For everyone else who isn’t watching the Winter Classic today, here’s new open thread! Here’s to hoping our shitty teams do better in 2011, and that our good teams have continued success!
Happy New Year!

Hooray! Happy 2011 everyone!
Soooo, what’s everyone been up to today? Other than not watching the Winter Classic.
I got McFlirty to add me on facebook! I feel like that is somehow a total coup, even though it’s really not.
BTW, Karen, congratulations on bringing Nora into the world. She sounds a charm!
I’m watching Die Hard and then enjoying the Sabres game and not the Winter Classic.
Hooray for teams doing better this year! Then again, there’s really not much further a lot of them can fall, right?
Here’s to hoping our shitty teams do better in 2011, and that our good teams have continued success!
Right now I can’t decide which side the Stars are on. What if we wish them continued success but they’re really shitty? They might get confused and continue to be shitty.
I’m glad you got McFlirty back, Mags!
Amy, your afternoon sounds like ours, only we watched a Bond movie instead of Die Hard.
So what are the chances the Devils start 2011 off with a win?
Huh. Guess the Devils answered that question.
Not good, huh?
Huh. Guess the Devils answered that question.
And the Sabres are answering their version of it. Crunchy’s off his game tonight. Like bad off. Not the “getting a night’s rest” off.
Crunchy’s off his game tonight. Like bad off. Not the “getting a night’s rest” off.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Happy New Year to all of us, eh?
This Sabres game is way more exciting than the Winter Classic. Hmm. (And I can’t believe the Sabres are winning now after that start. HAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Oh, and I don’t know if Karen is still around, but congrats!!! Nora is a lovely name. You don’t hear it nearly enough, but at least she won’t be the eighth Megan and thirteenth Katie in her class or whatever kids are getting named these days.
Well. These are not last season’s Sabres and Bruins.
Funnest game in approx forever.
at least she won’t be the eighth Megan and thirteenth Katie in her class or whatever kids are getting named these days.
According to the baby name lists, it would be the 13th Sophia or 8th Isabella in their class. And that was definitely something we took into consideration, which is why Brian didn’t get to name her Sophie (after Howl’s Moving Castle.)
Huh. Guess the Devils answered that question.
Doh, I should have watched them instead of the boring winter classic. In which the dirty Caps of the China Doll Cheeks did a big fat nothing anyway.
Happy 2011! Every time I type that, I try to write 2001. It’s getting old.
What if we wish them continued success but they’re really shitty? They might get confused and continue to be shitty.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I’ve spent the second day of 2011 doing homework. Not how I envisioned my year starting off, but it’s a “start as you mean to go on” thing. Which I’m hoping this Devils loss is not, those rat bastards.
I’m sorry about the homework, Mags. I’m about to spend the day at work. Blergh. Working Sundays sucks so bad. I have to drive 2 hours to work 4, and it’s craaaaaazy busy for those 4 hours. And I don’t get a comp day for it the way I do for Saturdays. All in all, it sucks. But…. it is better than homework. :P
I don’t know, I think I’d hate working on Sunday more than homework. Especially if I didn’t get a comp day for it.
I suppose it depends on the homework. Is the homework to watch hockey and quilt? Or is it some kinda crazy economics?
It was some kinda crazy Organisational Design thing I’m not sure is actually relevant to my career path. As far as I know, accountants don’t spend too much time designing parallel order streams and segmenting them, and assigning decision rights to self-sufficient teams. Oh, for the idea of liberal arts colleges to make their way to this side of the pond. But I digress.
If my homework were to watch hockey and craft, I would have NO trouble getting any of it done. I’d finish early and do extra every time.
If my homework were to watch hockey and craft, I would have NO trouble getting any of it done. I’d finish early and do extra every time.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I wouldn’t. I’d be a failure. I sat like a lump all day today. I had all kinds of plans of all kinds of things I wanted to do today, and I didn’t do any of them. I suck. :P
And that Organisational Design (you know it’s fancy because of the “S” in “Organisational”) thing sounds like it sucks, too. Yeesh.
Man, the Beards of Bees cannot get out of 12th/14th place! I don’t get it. Well, at least we’re ahead of the Stinky Cheese and Hanky Panky. And Sidney Crosby plays for Hanky Panky and they’re in dead last. This is crazy upside down hockey!
Omg. The Juniors are making me feel SO OLD.
Don’t they just? And unaccomplished. Geez.
Oh, World Junior Championships. Heh. Talk about things I just can’t be bothered paying attention to. :P
And hey, guess what! I’m back in my old office! And every single thing I have in here that wasn’t in a drawer or in a cabinet (read: a hell of a lot of stuff) is now in a different place! They switched up all the desk chairs on my floor! My office sweater is gone, and someone else’s is in its place! At least 70% of my magnet collection on my overhead cabinets is gone! As are my little ceramic teapot my boss got me in China, and the little wooden elephant my other boss got me in India. And my box of tissues. And there’s no running water in the break room, so I can’t make tea. Dude, and to think — I was happy about coming into work this morning.
And every single thing I have in here that wasn’t in a drawer or in a cabinet (read: a hell of a lot of stuff) is now in a different place!
O.My.God! I’m so sorry, that’s awful! And NO TEA. That’s just… I’d go home. That’s unworkable.
My sister got me a Rihanna CD for Christmas for a joke, and I’m slightly ashamed to admit I can’t stop listening to it. I have no taste. None at all.
Don’t they just? And unaccomplished. Geez.
Moreso on the old. I mean, Marcus Foligno is nice to look at, but I feel creepy. There’s a nine-year age difference here. I mean, I worked the college orientation several years ago when his older sister came through! Makes me feel old.
Schnookie, that’s horrible about your stuff. I’m sure you and your floormates are going to be having a scavenger hunt of sorts to figure out whose stuff is where.
That’s just… I’d go home. That’s unworkable.
I’m thinking the same thing. Heh.
And I bet I would LOVE a Rihanna CD! I recently realized that, at 34, I’m never going to be cool again (not that I ever was, but you know what I mean), so I don’t have to bother trying anymore. So, yeah. That means I have Lady Gaga on my iPod.
There’s a nine-year age difference here. I mean, I worked the college orientation several years ago when his older sister came through!
I was going to say “9 years isn’t too bad!” but wow, wow that’s weird. I wonder if it wouldn’t be weird if there was no sibling in between.
That means I have Lady Gaga on my iPod.
Same here. And Katy Perry. And Enya. Except, y’know, I’m 22. I feel like that girl from that Lily Allen song. When I was 22, the future looked bright. If I actually follow the song, it’s all downhill from here.
I loved Enya when I was 22! And I’d probably still like her now, but I only have trace elements of her on my ipod at the moment. (Please note: I wasn’t cool when I was 22. :P)
Same here. And Katy Perry. And Enya
I’ve got Gaga and NKOTB. It was very weird to be watching Donnie Wahlberg sing and dance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve just when I had gotten used to him playing a cop on Blue Bloods.
I wasn’t cool when I was 22. :P
Whatever, I’m bitchin’ :P I have no friends outside the ones that live in my computer, so many food hangups it makes waiters cry, no taste in music or fashion, but I don’t care because McFlirty said I was hot!
I always forget Donnie Wahlberg exists. Sorry Donnie, it’s all about Marky Mark at Faerie College.
but I don’t care because McFlirty said I was hot!
And he’s right! So there!!
And he’s right! So there!!
Damn straight.
So anyway. How is your treasure hunt going, Schnookie?
I always forget Donnie Wahlberg exists. Sorry Donnie, it’s all about Marky Mark at Faerie College
Mmm. Marky Mark. But Donnie is hot in that scruffy sort of way.
I don’t know how my day is going anymore. I really, really, really need some hot tea. :( (Heh.) (I’m also really cold. I was sorta hoping someone would have reported my sweater was in place of theirs, so I could get it back. Instead, I’m just sitting here shivering, wishing for tea. This day BLOWS!)
And to make matters worse, I think the Devils are on Versus tonight. I suppose Versus is even less thrilled about that than I am. :P
Sorry about the homework, Mags. When I did my MBA, they made me take two accounting courses even though I had no intention of going anywhere near accounting in my career. So, even if you do decide to do a professional program over here, they still make you take requirements that have nothing to do with your intended career. But I understand your pain, I can still remember sleeping through financial accounting.
However, in liberal arts programs, it’s rare to find a major in accounting – in large universities you can do an undergraduate BBA, but you’ll have the same issue I had with my MBA, you have to do all the requirements, including the HR (Organizational Design) componant.
I think the Devils are on Versus tonight.
I could’ve sworn they played yesterday, and not today. But um, if you say so. I haven’t checked the schedule since before Christmas. I just assume losses.
(Tangent: this did not stop me wearing my Parise t-shirt to snowboarding, and being given a really bad time about it by our resident Rangers fan. Hugh Jessiman and Sean Avery jokes did not deter her.)
Ack! I hope they’ve got a special cubby they forgot to tell you about with all your stuff, Schnookie. That especially sucks about the gift from your bosses :(
But maybe the other-sweater owner is wishing the same thing right now. You’ll find each other!
Mags is making me feel old.
Mags is making me feel old.
After a holiday of having my ass kicked at snowboarding by an 11 year old, I feel it’s only fair I get to make someone else feel old now. Sorry though!
(Have I told you I’m never going to stop talking about this holiday? Because I’m not. I’m that enamoured with the whole experience.)
Mags, you need to lure the Rangers fan into pick-up hockey and Scott Stevens her this time around.
Have I told you I’m never going to stop talking about this holiday? Because I’m not. I’m that enamoured with the whole experience
And why not? You had snowboarding and a McFlirty!
Kathleen, I tried but she got “pneumonia”. Pshaw.
Have I told you I’m never going to stop talking about this holiday? Because I’m not. I’m that enamoured with the whole experience.
Dude, it sounds like one of the great vacations of all time! I’d go on about it forever too! :D
And about the Parise t-shirt, yeah, I’m pretty much completely ignoring the team now, but that didn’t stop me from ordering my Devils license plates! And asking the Flyers-fan dudes at the Toyota place to put them on the car for me when I was getting my flat tire fixed. There was much grumbling among them, and a bit of balking by one who insisted he couldn’t put a Devils license plate on a car, but in the end my car ended up with the plates on so I can be mocked everywhere I go. Heh heh. (Our Toyota place advertises on the Flyers games. After all these years of seeing only commercials for out-of-market car dealerships during hockey games on Center Ice and the North Jersey advertisers on Devils games, it’s SO weird to be like, “Wait. That’s MY Toyota place!”)
Kathleen, I tried but she got “pneumonia”. Pshaw.
Pfffftttt, typical Rangers fan.
You had snowboarding and a McFlirty!
Yeah, and guess who I’m skyping right now (it’s not snowboarding) (with Rihanna on the background, which he noted within 35 seconds.)
in the end my car ended up with the plates on so I can be mocked everywhere I go.
That’s what that girl said as well. She insisted that she could not sit too close to me with me in that t-shirt, but at least I was eminently mockable.
She insisted that she could not sit too close to me with me in that t-shirt
What, did she think she was going to catch something? Like “pneumonia”?
Or, maybe since she was a Ranger fan, she thought you’d try and make her team start losing if you got too close. That must be it. Lo and behold, they’ve gone and done it all on their own. Admit it, you snuck up behind her and breathed on her, didn’t you?
Admit it, you snuck up behind her and breathed on her, didn’t you?
And I would’ve got away with it if it wasn’t for that meddling Sue!
Oh. Dear. Schnookie, that is awful about your stuff. I would be having a nervous breakdown by now. I hope you can recover most of it!
Oh and all this about feeling old? Talk to me in about 20 years. You are all a bunch of youngsters!
Hmm. I think I’d like the Sabres more right now if they had a Joey the Junior Reporter. Someone needs to get on that stat, please.
Oh and all this about feeling old? Talk to me in about 20 years. You are all a bunch of youngsters!
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s true. There are a lot of whippersnappers around here. :D
And thanks for the sympathy, Myra. Sadly, I think most of my things are gone forever. But you better believe I’m expensing the cost of my new sweater.
this did not stop me wearing my Parise t-shirt to snowboarding
Speaking of Zach, he does an outstanding job in the ads promoting Hockey Day Across America. He’s all smooth and polished, like he actually practiced his script. Then again, my baseline is Crunchy & Pat Kane, who combine to shove thirty kinds of awkward into one thirty second ad.
It’s because it’s all Zach’s had to do the last few months. ::sniffle:: (Not that I think he’s the missing piece to get this trainwreck back on track.)
Happy New Years everyone! Hope everyone’s holidays were wonderful!
I have been hockey free since before Christmas and the only reason I know the Sabres are playing tonight is because I set my Fantasy roster and my three Avs are playing them. But I got a Kindle for Christmas, so the only part of the game I’m actually interested in is the Duchene/Stastny Bang Bang dance at the end when they kill the Sabres. I’m also just recovering from the end of one of the four novels I’ve read so far on my Awesome Kindle. (Awesome is capitalized because when I registered it, I named it “Awesome Kindle”.) I highly recommend the Karin Slaughter novels, even if she did just make me bawl like a little baby for the past 20 minutes. Unlike the Sabres, she’s only made me cry once.
One f*cking shot on goal by NJ…and they give up a goal to Clutterbuck. For all the support the offense is giving Hedberg, they must believe he’s Marty.
OK, so Kovalchuk scored. It’s the apocalypse.
OK, so Kovalchuk scored. It’s the apocalypse.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
mcguffers, I’m glad you’re loving your Kindle!
Good grief. The Devils are stupid.
Good grief. The Devils are stupid.
I’ve become convinced that all the Devils are somehow linked with Clarkson’s brain and that his dim mind is now running everything.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Sue, that’s GOT to be it. There’s no other explanation that makes any sense.
