It is extremely difficult to understand what prompted the decision-makers at Versus, when looking at this year’s NHL schedule, to choose to air a Colorado/Toronto game instead of anything else.

I can alomst see why it happened. The Pens are are tomorrow night and they are also on the most times of any team this year, so they are out. TB is playing the Panthers, and an intra-Florida match-up is thought to be ratings death (I’d prefer it, but that’s me, in fact, I’m watching it on the free CI preview). The best game is actually the Sharks-Ducks, but that’s the late game and it means you probably lose most of the east coast.
That leaves you with the Nashville/Edmonton game or the Colorado/Toronto game. They went with the Denver/Toronto match-up, thinking people on the east coast might watch because of the Original six stupidity, forgetting that we all hate the Leafs.
I don’t hate the Leafs. I just don’t really care about the Leafs outside of giving kudos to Brian Burke for standing up for gay rights.
thinking people on the east coast might watch because of the Original six stupidity, forgetting that we all hate the Leafs.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Your reasoning makes sense, Sue, but surely the Versus programmers could have opted for “none” and just not had hockey on tonight. :P (I’m also watching FLA/TB, but with the sound off.)
I just don’t really care about the Leafs outside of giving kudos to Brian Burke for standing up for gay rights.
I have to admit, my admiration for people in pro sports who will give outspoken support for gay rights has led in very strange directions in the hockey world. I mean, Brian Burke and Sean Avery? Really? When will someone normal speak up?
I have to admit, my admiration for people in pro sports who will give outspoken support for gay rights has led in very strange directions in the hockey world. I mean, Brian Burke and Sean Avery? Really? When will someone normal speak up?
 For me it’s mostly an existence of: “Brian Burke flung feces at Bobby Orr while insulting the Queen of England? Meh.
And he said gays should have the right to marry while he did it? WAY TO GO BURKIE!”
I believe Monday and Tuesday are the days Vlersus has promised the the NHL they will broadcast. I don’t think telling Bettman, “The schedule was crap” was a contactual option – no matter how true it may have been from hockey perspective.
I’m not sure Burke is all that unusual. For all the horrendous stories we hear about parents who reject their gay children (and they do exist, I hear about them from my brother and his husband) the thing most likely to make someone an active and open supporter of gay rights is that they have a gay relative.
The Lightning seem to be genetically incapable of staying out of the penalty box.
Sorry, I know this is completely off topic, please forgive me, but I just had to share this with y’all.
I gave Grace her first driving lesson today.
Myra, that’s excellent! How did it go?
Myra, WHAAAAAAAAAAAA???? How young is the driving age in the godforsaken state you’ve moved to? The only explanation for Grace being old enough to be learning to drive is that they let TODDLERS drive there. :P
She is 14 and a half and will be getting her Learner’s Permit in six months. I took her to a closed mall parking lot to start getting her acclimated. Plus the more practice she gets, the safer she will be in the long run.
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little frightening. Besides having a lead foot and running over one curb, she did fine. :P Defintely showed progress as the lesson went on. Mainly worked on starting and stopping and the feel of steering.
Also, it’s mid-October and we may actually have to turn on the heat tonight. I’ve never had to do that before. Hello to mid-western weather.
Man, that’s just CRAZY that driving-enabled Grace is just around the corner! (I remember my first “driving around an abandoned parking lot” experience behind the wheel. I managed to get the car stuck on an embankment and Boomer had to struggle a bit to get it back off of it. I have hated driving ever since. :P)
And WOO HOOO! for having the heat on, in for-reals Fall weather!
I just made chicken stock after roasting a bunch of leftover chicken parts with carrots and onions. It smells like Thanksgiving in here. Speaking of fall. (And that’s my story. Wasn’t it interesting?)
I made salmon with wilted garlicky spinach for supper and Claude went nuts while I was cooking the fish. He didn’t want to eat it…he was just going crazy because of the smell while it was cooking.
Awww! Claude’s such a cutie! We don’t eat fish, so I can only imagine what the smell of it cooking would do to the cats of stately IPB Manor. They would probably lose their minds.
Aw man, I wish we could smell via computer! I’m making chicken pot pie tomorrow night and Wednesday is supposed to get even colder, low 30′s for the lows, that is cold for me. (Yes, I’m going to freeze this winter.) So I’m going to make chili on Wednesday! If I’m making chili, chicken and dumplings and/or vegetable beef soup, then fall is here!
Myra, you guys are colder than we are in Northern NJ right now. I still haven’t brought the herbs in and I don’t expect to have to for a few more weeks. I have pulled out the down blanket and the wool socks (it’s going into the 40s tonight), but no heat yet.
Whoa — pot pie season? That is cold! (I have been seriously hankering for some pot pie lately, so if you want to send me some, I won’t complain.)
I can just imagine how your cats act when cooking fish, I know how Buddy acts when we make anything involving beef or pork.
Gracie has been learning how to make pie crusts from scratch and wants more practice, so oh darn, I guess we could make pot pie for her to practice on.
Man, that’s so rough, the sacrifices you make for Gracie’s pie crust skill development! (I’m going through a “learning how to can stuff” phase right now, and made the most insanely delicious pear jam this weekend. My cans didn’t all seal properly, though, so now we all have to make the massive sacrifice of making another batch. I know how that kind of suffering is, yo. :P)
And what is going on in this Florida/BOLTS! game? I’m not paying very close attention, but every time I look up, another goal has been scored.
Personally, I think that signing Gilroy cursed the Bolts.
Wait, Gilroy can be a curse? But… but… I believed Joe Micheletti… ::lower lip trembles::
Myra, that is SHOCKING that you’re teaching Grace to drive. She should do like my nephew, who’s a middle kid, and put off getting her license until she really needs it. Doesn’t she know that once she has her license she’ll be running errands for you all the time? I think my nephew saw his older brother get roped into a lot of driving he didn’t want to do. :P
I didn’t get started at the beginning of the TB game. Did they show the Tesla coil? That’s what I wanted to see!
And when did Soupy join the Panthers?!
And Myra, I was going to visit Tulsa this weekend, but if there’s going to be pot pie and chili at your house……. hm.
You guys are making me so hungry. SO hungry.
I think my nephew saw his older brother get roped into a lot of driving he didn’t want to do.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That happened to me. In that I saw other people doing any driving at all. ::shudder::
In that I saw other people doing any driving at all. ::shudder::
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: My poor drivers’ ed teacher had to be the first person in a car with me driving. Him, and 3 other driving students. ::shudder::
Our neighbors sons were stairsteps between my sister and me with their youngest son being the youngest of us all. Because of that, he went thru us older three learning how to drive. He was constantly being terrified by our antics. He is now a driver’s ed teacher. No lie. He had already faced the worst, no one could possibly be worse than the three of us were. He is also one of the calmest people I know. Trial by fire, perhaps?
BTW, I made a 96 on my driving test but totalled my mom’s car a week to the day later.
Oh and pear jam! Yum!
That’s crazy, Myra! He sounds scarred. :P
Hey Patty, did you see that Enystrom and Fistric are road roomies? Heh!
And come on up, we’ll have plenty to share!
I just saw that Nystrom tweeted that! He’s lucky. I bet Fistric is the best roomie on the team.
I went from being in a pretty good mood to extremely pissed off in 45 seconds flat and the Sabres are playing the Habs tonight. That NEVER ends well.
BTW, I made a 96 on my driving test but totalled my mom’s car a week to the day later.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
So, how’s the hockey going tonight?
I’m fairly certain about one thing…Ottawa may look worse than NJ did this time last year.
Is Ottawa trying to get their own Larsson (HBTN)? Because they can’t have him!!!
Don’t worry…Alfredsson’s never played for NJ before. There’s no way they can convince Lou to trade Swedes.
Alfredsson’s never played for NJ before.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s funny because it’s true.
If we could convince Lou our cats had played for NJ before, our cats would have contracts registered with the NHL. Hmmm….
If we could convince Lou our cats had played for NJ before
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Well, we can just list Rollie under the name we call her when she’s in trouble — “Rolston”. Lou will be like, “Hey, third time’s a charm!”
Stars just beat the BJs. It just seems kinda hollow. Poor Rick Nash. Even Modano just tweeted “Rick Nash please ask for a trade.”
Maybe instead of a trade, Rick should ask for his coach and GM to be replaced? (I hope Rick never demands a trade. I like the idea of a superstar-caliber guy trying to stay with a small-market team. ::sniffle:: It’s so sad for him that his team sucks.)
I agree, I’d like to see him stay but it does seem pretty sad for him.
I don’t think the heating vents are open in the hockey den (basement) but I’m too cold to get out from under my blanket to check. And Dave is not here to save me. (He’s flying back from Chicago even as we speak.)
Must keep typing to keep my fingers from freezing….
Oooh, I hate it when it’s too cold to get out from under a blanket! I’ll try to use all my psychic memories to open your heating vents. (Is it working?)
Also, I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying this year’s Bruins. Heh Heh Heh.
No, but laughing at the Bruins/Canes game has helped me warm up immensely.
I just wish the Bruins would still manage to beat the Canes. Lose to a bunch of other teams…that’s fine (well, beat the Rangers, of course). But they’ve lost to the Canes twice now. That just encourages the Canes.
Off to the airport to pick up Dave.
Some idiot has turned their dog loose in the neighborhood, after we were warned there is a black bear wandering around. I swear, people are getting stupider with every passing year.
Could be worse, could have been the idiot in Ohio who turned loose all his exotic animals and then killed himself. Just awful. As David said, having all those animals was for him, not for the actual care and well being of the animals. Sickening to see them having to put down all those animals.
End rant.
Myra, I love, love, love your icon picture! LOVE IT!
Thank you! As I told Patty, since I’m not blogging at present, I felt the need for an updated pic. This was from the Dallas Tourism site. I thought it turned out quite nicely. My little homage to the Great State Fair of Texas.
What is this nonsense? I hate you, NHL schedule maker.
Isn’t that a cool avatar? I love the Texas Star. Did you know Kari Lehtonen has it represented on his helmet? He’s a cool dude.
I don’t think I’ve seen a pic of Kari’s latest helmet. He seems to have done well in locking in on the icons of Texas for his helmet designs.
Rats, Cards just scored. Yes, we are cheating on hockey tonight to watch the Texas Rangers in the Word Series. Woot! I must say I like watching baseball and golf more now with HD. They are both very pretty.
And we had chili tonight, it was yummy! I don’t think temps made it above the mid-40′s today.
Ok, so maybe I get a little bored watching baseball.
I’ll stop now.
I’m watching the game, too, Myra! There’s only one hockey game on and I want them both to lose, so it’s not really cheating, right?
It only got up to about 65 today! And my lawn looks all green and lush (comparatively) after our recent storms.
You have a point about Tor v Wpg.
Yeah for cooler temps in Texas! I’m so glad your lawn survived! My sister’s water bill was over $500 one month this summer just from watering their lawn (you know they have that big corner lot). Our lawn here is mostly weeds. Left unattended for so long I guess. We need to do some major work on it this spring.
Yes, we are cheating on hockey tonight to watch the Texas Rangers in the Word Series.
It’s Jets-Leafs. You’re cheating on nothing. I’m not sure you’d even call that hockey. (But I absolutely cannot read the words “Texas Rangers” without mentally appending a “Walker” to them.)
Thanks, now I have the “Walker, Texas Ranger” theme stuck in my head.
Hi guys. I must confess, I haven’t been watching any hockey at all. I guess I should start rooting for a new team or something because the Canucks just don’t do it for me at all. Even Mike feels the same way. And since they lost 4-0 to the Rangers the other day, who cares? Luongo even got boo-ed at the end of that game. I guess I only want to cheer for winners? Wow. I’m the worst hockey fan on the planet!
Thanks for listening.
The Stars need fans, Carol! They’re warm and fuzzy and handsome and cheerful. :D
Did they boo Luongo because he didn’t score? Because in order to win, somebody has to score. :D
Did they boo Luongo because he didn’t score? Because in order to win, somebody has to score.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Ooooh, BURN! Heh.
And Carol, I’m so sorry the Canucks are so poopy! You could be a Devils fan! I realize this forum is hardly the best advertisement for them, though… :P (I really do love them, mind you. I’m especially loving watching them this season, with all this fresh, young blood on the roster. New guys! Young Swedes! It’s awesome! And starts at 4:00 in your time zone!)
Just got back from my book club. Good to see that, even with the Cup hangover, the Bruins can still stomp all over the Leafs (and the Bruins fans can still chant “Thank you Kessel” when one of the players they got with the draft picks comes back to haunt Burke – and Phil).
I’m loving the Bruins’ Cup hangover, but it’s always good to see the Leafs lose. Heh heh heh.
You know that once the Leafs were 3-0, fans in Toronto had planned the parade and were visualizing Kessel with the Conn Smythe. This game needed to happen.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: That’s what I love about Canadian hockey fans — their sense of perspective.
That’s what I love about Canadian hockey fans — their sense of perspective.
Just because that perspective comes from a fun-house mirror…
Now, on to the awful task facing me for the rest of the evening…I have to root for…Brent Sutter’s team. They’re playing the Rangers. I know it’s necessary, but I already feel like I need a shower.
I know it’s necessary, but I already feel like I need a shower.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeah, that’s a tough one, but sometimes you just have to do horrible things in support of hating the Rangers.
Ok, Carol. But that means you can’t cheer for them when they start playing awesome in a couple weeks :P
I really do love them, mind you. I’m especially loving watching them this season, with all this fresh, young blood on the roster
Speaking of fresh, young Devils talent, Rob Ray & Kylvester spent a good chunk of the first intermission break in yesterday’s Sabres game discussing the Devils need to find the heir to Marty’s throne. (Or should it be crease?) They seemed almost offended that the Devils didn’t have a young guy sitting at Marty’s knee, soaking up all the goalie knowledge he can. (I think the donut crumbs would hamper any knowledge soaking, but that’s just me.)
the heir to Marty’s throne. (Or should it be crease?)
