So, Brian Rafalski retired today. Hmph. We were really hoping he’d outlast Lidstrom, so the Wings would be stuck paying him $6 million a year for being solo Rafalski instead of complimentary-offensive-defenseman-to-a-first-ballot-hall-of-famer Rafalski, because we’re mean that way. Anyway, over lunch today Pookie made a horrible realization about the Devils’ vaunted champion rookie class of 2000: “Rafalski has retired. Madden’s sure to retire soon. Gomez is… Gomez. And we’re still stuck with Colin White. And it doesn’t seem like he’s going anywhere soon.” Yup. It’s hard being a Devils fan, isn’t it?

Yes, it is sad, I’m wondering if, as Rafalski did say he was very grateful to NJ in his retirement speech, he could stop in to see Colin over the summer and convince him that hockey isn’t his (Colin’s) #1 priority anymore. Apparently, that’s what convinced Brian to hang ‘em up, the injuries were bad enough that he couldn’t say he could put hockey at the top of his list anymore.
What kind of surprised me was what was at the top of his list, (at least according to what he said in the press conference). I pay fairly close attention to the press coverage and listen to the player interviews and I just never realized he was that religeous. Then again, NJ never encouraged players to show that sort of thing.
BTW, Madden’s salary for this past season was equal to what Lou’s paying Pando & Peters for their buyouts per year (83% of that is Pando, he better be a really, really great intern).
Anyway, if nobody can convince Colin to go away, he’s here for 2 more years, 3 million cap hit. Gomez is someone’s problem for 3 more years, at over twice that cao hit, although there are rumors Montreal may just give up and send him to the minors.
I was also surprised at how religious Rafalski’s retirement speech was. Who knew??? But anyway, yeah, it would be awesome if he could perhaps spread some of his “not my top priority” mojo to Whitey.

sue: capgeek sez that white has one more year to go at 3.0 million and salvador has one more year to go at 2.9 million but it gives no suggestion as to whether either one can be persuaded to retire, go on LTIR or will retire rather than have their contract assigned to the AHL…i think white has a ‘no trade’ contract but not a ‘no movement’ clause which means he can be sent to the AHL but not the rangers…lol

Oh, it wasn’t that great. I tried making my own version of the fancy bakery cake that’s been my traditional choice the last few years, that involves finely chopped strawberries in the frosting between the layers.
The concept worked out, but the recipes I picked for the cake and frosting weren’t the greatest. ::shrugs:: Things to improve on next year!

I thought I might need Blobby for a while there but we finally got the moving date set today. The movers will start packing on the 16th, load on 17th and arrive at the new house somewhere between the 20th-22nd. Hard to believe we have an actual date.

I’ve learned a lot about DMZ/port forwarding/static IPs/MAC address cloning/etc. since way back in the day when I decided to get the network attachment for the PS2 so I could see if playing Hot Shots golf online was any fun.
Can you guys connect to the internet at all on your xbox or is the problem that you can connect in general but not in games? I’d offer to help more but I am off for Yosemite National Park tomorrow, I bet Frisby could talk you through network setup though. If you need me, I’ll be wrestling bears and climbing mountains.

I’m afraid the zombies will be too intense for me! I’m a big fan of the “riding around and picking flowers” aspect of Grand Theft Horsie. (Although I hated that the game was pissy at us for wasting so much time picking flowers, and kept sending those damn wolves and catamounts to eat us. Heh.)
