When Victory Euro Mats was awarded the Victory Euro Prince of Wales Trophy, he made sure not to touch it. He doesn’t want to be the one who jinxes the Devils!

Good job VEM!
Quick! Hide VEM! Sather will try and sign him.
Was there a big press conference by a non SCF team during the 1995 Final?
2000 Final: NYR Presser to announce return of Captain Waterworks
2003 Final: Avalanche Presser to announce Patty Roy retirement
2012 Final: Red Wings Presser for Lidstrom to announce retirement
Quick! Hide VEM! Sather will try and sign him.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: It’s funny because it’s true.
Ooooh, I like the pattern there, Sue. That’s VERY promising.
Sather can’t afford VEM.
Also, those press conferences are spooooky!
I’m cracking up at the VE PoW trophy. That’s some mad crafting skill.
And even The Rock is doing its part tonight. There’s an elevator full of media that’s stuck somewhere between the ground and the press box. The reporters are Tweeting for help at the moment.
There’s an elevator full of media that’s stuck somewhere between the ground and the press box.
Heh. Lou does everything he can to keep the media away from his team, but sometimes the magnitude of the event requires desperate measures. :P (And thanks for noting our mad trophy-making skillz. I’d say a good 15 seconds of work went into that thing!)
Ew. Bob Costas. Never have I been happier to have the TV muted and good music on instead.
That would so suck being stuck in an elevator before a SCF game!
Also, guys, I don’t get it — I’m watching a SCF game but the Devils appear to be in it. WTF?! :D
That would so suck being stuck in an elevator before a SCF game!
It would depend on who was stuck with me…I can tell you that a bunch of reporters wouldn’t be my first choice.
Liam is looking spectacularly orange this evening.
I can tell you that a bunch of reporters wouldn’t be my first choice.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Good point. I can think of plenty of people I wouldn’t mind missing a bit of SCF Game 1 to be stuck in an elevator with. NHL reporters are not among them.
HA! Good point, Sue!
He really is. Almost Oompa-Loompa orange.
Poor Zach. No one should have to even look at Pierre at this time, much less speak to him and be polite.
I love that trophy. I’m cheering for the Devils…from work. Go Devils!
This isn’t the way they needed to start. Repeated icings aren’t good.
Wow. Strong start here. ::eyeroll::
Hi Carol! Sorry you’re at poopy work.
Bleh.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! (I suppose I should just get used to this. I mean, the Kings are a significantly better hockey team than the Devils are, aren’t they?)
Funfetti.
BOOOOOOOO!!!
and is interference not going to be called this game?
This is NOT the time to start with this crap again Marty…
I mean, the Kings are a significantly better hockey team than the Devils are, aren’t they
Looks like it, yeah.
and is interference not going to be called this game?
No.
Apparently they haven’t gotten the memo to shoot high.
Marty tried to make up for that shitty goal by being such a delicate little flower when Brown skated near him… Heh heh.
Marty tried to make up for that shitty goal by being such a delicate little flower when Brown skated near him
I’d like to believe that, but Marty’s always a delicate little flower when someone from the other team skates near him. Sometimes when his own players, and the refs or the linesmen do.
Sometimes when his own players, and the refs or the linesmen do.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I wish our fourth line hadn’t suddenly decided to believe its own press; what was with all that over-passing?
what was with all that over-passing?
They need Brian Gionta to remind his brother what’s what.
CLARKSON. STOP MISSING THE NET.
Clarkson’t fired. I’m not giving him a chance to miss 3 times.
I’m giving all the guys a one-period pass because of nerves. But if Clarkson misses the net in the second, he’s fired.
Dear Clarkson,
Please don’t make me break up with you so soon.
Manlove,
Frisby
Frisby, :^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Clarksonlove is a fickle love.
I’ve hated those insufferable “Face Time and Think Time” commercials for so long but now I find it hilarious that they’re branding Pierre’s inside-the-glass reports with them. I can’t believe they found a way to make Pierre even worse!
Wow, doesn’t get any more slew foot-y than that. Yeesh.
This is an awful PP
I’m ready to move on to Game 2 now. :P
Zubrus is fired. I don’t care what he did or why he did it.
I realized I was in too deep with this playoff run when I looked up, saw Zubrus in the box for elbowing, and immediately thought, “How can he help it? His elbows are at head height for normal guys!” ::sobs:: I’ve been Prongerified!
I’ve been Prongerified!
::calls Hockey 911:: We need a hockey doctor here stat!
*********************************!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
WTF??? How the hell did that happen???? An actual goal for NJ????
I have no doubt that’s exactly how DeBoer drew up that scoring play.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
Schnookie, I remember, during Brian Gionta’s rookie year, I was at the arena for a Devils-Ranger game. Gionta was tangled up with Leetch and Leetch came out the worse for it. A Ranger fan behind me complained that “The fucker hit Leetchie low”. I turned and explained to him that, since Gionta was basically about 5 foot 5 with his skates on, there was really no place else for him to hit 99.9% of the players in the league. The guy tried to take a swing at me. He missed.
I used to laugh when Gionta would enrage Chara. Now, I kind of sympathize with Zdeno….
What was Quick doing laying on top of Zach for like, 2 minutes? Trying to convince him to sign w/LA?
oh man, how I am just now realizing that our teams are playing each other in the freaking FINAL?!!?
The guy tried to take a swing at me. He missed.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Ah, Devils-Rangers games at the arena. Fun times.
how I am just now realizing that our teams are playing each other in the freaking FINAL?!!?
Because it’s just that outlandish that the Kings and Devils have ended up in the Finals?! :D
I turned and explained to him that, since Gionta was basically about 5 foot 5 with his skates on, there was really no place else for him to hit 99.9% of the players in the league. The guy tried to take a swing at me. He missed.
:^:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Typical Ranger fan. All hot air. Heh. (And yeah, now that Gionta’s not a Devil, I’m also like, “Poor, poor Chara.”)
kms2!!! We’re enemies now! :D
Because it’s just that outlandish that the Kings and Devils have ended up in the Finals?! :D
right?!?! this is BANANAS!!
ok, in order to avoid inadvertent trolling, I’ll leave your Devils fandom alone. See you after the season is over!
See ya, kms2! May the worst team win! (In that the Kings are clearly the better team. Heh.)
Oooh, sneaky gameplan — icing the Kings with a glass-repair delay. Good thinking, DeBoer.
That’s not a goal.
Yeah, we were a little confused why they were reviewing it, because it looked clearly not to be a goal from here.
Fired! Everyone’s fired!!!
I’m going to need someone from Security up here, to show Volchenkov out.
Oh, I’m sorry Volchenkov. I read that number wrong. You can keep your job. Fayne, please start cleaning out your desk now.
Fired! Everyone’s fired!!!
Good. Because I was going to fire Fayne as soon as I stopped screaming at him, but you saved me the trouble.
Unfortunately, LA seems to have woken up from the little nap they were taking at the start of the period.
I’m glad you guys are around to take care of either wide-scale or precision firings, because I’m clearly just taking guys out at random. :P
And yeah, I liked the first half of this period a lot more than the more recent part.
This OT should be simple — all the Devils have to do is bounce another puck off someone’s shoulder into the net. Easy-peasy!
Why are they showing Sykora’s OT playoff goals on the list? He’s not in the lineup.
I have to point out that Chuckles has been completely useless tonight.
As soon as you said something, Chuckles looked good. Keep bashing him, Sue!
Oof. That was probably not what the Devils meant to do.
BOOO!!!!
Clarkson, piss off!
Fluck. Well. That sucked.
Goodnight everyone.
Rats. Well, only losing by one goal was way more than I was expecting! On to Game 2!
G’night Sue!
And Frisby, that’s the spirit! Make Clarkson earn back your manlove.
Goodnight, Sue! Sweet dreams of firing all of the Devils!
We should’ve won and they know it! Next game…
I don’t know if I’ll be able to be online for the next three or four (if necessary) games because I’ll be on vacation. I’ll trust you all will keep it civil while I’m gone. ;)
P.S. let’s tell Clarky to aim for the glass for Game 2, then sit back and enjoy watching him rack up 5 or 6 goals.
I’ll trust you all will keep it civil while I’m gone. ;)
I make no promises, Frisby, but I can make sure that no one expresses any undying love for Clarkson unless he deserves it. Meanwhile, have a GREAT vacation!!!
let’s tell Clarky to aim for the glass for Game 2, then sit back and enjoy watching him rack up 5 or 6 goals.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I may miss Game 2 – B-day. I have lunch w/the whole family, then a tour of Hyde Park, then dinner w/brother & brother in law. No idea when I will get home.
I haven’t said it for a while but Marty needs to go after this year. I have had it with his lazy “I’ll try to guess what the other person is going to do instead of actually seeing and stopping it” goaltending. I could live with it if his guessing percentage was significantly higher than it was. And Sue, stories like yours make me think maybe I won’t check out any games in LA, too bad it’s so much closer to me than NJ.
Mike, don’t let stories of NJ-NYR games (or, NJ-Philly games), stop you from going to LA. When I had season tickets, which I admit was a while ago (just can’t afford them now), I saw a few NJ-LA games at the old arena and Kings fans usually did a road trip from LA. They were polite, respectful, and used to look up at the NJ cup banners and say how wonderful it would be to have just one of those. They were a real treat.
Happy birthday, Sue! It sounds like you’ve got some great festivities lined up!
And Mike, we went to a Devils/Kings game in LA back when we were living in Phoenix and we had a great time. The only times I think you’d have to worry about fights and general unruliness would be NJ/PHI and NJ/NYR games. :D
I just checked ticket prices for games in LA and that’s a whole other reason for not going. And it’s not just the potential fighting, I have noticed other times I have seen my favorite teams in games on the road that it’s just not as much fun unless you are in a group of like minded citizens. It’s like every time something good happens I don’t want to cheer too much to avoid seeming like a jerk.
I watched a Kings game earlier this season at Staples as a neutral observer for a game against the Hawks and it seemed like a pretty mellow place but then a friend of mine almost got in a fight when I was seeing a game in Vancouver for a similar situation. Of course everyone knows Vancouverans are prone to violence and trashing their town :D
It’s like every time something good happens I don’t want to cheer too much to avoid seeming like a jerk.
Yeah, that’s definitely a problem. When we went to Pittsburgh a few years ago, and the Devils romped over the Pens with a final score of about 8,524 to 4, we stopped cheering after about the third Devils goal. We were literally the only people wearing red in the entire half of the arena we were sitting in (there was a lone Devils fan across from us, though…). It was… uncomfortable. Heh. (Vancouver fans, though? They’re animals! :P)
Wow, I decided to check what was going on with the Frisby bowl, and I just realized how bad I was. Like, remarkably bad: I gave the most possible points to Pittsburgh and Vancouver, and the least possible points to… LA and the Devils. It’s scary how accurate I was. I mean, accurately bad.
(The good news is, in my head, the Devils were the absolute least likely team to win. So that might be a good sign…)
It’s scary how accurate I was. I mean, accurately bad.
:^::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Grrrreg, you and me both. I had a VAN/PIT final, and I had LA and NJ combining for one win. You and I are hockey savants!
So, is there anyone around tonight, or is everyone on vacation or out partying?
is there anyone around tonight, or is everyone on vacation or out partying?
I’m here. I just got back from taking my mom out to dinner for her birthday.
How nice, Amy! Where’d you guys go? Somewhere I’ve been? :D
We just wrapped up our Saturday evening episode of Rockford Files to find out our NBC HD feed is “having technical difficulties”. This has to be a bad sign, right?
We ended up at Gordon Biersch. My mother had originally wanted to go to Cheesecake Factory (I smiled and nodded, as it is her birthday), but the wait was over an hour and a half, so we passed.
And you didn’t miss much on the game so far; just Milbury saying that Kovy wasn’t doing enough.
We’ve got the game on but in non-HD, so that Kings goal was especially hideous.
We haven’t gone to Gordon Biersch; was it a good dinner? I’d go to Butterwoods for my birthday if I lived in Buffalo, and I’d order one of everything. :D
Did Butterwoods close? I seem to recall something like that, but I could be making that up. Either way, I’m so glad you were spared Cheesecake Factory, but that’s sweet that you were willing to risk it. Heh.
Meanwhile, ugh. I was in the kitchen for the goal, and now I have no idea what’s going on, because the scale of our feed is all off, and we can’t see scoreboard or clock. This is like stone age technology!
Did Butterwoods close?
Yes and no. The company is still open, but their restaurant location closed due to building code violations.
That wasn’t a fun first period… Going to sleep. I hope the rest of the game will be better! Go Devils! :)
G’night, Grrrreg, my fellow hockey prognosticating genius! :P
but their restaurant location closed due to building code violations.
Are you saying that I could have died in a firetrap when we ate there??? Heh.
I just showed up and NJ scored. Sorry I wasn’t here earlier.
Yeah, Sue, it’s all your fault! :D Happy birthday!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And hi, Sue! How were the festivities?
It was a food festival and FDR’s house is worth a visit. Claude appears to be sulking because I’ve been gone 2 days in a row.
Schnookie and I actually went up to Hyde Park a few years ago. The main takeaways for me were:
1. The rose garden was gorgeous.
2. The television was amazing!
3. The television was in a room called “the snuggery”. Needless to say, the word “den” was been completely replaced by the word “snuggery” in my vocabulary.
Seriously, though, I really enjoyed it. The exhibits in the library were really cool. I’ve heard Val Kil is also worth a visit, but we didn’t venture that far afield. Glad you had a great time!
Claude appears to be sulking because I’ve been gone 2 days in a row.
Poor guy! Ours get all sulky when we go away, too. Man, cats. ::shakes head:: You’d think they’d be more grateful for fresh food.
And I loved FDR’s house when we visited there! It was one of the very first things we did when we moved back to NJ, because it was so exciting to be able to take a day trip to a cool Presidential home. I’m sure Pookie’s going to mention this too, but my strongest memory of the place was the TV with, like, serial number 1. (Which makes me laugh because I think of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns’s SSN is revealed to be “aught-aught aught-aught-aught aught-aught-aught-two. Damn you, Teddy Roosevelt.”)
OMG! How could I have forgotten that “snuggery” came from Hyde Park!?!
So tell me more about the food — you always eat so well, Sue. :D
We went to the CIA for lunch, we ate at the French restaurant, Escoffier. I had the onion soup, which is made w/5 different onions, then had potato crusted cod for the entree and strawberry tart for dessert. BTW, we have decided that what the Roosevelt estate needs is a tea room.
We got back around 8, went to dinner at the local italian restaurant, which is pretty good. I had a pork chop special with sauteed escarole and then had a canoli for dessert. I’m not sure I want to eat again this weekend.
We were very amused by the ‘snuggery’ too. I think everyone should have one.
Zubrus is fired
Oh, I’m so glad you went to the CIA for lunch! We tried to go there when we visited Hyde Park, but didn’t realize you had to have reservations. So it was Applebee’s for us. You know what they didn’t have? Escoffier-caliber food. (I did two week-long boot camps at the CIA, where part of the deal is eating each night in one of the restaurants. I only got to eat at Escoffier once, though, because they had a power outage one of the nights it was on our agenda. I don’t recall an onion soup like yours [5 different onions? YUM!], but we did get a free bottle of Sauternes because the one from our wine tasting lecture earlier that day had been corked. I feel like SUCH a snob for being able to tell this story. :P) I think any birthday that’s had strawberry tart and canoli is one well spent!
And yes! Hyde Park TOTALLY needs a tea room. Not just because in the area (at least 10 years ago) there was either CIA or Applebee’s, and nothing in between.
Our standard def feed is cropped in such a way that the intermission guys’ heads are all cut off. Pookie just pointed out that it’s an improvement over the HD feed, so I guess all is well.
I was going to say, that’s a feature, not a bug. All feeds should offer that.
Oh, and as far as I can tell, the restaurant options in Hyde Park are still Applebees and the CIA. That’s why we think Franklin & Eleanor’s Tea Room is needed, and soon.
that’s a feature, not a bug

I would drive up to Hyde Park just to take an afternoon at Franklin & Eleanor’s Tea Room!
well, fuck, that’s it.
I am beginning to think the Devils are not going to win the Cup.
Well, when there wasn’t a call on the trip on Elias, I thought, the Kings will score later in this shift. Sure enough, they did. I expect this to be a sweep. Goodnight, everyone.
I figured on a sweep before the series even started, just because the Kings have been so good so far. So… not too surprised that’s how it’s going. At least the games have been close.
G’night, Sue!
I’m now quite glad I elected not to go to LA.
You made the right choice, Mike. Definitely the right choice.
