We realize we haven’t really said a single word about the Devils yet this year, but there’s a good reason for that. You see, the time we used to spend thinking deep thoughts about the Devils and then maybe even blogging about them has been taken up by a new hobby. This new hobby has completely and utterly consumed our lives — when we’re not actually engaged in the time-consuming aspects of actively engaging in it, we’re reviewing our past successes, dreaming big dreams for the future, or just sitting back and admiring our handiwork.
So, while we have no opinions to offer about the Devils, we can highly recommend that Travis and JJ take some of their downtime while recovering from their injuries to enjoy the wonderful world of home preserving.
Yeah, we’re cool.

Oho, the Kings don’t think they need Quick to be able to beat the Devils? They’re about to learn a painful lesson! Mark my words!
…You realize, Schnookie, that you’ve just agreed to take all the blame if the Devils lose tonight, right?
Meh. NJ can suck against any goalie. Sucking against back-ups is a talent of theirs. But, LA fans seem to think NJ needs to trade for a goalie, and that they can get Lou to trade Zach for the guy in net tonight. Yes, they are delusional. They should realize he’s never played for NJ before…so Lou has no interest in him.
Yum. Now I want some pumpkin butter.
I think we should definitely blame Schnookie when they lose.
They should realize he’s never played for NJ before…so Lou has no interest in him.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I am perfectly willing to take the blame tonight! It wouldn’t be the first time it was my fault they lost.
Yes, they are delusional. They should realize he’s never played for NJ before…so Lou has no interest in him.

So is Palmieri bad at hockey, or is it just that he’s stuck wearing 12?
Pear & Pumpkin Ale preserves sound amaaaaaaaazing!
He was good when he was wearing 32.
He was good when he was wearing 32.
Yeah, exactly! I thought I remembered him not sucking. But now when I see him I first think “Rolston”, so that’s got to be dragging him down.
Pear & Pumpkin Ale preserves sound amaaaaaaaazing!
For reals, yo. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw the recipe, but figured I should make it because our local brewery does a great pumpkin ale and our local orchard is having a nutso delicious pear season. I’m really glad I went for it, because these preserves are RIDONK.
They should only give 12 and 15 to players who already really, really suck. Like Boulton and Janssen. Guys who have no hope of contributing.
Guys who have no hope of contributing.
Like Sykora. :P
I’m really glad I went for it, because these preserves are RIDONK.
Oookies, two minutes for abuse of the English language.
Like Sykora. :P
He does a lovely imitation of Elias sitting in the box.
Oookies, two minutes for abuse of the English language.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::: You’re right. That was totes egregious.
Oookies, two minutes for abuse of the English language.
Yeah, but Boomer will sit in the box instead of Schnookie and no one will notice!
Anyone else surprised by Clarkson’s apparent competence when it comes to being the responsible adult on a line of kids tonight?
Anyone else surprised by Clarkson’s apparent competence when it comes to being the responsible adult on a line of kids tonight?
It’s a bit scary. Before we know it, he’s going to be in the front seat of Mills’s car being all, “If you kids don’t settle down, I’ll turn this car around!”
And that no-goal is BULLSHIT! BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Didn’t the NHL get rid of the in the crease rule after 1999? Or, was that for every team except NJ?
I thought… wait, but… didn’t we get rid of the “in the crease” rule? Unless there’s goalie interference (which should be a penalty) that goal should stand.
HE DIDN’T EVEN TOUCH THE GOALIE!
I’m hoping the future generations use that highlight of Zubrus to demonstrate the proper “blocking a shot with your schnozz” technique.
Really, the only reason he took it in the face was a flukey shot. Looked like tthat King almost whiffed, but sort of bounced the puck up.
Well, at least Tallinder got to wipe out a goalie, since he got called for being in the crease.
I find it funny how multiple LA bloggers and reporters think Parise for Bernier is totally a fair trade and Lou is totally humming and hawwing over giving the team’s best player straight up for an unproven backup goalie because Marty’s old.
Larsson (HBTN) can’t be turning 19 in a couple of weeks! It’s not Christmastime yet!
Larsson (HBTN) can’t be turning 19 in a couple of weeks! It’s not Christmastime yet!
I guess Christmas is coming early this year!
Larsson (HBTN) can’t be turning 19 in a couple of weeks! It’s not Christmastime yet!
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: We’ll be putting up our tree this coming weekend.
I love reading other teams’ bloggers trade proposals. They’re always so rational. My all-time fave was a Sabres blogger back in the Biron/Miller platoon days suggesting the Sabres solve their logjam at goalie while also solving the Devils’ salary cap issues by trading Biron and Miller for Colin White and Marty. I love a trade proposal that solves a team’s “too many guys at position X” problem by trading all of the guys for another team’s future HOFer.
At the rate Tallinder’s going tonight, I really hope Larsson (HBTN) isn’t learning too much from him.
Palmieri, your fired.
Palmieri never took penalties like that when he was wearing 32.
#12 is cursed. Pretty soon he’ll be winking at the camera.
Okay, whatever you think of Clarkson, his little wraparound didn’t deserve those love taps.
WOOOOOOO! Running Bernier the hell over finally works!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, Zubrus was just in the crease. How does that one count? That one actually was goaltender interference, wasn’t it?
Pretty soon he’ll be winking at the camera.
[insert "Psycho" music here]
So THAT counts, but the Clarkson line doesn’t?
Bernier knocked it in himself. It can’t be GI. But, who knows what they may do.
Instead of giving Zubrus Lyle Odelein’s number, they gave him his nose during intermission.
Okay, I’m pretty sure we shouldn’t trade Parise for Bernier now. He gets run over a lot.
That’s more of a Brindamour nose, I think.
Okay, I’m pretty sure we shouldn’t trade Parise for Bernier now. He gets run over a lot.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Yeah, I was considering the deal, but after scouting Bernier for half a game, I’m not sure he’d be worth it.
That’s more of a Brindamour nose, I think.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I knew I’d seen it somewhere before.
And seriously, what’s Tallider’s problem with Hedberg? Has he passed up on any opportunity to run over him tonight?
Maybe he’s upset that all the other Swedes are living together and never invite him to their meatball parties.
WOOOOOOOO!!!!!! AN UNCONTROVERSIAL GOAL!
Holy shit! Who knew Patty still had that in him?!
As for Tallinder, I think we all know why the other Swedes don’t want to go to his “meatball parties”.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! And there I was while that play was unfolding, all “too much passing, Devils! Who do you think you are? The A Line??”
Maybe he’s upset that all the other Swedes are living together and never invite him to their meatball parties.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Clearly the Devils need to spend skatearound firing shots at Zubrus’s schnozz.
WOOOOOO!!!!!
WOOO!!!!!!! IT’S A DELUGE!
So, I wonder how the LA bloggers & reporters who have been pushing the Bernier for Parise deal will spin that period…
My stupid computer froze, but:
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I’m back on the Bernier bandwagon, man must be a huge Devils fan!
I’m back on the Bernier bandwagon, man must be a huge Devils fan!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! But so’s that Kinkaid kid, and we can have him AND Zach. So there.
Buh, Chuckles is awful. Zubrus would have slammed that in the back of the net. Why can’t Chuckles be the sort of all-the-time goal scoring sensation that Zubrus is?
I want to know who says that a player can’t get a goal and an assist on the same goal. Elias totally deserves both on that second goal. I may be a little biased however as he is powering the Bureau to victory. And who would have thought I should have played Hedberg over Rinne and Niemi?
Why can’t Chuckles be the sort of all-the-time goal scoring sensation that Zubrus is?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Katebits asked the other day what we thought of Kovalchuk now. Next time she asks, I’ll just say, “Meh, he’s no Zubrus.”
Why can’t Chuckles be the sort of all-the-time goal scoring sensation that Zubrus is?
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Seriously. We should trade Chuckles for Bernier, because we’ve got Zubrus to do our scoring for us.
Elias totally deserves both on that second goal. I may be a little biased however as he is powering the Bureau to victory.
I still don’t understand how the Bureau managed to best the Sporks. That seems impossible on paper!
Zubrus would have slammed that in the back of the net.
No, Zubrus would have slammed himself into the back of the net. The puck may or may not have followed him in.
I want to know who says that a player can’t get a goal and an assist on the same goal.
Bernier. He’s sad enough as is.
Zubrus would have slammed that in the back of the net.
No, Zubrus would have slammed himself into the back of the net. The puck may or may not have followed him in.
Zubrus just slammed into Palmeiri(?). Very slowly. While he had the puck. I think slamming’s partially how he communicates.
I think slamming’s partially how he communicates.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Of course, now it’s a very congested and nasal-sounding slamming, what with that new nose.
I think slamming’s partially how he communicates.
I thought only netminders talked to the goalposts.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! The Devils are SO AWESOME!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
That felt good.
What a great game! If we can get someone to peg Tallinder with a tranq dart and re-release him ito the wilds of Sweden, the Devs should be fine this year.
While it was a good win last night, I fear greatly for this team if Elias ever gets injured. And those King fans are pretty lazy, it seemed they stopped booing Kovalchuk in the second half of the game. I’ll get them in shape when I see a game there next month.
“G Nikolai Khabibulin, just a few months after spending time in jail this summer because of a drunk-driving conviction, is the hottest goalie in the league”
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I’d like to thank Yahoo! Sports for my daily laugh. If only this worked for Lindsay Lohan.
IIRC, they put him in the ‘tent jail’ out in the desert in Arizona. It was well over 100 degrees during the day. Somehow, I don’t see Ms. Lohan lasting an afternoon in there…
Well, she does do hot yoga.
Somehow, I don’t see Ms. Lohan lasting an afternoon in there…
I dunno, I’m pretty sure those skeevy methheads are nigh indestructible.
Well, she does do hot yoga.

So there’s a new guy to take a look at tonight! Can’t wait for his Ookie-authorized nickname/backstory.
“Jobing” sounds filthy.
Once again I’m confused as to why we’re playing the Wild when “Phoenix” was on the schedule.
Those are some god-awful unis.
Could be worse, could be nearly any other Coyotes jersey, ever.
Funfetti
Maybe the Wild are playing some home games in Phoenix now.
Yes Chico, you have been wrong before. Often.
Whether it’s a goal or not, it’s nice that Moose got a nice spooning cuddle in.
Chico, please shut up.
That feels like BS to me.
That’s worse than funfetti, if only for Chico’s whining.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Nice!
That goal was at least partially due to the trapezoid. Oh, and WOOOOO!!!!
I’m just now checking the scores for the other games. What the hell happened in Philadelphia tonight?
Not sure, since I couldn’t see it. But, Winniped led by 6-2 at one point, then Philly came back to tie it. Then it went back and forth for a while, and the Jets finally won it. I thought they might be playing w/out goaltenders – but maybe they were, theoretically.
That goal was at least partially due to the trapezoid.
I thought that sort of treason was punishable by public flogging in New Jersey?
I thought that sort of treason was punishable by public flogging in New Jersey?
If they put in a rule aimed directly at NJ’s goaltender, it shouldn’t have taken NJ all these years to figure out how to make it work to their advantage at the other end of the ice.
If they put in a rule aimed directly at NJ’s goaltender, it shouldn’t have taken NJ all these years to figure out how to make it work to their advantage at the other end of the ice.
That implies they’re trying to score goals, when I think we all know those are incidental.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I apologize for jinxing the Devils tonight, Hedberg made his debut for the Bureau so this kind of game was bound to happen.
Have you seen Plekanec score a goal directly from the faceoff, in his own net last night? That takes special skills. (Also, I loved Price comment on this: “I just Bill Bucknered it”. Way to tease Boston fans)
And in those times of uncertainty, it’s good to see some thing never change. Thank you, Philadelphia goalies, for staying true to yourselves.
Thank you, Philadelphia goalies, for staying true to yourselves.
There was something new. I don’t recall any other Flyer goalie telling the media he sucked, apologizing to his teammates and the fans, and saying he had no confidence. Especially this early in the season. And, that if it had been a ball instead of a puck he still wouldn’t have been able to stop it.
Bryzgalov has real potential…for entertainment and pathos.
Bryzgalov has real potential…for entertainment and pathos.
It’s true. I kind of love him though so I want him to play well. Of course I also want the Flyers to lose, so I’d be delighted if the they just got shut out all the time. (Although a 9-8 game is pretty hilarious.)
Sooooo…how’s hockey going? I think I’m going to stick to one sport from now on. I don’t have the mental toughness.
I don’t have the mental toughness.
That makes three of us. But we’ll get over it. Baseball keeps us going when there is no hockey.
Has your October storm lived up to its forecast?
Lots of wet snow. Apparently, there are hundreds of thousands of people w/out power. I still (knock on wood) have power, but the trees in my development aren’t big enough to have branches that could fall on the wires if they break.
So did anyone get snowed in?
No trace of snow around here! :p
Holy smokes, guys, that snow was RIDONK. We lost power for 23 hours (each one felt longer than the last…), and then our interwebs were all wonky, and we’re in mourning for our beloved maple tree, and there’s still effin’ SNOW on the ground, and we both had to go back to work today after a week off, and it’s all AWFUL.
And that’s my story.
How’s tricks here? Anyone else get roughed up by the storm? A few people I work with up in north Jersey got upwards of 19 inches and are still without power…
We “only” got about 8 inches of snow and most of it has melted. I didn’t lose power, but the cable died for about 6 hours. There were places about 10 miles NW of here that got about 18 inches and PSE&G was saying that lots of people won’t have power until Wednesday.
My parents in Northern CT got buried, an old maple tree split in half and hit the house (but only the top of the tree, so it didn’t break the house). Another old tree in back went over from the roots and missed the house by about 3 feet. They don’t have power but their generator is working, for now. They’ve been told it might be a week before it’s back.
My brother and his husband were supposed to come back from France on Saturday night, but couldn’t, first because the Air France flight attendants were striking, but then they couldn’t switch flights because of the weather (they were flying to DC). So, they got a non-AF flight to Amsterdam and stayed with my bro-in-law’s relatives there and they are flying back tonight.
I’m so sorry to hear about your parents losing their trees, but I’m glad to hear their house didn’t suffer any major damage! I’m especially bummed for them not having power. That’s just such a horrible, horrible drag. We kept saying that, while it was certainly cold here without heat, at least it wasn’t 20 degrees out. So there’s that, right? (And your poor brother and brother-in-law!)
In actual hockey news, Marty’s off IR. You realize this means Marty and Pretty Ricky might be healthy and starting at the same time this week. So, when is the apocalypse supposed to start?
Yeah, when I spoke to my Mom and she told me about the tree hitting the house, I had to ask her, “So, is the house OK?”, especially since they just spent a boatload of money to have the roof replaced – and of course, because the weather isn’t exactly looking great. Not awful, but not balmy for the next week or so and they are about 5 – 8 degrees colder than NJ, depending on the weather.
I understand about it being cold w/out heat, in an attempt to save money, I didn’t turn the heat on this year until sometime on Friday, when I finally gave in, because I was freezing, despite multiple layers and wool. It sucks.
I’m not sure I’d feel all that sorry for my bro and bro-in-law. They don’t mind staying in Europe a few more days. And, it’s not like they are stuck in lousy airport hotel.
You realize this means Marty and Pretty Ricky might be healthy and starting at the same time this week. So, when is the apocalypse supposed to start?
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Judging by the weather, I think it already has started. We should have seen this storm coming sooner! :P
And I take your point about your brother and b-i-l. Heh. I’ll stop feeling sorry for their extended European vacation, then. :D
Your weather is so crazy! I’m sorry about your maple trees! You know, it never occurred to me that the reason trees lose their leaves in the winter is so snow won’t weigh down and break the branches. When we got the foot of snow a couple of winters ago, the branches on my giant live oak were touching the ground, packed with snow. I feel sure there aren’t many live oaks in the cold parts of the world, since they always have leaves on them. Maybe that’s why their leaves are so tiny — for the rare snow they get. Isn’t that fascinating? *eyeroll.*
Y’all’s influence at IPB has me mad that the Sharks are losing to the Rangers! That’s how much your hatred of the Rangers has rubbed off on me. I’m a bad fan of a Pacific team. :D
That’s how much your hatred of the Rangers has rubbed off on me.
Mission accomplished!
Happy Halloween, everyone! We’ve been sitting out on the front steps handing out candy. Grace was a teenage witch with foo-fee skirt, fishnet hose and combat boots. I had a huge witch’s hat with green/purple/yellow feathers. Dave had a black cape on with his Chuck Converses. We called him Count Nerdula. “He wants to do your math!” We are really enjoying our neighborhood.
Sorry about all the nasty weather. When we didn’t see any commenting, we began to wonder about you guys. I thought you might have gotten snowed in in Buffalo. We might get a few flakes this week. I hope not. We still need to get a snow shovel and salt for our very steep driveway.
Maybe that’s why their leaves are so tiny — for the rare snow they get. Isn’t that fascinating? *eyeroll.*
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I found it fascinating! Our little apple trees were bent over enough to be held down by the snow on the ground, but happily they all snapped back into place when I pulled the branches up. (Wasn’t that fascinating? :P)
I’m so glad to hear you’re appropriately hating the Rangers. Heh heh heh.
And Myra, it sounds like you guys are living large! We didn’t do any dressing up, but we did grill some turkey burgers. We don’t have street lights on our end of the street, so we only get the kids who live further down the dark block trick-or-treating. So they came by when we were out grilling, and I guess we were too scary there in our comfy pants (read: pajamas) and armed with barbecue tools, because the little kids would only come halfway up our driveway. We had to take the candy down to them. The benefit of having some but not many trick-or-treaters means you get to finish off the large bowl of candy you bought “just in case”. :P
That’s how much your hatred of the Rangers has rubbed off on me.
Same here, we were just discussing if we wanted to watch SJ v Rangers and had decided against it since we hate both teams so much. And of course I dislike the Rangers even more these days with their acquisition of our favorite bag of road spikes.
We called him Count Nerdula. “He wants to do your math!” We are really enjoying our neighborhood.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!! That’s so funny! And I love the thought of army boots with Grace’s skirt.
I have my light off, so no kids come to my door. I’m dressed as a killjoy. :P
I’m so glad y’all are enjoying your new neighborhood, Myra. I’m a teensy bit jealous that you get to have a new house. I’m starting to get that itch. I’m trying to ignore it. Of course I wouldn’t leave town, probably, but I keep hearing voices whispering the names of various suburbs.
We shut it down at 8 when we had just a little candy left. Gotta have a few leftovers! We live on a large cul-de-sac with lots of kids so we had lots of traffic. I thought it was interesting that a lot of the parents walking around with the kids were in costume as well.
Our little apple trees were bent over enough to be held down by the snow on the ground, but happily they all snapped back into place when I pulled the branches up. (Wasn’t that fascinating? :P)
It WAS! The live oak did that, that winter. I had to smack it with a broom handle to shake off snow and they snapped back up. And showered the rest of the snow all over me.
I’m starting to get that itch. I’m trying to ignore it. Of course I wouldn’t leave town, probably, but I keep hearing voices whispering the names of various suburbs.
There are some wonderful old neighborhoods in Ft. Worth with some really charming smaller houses!
We called him Count Nerdula. “He wants to do your math!”
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Last year we ran out of candy and had to give out the Chuckles we bought as an IPB prop. None of the kids seemed to know what they were. The first group of kids I saw this year looked like they were going to skip right over us. I figured for sure we must have gotten a reputation as being “that weird Chuckles house with crappy candy”.
What exactly happened to your maple tree? Did the whole tree come down?
“that weird Chuckles house with crappy candy”.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Is it wrong of me to wish failure on the Winnepeg Jets?
Is it wrong of me to wish failure on the Winnepeg Jets?
Absolutely not! In fact, exactly the opposite — it would be wrong of you to wish success on them.
And you shouldn’t have mentioned you’re getting the itch for a new house, Patty, because you KNOW I’m going to be the devil on your shoulder on this one. DO IT! DO IT!!! :P
Myra, our maple just dropped a huge amount of branches, one of which split the top of the trunk. So it’s still standing, albeit a shadow of its former self, but because of the damage to the main trunk part, the tree guy estimates we’re looking at no more than three or four years until it’s kaput. :( (We just got our internet back tonight, so we’re in the throes of uploading very exciting photos. :P)
Good! Because I totally wish failure on them. Especially when it’s at the hands of southern teams. :P
Good! Because I totally wish failure on them. Especially when it’s at the hands of southern teams. :P
What she said.
Good! Because I totally wish failure on them.
I’m with you also, especially since they could have moved to you know where. I did enjoy the first CBC broadcast in funny serious movie sort of way.
Halloween shows we are in a good sports town. Loads of kids coming to trick or treat then kickoff and hardly anyone.
Seeing kids dress up and get candies in every movie and on tv, but not getting to celebrate Halloween yourself because no one does here is the curse of French kids. :p
There was a lame attempt at getting people to celebrate Halloween here a few years ago, but it didn’t really work because it was just a blatant new way for brands and advertisers to sell stuff and make money.
(Oh, and I loved the Count Nerdula idea!)
Grrrrreg, I’d never even considered that there are kids in foreign countries who watch our exported TV and movies with the Halloween in ‘em, and they can but dream of trick-or-treating. That’s so sad! But at the same time, I admire the French people for refusing the commercialization of a holiday they don’t even observe.
In unrelated news, why does the Caps arena always look so dank on television? (Wait, I know why — I’ve been there. It is dank. Silly me.)
I feel sure there aren’t many live oaks in the cold parts of the world, since they always have leaves on them.
Way, late to comment on this but you’re absolutely right. The native range for live oak (which I assume is the kind you have) doesn’t extend any further north than Virginia. I think they can grow in parts of the northeast but suppose they don’t do nearly as well. Too bad, they’re such lovely trees!
