Okay, we know we have been committed the last few months to deep, exhaustive hockey analysis (haaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!), but allow us to veer off topic for just a moment. We have made a discovery that has completely blown our minds, and we want to share it with you. Behold, malted milk chocolate sauce!
The recipe for this comes from “Baked: New Frontiers In Baking”*, and seriously, it has changed our lives. With an absolute minimal output of effort, you can have a fancy, delicious dessert that seems way more opulent than the amount of work you put in could ever have produced. It’s so simple and so delicious that it can almost make a person forget how much the playoffs sucked this year.
Malted Milk Chocolate Sauce
2/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup chocolate malt Ovaltine
1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 ounces good-quality milk chocolate coarsely chopped**
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1. In a large saucepan, bring the cream, corn syrup, Ovaltine, brown sugar, salt, and 4 ounces of the chocolate to a boil over medium heat. Stir until smooth and the chocolate has melted. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and, stirring very slowly, cook for 5 minutes.
2. Remove from the heat and stir in the butter, vanilla, and the remaining 2 ounces chocolate. Let the sauce cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
3. To store, cool the sauce completely and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Reheat in a microwave oven or over low heat on the stovetop or over low heat on the stovetop.
See? Super-easy! It tastes so much better than stupid poopy old Canucks/Bruins Stanley Cup Final does.
*We actually like the second “Baked” cookbook, “Baked Exploration”, more. That cookbook hasn’t had a loser in it yet. Just in case you were wondering.
**We don’t tend to have milk chocolate on hand, so we’ve made this a few times now with dark chocolate. And you know what? It’s still delicious.

Ooooooh this looks GOOD. I just finished eating a mushroom risotto that I made. My first EVER risotto, and to my surprise, it was DELICIOUS. I’m so proud right now!! :D

[obligatory Burrows-doesn't-agree-thinks-Bruins-are-v-tasty joke]
But seriously, that looks so delicious. Too bad I don’t have only 3 of the required ingredients in the house :(
Grrrreg, congrats on the delicious risotto! I’m so proud of you!! :D (I wish I could eat mushroom risotto, because it’s one of my favorite things, but I never make it because Pookie dislikes mushrooms to the point of possibly being allergic to them. So I’ll just have to live vicariously through you.)

:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I’d suggest it’s nothing a little malted chocolate sauce couldn’t fix, but some things are even beyond the powers of this sauce.
Hey guys! This looks delicious -even with Ovaltine. I don’t really understand that flavour. Is it chocolate or what? In any event, the malted thing is probably pretty delicious. We used to go for malts when I was a kid with my Grandma at Woodwards. Oh God. How old am I?
Yah! Poopy Bruins!
I’m really hoping tonight is the last night for this season. I’m exhausted from all the excitement. The Canucks just need to win it already.
I’ve never made risotto before. I don’t think I’ve even tasted it before. But it sounds great. All the coolest chefs are making it.
We used to go for malts when I was a kid with my Grandma at Woodwards. Oh God. How old am I?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Don’t say you’re old. Just claim that you got malteds at a very, very retro ice cream place. :P (There was an olde-fashioned ice cream place in Arizona that we used to go to, and that’s where we discovered the joys of malt.) Oh, and Ovaltine seems to come in regular (vanilla?) malt and chocolate-flavored malt.
I hear you about how exhausting it is when your team’s in the SCF. Neither Pookie nor I had jobs in ’03 when the Devils had their last Cup run (and we had tickets). Thank goodness for that, too, because it was a full-time job being consumed by the SCFness of it all.
I picked up all the necessary while I was at the store today (and a pint of vanilla ice cream) and discovered they don’t stock light corn syrup. So I got all fancy and substituted agave nectar instead. Verdict: Still delish.
Whoa, agave nectar! Aren’t you the cool one, Mags! Heh. I’m glad you were able to substitute and try this out, and that you liked it. Honestly, for its simplicity and the magnitude of its deliciousness, I’m not sure how I’ll ever justify having plain ice cream ever again.
We used to go for malts when I was a kid with my Grandma at Woodwards. Oh God. How old am I?
Hey now, I know an amazing ice cream shop in Queens where you can still get malts. (Although I’m not sure the place really counts as retro or olde-fashioned since it’s just really old. As in “it had been around for years when my grandma was growing up next to a dairy farm in Queens” old.) Still though, you could be a toddler right now and be going for malts with grandma.
I handed in the final version of my dissertation/thesis/graduate project/whatever today. I’m now two exams (ok, fine, one exam. The other is English, and it doesn’t count) away from a Bachelor’s degree. How fricking bizarre is that?
you could be a toddler right now and be going for malts with grandma.
I’d like to be a twenty something going for a malt, with or without grandma.
Whoa, Mags, that’s awesome! Congratulations on handing in your dissertation!
That’s so cool, Mags! It sure seems like it hasn’t been long enough since you started college for you to be on the verge of a Bachelor’s! Congratulations!
I agree with Patty — how is it possible that you’re on the cusp of your degree already, Mags? Where has the time gone?? And also, congratulations!!!! You deserve a malt or two for washing your hands of the dissertation! That’s definitely quite an accomplishment.
Hi Ookies.
:-(
Golfing season has finally happened for the Canucks. That last game just sucked. Now we’re watching the riots in our city. Good times for Vancouver right now.
I’m sorry I’m from Vancouver right about now. We’re not all like that, I promise.
Also, good game, Boston. And Tim Thomas is very cool. It’s okay to say that now. :-)
And congrats Mags! You’re nearly there! YAY! Now you can get a regular job. And that’s fun. Ha! Maybe work is more fun in the Netherlands? I sure hope so! Why don’t you start a goalie school?
Hey Patty (in Dallas) I’m thinking I just may cheer for your team next year! :-)
I’m really sorry for your loss, Carol. It shouldn’t have ended this way :(
And thank y’all! I’m feeling very accomplished. I’ll be applying to graduate programs shortly, because you need an MA in accounting to become a CPA around here (which is, in the end, what I want to be). So I get to postpone the real world another year!
Right now I’m just very happy there’s no stupid hockey until october. What a DREADFUL season this was. The hockey gods are just a bunch of assholes.
I’m sorry I’m from Vancouver right about now. We’re not all like that, I promise.
Hey, it’s cool. Every city has assholes. Case in point: New York has Rangers fans. Yuck.
I’m sorry your team lost.
And congrats on being almost done, Mags!
Carol, I’m so sorry for the way this all ended for you! That’s just the saddest. :(
Case in point: New York has Rangers fans. Yuck.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: So true.
And Mags, postponing real life for another year sounds like a GRAND plan! Maybe I should do that…
I’m sorry I’m from Vancouver right about now. We’re not all like that, I promise.
We know. I’m so sorry that a bunch of hooligans ruined the reputation of both your city & Canucks fans as a whole. :::hugs:::
The official results are in, Myra’s Hub is our latest Frisby Bowl champion. And congratulations to Schnookie, she wins a “participant” ribbon. I would also like to say, “Well done” to both the Bruins and Mags.
hey Mags congrats! Postpone the “real” world for as long as you can!
A huge “ugh” to the idiots in Vancouver. I’ll never understand sports-related rioting. Never. I was watching the video until about 12:15 am here and was hoping to see all of those drunk douchebags get beat down by the popo.
Carol and Alix, glad you guys are safe!
The hockey gods are just a bunch of assholes.
Truth!
that a bunch of hooligans ruined the reputation of both your city & Canucks fans as a whole.
Also true! They made the news here. I couldn’t believe it. Crazy stuff.
As for real life, the government is being a bunch of assholes and fining people 3 grand for using academics to postpone real life any more than a year. Listen, The Man, if I want to spend all my money on becoming ridiculously overeducated, would you just let me?
Carol (and alix), I’m so, so sorry.
Mags, my advice is to roll in being in grad school. I didn’t appreciate it enough until the very end because I was too worried about not having a job. If I could go back and do that differently, I would enjoy every last free afternoon down to the last drop.
Oh Mags! I spent 7 years in grad school! The Man there would have loved to get all that cash from me!
Real life totally sucks. I loved the grad student life style!
Heavens to Murgatroyd, my professor super-stuck-up-German-man just found my blog. I dread tomorrow’s class.
my advice is to roll in being in grad school.
I loved the grad student life style!
I’ll take your word for it!
As for real life, the government is being a bunch of assholes and fining people 3 grand for using academics to postpone real life any more than a year.
Hold the phone. You want to be a CPA, but need higher, higher ed to do that. The government is fining you for that? I think my brain just broke.
Mags, put off real life as long as possible! I put it off until I was 35 and it still wasn’t long enough.
In hockey news, I knew the Bruins would win since I crossed paths with a bear last week in Yosemite. It walked away from me, an obvious loser in the mental arm wrestling contest we were having but the omens were unmistakable. And since I was driving through Nevada on the way to the park, I was able to put in a bet on the Bruins at 3.4 – 1 odds to win the Cup. Yay me!
I think my brain just broke.
You’re telling me. Politics is crazy yo. I’m sure it makes sense to the policy makers , but not to me. They’re leaning very heavily on the “more education = better paying job = fine won’t be an issue” argument. And the Minister for Education is totally a reliable figure in this discussion, because it only took him 11 years to get a history degree after all. And let’s talk not about the Minister for FINANCE, who has a degree in POLITICS, which it took him 6 years to achieve. So yes, punish the people who want to stay in school for one year more than the three you’ve allotted them in your precious little plan, because otherwise they cost you too much money in subsidies. Meanwhile, you’re spending x millions on a bloody Joint Strike Fighter, which you don’t need, and are still bailing out insurance companies. Austerity measures my ass.
*breathes* Right. Off my soapbox.
holy snap Mags…that’s some crazy stuff. I can only imagine how angry i’d be if I were “fined” for pursuing a higher degree.
Jeebus. I had no idea you guys were all so smart. Grad school? MAs…7 years in grad school? WOW. I have an Outdoor Recreation Certificate – 2 whole years of college. And I never go outside if I can help it.
Thanks guys! You made me feel much better. At least I’m not a Rangers fan. Hooray! Silver lining! And I got all my squares cut for quilting bee tonight. So last night was a little productive!
Game 7 is tonight, right?!? That was just a horrible nightmare I had? NO? WELL SHIT.
The majority of people that started it were professional rioters from out of town. I mean what even? Sigh.
All that wonderful reputation we gained after the Olympics BOOM, gone. Sad ostrich.
But life goes on. Time to make summer plans. Any suggestions IPBers? What are y’all up to for the summer?
I’m sorry, sweetie. Feel better. Life does indeed go on.
What are y’all up to for the summer?
It’s not my summer yet, but when I get there I fully intend to spend it lounging about eating ALL the food I will have time to cook, and reading all the fiction I haven’t had time to touch since last September. Very glamorous, I know.
Go to Yosemite Park, it is absolutely beautiful. I’ll tell the bears to watch out for all Vancoverans since you all will be in an anti-bear mood. Just don’t burn the place down :)
And congratulations to Schnookie, she wins a “participant” ribbon.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! See, kids? You can’t ever go wrong picking the Ducks!
I knew the Bruins would win since I crossed paths with a bear last week in Yosemite. It walked away from me, an obvious loser in the mental arm wrestling contest we were having
Whoa! I’m just catching up now — way to outsmart (and out -muscle) the bear! That’s so exciting! And I wish you’d told us about it when it happened, so we could have gotten in on those odds. Hmph. :P
Mags, that is some crazy fucked-up shit your crazy country’s trying to throw at you. Higher education is important, yo! (Or you could be like me and end up hating grad school and dropping out after a few weeks… :P)
And again, major, major “bummer, dudes” to the Vancouver contingent. I hope that you at least got to enjoy setting some cars on fire last night. :(
7 years in grad school?
It probably should have been 5 or 6, but it took me awhile to get my shit together! At least I got two degrees for my efforts.
Alix, the cops should round up the people who started it and send them to the sun. That would teach them to fuck up a pretty place like Vancouver.
I wish I could suggest something fun for the summer! Do people go “down the shore” in the Pacific Northwest?
Do people go “down the shore” in the Pacific Northwest?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: My recommendation is to sit in the air conditioning until hockey starts up again. Works for me!
I can’t wait for July. I’m taking a 10 days break to travel a bit accross central Europe: Slovakia, Czech Republic and a few days in Vienna. EXCITING!!
I’ll try not to think about hockey too much, but well I’ll have to say hi to Jaro Halak in Bratislava and Plekanec, Spacek and Hamrlik in Prague I guess, it’s the polite thing to do… By the way, if there’s anything you want me to say to Vanek while I’m in Vienna, go ahead. Well, as long as that won’t get me in trouble, that is.
Do people go “down the shore” in the Pacific Northwest?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I work with a lot of people who live on the shore. I was talking to another fellow central-Jerseyite who said of those people, “They need to relax and go down the shore. No, wait, they’re already there. OK, they need to go further down the shore!”
Grrrreg, that sounds awesome! I hear the Czech Republic is gorgeous.
if there’s anything you want me to say to Vanek while I’m in Vienna, go ahead.
How long until he has two more kids and sets up his own power play unit? Just kidding, of course.
And I know it sucks that Drury’s career is most likely over, but it’s still funny just how screwed the Rangers are when it comes to the cap & his contract, right?
It’s HILARIOUS about Drury. Heh heh heh. It’s always funny, no matter what, when the Rangers get dicked over.
(Oh, and I realize people have been complaining about this for days but I have to add my two cents — this new WordPress comment system sucks! I’ve always loved that WordPress comments are so much nicer than Blogger, but what gives, WordPress?! Why do I have to hit “Post Comment” twice to post a fucking comment?!?)
The Czech Republic is indeed gorgeous, we went there 3 years ago and it was great! The favorable exchange rate is the icing on the cake, it’s nice to get a pint of high quality beer in a bar for $1.70. And I give a Nelson HA-HA to the Rangers!
Congrats to…
Mags for finishing her degree and staving off the real world for one more year.
Mike in Idaho for surviving meeting a real bear.
Hub for winning Frisby Bowl. Although he swears that he came in second.
Sympathy to….
Carol & Alix on losing the Cup and on having stupid looters ruin your pretty city.
The movers are loading up all our possessions today, to be delivered on Tuesday. It’s a rather surreal experience.

Ohh! I hope everything works out well for you guys. I know how weird it is to leave a house you’ve lived in for some time. I hope Kansas City will be awesome.
Oops, I forgot to put Myra’s quote in italics. Oh well.
Wow, Myra, I can’t believe it’s moving day already! Congrats on getting everything packed up — that’s totally the worst part, right?
Thanks for the summer suggestions y’all! I knew I could count on you.
We don’t “go to the shore” but I could go to the nude beach in town :D
Good luck with your move in Myra!
And I thought the Canucks had bad karma. LOL Rangers
Why do I have to hit “Post Comment” twice to post a fucking comment?!?
I KNOW RIGHT. For some reason that is making me really rage-y.
The movers are loading up all our possessions today, to be delivered on Tuesday. It’s a rather surreal experience.
That’s so exciting! I’ve got my fingers crossed everything arrives in one piece.
LOL Rangers
Yes. There is actual LOL-ing whenever I read about it.
Hub for winning Frisby Bowl. Although he swears that he came in second.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!?! It appears he did come in second.
Well then, congratulations, Meg!
