We had grand plans to go out for a fancy dinner tonight to avoid this game, but inertia settled in so here we are, in front of the television for the puck drop on what should be the final game of the season. Join us for an open thread and a rousing game of “Pin The Jelly Jar On The Donkey”.

This game is already following the script, isn’t it?
My internet is crap right now. So I just have to sit here and imagine how bad it’s going.
Have you seen the previous four games? Because this one has been EXACTLY the same as all of those. It was like the condensed plot explanations at the starts of TV shows, you know, “Previously on ‘Devils vs. Flyers’”. Let’s see… early stupid penalty by the Flyers? Check. Shitty power play by the Devils? Check. Missed opportunity (by Zach) with a wide-open net? Check. Unforgivably terrible offensive-zone penalty to end the PP? Check. Flyers scoring on their PP about a nanosecond after it starts? Check. Long shot of Langer looking like an asshole? Check. That’s this series in a nutshell!
For the teensiest, tiniest moment I had this thought process driving home: “The stupid fucking fuckheads are going to win tonight just to prolong the misery. Then they’ll win the next game because it would just be stupid to have to keep watching them. But then… Heeeey, wait a minute, it would be hiiiiiiilarious if they managed to come back after being down 3-1 to the Flyers again! HAHAHAHAHA!” I, uh, guess that’s why I just keep coming back every year, huh. I’m just that stupid.
uh, hi Ookies. Don’t worry, I think the Devils have this one in the bag. Maybe they should put your other goalie in?
I, uh, guess that’s why I just keep coming back every year, huh. I’m just that stupid.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The Devils are like a drug. A terrible, terrible drug. Kids, don’t make the same mistakes in life that I have!
Don’t worry, I think the Devils have this one in the bag. Maybe they should put your other goalie in?
He couldn’t possibly be worse!
So was there any damn thing that was at all damn good about the first period? I caught the last two minutes.
Nope. There was not a single damn thing that was at all damn good.
There was no sign of Bobby Holik on the ice. That’s a positive!
Hey! You’re right, Pookie!
I’m starting to get the sinking feeling that Kovalchuk isn’t going to take a discount to re-sign with the Devils. (Maybe he could insist that he’ll only re-sign if Langer is shipped out. That’s a trade-off I’m willing to make!)
*finger crossed* Not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow not Tebow.
I just got home from work to find my mother working on a poster(!), junior-high style, on the history of Phi Beta Whatever for some sorority shindig. It was one of those things where I needed to leave the room immediately lest I start openly chortling. She is also spread out all over the kitchen, so I suppose I’ll be eating… not tonight.
That is so cute, Kathleen! Not the part that you’re not eating tonight, of course. :P
Can we just end the game now?
“Previously on ‘Devils vs. Flyers’”.
I loved your recap. Wish it weren’t so accurate.
Oh, and I have to share that I had the WORST dream while napping this afternoon. I dreamed that I was home from work, and sitting around, stitching and watching TV for hours, BUT I WAS STILL WEARING MY WORK CLOTHES. I woke up in a cold sweat. The mere thought of not being in my leisure pants the instant I get in the door is just AWFUL.
And yes, Devils, that dream was more awful than you giving up another goal here, BECAUSE I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU ANYMORE. Heh.
I looked up at Giroux just then and thought it was Soupy for a minute.
Can we just end the game now?
No worries. It’s over.
I loved your recap. Wish it weren’t so accurate.
Hee! It’s not my recap — the Devils were the ones expertly editing all the essential storylines of this series into one three-and-a-half-minute stretch. :P
From my brain to Buddy Nix’s: Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy. Colt McCoy.
Who the fuck is C.J. Spiller???
I hate the Bills.
Mike Keenan has as much personality as my mop, but Ron Duggay looks like my mop.
Wait, Mike Keenan has more personality than John Stevens but at least John Stevens is pretty to look at.
And yes, I have nothing left to say about the actual games on. I’m not sure I’ll be watching any of the second round, since it appears that none of my cute little boyfriend teams are going to make it.
Ouch. Dave, let’s see how the Pens are doing.
I think the Devils decided not to prolong the agon.y You should thank them(…?)
What are the odds that one of the Flyers playing in their first playoff game score a goal on Marty? Happens all the time in the regular season so why not rub salt in the wounds.
The Nashville broadcast has a Hollywood Squares graphic of the Chicago lines. Heh.
Myra, I have to agree — John Stevens has been a questionable choice for a studio analyst. I mean, zzzzzzzzz…
And hey! No worries about not watching during the next round — we won’t be either! :D
I’m very appreciative of the Devils just ending this swiftly for us. Because it means I get to start my Meadowsweet quilt project! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Happens all the time in the regular season so why not rub salt in the wounds.
Yeah, exactly.
The wonderful change in coaching strategy has been to put Colin White in front of the net on the PP. Are you kidding me? That is all JL could think of?
Wait, Mike Keenan has more personality than John Stevens but at least John Stevens is pretty to look at.
The last time John Stevens was on Versus it was while I was at work. Schnookie kept IMing me (uh… I promise I’m a very dedicated employee! I stayed 30 minutes late today doing a big mail merge job!) that he was unbelievably awful. I was like, “Not Coach Foxy! He couldn’t possibly be that bad!” Wow. He’s… way worse than that bad.
Re: Stevens: Remember, Comcast owns Versus and the Flyers. He has to do something for all the money they are still paying him after firing him earlier this season.
The wonderful change in coaching strategy has been to put Colin White in front of the net on the PP. Are you kidding me? That is all JL could think of?
Lemaire’s like, “Thow a jelly jar at me, will you? For that, Lou, I’ll throw a jelly jar in front of the net on our PP! TAKE THAT!”
I’m so sorry about your game. That BLOWS!
Chico: “This is going to be a very interesting intermission for Zach Parise and his teammates.” Pause. “Because they’re kinda losing hope.”
Us: “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!”
I’m sorry about the Devils. I kept saying this afternoon that the way the media was carrying on about the Caps, Pens, Flyers & Pens all making the second round meant that some team would throw a monkey wrench into the plans. Somehow, I think the Devils missed that memo.
Somehow, I think the Devils missed that memo.
I think they missed the memo that the playoffs started.
And thanks for the sympathy, guys.
Chico: “This is going to be a very interesting intermission for Zach Parise and his teammates.” Pause. “Because they’re kinda losing hope.”
Us: “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!”
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I was horrified when I first heard John Stevens. But then I realized that he sounded just like what I was always calling him. An accountant.
I really don’t want Philly to win. Carcillo? Richards? Pronger? that team is filled with grossness and douchiness.
Patrick Sharp is in the penalty box. Quick! Somebody call a penalty on me!
Wait, I’m confused. I thought someone high-sticked Kopecky? Why is a Blackhawk in the box?
I hate hockey.
I was horrified when I first heard John Stevens. But then I realized that he sounded just like what I was always calling him. An accountant.
It’s always a shock to hear coaches. Kings fans had to deal with Andy Murray then Marc Crawford (nails on a chalkboard!). Terry Murray is a huge improvement, if you don’t fall asleep while he’s talking.
that team is filled with grossness and douchiness.
Better than listlessness and heartlessness like a certain other team playing tonight I can think of. Grrrr…
Better than listlessness and heartlessness like a certain other team playing tonight I can think of. Grrrr…
But you have Parise!! Just thinking of him makes me smile and think of flowers blooming in the springtime.
then Marc Crawford (nails on a chalkboard!)
I’ll take John Stevens over Marc Crawford any day. (I’m a Stars fan, btw, kms2.)
I really don’t want Philly to win. Carcillo? Richards? Pronger? that team is filled with grossness and douchiness.
kms, I felt the same way, then I read/watched this:
http://interchangeableparts.wordpress.com/2009/04/16/micd-up-wherein-the-flyers-blow-our-minds/
Mike Richards is ADORABLE! He’s not dirty, he just has the questionable judgment of a natural blonde. The Flyers are hilariously dysfunctional. It’s a joy to watch.
Oh, and you just know that it’s only a matter of time before Pronger wrestles the C away from Beaker, possibly in a bloody coup. I might not like the result, but I’m still making popcorn.
Oh Patrick Sharp, I love you. So of course, I missed that goal.
Kathleen, I’m so glad we were able to help someone else see the light about Mike Richards! He’s such a dear. Unlike every single Devil.
oh Myra, I’m so sorry! I couldn’t believe the Stars hired him last year. Such a bad a decision. But isn’t his voice awful!?
Patrick Sharp is in the penalty box. Quick! Somebody call a penalty on me!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It doesn’t matter if the Flyers make it to the next round, they’re not going to have any players left to play another opponent!
But you have Parise!! Just thinking of him makes me smile and think of flowers blooming in the springtime.
Yeah, we have Parise. How many points does he have this series? How many points did he have in last year’s first-round loss? Listen, I love Zach to death and there are only a very small handful of players on other teams I’d take over him, but dude. DUDE. He has been INVISIBLE in this series. I really think Langer’s a bad influence. Zach and Travis haven’t shown any of the hard work that drives their offense.
He’s such a dear. Unlike every single Devil.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s so true. ::Glares at the Devils:: Stupid fuckers.
Patrick Sharp is in the penalty box. Quick! Somebody call a penalty on me!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
oh Myra, I’m so sorry! I couldn’t believe the Stars hired him last year. Such a bad a decision. But isn’t his voice awful!?
Yep. His voice is skreechie awful. Nothing like sweet low mellow tones of our beloved Dave Tippett.
Patty and I are still in mourning.
It doesn’t matter if the Flyers make it to the next round, they’re not going to have any players left to play another opponent!
It also doesn’t matter because their next opponent isn’t going to make Boucher look as good as the Devils have.
Mike Richards is ADORABLE! He’s not dirty, he just has the questionable judgment of a natural blonde
just watched the video and (to no one’s surprise) you’re right, he is adorable!! awww…this is why I need to spend more time here, so I can learn more about the Eastern Conf players.
He has been INVISIBLE in this series.
Zach is your Tim Connolly, great in the season, but becomes damn near invisible in the postseason. Next he’ll be running into the changing room to avoid having to deal with the media in postgame interview scrums.
this is why I need to spend more time here, so I can learn more about the Eastern Conf players.
It’s very important to engage in cultural exchanges like this! There are all kinds of foxy gems in the opposite conferences! :D
Next he’ll be running into the changing room to avoid having to deal with the media in postgame interview scrums.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Zach would never miss a chance to whine to the media about how mean the fans are to him. :P

Zach would never miss a chance to whine to the media about how mean the fans are to him. :P
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I just remembered that recently I read an article somewhere (ESPN, yahoo, ??) that criticized Mike Richards for not being diplomatic with and accessible to the media after a loss. And how Chris Pronger had to step up and essentially cover for Richards. And now after watching that video of Richards, I just want to elbow Pronger in the head for trying to make Richards look bad! How dare he!!
And how Chris Pronger had to step up and essentially cover for Richards.
See, I TOLD YOU SO.
One final note on the season now that it is over. I can’t believe the Devils drew the only team they struggled against all season in the top 8. Third year in a row (Canes and Rangers). Although they certainly didn’t deserve anything better the way the played, it shows how a lot of the Playoffs is just plain old luck. I just can’t fathom that the Senators or Bruins or Canadians would have beaten the Devils, let alone this handily.
And how Chris Pronger had to step up and essentially cover for Richards.
After the Olympics, when the Flyers were struggling in the stretch run, Pronger started avoiding the media and Beaks really stepped up. So no worries! Beaks has asserted his hold on the C!
I just can’t fathom that the Senators or Bruins or Canadians would have beaten the Devils, let alone this handily.
Based on how little pressure the Devils have put on Boucher, I can see a goalie like Rask EASILY beating them. As for Montreal, you gotta think that Gomez and Gionta would prove to be fatal to the Devils. And Ottawa? The Devils have a long and sordid history of losing to inferior Senators teams. I think a first-round loss was inevitable. In the end, the Devils’ biggest problem is the Devils. :P
I just can’t fathom that the Senators or Bruins or Canadians would have beaten the Devils, let alone this handily.
I dunno. This series has really proven the Devils are just flat-out a bad team.
Who decided it’d be a good idea to win that fateful Sunday against the Sabres? One little loss would’ve set us up against the Bruins, who maybe we could’ve beaten (read: not lost as embarrassingly to,) seeing as we didn’t crap in our pants every time we played them during the regular season. But no, no, they were striving for home ice for TWO rounds. Do you think anyone realized that keeping home ice in the second round required WINNING the first round? No? I don’t think so either.
Oi Noi. Sorry Dev’s fans. Time for the unhappy handshake club to start.
Um, yeah, you guys are retroactively welcome to the Bruins. I feel like such an ass for being happy we ended up with them. What was I thinking? The Sabres actually do pretty well against the Flyers.
Please tell me that Chico was not serious when he suggested that if the Devils could just get one, then who knows? There’s “optimistic”, and then there’s “what the eff are you on and won’t you please share”?
Please tell me that Chico was not serious when he suggested that if the Devils could just get one, then who knows?
That was some classic Chico right there. There’s a reason I am LOSE MY MIND every time I have to listen to him call a game.
And honestly. I feel the same way the Devils seemed to during this series — summer couldn’t come fast enough. Good riddance.
I knew you Ookies would be ever pessimistic about the Devils chances against the other teams but I thought I’d throw it out there anyway.
I was at that last game with my friend who is a Sabres fan and knew they shouldn’t have won. And he is distraught that the Bruins have the Sabres number.
How fast does JL resign? Tonight? Tomorrow? You have to think there was more to that end of season controversy than meets the eye. No excuse to quit on coach but still, I’d like to know what actually happened.

Condolences, and I hope the Devils think long and hard about what they’ve done.
I knew you Ookies would be ever pessimistic
Who, me? :D
Well, welcome to Summer, Devils fans! Here’s to a big shake-up off-season!
No excuse to quit on coach but still, I’d like to know what actually happened.
Of course, they always quit on the coach. This isn’t the first time it’s happened to Lemaire! :D
Condolences, and I hope the Devils think long and hard about what they’ve done.
Thanks Kathleen. If recent history is any indication, they won’t think long and hard about it, but whatevs. I’m not going to either. :P
Condolences Devs fans. Might I interest you in a Giroux sweater to wear for the rest of the playoffs? ;)
Also Lamaire resigns tomorrow, Kovalsuck will go to the KHL next season, and Lappy might never play hockey again. I watched that block on my DVR a few times and I really think he is going to lose an eye… :(
All you Devils fans can come sit by us Stars fans.
I need ice cream before Sens/Pens OT. Sigh.
Thanks for the sympathy, Carol and Kathleen.
Tim, that about says it. Only my sad faces have sterner, disapproving eyebrows.

If it’s any consolation, my Dad was SHOCKED by the possibility of the Flyers upsetting the Devils.
Only my sad faces have sterner, disapproving eyebrows.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::
Although part of me is relieved the nightmare is over, the other part of me says I have to wait 5+ months for another Devils game.
Sorry ookies.
Thanks, Tram! I hope we’re not bad luck for your Wings. :D
Although part of me is relieved the nightmare is over, the other part of me says I have to wait 5+ months for another Devils game.
Man, being a sports fan kind of sucks, doesn’t it? Heh.
Nooie, I just saw the block on the Versus highlights. That looked harsh. I really hope he’s ok. It still boggles my mind that these guys willingly throw themselves into the path of a frozen rubber disc that’s flying through the air.
Peter Regin, articulate in 2nd language and dimples. Like.
It does suck. Part of me wishes they would just get it over with too and not prolong the pain. How sad are we.
i’m trying to figure out which was was worse…last years stunning last minute loss in game seven to carolina or this year’s five game debacle with the flyers…i can’t decide which is more unsettling…
Tim, that about says it. Only my sad faces have sterner, disapproving eyebrows.

i can’t decide which is more unsettling…
It’s a tough call, isn’t it? I feel like I’m unsettled by the cumulative effect of the two, following the debacle against the Rangers. I thought that was rock bottom, and that the Devils actually meant it when they said they’d learned their lesson. But apparently they’re just a bunch of LIARS. Heh.
Holy shit, that was a nice goal.
yeah, somehow i’d put the fiasco against the rangers out of my mind…i guess whoever said that ‘april is the cruelest month’ must have had the devils and their fans in mind…
YES!!!!!!!! Denver took Tebow, and now I don’t have to worry about him. (But seriously, Broncos, the eff?)

I know it’s a little early thinking, but the thought can’t get outta my head now that it’s over: like the question is with the Sharks every year after they lose in the first round, is it time to blow this team up from its core?
the Pens really need to end this game so VS can switch to the Chicago game. I gotta see Patrick Sharp!
Lappy was interviewed by Coatsy after the game!!! Took that puck in the eyebrow and just shrugged it off. I am convinced that he is the Highlander. I’m waiting to see if Mike Green tries to decapitate him with his skate in the next series, for there can be only ONE!
is it time to blow this team up from its core?
After four years of crashing and burning, then just tinkering with the team, I would love to see Lou do something drastic. Blow it up! Have a fire sale! Everything must go!
I’m glad to hear Lappy’s okay, Nooie!
a few of the devils’ core players they shouldn’t even consider trading, other high salaried veterans no one else would want…i wonder what langenbrunner would fetch on the trade market?
Captainbrunner was one of the first people on my mind in the category of “if somebody made a good offer…”
i figured zach, trav, marty, maybe david clarkson and patrik elias have to stay, and everybody else is hit or miss?
I agree with the untouchables there, but really, would anyone actually WANT Langer? How many of our players are legitimately tradable? I know I don’t want many of them… :P
(Peters? Does anyone want to trade for Peters? How about Niedermayer (The Lesser)? Is he even still under contract?)
I would be sad if Elias couldn’t spend his whole career as a Devil, but other than that, I’m at the point where I value winning — in the playoffs, Devils — considerably more than I like any individual players so I say, “Trade ‘em all!”
if we hide all game tape of the last 2 weeks of the season and the playoffs, langs is probably marketable.
i’m honestly not sure what the situation is with UFAs and RFAs now that the season is over, but I have a good idea of who we shouldn’t be signing…
Adam
Captainbrunner was one of the first people on my mind in the category of “if somebody made a good offer…”
that’s why i mentioned his name…people like white and salvador would be harder to move…people like rolston would be impossible…
Good for Lap. Didn’t he just lose about all his teeth a couple months ago? (Actually, I think our very own Pommerdoodle did that one.) Poor guy.
the Pens really need to end this game so VS can switch to the Chicago game. I gotta see Patrick Sharp!
He has two goals (so far). The second one was very foxy.
if we hide all game tape of the last 2 weeks of the season and the playoffs, langs is probably marketable.
Hey! This series wasn’t on Blersus, so maybe no one noticed how bad he was? Now I’m optimistic that we can get something good for him!
people like rolston would be impossible…
Seriously. Rolston is now my #1 reminder of why I should never be excited about free agent signings. ::Shudder:: Stupid millstone around our necks…
WAIT! I forgot about Dainus Zubrus! We must keep Zubby around! He’s the only one who even marginally showed up in the playoffs that isn’t Marty.
Good for Lap. Didn’t he just lose about all his teeth a couple months ago?
Yea lappy lost most of his teeth back in January I think, also got over 100 stitches. He is the toughest man alive.
On to the Devs. I think there is going to be a major shake up in the off season. the only guy’s I’d say would be safe are Marty, Zajac and Elias depending on what their contracts look like. Kovalchoke is almost assured to go to the KHL. Word is that teams are offering him long term deals that will end up paying him over 120mil before incentive bonuses. Lamaire is probably out as well. I think they are going to look at shoring up their D core before anything else. Look for tough D-men like Hamhuis to come to the Garden State next season.
An hour ago I was ready to can Lemaire but after watching Lemaire’s press conference, I am wondering who the players were who felt they knew better than the coach who has won 9 Stanley Cups. The one comment that stood out was the snippet about the point man on the PP who wouldn’t do what the game plan was. It had to be Rolston.
I say trade Rolston, sign Kovy & Niedermayer (the lesser). Maybe Niedermayer (the greater) will be shamed into signing to play with his brother again?
They really need a player who can log 30 min a game in the playoffs like Stevens used to. Pains me to say so but Pronger did a great job and was the main reason the offense was so anemic. The Devils can’t get by with Salvador as their main shut down defender.
Hmmm. Is anyone planning on winning the Pens-Sens game?
Adam, I agree that Zubrus really stood out. He can stay. The rest? TRADE ‘EM ALL!
I say trade Rolston
I love the way you make that sound so easy. Heh.
Yay! At least the Blackhawks aren’t determined to make me hate them. I was afraid that my favorite team in the next round would be the Flyers. Yeesh.
WAIT! I forgot about Dainus Zubrus! We must keep Zubby around! He’s the only one who even marginally showed up in the playoffs that isn’t Marty.
I was very pleasantly surprised by Zubrus, actually. You’re totally right. I’ve liked him since day one with the Devils, and I continue to stand by him. Zubrus gets to stay.
I say trade Rolston
I love the way you make that sound so easy. Heh.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s as easy as finding a 30-minute-a-night, physical shut-down D-man in his prime! We should all be GMs! :P
Seriously, though, there isn’t much available on the free agent market, is there?
The Devils were at their absolute best this season (and were the best team in the NHL at that time, too) when they were decimated by injuries, and all the hungry kids were called up and fighting for minutes. How can we replicate that for a full season next year? Because as soon as the Devils got healthy, they all got complacent.
Patrick Sharp got 2 goals, Toews had 2 points, and Brent Seabrook hit… well, everyone. So naturally, Sopel gets the postgame interview (my eyes!!!!)
Sorry the Devils got eliminated on Elimination Day! :( Since when did they become so dependable?
And I am shocked, SHOCKED, to say how much I am enjoying the Pens/Sens game. It is everything playoff hockey is supposed to be. *glares* Sabres…
How can we replicate that for a full season next year?
Fight club!

Trip overtime? Holy shit.

Oh, Staffy. If he hasn’t committed hari kari by now, I might do it for him.

Trip overtime? Holy shit.
my DVR is double-booked until 10pm….if the game makes it to quadruple OT then maybe I’ll be able to watch all my Thursday night shows and the game will still be on.
I love how during the game Rob Ray and Rick J kept saying too many men penalties are always the players fault. You should know who you’re replacing. Then afterwards Lindy is all “It was all my fault. You can never blame a player for that, it’s always the coaches fault.”
(also “Rob Ray and Rick J” sound like an awesome 90′s rap group name)
Same skin tone at least

You know how figure skaters wear stockings over their skates? Same concept, just more stockings.
I actually just cheered for the Senators. I blame the Sabres for that too. And I know it’s mean, but it’s kind of funny watching all those dejected Penguins fans. That one chick looks like she’s about to cry and the other dude looks like he’s gonna cut a bitch. Get over it, jerks. Oooohhh, now your team’s only got a 3-2 lead. Cry me a flippin river. Clowns.

haha, poor girl.

I love laughing at other teams’ fanbases during the playoffs. I figure if my stupid team is going to be so willfully shitty, the least I can ask of the playoffs is getting to revel in the pain of others.
And this Sharks/Avs game is dumb. (Sorry, andrew.) Heh.

Alright, good night ladieeeeees! Only five months til October!!
G’night, mcguggs! October can take its time — I think I need some time away from the Devils. Heh.
Hello! Sorry Ookies, although I suspect last night was a relief more than a real disappointment.
Today is our own elimination day! The Habs are not coming back in this series, so I think it would be better to end our misery right now. I’m not really hateful towards them, because no one seriously expected them to win this series, but game 1 and 2 gave my silly hopes, so I can’t help but feeling a little disappointed.
I HATE the Eastern conference matchups so far. All the teams I was rooting for are on the verge of golfing (or already cleaning out their lockers…). From now on, it’s GO WEST all the way!
If you know the Devils suck clap your hands
If you know the Devils suck clap your hands
If you know the Devils suck
even with Kovylchuk

*heavy sigh*
Remember when the Devils were still in the playoffs? And we all walked around miserably knowing that Elimination Day was imminent? Just think how relieved we can be now that it’s over and we don’t have to watch the train wreck anymore! I woke up this morning singing Oh What A Beautiful Morning!
I agree that Zubrus really stood out. He can stay. The rest? TRADE ‘EM ALL!
Parise for Roy and a box of Timbits? Sold!
And Happy Elimination Day for me and Grrrreg. Sigh.

HAHAHAHA! Yeah, it’s a real weight off, knowing we don’t have to watch the Devils sucking anymore. Sure, it’d be nice to see them playing well for a lot longer, but if they’re not going to bother with that, I’ll take a quick stop to it all.
And happy Elimination Day, Sabres and Habs fans! I have high hopes that yours will go better (or is it worse? What’s the objective of Elimination Day?) than ours did!
Parise for Roy and a box of Timbits? Sold!
You should seriously consider this offer, Ookies. Timbits are awesome.
And obviously, Zach would do better in a lower-pressure kind of hockey town like Buffalo. Wait….

Yeah, it’s a real weight off, knowing we don’t have to watch the Devils sucking anymore. Sure, it’d be nice to see them playing well for a lot longer, but if they’re not going to bother with that, I’ll take a quick stop to it all.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. After game 4 I said if they are going to just not bother to try and they obviously suck, it’s better that they just get it over with. And they did. At least they didn’t drag it out until 7 and repeat last year’s disaster against the ‘Canes.
And I agree fire them ALL (almost). I think Jaime has to go. Apparently he’ll show up for the Olympics but not for the playoffs. Rolston has to go but I bet he has a no trade – Lou needs to make him want to go. I wouldn’t re-sign Kovalchuk but I don’t think that will be an issue, he said nice things about wanting to stay in Atlanta as well. He’s not re-signing.
The team may not make the playoffs next year and it might be the best thing to happen.
The team may not make the playoffs next year and it might be the best thing to happen.
I agree. I mentioned it last night, but it bears repeating — when this year’s team was at its absolute best, it was because there were tons of injuries and there were kids getting called up left and right. The situation seemed to create the kind of intensity, pride, and hunger that the healthy team of “accomplished” veterans never shows. It seems to me that it’s time to start redefining the culture of the Devils.

Absolutely…and if Marty doesn’t want to put up with it, he needs to let Lou know. Because then it’s time for him to go as well. I truly appreciate everything he’s meant to this team, but if he doesn’t want to sit through a rebuild at his age, then he shouldn’t stay.
I think that Langer help oodles of team meetings back in March saying: “Guys…we’re the motherfucking Devils. We ALWAYS make the playoffs. We don’t have to try. It just gets handed to us.”
And Zach was like, “Dude…I don’t know. I kind of like trying.”
And Langer started booing Zach, and since he fears being booed so much, he decided to go along with Langer to stop the booing. And then it spread like an epidemic through the whoooole team. Like lice in a 4th grade class.
Honestly, shave their heads and stick them in a flea bath. And send the lice-epidemic to the principals office to be home-schooled from now on.
and if Marty doesn’t want to put up with it, he needs to let Lou know.
Yeeeeeeeeeah. It really hurts to think of Marty going to another franchise, and that’s where I think I might consider wavering a bit on my hardline attitude here… but ultimately it comes down to whether I’m a fan of the player or of the team. I want whatever will make the Devils better. And if it includes some down time that Marty doesn’t want a part of, then… tough. (You put it a lot more eloquently, Sue! :D)
Like lice in a 4th grade class.
Honestly, shave their heads and stick them in a flea bath.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I bet that’s EXACTLY how it went down. Just when I thought it was guys like Gomez and Madden spreading the lice, it turns out it was a multi-sourced problem, far more pervasive than I originally feared.

I’m only guessing that he wouldn’t want to sit through a rebuild for what might be the last 2 years of his career. If Lou has any sense NJ will be very, very bad next year. Sort of like Philly was that one year. They re-load and it only takes a few years to come back – but really, it would have been smarter to do this the year Marty was injured and have grabbed Hedman at #2. Just another reason to hate both Sutter and Clemmensen.
but really, it would have been smarter to do this the year Marty was injured and have grabbed Hedman at #2. Just another reason to hate both Sutter and Clemmensen.
I KNOW! We had the PERFECT excuse to tank, get into the lottery in a good draft, and get a jump on our rebuild, but NOOOOOOOOOO. Stupid fucking CLEMMENSEN. Gah.
Sadly, I’m not sure that the draft pick that came from being terrible for one year was what helped the Flyers’ re-build. I mean, they got van Riemsdyk out of that season, and while he’s good, he’s hardly tearing up the league. What we need is to follow their model of drafting two future All-Stars in the late first round of the deepest draft in NHL history, then trade a bunch of fading veterans to desperate first-time playoff clubs willing to overpay for rental players in exchange for the remaining pieces of a complete reboot. So. Do we think this can happen to the Devils in the next two years? :D
I feel like one good thing that could come out of a truly terrible season would be the possibility that it shakes the complacency out of the organization. I mean, sure, a lottery pick is a good thing, too, but a godawful season might do a lot to undermine the lice-spreaders’ message that the playoffs are a right, not a privilege. :P
I would do the following:
OUT:
1. Rolston (maybe you could work something out for Havlat who has underachieved with Minnesota, the last place Rolston had any success).
2. Langenbrunner – Obviously a bad captain and he takes lots of dumb penalties. I am guessing he is not good in the locker room.
3. Brodeur – This is provisional, I would let him stay if he agress to take a reduced role and split time with Frazee, who I would call up. I will also say he was not the goat this year as I have said he was the last couple of years, but the Devils really need to start looking towards the future.
IN:
1. Bigger players with heart – I know Buffalo is down right now but I am thinking of someone like Mike Grier on offense and a hard hitter on defense, our defense is way too soft.
2. Kovalchuk – I know many may disagree with me but it looked to me like at least he was trying, Lou lost a lot to get him and if he could sign him somehow before free agency, that would be great. I will be the first to admit this has about a 0% chance of happening though, I see Kovalchuk going to the Kings or KHL instead.
So who is everyone voting for now?
Just when I thought it was guys like Gomez and Madden spreading the lice, it turns out it was a multi-sourced problem
Wait, Gomez has lice?! But he has no hair! How can that be? Wait no, I don’t want to know!
Mike, I agree that this was shockingly not Marty’s fault (or at least, not nearly as much as the last two seasons were). I mean, sure, he let in goals at the worst possible times, but it’s not like it was going to make any difference how he played, considering how crappy the team in front of him was. Marty could have been playing out of his mind (and actually was in game 3) and the Devils still would have lost. All of that said, yeah, this team REALLY needs to start transitioning to the post-Marty years. Or at least start thinking about transitioning to a time of considering it.
I would love to ditch Rolston, but I don’t see it happening. That’s an unmoveable contract right there; is he going to be our Nylander? Because I’m not sure I mind the notion of paying him not to play.
And the more I think about it, the more I love the thought of a Langer-free Devils. Can you just imagine no longer being beholden to the notion of the ZZ Pops line? We could have the Showdown at the Triple Z ALL SEASON LONG! (I’m very high on Zubrus right now. It’s all I’ve got. :P)
Wait no, I don’t want to know!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeah, it’s better not to think too hard about it. :P
How can that be?
Tiny livestock in the skivvies, perhaps?
I am thinking of someone like Mike Grier on offense
Grier has made comments before that he wants to be on an organization that he feels has a commitment to winning. If the Devils are in rebuilding mode, would he want to be the old grizzled veteran with a bunch of young whippersnappers…and Andrew Peters?
…and Andrew Peters?
::Shudder:: Don’t remind me! :P
And I’m not a huge Mike Grier fan. He doesn’t really seem like the kind of guy who’s big into being the sage mentor for a bunch of up-and-coming NHLers. What the Devils need is more sage mentors! And more up-and-comers, come to think of it…
What the Devils need is more sage mentors
I’m actually 100% serious. Travis for captain. He always seems pretty upbeat and positive and he seems to TRY when a lot of the rest of the team is bogged down by el Capitan Fuck This Shit. Either that or if poisoned/licey Jamie leaves and Zach gets a spring in his step again, he can go ahead and be captain. I mean, sure, he whines about it, but at least he cares that we boo their power play. He cares! What a revelation!
Also. It might be worth it to hire someone to ahem get rid of Rolston.
Oh, and also, I don’t think it’s possible to have a sage mentor who’s a Devil. All the vets seem to have some sense of entitlement about them where they just stop caring. With the exception of Patty from time to time. They need pep in their step!
but at least he cares that we boo their power play. He cares! What a revelation!
Hm. That’s true. He seems to fluctuate between having that dreaded “I think we’re playing really well, but we’re just not getting the bounces” attitude and the “I’m going to cry because we’re such terrible losers” attitude. Since I liked Patty as captain, and he’s good at the latter, I can only assume that with the right tutelage, Zach could be more of the Captain Hugs mold. :D
“I’m going to cry because we’re such terrible losers” attitude
Oh Zach. I’m torn between laughing at him and giving him “come, let me comfort you” signals.
I don’t know why Kukla’s Korner picks up so many Red Wings (and Rangers) blogs, but I do know that my Reader feed is about to be clogged with Detroit bloggers furious that Lidstrom was left off the Norris list. Actually, furious isn’t nearly a strong enough word for them based on the initial samplings.
(Is this where the Ookies reiterate that they are Zetterburg fans, not Red Wings fans? :p)
Is this where the Ookies reiterate that they are Zetterburg fans, not Red Wings fans?
You know us too well! (And yes. Yes it is. We are ONLY Zetterberg fans. :D)
The A2Y connection on Kukla’s Korner was the reason I stopped reading it ages ago, but then when I realized that Puck Daddy’s daily headlines post (the only reason I was still reading Puck Daddy) was generally nothing more than a compilation of all the headlines on KK, I ended up quitting PD and going back to KK. And now I’m like, “Oh, right. The Wings crazies.” How do those people function on a day-to-day level? I mean, isn’t there a point where all that rage, paranoia, and misplaced sense of entitlement just hinders your ability to function as a human being? :P
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Sabres Score!!!!!!!!!!!
This has absolutely nothing to do with the Devils or last night’s games, or anything really, but isn’t that what everyone needs once in a while?
I was thinking…about cornish hens. Do you ever wonder if while the other guys are eating chicken and pasta before games…Gio eats cornish hen? Same concept, but really tiny, so he feels bigger? I feel like that’d be just the motivation he needs, because he really doesn’t play like he’s a little baby.
With the Gio likes to go after the really big players, I think he would have a whole turkey instead.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to both of you!!!
And I just got up from my nap — what’s going on in the games?
Well, it almost looks like the Devils snuck down to Washington and put on the Capital’s uniforms.
Well, it almost looks like the Devils snuck down to Washington and put on the Capital’s uniforms.
Oooh! It’s music to my ears!
For real, the Habs are definitely going to start taking penalties on purpose just to get a chance to go on the PK. They’ve gotten some of their best offensive chances…short handed. Can I get a wtf?
And B-lo is winning 2-0. Apparently, not all of my favorite teams are ready to just curl up and die.
Apparently, not all of my favorite teams are ready to just curl up and die.
I… don’t understand. Teams can choose not to curl up and die? That makes no sense!
But it’s great to hear things are going well today! WOO HOOOO!!! Keep it up, good guys!
And look at you, Myra, being all “B-lo”. You’re such a cool kid!
Are y’all watching any games tonight, Schnookie?
I’m switching back and forth, but it’s mostly in the background.
Yeah. I’m such the cool kid.
Actually just lazy. :P
We are watching the Sabres and spot checking the Habs.
I think we might go with Walker (In Dallas) until the Wings game (no offense, Sabres fans. It looks like B-lo’s doing well without us, and I wouldn’t want our bad mojo to rub off on them). We’ve got the game on right now, but yeah, it’s very background. :D
I am keeping close tabs on all the scores now that I’m up and fully awake, though.
Oh! If there is a chase between two 18-wheelers on Walker, you can wave @ our first apartment in the background!
If there is a chase between two 18-wheelers on Walker, you can wave @ our first apartment in the background!
Seriously??? We watched an episode a few days ago that had 18-wheelers in it, but I don’t think they were chasing each other. Whew. It means we haven’t missed your first apartment yet!
Oh! If there is a chase between two 18-wheelers on Walker, you can wave @ our first apartment in the background!
Sweet! You better believe that every time we see an 18-wheeler now I’m going to say, “Hi Dave, Hi Myra!”
What were they doing? They were building a new highway by our complex and Walker used it to film on. On afternoon they had two 18 wheelers side by side doing something, it may not have been a chase. It’s been a few, make that a lot of years.
And Sabres score again!
Ok, I’m moving over to the new post.
Did they have trailers on or were they just the cabs? Because we saw them drag racing 18-wheeler cabs this week.
There was a scene with 18-wheelers doing, like, drag racing. It was extremely bizarre. They said it was a big-rig rodeo or something. Maybe that WAS you guys! We’ll have to watch it again, to see if we see you. Maybe we should do a game diary of that episode, since you’re the STARS of it!
I think I’ve told this story before but one of my old co-worker’s neighborhood got blown-up in a really big Walker episode. The airport had imminent domained it and then let Walker blow it up before they bulldozed it.
That is so awesome! I had no idea Walker was so amazing. This show is the perfect way to unwind after the Devils season. That’s what Langer needs — a solid round-house kick to the head.

Langer’s really fallen, hasn’t he? Remember when I offered to take him but y’all wouldn’t let him go? Well, that offer’s no longer on the table. :P
one of my old co-worker’s neighborhood got blown-up in a really big Walker episode.
That’s pretty cool! I guess I should have watched an episode or two back in the day. It is cool that they really shot it all here and not just a few exteriors and the rest in L.A. like most shows do.
Well, that offer’s no longer on the table. :P
D’oh!
Remember when I offered to take him but y’all wouldn’t let him go? Well, that offer’s no longer on the table.
Dammit! I was hoping you hadn’t noticed the drop-off. Heh.
And I, for one, CAN’T WAIT to see the episode where a whole neighborhood gets blown up! Based on what we’ve seen so far, all it’ll take to set that off is one car getting rear-ended. The cars (in Dallas) are, apparently, extremely unstable and volatile. :P
We were living and working in Irving when they were filming and they filmed a lot there. One of young guys I worked with had a bit part as a cop but you never could really see his face. Maybe Dave and I should have stroll down nostalgia lane and catch a few episodes.
Well, that offer’s no longer on the table. :P
For sure. We don’t need that locker room cancer. :P
Sloppy seconds, indeed.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Well, if you won’t take Langer, how about Rolston? :P
And don’t you worry about catching some episodes of Walker — we’ll make sure everyone around here gets their dose of Walker this summer! Heh.
My dad loved to watch Walker but he always complained about the cars blowing up so easily and those round house kicks to the head. Just wasn’t realistic. And those were the only things not realistic? Really, Dad?
And those were the only things not realistic? Really, Dad?
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Everything else in this show is EXTREMELY realistic. The verisimilitude is almost overwhelming. It’s like The Wire, but truer.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
My other favorite thing about this show is the way that people get shot in the torso all the time, fall over dead, then end up in the next scene just with minor flesh wounds.
And no sooner than we discussed the exploding cars here, than there was a scene where a bad guy is trying to escape a shootout on a small motorbike, drives slowly into the back of a parked car, flips over the car, and then the motorbike erupts into an ENORMOUS fireball.
Of course. Motorbike have HUGE gas tanks, don’t ya know.
Motorbike have HUGE gas tanks, don’t ya know.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Apparently! They’re death traps! (The gas tanks are, of course, hooked up to the front tire in such a way that the slightest jostling of the wheel causes CATASTROPHE.)
We’re constantly hearing loud explosions around town but then never hear what happened. Probably daily chases ending in fireballs. :D
Probably daily chases ending in fireballs. :D
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yup! Ho hum. More of the same! (Or it’s fender-benders. Those can lead to fireballs, too.)
That explains everything. And I thought those rumbling sounds were just airplanes. Silly me.
Craig Rivet is cracking me up.
I’m afraid.
And I thought those rumbling sounds were just airplanes. Silly me.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s a common mistake. (Hey! They have a Hummer chasing a bunch of hoodlums on motorcycles [surely on the brink of exploding], with fields of bluebonnets in the foreground! It’s so (In Dallas)-eriffic!)
Bluebonnets are EVERYWHERE right now. We get a little carried away with them, I guess.
But they sure are pretty.
Yay, bluebonnets! I’m a sucker for them.
I don’t think it’s possible to go overboard with the bluebonnets — they’re so gorgeous! I wish we had them here! (They’re also, so far, not explosive.)
But they are probably highly flameable. What out for flashfires!
Little Tyler Ennis scores an empty netter with a great diving poke check. Too cute!
I can’t imagine what would happen if you combined a motorbike with the bluebonnets! CHAOS! Entire neighborhoods could explode!
I think if a car, bumped gently by a vehicle chasing it, were launched into the air to sail a hundred feet and land in a beautiful patch of bluebonnets, it would definitely burst into flames.
That’s why they tell tourists not to sit on them. :P

Congratulations, Sabres fans! I’m glad “Elimination Day” wasn’t contagious.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: They look so innocuous! Looks can be deceiving, and especially so in Dallas!
Best ending to a game, ever!
I’m sure that all the explosions are just from running over all the oil wells here in Dallas. This is Texas you know. Oh, wait, there weren’t any oil or gas wells in Dallas or Fort Worth when Walker was being filmed.
I’m sure that all the explosions are just from running over all the oil wells here in Dallas.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That’s probably it! They were anticipating oil and gas wells. I’m sure. Or there were imaginary ones. Or something.
That’s why they tell tourists not to sit on them. :P
That’s why Texans always have pictures in the Bluebonnets. Just to show everyone how our family cheated death and looked good doing it.

You guys are on fire tonight! Get it? Because you live in Dallas?
Good golly! The end of the Sabres game was FABULOUS!!!

OMG! They’re at the airport! I have been there!
That’s why they tell tourists not to sit on them. :P
Your right, Walker not only kicks all the bad guys, but he discovered the Barnett Shale so we could be warm with cleaner buring fuels and reduce the amount of the worst greenhouse gases. Truely a great American.

Whew! That was a good one, honey!
Who knew all those trails trampled in the bluebonnets are really escape routes. I thought it was was people taking lame pictures of their kids.
Good golly! The end of the Sabres game was FABULOUS!!!
Even Crunchy got in on the fun. It was truly awesome.
(And then Cleveland drafted Colt McCoy, I threw a tantrum, and am now on the verge of tears. Goddamnit.)
Truely a great American.
::tosses round-house-kick-to-the-head-colored confetti in his honor::
Opps, wrong comment. should have been
They were anticipating oil and gas wells.
The heat is getting to me.
Oh and YAY Montreal and stuff.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA to Walker finding the Barnett Shale and the escape routes in the bluebonnets!!!!
And huzzah for all the good hockey results today! Now we just need the Wings to win… :D

I don’t care how foxy Zetterberg’s beard is, you really shouldn’t be encouraging those people :p

Hope Colt has a great career just so he repay Gruden for the accent crack since Colt when to HS near where I grew up.
By the way, yodeling went out in Texas Swing in the 50s or early 60s.
And that’s my rant.

Zetterdink! Zetterdink! Zetterdink!
Sorry about Dave’s rant. He says he has been watching too much ESPN.
And Lidstrom who???
**dodges wadded up tin foil hats**
Keith Yandle has a very nice playoff beard.
Sorry about Dave’s rant. He says he has been watching too much ESPN.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s all cool. I wouldn’t know Colt McCoy if he kicked me in the teeth. :D
**dodges wadded up tin foil hats**
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I’m not a good enough Wings fan, I guess, because I’m not het up enough about Lidstrom to waste this perfectly fine tin foil hat on people slighting him. Now, if someone went and said something bad about Zetterberg’s beard…
Hope Colt has a great career just so he repay Gruden for the accent crack since Colt when to HS near where I grew up.
I hope the Bills trade picks 5-7 for McCoy and he has a great career… in Buffalo. *sob* I’ve been high on this kid since last November (aka when even I declared the Trent Edwards Era dead.)
I hate that I care even remotely about football. It obviously doesn’t care at all about me.
Hmm. I have no idea where my dog is.
I think somebody needs to check on Kathleen. :P
I think somebody needs to check on Kathleen. :P
Yeah. I’m a little worried.
**whispers** You don’t think you did something to her dog do you?
Oh Hey Kathleen! Look at that hobo!

By the way, there is a new thread tonight.
I kept trying to move over there but people kept posting over here and I wanted to comment on them.
Ok. Ok. Fine. I’ll move over.
Have located dog. He was curled up in his crate like a good little puppy.
In addition to the Sabres blowing the lead three times in a row, and in addition to the Bills being terrible at drafting as well as terrible at football, I was dumb enough to decide that a recreational work crush was a healthy step in recovering from mt last relationship. And work crush is dumb enough, at the very least, to seem to think I am a very nice girl (common mistake). So what SHOULD have been a harmless distraction got turned around by this:
Coworker: J is so cute.
Me, offhandedly: Heh. He looks just like a choirboy.
CW: That’s funny you should say that – his dad is a pastor and he’s going to school to be a pastor. What a waste. He’d be such a hot bad boy.
Me (strangling a whimper): Huh. (Very nearly aloud – “Sooo… I guess I won’t be luring him behind the barn ?”)
So what should have been a nice reassurance of “Yay, I’m not totally broken” is now “Barn. Barn. BARN BARN BARN BARN BARN BARN BARN.”
Crap.
