Being really smart people, we do occasionally read actual books rather than just hockey blogs; one book one of us recently started the laborious process of plowing through is “Battle Cry of Freedom”. It seemed a reasonably non-hockey-themed undertaking to help fill the summer hours, so imagine our surprise when we discovered in its pages one of the most obvious IPB shout-outs ever. Smack-dab in the middle of a description of the Union army’s tactical advantages on the Mississippi was the story of the ironclad river boats known as…
…wait for it…
…Pook’s turtles.
We are not making this up.
This being a clear reference to us from beyond the grave, we felt we needed to enlist Boxworthy to do a little Civil War reenactment.
We’ve done exhaustive reading since our first discovery of the term “Pook’s Turtle” (by “exhaustive reading” we mean “googled it and read the wikipedia entry”), and we can say with some confidence that Boxworthy’s costume is utterly historically accurate. That is exactly what Pook’s Turtles looked like.
One of the benefits of having a highly detailed and historically accurate CivilWar ironclad river ship costume is that, when the sesquicentennial celebrations are over and all the armchair Civil War buffs lose interest in playing at dress-up with him, Boxworthy will be perfectly accoutered to join the ranks of Red Wings bloggers.

Omigod. Most amazing (and unlikely) shoutout EVER.

*speechless*
Kudos to Boxworthy, he looks very battle-shippy in his reenactment costume.

it is so authentic in appearance that it is not a reenactment costume, it is a period piece :D
Kathleen, I’ll pass your compliments along to Boxworthy. He’ll be glad to hear how ship-shape he’s looking.

So what’s the opinions on the Devils’ new coach that they got from Florida? It seems since Florida is always doomed to failure from the start, we really don’t know if the guy is any good at coaching or not. Although if he starts giving inspiring pre-game speeches with references to the gallant bravery of Pook’s Turtles and the brave soldiers on them, the Devils should cruise to victory.
I just wonder if they owe the Panthers anything since he had a year left on his ‘contract’ (even though he had been fired). I hope that something isn’t NJ having to take Clemmer off Florida’s hands. If they demand compensation, can we give them Winky?
As for thoughts on the coach…there was a whole list of people I was hoping Lou wouldn’t hire. DeBoer wasn’t on it. I guess that’s a good sign.

Me too, I am especially glad it wasn’t Hitchcock. And does Florida have another goalie besides Clemmer now since they lost Vokoun? An entire year of Clemmer blaming everyone for his soft goals should be entertaining.
Jose Theodore and his hair have moved to South Florida.

I was thinking they must have some kind of plan, they’re stupid but they can’t be that stupid.
they’re stupid but they can’t be that stupid.
They let Vokoun walk and handed out large contracts to anyone who would say yes so that they could get above the floor. I call David Clarkson the stupidest man in hockey, but I never considered the management end before. He would fit right in with Florida’s management.
A few more thoughts on the new coach: the press conferences are going to deadly dull compared to the ones Jacques gave. He should have Jacques give the pressers by Skype or something. Also, apparently DeBoer coached Clarkson and ‘saved his career’ in junior and I’m not sure that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Clarkson’s still an idiot and he can’t stay upright. Then again, if Clarkson can make it to the NHL…maybe DeBoer can get something out of anyone.
Sue, tell us how you really feel :)
As to Clarkson, maybe DeBoer can save his career again, or at least get him to stop diving. I think it’s about 50-50 diving versus actually falling down from a lack of balance and skating skills with Clarkson.

That’s exactly how I feel! (And sorry to be late chiming in. A “quick” errand run got bogged down horribly.) I was in a “please, please, please let this not be Hitchcock or Therrien” panic mode. DeBoer’s neither of those guys, so I love this move!
And who doesn’t want a Clarkson-friendly coach? Clarkson’s totally the cornerstone of the franchise, right?
Oh, and I don’t think you can blame DeBoer for sucking in Florida. I mean, anyone would suck there! I’m sure he’s awesome! Or, at the very least, not Ken Hitchcock.
