On Hockey Day in America, I’m forced to watch illegal streams of Canadian broadcasts of the game because GCL blocks out all NBCsports games. I think that makes me more American than everyone else here today.
Has Zach ever managed to look intense?
I think that makes me more American than everyone else here today.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: We did actually have the Sabres game on for a bit today. It was just enough to hear Pierre inform us that the reason so many great American NHLers have come from Minnesota is because — get this — it’s cold there.
I think that makes me more American than everyone else here today.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: You definitely win that one! (Although we made a real holiday of it and grilled burgers for lunch today. Nothing like grilling on a February afternoon to start making me really antsy for summertime…)
I think that makes me more American than everyone else here today.
It might be a moo point now, but the online home of NBCSN was streaming all of today’s games. I did hear that the quality wasn’t the best though.
It was just enough to hear Pierre inform us that the reason so many great American NHLers have come from Minnesota is because — get this — it’s cold there.
You can’t get much past Pierre.
I’m listening on radio today. No Blersus (or whatever it is now).
Dear Blersus (you’ll always be Blersus to me, NBCwhatever),
Your pre-game highlight package of the earlier action from the day has not been enhanced by your pointing out to me which players are American. Even as infected with the spirit of Hockey Day in America as I am, I really don’t give a shit.
Hugs,
Schnookie
Canadiens honoring Gary Carter right now. They’re doing this awesome thing where they’re projecting images onto the ice. And now they’re doing a video tribute to “New Kid in Town” by the Eagles.
D’awwwww.
You can’t get much past Pierre.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
So they’re doing nice shit in Montreal right now, Gunner? I wouldn’t know. Blersus is busy interviewing all the American participants in this game.
The prsentation for Carter sounded very nice on the radio. At least, it sounded much better than listening to Pierre interview anyone. Even Zach.
Gunner, I thought Youppi! coming out in his original Expos gear was a really, really nice touch for the Carter tribute.
Even as infected with the spirit of Hockey Day in America as I am, I really don’t give a shit.
I’m pretty sure that during the Sabres game they referred to Paul Gaustad as the American player most likely to be traded before the deadline. That’s taking national pride a wee bit too far.

:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: U-S-A! U-S-A!
Who is this “Matt Tore-o-meena?” When did we sign him?
Who is this “Matt Tore-o-meena?” When did we sign him?
Seriously! “Tore-o of Power” doesn’t even rhyme. What’s wrong with this guy? :P
On radio, NJ’s PK is sponsored by Ecotech pest elimination. That actually seems appropriate.
These Blersus guys need to stop talking about how DeBoer is letting the Devils players open up a bit, because I’ve been assuming that the only reason that’s happened this year is because no one told Lou. Don’t ruin it for us, Blersus guy!
Blersus: “This should be a great goaltending matchup tonight, between 39-year-old Martin Brodeur and 24-year-old Carey Price.”
Me: “How on earth is Carey Price only 24?”
Pookie: “How on earth is Marty only 39?”
Pookie: “How on earth is Marty only 39?”
Bleh. I remember when he played a few games w/NJ in the 1991-92 season because of injuries. The fact that he’s still playing makes me feel ancient.
I remember when he played a few games w/NJ in the 1991-92 season because of injuries. The fact that he’s still playing makes me feel ancient.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: I still feel like I’ve come to hockey relatively recently, but I’ve noticed lately that when I see some ye olde highlights from the vaults, they’re from games I remember watching. But I can cling to the fact that at least Marty was around before me. :P
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! No joke, this is the exchange we had immediately before the goal:
Pookie, noticing the music the Montreal arena is playing during the pre-faceoff stoppage: “Why are they playing Bon Jovi?”
Me: “Seriously! I don’t understand why any arena outside of New Jersey plays them. They are our life force. They only make us stronger.” ::Devils promptly score:: “SEE?”
Oy vey. The radio announcers are waxing nostalgic about…Blobby.
The radio announcers are waxing nostalgic about…Blobby.
Good grief. What on earth could they be nostalgic about??
Good grief. What on earth could they be nostalgic about??
I’m not sure how they got there, but they wandered from the discussion of the Parise goal to some kind of discussion of Devils’ goal scorers and then somehow it turned into how Holik was only remembered as part of the Crash Line when he scored lots of key goals. My thought was, “No, he’ll be remembered for his unibrow, voice and inability to admit anything was his fault…and his ability to get that contract out of Sather.”
“No, he’ll be remembered for his unibrow, voice and inability to admit anything was his fault…and his ability to get that contract out of Sather.”
So many hockey players have gotten a contract out of Sather that it’s not really an “ability” at this point. It’s kind of like lacing up one’s skates: you assume any hockey player can do it.
Also when a hockey player can’t do it, you know he’s seriously injured and/or a a tragic shell of his former self.
Also when a hockey player can’t do it, you know he’s seriously injured and/or a a tragic shell of his former self.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Although when you look at the Redden/Gomez era for Slats, being able to get that kind of contract out of him was generally a fantastic indicator that the player was a tragic shell of his former self…

A MetsBlog post with photos from the Gary Carter tribute including the cool “images on the ice” bit.
Given what’s happened to DiPietro, I have to wonder if it was Sather, not Wang, who signed that contract.
Things I am thankful for today:
That I don’t have a mouth wound like Volchenkov’s.

Why so serious?
Formatting fail.
When the hell did “compete level” become an acceptable phrase? It strikes me as all kinds of awkward, and incredibly non-descriptive. Is it supposed to describe the competitiveness of his team? Wouldn’t “intensity” or “energy” cover that?
Formatting fail.
Someone’s copyedit level was too low on that one.
Why so serious?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And I could not agree with you more about the idiocy of the term “compete level”. In fact, it was just last night that we were watching a game during which the announcers used it and I completely went off on it. I feel like it was Pierre McGuire who first started using the term, which infuriates me doubly. I mean, for starters, it’s a completely stupid, faux-corporate-speak, “look at me, I’m so coach-y” term, and second, it was introduced to hockey by Pierre fucking McGuire. THERE IS NOTHING GOOD ABOUT “COMPETE LEVEL”. It makes my rage level sky-high.
I object to it even more on literary grounds. “Level” is normally WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! used after a noun to form a descriptive phrase: “Energy level,” e.g.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
And look at you with your grammar and shit. I’m all, “Ugh, Pierre,” and you’re all, “I actually understand this language we speak.” :D
No one can be blamed for losing basic language skills when confronted with some who makes as much a mockery of speech as Pierre does.
Oh, right — third period. Sigh.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! TAOR OF PAOR!!!!!!!
My WOO level is sky high!
I haven’t really been paying attention. Is this another one of those nationally televised games where the commentators all assume that the Devils only win because of the trap?
Your guess is as good as mine, Gunner. At some point last season, when Doc stopped doing most of our games, I lost my ability to actually hear what the commentators are saying. (Boomer will frequently respond to the commentators and I’ll have to ask her what they said so I can appreciate her jokes. Maybe I should check with her…)
Boomer says that no, they haven’t been saying the Devils are a trapping team. It’s a red letter day!!
I also don’t listen any more, but I chalk it up to self-defense against Chico. It’s hard to convince my brain that Chico isn’t calling this game.
And to think, the first time Blersus didn’t call the Devils a trapping team, none of us were paying any attention. :P
Call me crazy, but that NBC “wipe to/from highlight” sound is exactly the same sound you heard in either GuitarHero or Rockband whenever you activated Star Power.
that NBC “wipe to/from highlight” sound is exactly the same sound you heard in either GuitarHero or Rockband whenever you activated Star Power.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Now I’m going to have to listen for that.
Well I seem to recall Roenick talking about how the Devils are “frustrating” and “defensive.” I also think someone was talking about how it was “layer after layer” when going against the Devils.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think I ever activated Star Power in Guitar Hero. I didn’t like any of the songs, so I would mute the TV and listen to Bonnie Prince Billy or Baby Bird instead and then chalk up my inability to score well on my general lack of rhythm. It wasn’t until after I swore off the game forever that I realized it probably would have been easier if I’d been actually listening to the song I was supposed to be “playing”.
Well I seem to recall Roenick talking about how the Devils are “frustrating” and “defensive.”
Well, that’s Roenick. I mean, SURELY NBC has a disclaimer that any opinion voiced by him doesn’t reflect those of the network, right?
Why can the Devils beat everyone but Clemmensen? This question is going to keep me up nights.
This question is going to keep me up nights.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It really is one of life’s great (and terrible) mysteries.
I read a tip today that if you’re having trouble falling asleep, you should work out Fibonacci’s Sequence in your head. I’m pretty sure that goes 0, 1, 1, 2, FUCK YOU CLEMMER, 3, 5…
Clemmer is an awful reason for insomnia.
Clemmer is an awful reason for insomnia.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Also an awful reason for losing. It’s so rough, being a Devils fan when he’s still lurking out there, just… waiting. :P
I have to say, I don’t like living in a world where the Leafs might make the playoffs. This is very disconcerting.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Have you guys forgiven Sykora yet? I saw him outside the Rock the other night holding a sign that said “WILL SCORE GOALS FOR LOVE”
Have you guys forgiven Sykora yet?
Do pigs fly yet? He’s going to have to score a lot more goals. A LOT. Like, game-winning playoff goals.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
BOOOOOOOOO
A non-hockey friend emailed a recipe for funfetti cake tonight. I blame that goal on her.
I saw him outside the Rock the other night holding a sign that said “WILL SCORE GOALS FOR LOVE”
As long as he keeps working on that, maybe he has hope. (Don’t tell him there is no hope. I don’t want him to stop scoring.)
I had to tend to dinner for a moment and missed “WOOOOOOOOOO!” and then “BOOOOOOOO!”
Wait, isn’t this Boulton’s role? Or Palmieri’s apparently?
Zach prefers a handsomer henchman, so Boulton doesn’t get to defend his honor. Boulton’s there to fight for all the other players.
Good god, what quack of a doctor gave Marty those hair plugs?
Wait, wait — we went to watch the Ducks during intermission and missed hilarious hair plugs?? Dammit!!
This game blows.
That recipe my friend sent linked to a recipe for double-glazed, double-funfetti donuts. I blame that goal on those damn funfetti donuts.
No one ever, ever, EVER let Marty know there is such a thing as a double-funfetti donut. (Although I figure Game 7 from the most recent Devils/Hurricanes playoff series counts as a double-funfetti donut, so obviously Marty already knew about them…)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really need to get some of whatever Gel-O is either smoking or drinking. That he could even suggest that the Pony’s goal might be the ‘death blow’ when NJ still has an evil 3rd period to play…
Maybe Gel-O meant the death blow if the game ended after the second period?
Maybe he thinks there’s a mercy rule in hockey. But, in this case it would be a mercy if NJ didn’t have to play 3rd periods.
Sue, :^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
We’re currently playing with a laser pointer for our cat. I wonder if Clarkson is similarly fascinated by laser pointer dots? Like, can DeBoer never use them in team meetings, because Clarkson enthusiastically chases them?
This result! So shocking! ::eyeroll::
I can’t believe they sucked me into believing they had this in the bag.
Funfetti
Evil, Evil 3rd periods.
And, yes, Devils meetings are laser-pointer free zones. Otherwise, Clarkson would be exhausted from all that chasing.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! That was crazy!!!!
woo? How did that happen?
WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
How did that happen?
Blinded the Leafs goalie with a laser pointer?
I’m so glad that Gustavswhatever (I can’t be bothered to make sure I know how to spell his name) was there to make sure that shot that was going wide would end up in the net instead. Thanks, lousy goalie! I appreciate that!
Blinded the Leafs goalie with a laser pointer?
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Or perhaps he also has a laser pointer chasing problem, and the Leafs accidentally had one in their pregame meetings, and he was left way too tired for OT?
Woohoo, the word out of Toronto is that Burke was so mad after the Devils won Tuesday that he is now looking for a new goalie. I love when Toronto and Philadelphia turn inwards and destroy themselves from the inside.
I love when Toronto and Philadelphia turn inwards and destroy themselves from the inside.
I know! That’s music to my ears about Burke!!
Welp…my team hasn’t even left Detroit yet! Enjoy your win tomorrow Devils lovelies ;)
the word out of Toronto is that Burke was so mad after the Devils won Tuesday that he is now looking for a new goalie.
It’s hilarious how fast Burke went from “nope, not going to be active in the trade market” to “ZOMG need goalie. Want goalie. Find goalie.”
And while we’re talking trades, I love how everyone’s first reaction to the Kings trading for Carter is that putting Carter & Richards together in LA is a recipe for off-ice disaster.
the word out of Toronto is that Burke was so mad after the Devils won Tuesday that he is now looking for a new goalie
This isn’t unusual. There were a few years where the Bruins made major moves right after losing to NJ. Joe Thornton to the Sharks happened the day after a loss to NJ. It’s like…lose to NJ, destroy your team. Obviously, the Bruins have made no major moves this year because they haven’t lost to NJ…no matter what other issues they might have, they can still say that.
Yay Doc
Woah, lot of Emric nepotism in the Devils clubhouse.
Oookies noticeably absent. Maybe they went to the game?
Possibly. Or, it is a Friday night. Maybe they have..a social life.
What losers.
We TOTALLY don’t have social lives! The reason we’re late to the game here is because we both overslept on our traditional Friday after-work naps. So… the opposite of having lives? How was the Doc ceremony?
What is this “so-cial li-fe” of which you speak?
Well, you have something in common with Marty. He looked like he was asleep throughout the ceremony (which was perfectly nice – Mrs. Doc really liked the car gift). I thought Marty might be in a food coma.
It….was MAGICAL
I thought Marty might be in a food coma.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
And this game is POOPY! I got out of bed for THIS?
Damnit.
I wish I could get on a “Do Not Show” list for those “The Garden Transformed” commercials. And this is only Year One. ::shoots self::
I’m starting to feel like the Canucks are a better hockey team than the Devils.
Okay, Mrs. Doc is adorable.
I can’t believe it’s already been six years of Dano as an analyst!
You could kind of feel this game coming since the All Star break; you knew at some point some team was going to dissect the Devils with the mildly detached demeanor of a Law and Order medical examiner.
you knew at some point some team was going to dissect the Devils with the mildly detached demeanor of a Law and Order medical examiner.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The positive I’m taking away from this game is that splendid analogy. This really is clinical, isn’t it?
Buh-bye Foster, we hardly knew ye.
Hm. Zidlicky? I have no opinion of him. I had no opinion of Foster either, but now I like him. Why’d he have to go so soon?
If Minny wants someone to be defensively responsible, I don’t think Foster is their man. Farewell, Palmieri.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Huzzah! (Look at how the Devils are celebrating the departure of Foster and Palmieri. I had no idea they were holding the team back so much. :P)
Foster and Palmieri were clearly cancers keeping the team down!
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/illustrated-guide-minnesota-wild-misery-marek-zidlicky-plays-163832001.html
Wow, thanks for that link, Gunner. That’s very… encouraging? (I think I have an opinion of Zidlicky now. Sigh.)
On the other hand, behindthenet says his Cors Rel is +9.5
That seems an awfully expensive deal for an old, crappy guy.
Also positives: Foster and Vellieux were basically scrap heap players – Foster only cost Egg and Fraser to acquire (and came with a goalie), and Vellieux was a minor league free agent. And Palmieri played himself out of the lineup, and is going to the other conference which will prevent too many possible back-to-bite-ya moments.
I’m a little bothered by giving up the picks though. A 2nd seems high, and the conditional better be lower than a 5th or we got hosed.
If Chuck’s jersey isn’t retired, blood will spill.
CHUCK!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
DAMN YOU DOC!!!!!! YOU MADE ME LOVE AND THEN YOU BROKE MY HEART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I SHAVED MY BEARD FOR YOU, DEVIL-WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I’ve got no problem cutting Vellieux and Palmieri loose, but draft picks don’t grow on trees, Lou! (Especially since we still have to give up whatever the Kovalchuk penalty picks were…) Also, is Zidlicky –
WAIT, THEY’RE RETIRING CHUCK???????? WHAT??????
– never mind. I forgot what I was going to say. I’m too broken up about losing Chuck.
If Chuck’s jersey isn’t retired, blood will spill.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It would have to be proportioned correctly to the other retired #s.
So that’s it? We just let Chuck go? Nothing in return? Not even one more game from Doc? This is the worst Devils transaction EVER.
So that’s it? We just let Chuck go? Nothing in return? Not even one more game from Doc? This is the worst Devils transaction EVER.
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE
That is absolutely the only correct response here. There are bad transactions, and then there are rip-the-soul-out-of-the-franchise transactions, and encasing Chuck in carbonite and giving him to Jabba — er, Doc, is one of the latter. I predict this is the turning point for the Devils this season. They can’t come back from this.
I don’t understand why they couldn’t give Doc either Stan or Chico and keep Chuck.
A CONDITIONAL THIRD??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t understand why they couldn’t give Doc either Stan or Chico and keep Chuck.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
In return for Chuck, I’d accept one more game from Doc (from his JD Era), or never having to hear Stan Fischler on my tv ever again, or removing all Rangers/Garden commercials from Devils broadcasts. Nothing less than one of those things.
Maybe we could replace Chuck the Doc by taxidermifying PJ Sykora and dressing him up in a little boater and a cigarillo?
A CONDITIONAL THIRD??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have you seen the conditions? From Puck Daddy:
the Wild get conditional 3rd rounder pick in ’13 if the Devils make East Final in 2012 and Zidlicky plays 75 percent of their games in the 1st two rounds of the playoffs
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/minnesota-wild-trade-marek-zidlicky-devils-actually-something-020231215.html;_ylt=Am5XSR9h82vMKoPK4YfrtoiRbcp_;_ylu=X3oDMTFja3NwYTFmBG1pdANCbG9ncyBJbmRleARwb3MDMQRzZWMDTWVkaWFCbG9nSW5kZXhUZW1w;_ylg=X3oDMTFvcGs0cnBnBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRwc3RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANibG9nBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25zBHRlc3QD;_ylv=3
I can’t see them making the east finals this year and if they do, then I’m guessing they will see the trade as a success.
I can’t see them making the east finals this year and if they do, then I’m guessing they will see the trade as a success.
Gotta agree with that. If Zidlicky’s playing a lot and the Devils go deep in the playoffs, I’ll be pleasantly surprised enough to be willing to part with a third-rounder.
Wait, why are they asking Lou about Zidlicky? Does Lou not know what the broadcast team did with Chuck just moments ago??
Concentrating on Zidlicky is Lou’s way of dealing with loss.
It’s really a shame that the Canucks have actual goaltending.

I know. I’m still stuck in the Leafs game, so I’ve been wondering when the other team’s goalie is going to put the puck into his own net for the Devils.
I think someone’s been Zidlicking toads.
