Zach avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal today. We should probably be breaking down what this means for the Devils’ weekend, but it’s 4pm on a lazy summer Saturday, so instead we’d like to focus on something else that caught our eyes in hockey journalism this week. On Monday, the estimable Tom Gulitti posted part one of a fan Q&A with Travis. Included among the queries was this:
“Travis: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite movie:
1) Stargate
2) Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
3) Back to the Future
4) The Mighty Ducks”
Gentle Reader, this might be the greatest construct for questions ever. It’s not “what’s your favorite movie”, it’s “I don’t give a crap about you; what’s your favorite of my favorite movies”. Only, in this case (and with all due respect to the questioner) it’s a bunch of crappy movies (and “Raiders”, which we’ve got no beef with), one of which Travis had to admit he’d never seen. Think of the possibilities!
Zach: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite cookie:
1) Graham cracker
2) Chocolate chip
3) Un-adorned sugar cookie
4) Fig newton
Marty: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite Star Trek episode:
1) Sub Rosa
2) Darmok
3) Rascals
4) Trouble with Tribbles
Patty: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite color:
1) Jade green
2) Red
3) Ice blue
4) Pukey brownish purple
Zubrus: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite quilt pattern:
1) Mariner’s Compass
2) Trip Around the World
3) Star of Bethlehem
4) Drunkard’s Path
Tedenby: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite painting:
1) Death of Socrates
2) Raft of the Medusa
3) Three Musicians
4) A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte
Whichever Sesito, if any, is still on the team: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite pepper:
1) Jalapeno
2) Joe’s Long Cayenne
3) Sargent
4) Green bell
Josefson: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite book:
1) The Sound and the Fury
2) The Count of Monte Cristo
3) The Corrections
4) Shopaholic
Whitey: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite activity:
1) Not swimming
2) Swimming

Those are excellent questions! (Yours, not that dude’s.) Although I’d argue that only half of the movies on his list are crappy. :)
I feel like perhaps it would have been more fair to say that list of movies is pretty solidly middle-of-the-road (except “Raiders”). “Crappy” probably is too harsh a word. Now, if “The Cutting Edge” had been on there I would have been happy to praise the questioner as a person of exquisitely refined taste. :P
I’m not sure Zach has to pick his favorite cookie anymore. $6 million will buy a lot of each kind of cookie.
Regarding the Travis interview, just how competitive are those Zajac family ping pong games? Who know table tennis could draw blood, sweat & tears?
Hm, that’s a good point, Amy. Zach totally now instructs Boxworthy to just go to the store and buy everything.
Who know table tennis could draw blood, sweat & tears?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Maybe they play with rocks or shards of broken glass instead of ping pong balls?
thoughts on the new Parise deal??
About the Tedenby question, what, no Dogs Playing Poker? And you expect an answer from him?:
Sadly, I fear Zach’s favorite cookie may be the Fig Newton. Poor kid.
Whichever Sesito, if any, is still on the team: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite pepper
Hee!! I hope there is still a Sestito Puente on the team. Though I think now there might be one on the BJs (are they still your new Trannies?).
Whitey: Which of the following would you choose as your favorite activity:
1) Not swimming
2) Swimming
that should have been :^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: to that last bit. Jumped the gun :/
thoughts on the new Parise deal??
I wasn’t expecting anything more than one year and six million seems fair value, so it’s all good with me!
About the Tedenby question, what, no Dogs Playing Poker? And you expect an answer from him?:
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::;; But “Dogs Playing Poker” is awesome. We needed paintings that weren’t the greatest paintings ever made.
I don’t know about y’all, but I find Raft of the Medusa positively uplifting. Everytime I see it, I think “look at those dummies. Those dummies will never see how great this brushwork is. Dummies.”
Also, we have Tim Sestito Puente. The best named of the Sestito Puentes.
Woah, who the fu is Eric Boulton?
The best named of the Sestito Puentes.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I was actually thinking that it was Tim, and it was because the name sounded very familiar to me… It’s like an embarrassment of Tim riches.
What’s Eric Boulton got to do with this?
I was looking at the roster and I realized I have no idea who he is or where he came from.
Ew! Is he the Eric Boulton that used to be in Atlanta? Or was that guy even named Eric Boulton? Hm. This is all very curious, and I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit.
He is the one that used to be in Atlanta.
Ah, the offseason. When one idly peruses the team roster and is left shrieking “Who the hell is that???
When one idly peruses the team roster and is left shrieking “Who the hell is that???
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeah, and then when you look the guy up you find out it’s some ham-fisted former Thrasher. Things are looking up for the Devils!
When one idly peruses the team roster and is left shrieking “Who the hell is that???
Or that time of year when I peruse the team roster and am left shrieking,”Who the hell is that??? Oh… he played for us last year?”
(But seriously, Chris Butler to the Flames? Really? Thanks for keeping Derek Roy though. And so glad Kotalik is back. Cause that worked well.)
August 9th is my date for internet access again! Woo Hoo!! I hope everyone’s enjoying the summer!
He is the one that used to be in Atlanta.
And Buffalo! Bwahahaha. Don’t worry! He’s a good .00056 point per game player.
Yeah, and then when you look the guy up you find out it’s some ham-fisted former Thrasher
I wonder if he’s the designated “former Thrasher to be Ilya’s gofer”. Everyone thought that was Hedberg, but, in addition to the regular duties as Marty’s caddy, it looks like he might have to play more than a few token games as the back-up goalie.
The reaction (not here) to Zach’s contract has been, well, bizarre. Essentially, it seems to be, if Lou wasn’t going to sign Zach to a long-term contract immediately, then why get rid of Rolston? It’s as if nobody out there remembers the issues NJ has had when they haven’t had cap space. Plus, Winky’s not much use as a 3rd-liner and that’s what he’d be here. Taking up over $5MM in cap space.
I wonder if he’s the designated “former Thrasher to be Ilya’s gofer”.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I figure he’s just here for the henchman tryouts that Zach will be holding.
And I hadn’t put a ton of thought into Winky’s departure precipitating a long-term deal for Zach. Huh. Other Devils fans are much better at looking at the big picture than I am. Here I was just thinking “No more Winky! WOOOO!”
Don’t worry! He’s a good .00056 point per game player.
A more rough & tumble Andrew Peters, if you will.
then why get rid of Rolston?
My question is why someone would willingly waive an NTC to go to the Islanders. They’re not exactly on the top 10 trade destination list for most players.
A more rough & tumble Andrew Peters, if you will.
But will he do teammates’ laundry and star in low-budget hobby shop commercials? Because that’s where Petey really shines.
My question is why someone would willingly waive an NTC to go to the Islanders.
The easy luxury of low expectations? Or maybe it’s just nice because he won’t have to move his family far, if at all. Or he really loves blue & orange, and Edmonton is too cold. Those are literally the only three reasons someone would waive for the Isles.
My question is why someone would willingly waive an NTC to go to the Islanders.
I think that when Winky (actually, I should stop the disrespect, he has behaved like a mature adult through all of this), when Brian Rolston was waived last season (at least the second time) he said he would waive his NTC for any team that would take him. As far as I understand it, this hadn’t changed. The Isles, especially, work for him because his family doesn’t have to move and he would play in their top 6 as a LW, which is where he needs to be to be effective now.
What some of us – and probably, a lot of the league – see one way, may not be the same for everyone. Right now I’m looking for a job and the only way I’m going to get one is to take what everyone, from recruiters to employers believe is a huge step back in my career to positions which have a lot less responsibility than positions I have held in the past so I can gain new skills. Apparently, there is nobody in this country who believes I am either serious or worth the risk at my “advanced age” (I’m 47). So, I kind of understand where Brian is coming from, although I don’t think he could I identify with me, because he’s not looking at my financial difficulties, but he was being told he was worthless, which is what I am being told. It isn’t exactly fun.
Raiders.
And is there a Marty Retirement countdown clock anywhere?
Dude, we’ve put our “$3 million in cap space” guy on waivers already? I barely had time to learn to hate him! No fair!
More interesting, they’ve waived Colin White.
Schnookie
Dude, we’ve put our “$3 million in cap space” guy on waivers already? I barely had time to learn to hate him! No fair!
suenj97
More interesting, they’ve waived Colin White.
i’m guessing that larsson and taoromina are going to have a chance to make the club and play lotsa minutes…beyond that i don’t know what to think is going on here…are they going to play the season with cap space to spare in an economy move? is there a big acquisition they are going to try to make that we have no inkling of?
More interesting, they’ve waived Colin White.
Oh, well, yeah, but I’ve had PLENTY of time to learn to hate him. :P
is there a big acquisition they are going to try to make that we have no inkling of?
Are we getting Doughty? Because that would RAWK!
Oh, and Sue, I just want to say that now that you’ve compared yourself to Rolston (erstwhile Winky…), I suddenly want to hire him back. I’m like, “Wait, Rolston, you’re one of the cool ones!” Damn you for humanizing him! (Also, I really wish I could help you with your job hunt. If you need a character reference, just steer ‘em to me. Not that “You should get in touch with my friend Schnookie” generally inspires a lot of confidence in prospective employers, especially in this day and age of that horrid me-impostor Snooki, but you never know. Right? :P)
i get the idea, hypothetically speaking, that if bryce salvador were able to be taken off of the LTIR list and declared medically fit to play, that he would be bought out as well…i do think that lou wants to get younger and faster even if that means less experienced
larsson and taoromina
Or as I will think of them until the season starts, Swesus Christ and The Taor of Paor
Oh my god, The Taor of Paor is the most brilliant thing EVER. (Swesus Christ is also good, needless to say, but Taor of Paor? ::SWOONS!::)
he said he would waive his NTC for any team that would take him.
And that’s a refreshingly grown-up attitude to take. I suppose I’ve just been jaded by so many professional athletes acting like spoiled brats who only want to play on “good” teams or in “good” locations. (And thanks for sharing your story, too. I hope you find a job (and employer) that is worth your time & talents!)
The Taor of Paor
Amazing.
I’m guessing budgetary concerns must have applied here, I predict no trades are coming (but I’d love to be wrong). And good luck with the job hunt Sue! I will resist the impulse to rant and rave about the direction the country is taking but I hope things work out for you.
Add me to the list of well-wishers with your job hunt, Sue!
Taor of Paor
Holy crap. If this doesn’t become his officially sanctioned nickname, I will never forgive the Universe.
Thanks for all the good wishes on the job hunt, I appreciate it.
Not only is Taor of Paor brilliant, but it works much better than Swesus Christ because Lou will never let Larsson grow a beard during the regular season.
I forgot to comment about your Star Trek multiple choices, Sub Rosa and Rascals were supposed to be the not good choices right?
Sub Rosa and Rascals were supposed to be the not good choices right?
I actually enjoyed Rascals. I know I probably shouldn’t have, but “He’s my number one dad!” was genuinely funny, so… As for Sub Rosa, I wish someone had told me to throw being a completist to the wind and skip it. It was like watching an especially awful Devils PP for 45 fucking minutes.
Hey all! So much happening in hockey this summer and I’m missing most of it. I remember being completely bored with hockey last summer and counting the days to season opener. This summer has had all sorts of juicy little tidbits and I’m missing out on obsessing on any of it. On the brighter side, I haven’t been obsessing on any of it. Anyways, the house is about 2/3′s to 3/4′s unpacked. Most rooms only have a few boxes to be gone thru still and actually look like the space they are supposed to represent. Except the basement. Even the dog refuses to go down there at the moment. But we have to get the hockey den whipped into shape before the season begins!
Sue, Dave and I at 50 and 48 know all too well how you feel. Once the house is up to speed and Grace is settled into school, I’ll be starting my own job search. Not looking forward to that. Good luck, our thoughts are with you!
Oh and Ookies, if you want to write a blog post on the Islanders moving to Kansas City, you totally should. Because it’s going to happen, I just know it.
Kansas City Islanders here we come! Hm. I’m not sure how well Islanders works for Kansas but, hey, I’ll take what I can get!
Sue, we also want wish you the best with the job search. I would not let your age get you down. I take it you expect to be in the workforce in 10-15 years and the average job these days is a lot less, maybe 2.5 years. Anyone that thinks you are old is so living in the 90s. That you blog with a heavily 20-30 set (which some exceptions like Myra) makes your age more a number than a representation of you. Get them to focus on your skills.
Best Wishes and if you ever think about Dallas we will tell you what we know.
Hey Myra and Hub! Good to see you guys! I’m so glad to hear you’re getting handle on all the unpacking (which means you’re way ahead of the game compared to me, and I moved here five years ago… :D), but I’m a bit nervous that you won’t have your hockey room ready in time. This summer is FLYING! You’ve got way less time than you think! :P
I think you’ll be great Islanders fans. And if Utah can have the Jazz, KC can totes have the Islanders.
I’m not sure how well Islanders works for Kansas
Hopefully not as well as the Lakers worked for Los Angeles.
Good luck everybody with the job hunts! I’m looking to get out of Barnes and Noble by joining the air national guard, which will see me move to Long Island, I think. It’s a search and rescue group (regiment? squadron? thingy). Hopefully I don’t get a job jumping into the sea out of the helicopter when I could be flying it or doing computers.
Whoa, Tim, good luck with that! It sounds exciting. And dangerous. But mostly exciting!
Totally unrelated I had this awesome exchange at work last night (this is word-for-word exactly what was said):
Customer: I want the DVD “National Anthem Shampoo”.
Me: ::crickets::
Customer: I think that’s what it’s called. “National Anthem Shampoo”.
Me: Um… Could it be “National Lampoon”?
Customer: Does that have Chubby Chase in it?
Me: It has Chevy Chase.
Customer: Yeah! Chubby Chase!
Me: Okay. We have “National Lampoon Vacation”.
Customer: Is that the one where they go on vacation?
Get them to focus on your skills.
That appears to be the problem. I’m told that my skill set is no longer needed without additional skills, and the only way for me to get the additional skills is through work experience. However, I can’t be hired at the level my years of experience says I should be hired at because I lack the skills and when they see the years of experience (read, “age”) they balk at hiring me for anything where I could get the skills. I’ve made it clear I don’t care about the money or the title but I have to earn something because I have bills to pay, an internship doesn’t work. I’ve simply been told no. I don’t have the experience and I’m too “experienced” to be hired to get it. End of story. The advice I’ve been given, multiple times, is to get married, even if I have to find someone with money who needs a green card, because I am unemployable.
As for Sub Rosa, I wish someone had told me to throw being a completist to the wind and skip it.
Sub Rosa is definitely one of the worst episodes of the entire series. As for being a completist, I think there are still some early episodes I haven’t seen but I have heard the early ones weren’t so good either. And Pookie, don’t you work at a library? I knew it was trouble when libraries started carrying DVDs, our library here even has PS2 games for some crazy reason.
The advice I’ve been given, multiple times, is to get married, even if I have to find someone with money who needs a green card, because I am unemployable.
Really? Apparently the 1950s are alive and well. Keep fighting Sue!
I have heard the early ones weren’t so good either.
That’s very true. It gets good in Season 3. Seasons 1 and 2 have some real clunkers. Although nothing as bad as Sub Rosa. As for the PS2 games, my library carries Wii, Playstation, and xBox games! The only problem is, they refuse to carry anything with an M rating. The fact that we lend out R-rated movies doesn’t seem to balance out this hysterical notion that M-rated video games are the downfall of society. Dude, if kids can’t check out R-rated videos with their cards, just make it so they can’t rent M-rated games, either. But make it so I can rent Call of Duty and give it a whirl before spending money on it! Gah!
As for the PS2 games, my library carries Wii, Playstation, and xBox games!
I knew Idaho was behind the times, you have a better selection even without the M rated games. Speaking of M rated games, I saw Grand Theft Horsie for $20 yesterday so I bought it, now I can see what all the talk is about.
Ooh, I hope you love Grand Theft Horsie! So far, nothing else we’ve played has come close to it. :(
I’m so sorry, Sue. That is so wrong and maddening and just, just so WRONG! We are expected to stay in the workforce for another 20 years to reach “retirement” age but yet no one wants to hire us past 40.
Grand Theft Horsie is awesome. I need to save up my monies for Dragon Age 2, but I have so little dosh and the Gamera Mystery Science Theater box set just came out. Decisions, decisions.
Tim, get the Gamera set and not Dragon Age 2, I have heard lots of bad things about it. I am currently enjoying the hell out of the first one though. Not to mention, the Gamera set is full of awesomeness, the first Gamera episode is one of my all time favorites.
Dwarven warriors aren’t friend to children.
colin white has signed a one year contract with san jose for one million dollars…i’m really glad for him, while his play hasn’t been nearly the same since his eye injury, he always worked hard and did not complain–unlike some people we could name even one with a “C” on his sweater–so i hope he has a great season…i wonder if lou had looked around the league a little bit to see if there was any interest for him at a reduced price?
i wonder if lou had looked around the league a little bit to see if there was any interest for him at a reduced price?
There’s no real way to reduce the price, at least not during the summer. The old “we’ll pick up part of the contract if you’ll take him off our hands” doesn’t exist under this CBA and during the summer, you can’t do re-entry waivers, so there’s no way to say yes, we are giving him to you at half price.
You had to trade him at full price, which wasn’t happening, or waive him/buy him out. If what you mean is, wait until the start of the season and then try re-entry waivers, teams are set then. Unless a team had injuries, White would have wound up playing in the minors, which Lou didn’t want to do to him (and NJ would have been paying his full salary, it just wouldn’t be on the cap). He wanted to give him a chance to play somewhere else.
what i was trying to say–and i did a lousy job of it, lol–was lou calling around the league after realizing there were no trades to be made for colin white and his $3MM dollar salary and then trying to find out from any of the other teams which clubs might be interested after white cleared waivers so that white might have some ideas who to call after his release was made official…
Lou may already have known. I wonder how many of the calls during the summer included a variation of these words from the other GM, “We could be interested, but not if we have to pay him that much money” (include the curse words of your choice, depending on the rival GM).
I can only assume that the Sharks wanted Colin White because they’ve been displeased with how deep they’ve gone in the playoffs in recent years. They want someone with more choking experience, someone who can really lead them to lose in the first round with more consistency.

PS – when do we start thinking about the amazing/super leagues? It was fun last year!

I propose to the court that this year we don’t limit people to western/eastern conference players.
I propose to the court that this year we don’t limit people to western/eastern conference players.
As much as I loved the WC/EC twist, I also think we should nix it for this year. It’s too hard to trade people when half of your league can’t take your player off your hands!
I also agree that we should be able to pick from either conference this year. That definitely makes it easier to make trades!
Oooh that would be a revolution! I’m just scared I might end up with a few Bruins though. I’ll probably remove them all from my draft list just to be safe! You should probably do the same with the Rangers.
I’m in favor of this switch as well!
I’m also in favor of being able to draft from either conference this year.
Grrrreg, that’s a good idea. I played out of the East last year, and I definitely strove to avoid Rangers. Of course, none of the Rangers did anything to make a person consider wanting him on their fantasy team last year, so it wasn’t that hard… Heh.
And I think we have a consensus now, right? I mean, anyone who didn’t know to vote here now doesn’t deserve a vote. :P
I’ve never participated in the amazing/super leagues, but I would think allowing each participant to use players from across the league would make it easier to trade. And, when I have been in fantasy leagues in the past, I’ve always removed all Rangers from my draft list, because I can’t root for a Ranger to do well (and why would you want to root for players on your fantasy team to suck?). I had Jagr on my team when he was a Capital, then he was traded to the Rangers and I immeditately put him on the trading block.
As a NJ fan, I say, if you’re a hockey fantasy owner, just say no to Rangers!!!!
As a NJ fan, I say, if you’re a hockey fantasy owner, just say no to Rangers!!!!
Maybe that should be our one drafting rule — no Rangers for Devils fans.

Thanks, just what the rest of us want, more Rangers.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Our diabolical plan is working to perfection! That’s why they call us Devils fans — we’re so diabolical. (See what I did there?)
I don’t mind the new rule change. As it was, half my players ended the season as Leafs anyways.
I still don’t have internet because the TWC guy was a no show. But you know who did show up?? A crackhead who broke into my car. I’m only missing my 400 yr old GPS (which was a filthy hooker) and my $5 Wal mart car charger. The black market has clearly lowered it’s standards.
I shall amuse myself thinking of the GPS’s new “owner” gettting lured into the ghetto then losing satellites or recalculating. Hahahahaha Sucker.
The black market has clearly lowered it’s standards.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I’m so sorry about someone breaking into your car! And here I was annoyed that I got hit by a giant chunk of flying tire and it caused exactly $7-more-than-my-deductible in damages.
The east coast sounds like a dangerous place.
Hey all, I’m back to the land of the livin’. Long time no talk! How is everyone?
Hey andrew! How’s that baby doing?
Did you know Hub, Kid and I are now ex-patriot Texans living in Missouri?
Hi guys! I hope you won’t mind me posting this photo of Lucic with the Stanley Cup in Vancouver on the weekend :-(

BOO! LUUUUUUUUUUUCH!
Are you guys having a great summer? Your quilts and garden look amazing! Wewt!
Hi Myra! Congrats on the move. I hope those Blues fans aren’t too tough on you guys!
Dylan’s great! Although, he’s not a baby any more, he turned one two weeks ago! I know, already. It’s insane. He’s walking, running, climbing, barking orders in a language we don’t understand, etc. It’s pretty entertaining. And tiring. Very tiring.
How are you guys doing?
I misread that “he turned two one week ago” and nearly passed out. Happy belated birthday, Dylan!
I misread that “he turned two one week ago” and nearly passed out.
Same here. I’m blaming it on two weeks of accessing the internets through a mobile device due to a defective laptop.
And I agree with Carole, Ookies. Your quilts look AMAZING.
Thanks, Amy and Carol! It’s been a good summer for quilting. But I’m ready for hockey. The skunk weed trees (I don’t know what they’re actually called but they’re weeds that smell like skunk or peanut butter, depending on who you ask) along the highway have all turned high-autumn red and it’s killing me.
I hope those Blues fans aren’t too tough on you guys!
We may have to worry about the Habs (next door) and dead thing (across the street) fans! Myra is probably plotting an invitation for a pot roast meal to a former Star D-man when the Pens are in town playing the Kings for pre-season. I believe she is also starting a campaign to bring the Scouts back to KC.
I believe she is also starting a campaign to bring the Scouts back to KC.
Well, the citizens of Nassau County have all but gift-wrapped the Islanders for you.
Happy Birthday to Dylan! Has he been fitted for his Sharks onesie yet? And on a related note, is anyone else giddily anticipated the first Jets-Sharks rumble of the modern era?
(Wait, do one-year-olds still wear onesies or have they graduated to actual pants and shirts by then? I know nothing about babies. Nothing.)
And on a related note, is anyone else giddily anticipated the first Jets-Sharks rumble of the modern era?
Apparently, this will take place in Winnipeg sometime in January. I really hope the Jets have enough sense to play music from West Side Story. Probably not.
I hope they get their fans to do synchronized finger snapping in tense moments!
Synchronized finger snapping should absolutely be required.
Dylan is a year old! How can that be??? Heh. You will be tired for a while, lots of chasing in your future!
Grace started her Freshman year today!?! How can that be??? And she is now at least an inch taller than me.
I’m on pins and needles waiting for time to go pick her up. First day in a new school where she basically knows no one. Eeep.
Poor Grace! That’s rough. I hope she finds some cool peeps. I started high school at the same school I’d been at for years, but I remember there being this sort of undeclared understanding with my previous group of friends that we were all ready to move on to new friends, so maybe there’s more social opportunities than it sounds on paper?
EEEEEH! I think we just sold our house!!!
Seriously?!? I’m keeping my fingers crossed the deal goes through!
We still have a ways to go but we have accepted their offer!
That is SO exciting, Myra! And it sounds like it really didn’t take long at all. That’s fantastic news!
And catching up here (hockey season must be getting closer — there are more people around here! :D), I can’t believe that Dylan is a year old already. How can that be???
Congrats on selling the house Myra!! I wouldn’t worry too much about Gracie. I moved to a new school district my freshman year and it wasn’t a bad transition at all. And Grace sounds WAAAAAAAYYYYY cooler than I was… am.
Does Dylan get his own fantasy team this season? I figure if the NHL can have Bryan Murray than our league can also have a GM that speaks his own language and poops his pants.

So, Commish, when should we start emailing you about our registration?
I figure if the NHL can have Bryan Murray than our league can also have a GM that speaks his own language and poops his pants.
DUDE. Oh my god, that was funny.
Also, I know!!! One year already. Dylan already wore and grew out of his Sharks onesie. We looked for a Sabres one, but couldn’t find any. I was a little disappointed.
Myra, tell Gracie to have some fun and take everything in stride. The first month of high school is tough…friends or no friends. And congrats on the house! We’re currently in the process of short selling ours. It’s no big deal, just realized that we were spending more than we needed to, time to downsize. Plus I had to get a new car after the back surgery, so that cost a bit. But it’s all good because it’s been a long time since I bought myself a new car.
Kathleen, there’s no real “rules” when it comes to the whole Super/Amazing League registration. You can e-mail me whenever you want, I won’t lose your request. I’m very organized, I swear. It’s a_d_mattson(at)yahoo(dot)com
I figure if the NHL can have Bryan Murray than our league can also have a GM that speaks his own language and poops his pants.

How are you doing after the surgery, andrew? Other than having to buy a new car, has the recovery been good? (And I’m glad you’re all chill with house transitions. That’s such a drag to have to go through, but hey — new house! Less house! That’s all good, right?)
andrew, I hope the back surgery went well! And you got a new car out of it, right? My friend gave me a yoga dvd to help my lower back, but I look like I’m losing a violent game of Twister to myself. I think the rationale is the pain in your arms from holding your body up only using your thumbs helps you forget any problems you had previously.
And the Blime Warner guy finally came yesterday! He gave me a five minute tutorial on how to use my remote. Not. Kidding. I wanted to give him a five minute lecture on how to keep a previously scheduled appointment but I’m trying to be less of a bitch this year. Heh. Until hockey starts…
Speaking of hockey, This whole summer, my Sabres calendar has been of players that are no longer Sabres. Butler, Connolly, now Kennedy. Can’t wait til I get to Rivet in October!

And that’s fantastic about the Sabres calendar. Nothing like an off-season of churn to keep those calendars up-to-date.
The surgery went well! I mean, I wouldn’t recommend anyone try it, but it was fine. I’m still working on the recovery side. The pain is mostly gone but there’s still quite a bit of nerve damage to clear up. They said it could take up to six months to get rid of all the numbness and muscle issues. But hey, it beats getting addicted to pain killers.

Ha! Well, I hope it helps you out. Yoga is some difficult shit.
And seriously, my goal before the start of the season is to make my way through all of the personnel changes in Buffalo this summer. Holy crap. I mean the Sharks did it too, but with them it’s easy…just cut and paste the Wild’s roster from last year.
This whole summer, my Sabres calendar has been of players that are no longer Sabres.
That’s why I ripped Staffy out of the spring portion of the calendar and have been using him to cover all the dearly departed Sabres. If I get sick of his mug, Goose or Crunchy are waiting in the wings.
Which of you Devils fans is going to be responsible for keeping Travis in block crayons, coloring books and Sprite for the next 8-10 weeks?
I’m glad to hear you’re doing well-ish, andrew! I suppose it sounds like a better alternative to crippling addiction. Maybe.

And Colin White! Don’t forget him! (Just kidding. How on earth could anyone NOT forget Colin White? That would be impossible. He’ll just bring with him a general feeling of malaise and losingness, but nothing that makes you go, “Whoa. Colin White. Yikes.” More of, “Whoa. Colin White. That’s right. He’s… still on this team.”)

Dude, I’m so depressed about that. I was starting to get excited for this season, figuring maybe the Devils had gotten all of the stupid crap out of the way last year and things could be better now. Or not. And judging from the way there hasn’t been a single injury to a Devil in the last few years that didn’t get completely fucked up somehow, I’m guessing we won’t see Travis again until March. See? I’m in mid-season pessimism form already!

Well thank you! I probably made it sound worse than it is…I should rephrase: I can walk again, so I am 1000% better than I was in March/April. Yeah, addiction probably would have been fun for a while, but they never seem to end well, do they?
Colin White! Boom! People over at FtF were wondering if he’ll take one for the team and wear #9 so that fans can still wear their Ian White sweaters from last year. I’m not entirely sure there are that many Ian White jerseys floating around out there.

Ahahaha! I’m pretty sure the only one’s floating around are in the locker room. And they were saying that over here about some guy we got not taking Gaustad’s #28. (I’ve had the internet one day and I’m already too lazy to look up the roster. Robyn Reghr maybe? He’s a Sabre now right?) I think there are more Goose jerseys though, so I thought they had a valid argument. Oh, and besides the major point that no matter how much star power you have, taking a current player’s number is a d bag thing to do. Sheesh.
I’m in mid-season pessimism form already!
Whoa now. You don’t want to peak too soon! What will you do in mid-season if you’ve already burnt through your allotment of pessimism and snark?
no matter how much star power you have, taking a current player’s number is a d bag thing to do.
Unless there’s a cash donation or a shiny thing given to accompany said number robbing, of course.
mcguffers, now that you have the internets, come join the rest of us in basking at the wonder and incoherence that is Roy-Z on Twitter.

That is a d-bag thing to do. You don’t take another guys number. Unless of course you’re Ovechkin and it’s the All Star game.
As I am lazy myself, I won’t be checking the roster either. I know it’s not Ehrhoff, not that he or Regher have a whole lot of star power to begin with.
Hi lovelies. Happy almost September. Sighhh.
Hi Alix! Happy almost September to you too! We just lit a fire in the grill for the sole purpose of toasting marshmallows, and in the darkness we heard geese in formation off in the distance. It was like fall! (But a lot hotter. And there’s only tennis on when we come inside…)
Hee! That sounds LOVELY!
