The interviewer said they could reschedule for next week.
Yikes, Myra, I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m glad to hear that. I’m glad that the interviewer was willing to reschedule and will be keeping my fingers crossed that whatever’s wrong with Dave is easily treatable and he recovers quickly.
Although, from what I’ve read this morning, the inflatable beavers might have been better TV than the Marriage Ref.
I watched the first marriage dispute and it was terrible. Not even a little bit funny and totally pointless. Then I turned off the TV and did the dishes instead.
Oh, no! I’m hoping the best for Dave! I’m so glad the interview rescheduled for him.
I’m glad to hear that. I’m glad that the interviewer was willing to reschedule
Ugh, the was supposed to all be one sentence indicating that I’m glad the interview will be rescheduled. Obviously I shouldn’t post (or speak for that matter) before 10.
Thanks guys. I’ll update after we go to the doctor. I just feel so bad for him. Sigh.
Oh Dave! I’m so sorry. Get well soon!
I’ll understand if nobody cares, but I haven’t stopped grinning since I woke up. Being this cheerful is pretty excellent.
And what, pray tell, are you so cheery about, Mags? :P
Why, Meg, I’m cheery about the weather! It was warm enough that I didn’t have to wear a coat today! Just a sweater and a hockey jersey. And I needed sunglasses to be able to see! It was the sunnies that pushed me into grinning stupidly, I think ;)
Myra & Dave, thoughts are with the both of you today.
It was the sunnies that pushed me into grinning stupidly, I think ;)
Yeah, that first nice weather of spring/near-spring is the best.
That’s awesome, Mags! Our yard is overrun with Spring-sounding birds, and the sun is shining like it’s March! Spring is so close!
Spring is so close!
I know! Our national weather service tells us we have at least one, maybe two, more winter storms coming our way until it’s really spring. But I think I’ll find a way of dealing with that. *twitches* Want. Spring. Now.
Myra, my fingers and toes are crossed for Dave. So glad to hear they would reschedule the interview.
I’m thinking good thoughts for Dave. Poor guy. Good to hear the interviewer can reschedule.
Oh, and last night we found a new nickname for Nickelback (BARF) on twitter -
Picklesack
See? That’s much better. Nickelback stinks.
Nickelback stinks.
Their cover of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” is pretty good. That’s about the only Nickelback song I like.
You kind of knew this one was coming – Pretty Ricky is “out indefinitely” with swelling in his knee. So, how many games did he play this year? The Isles must be thrilled.
Oh my god, Myra, I hope Dave is okay! How scary and awful! (But I’m glad that the interview could be rescheduled for him.) Please keep us updated!
